My prime ddr days are long past. I played the game very religiously during the extreme/supernova time frame but due to adult responsibilities I simply don't have time to play the game as much as what I once did. I applaud the video game series for playing a huge positive impact in my life and when I find free time I still play the home console versions since ddr machines are very hard to find in my area. I think the biggest thing I will always be thankful for ddr is that it introduced me to my favorite genre of music which is trance music, and I would of never got into trance music if it wasn't for dj taka and tracks such as votum stellarum and pandora. Even to this day dj taka is still one of my favorite trance artists of all time.
Londell "Taz" Hicks was an absolute legend from among the DDR announcers. Great review by the way! DDR was my childhood, I will forever love and adore this game!
I am such a HUGE DDR fan! I just started playing actively two weeks ago and I am really addicted. I am still watching but wanted to thank you for making this video!
This is great. I'm a huge DDR guy, been playing for almost 15 years. I've never seen a retrospective of the series on TH-cam before. Even if i already knew everything you mentioned, it was still enjoyable to see someone else as passionate.
A local arcade in my town actually featured a DDR Kids cabinet. Funnily enough, it's one of the pictures you used in the video lol I got a chance to play on it when I was 10 or so, but I wasn't into DDR at the time so it was just me being a goof.
Night of Fire was the reason the play disneys rave xD I remember they had a machine in an arcade outside of space mountain years ago. Used to love when we'd go on family vacations to disney world back then because of it.
How funny that this was uploaded on my birthday! Great work on this video, I actually got linked to this from a fan that said my content was shown in this video, and I can see a few instances where it happens... -I am the only player that has lineouts of DDR SuperNOVA2 arcade machines in high quality. The mod menu shown in the video is actually from my True Love PFC video :P -The DDR Extreme Mod screen was taken from my lineout which I can tell from the poor conversion process with shadows streaking on screen. Bonus info: The mods x0.5, Brake and Wave are Challenge Mode only modifiers and are not actually available in the mod menu unless you hack the game. There a few places where you made mistakes, however you were surprisingly accurate with the knowledge you picked up on the series. DDR's history is vast and there have been a lot of changes implemented and removed! I will point out one major thing you forgot to mention though: Dancing Stage Featuring Dreams Come True. It is one of my favorite DDR games and its such a shame it got overlooked instead of Dancing Stage Featuring True Kiss Destination. XD Thanks again for taking the time to make this! I really enjoyed it! Also don't forget Round 1 will be getting DDR Ace at all locations as well this Summer! See you in the arcades!
I love this format, and appriciate how much time it definitley took you to make. -All of the X and X2 machines I've played on were also janky as hell. -I'd love to see more of these on other bemani titles, and would be happy to lend a hand in for a pump it up version.
@@MarzGurl for sure! I've got fond memories of the danceManiax live action intro video. Those people made that game look so cool. Also maybe I was 12 haha
The fact that the newer DDR games are connected to the internet also means any songs can be removed at any time, instead of having to wait for each new release to make changes to the old songlist, you can see what song gets removed in the middle of the lifespan of that release. also DDR 2014 didnt lose too many songs, though MAX, SN and X did.
Apparently the issues regarding DDR X (at least in America) came from Konami outsourcing the hardware manufacturing to Raw Thrills, who used different specs from Konami's own Japanese X cabs.
A fun retrospective. Currently I’m playing one A20 Plus, the second-to-most recent version as of commenting, at a local arcade with what I presume to be a converted 2013 cabinet. It used to have a Supernova 2, but then they managed to get connectivity to eAmusement. It’s been a nice way to spend time on weekends.
It was very well known on the DDR forums way back in Max 2's days. Jokes were made at the song's expense, even if the official title is hardly any better (Boy oh Boy mix). It's kinda forgotten now as it wasn't a popular Captain Jack song. People still remember Captain Jack (the song), In the Navy (due to its Maniac/Heavy/Expert chart), and Dream a Dream more than Little Boy.
I always found it strange that for the majority of the first several mixes, the game was primarily in English, but the exception of Pop'n Music which was largely in Japanese.

Super informative video and well done on all the research! Must have taken a lot of dedication and effort!! 4 years late to this video as I’ve just recently gotten back into the game ahaha
Thank you! In a roundabout way, you clarified why the more recent DDRs (2013- present) have been misses with me. No Naoki. I had no idea he left sometime in 2013.
Right now DDR Ace is having a 20th anniversary event. It doesn't seem very likely that they'll make an entirely new game when they keep updating this one via downloads. But new music for the anniversary is pretty great, too.

The reason DDR Extreme is so easy to find in North America is it was heavily bootlegged. There are only a handful of legit Extreme kits in NA, and they are in private collections. Additionally, Dancing Stage Fusion was the first time we saw a change to the hardware used in a DDR machine. 1st through Extreme all ran on System 573 hardware. Dancing Stage Fusion ran on a Konami Python unit(which was essentially a PlayStation 2 attached to an I/O board). This was the ONLY DDR release to run on Python. DDR SuperNOVA and SuperNOVA2 ran on the Python2 hardware. Python 2 was an actual Japanese PS2 attached to an I/O board. If you open a Python2 unit there is an untouched PS2 staring back at you. DDR X and onward runs on the BemaniPC hardware. The DDR X machines in America were NOT manufactured by Konami and this is why the quality was lower. The DDR X Japanese cabinets were just as high quality as the older cabinets you are used to.
My understanding is, that they were basically forced to move away from using the PS2 hardware machines because an EU ruling change meant that the mercury content was considered to high for distribution, which is why I don't think Europe got SuperNOVA2 AC (though we might have been screwed over regardless), and why they changed to the BemaniPC hardware. Also the quality difference of the various machines was stark when I visited Brighton and the SuperNOVA machine I tried was a pain to play on, but the nearby EuroMIX still played well, and a EuroMIX2 with a screen replacement also worked great too.

SuperNOVA 2 was the stopping point for me as that was the most recent mix I had easy access to as late as 2015. I have the console ports that I drag out occasionally (for old times sake) but maniac/heavy is off the table. Most places in my neck of the woods were either still running poorly-maintained EXTREME cabs or the abortion Raw Thrills put out. I'm showing my age :(
+Retro-GoldFish Whew, the video is way too long as it is. If I had mentioned every additional feature of every single cabinet, I still wouldn't be done.
Luckily, a "Round 1" arcade opened nearby to me which does have a DDR A machine. Pretty surreal to see it when the only other machine active locally is DDR Extreme. Never thought I'd see the day where a new DDR machine would be released in California.
+Spearra Seems more likely to open in California than anywhere else in the US. So far I've only heard of Round 1 and Dave & Buster's with the machines.
A lot of things must be said. 1- WONDERFUL! FUNNY! And such a past blast with amazing memories linked. You are awesome. (18:14) "OH MY GOD, SO LIKE, here's a machine i've never seen WITH MY OWN TWO EYES but I would give almost everything I have to be the ENORMOUS WHITE WOMAN playing it FOR THE HELL OF IT" I think I lost my breath just laughing at that... and I believe you! There are so many arcade cabinets i'm only dreaming to play on. 2- Kaylyn, it's weird, my good friend Joanie, who speaks French (as a first language like me) has a similar voice to yours... I don't want to sound weird, but this is awesome. She has a Twitch channel and is a great member in the Québec video game community. I had the feeling that she was the one talking throughout the entire video even though I think she isn't fluent enough. 3- Going to Japan next year during spring and i'm looking for a DDR location directory, especially for older cabinets... I miss playing the game and I prefer the original mixes from 1 through 7. DDR Freak has one, but come on, there must be more machines in Japan than the 46 registered ones on the website, plus, I don't know if it's up to date!
I have such fond memories playing DDR Max 1 & 2. It's too bad I haven't been able to find a good 1" foam dance pad for PS3. I haven't been able to play since I upgraded my system years ago.
When I young back then since I've been to so many arcades like that I never played DDR before but now I sure do love Dance Dance Revolution since it was my early middle or late 2000s nostalgia. 😎
I haven't actually looked to make sure you haven't yet, but if that's the case, id love to hear a retrospective on In the Groove and its effect on the DDR scene, especially after the lawsuit.

Most places in my neck of the woods were either still running poorly-maintained EXTREME cabs or the abortion Raw Thrills put out. I'm showing my age :(
Gotta love the Eyes on You (Sting) at the start
Oh, you were at MAGFest too? I absolutely loved all the dance machines there.
Yeah, I've been going for something like the last six years.
MarzGurl Haha, I started going this year, I definitely plan to go next year too!
you didnt mention the code for korean 3rd nmix that turns it into a 2nd mix >
+Retro-GoldFish Whew, the video is way too long as it is. If I had mentioned every additional feature of every single cabinet, I still wouldn't be done.
What was the code
And the SSR mode in 3rd MiX
I can now say I’m good at paranoia 180... you know the hardest song from 22 years ago
Ah yes. My freshman year in college was this. lol
Round One in Arlington surprisingly has absolutely no DDR. It has Pump It Up though.
(18:14) "OH MY GOD, SO LIKE, here's a machine i've never seen WITH MY OWN TWO EYES but I would give almost everything I have to be the ENORMOUS WHITE WOMAN playing it FOR THE HELL OF IT"
I think I lost my breath just laughing at that... and I believe you!
18 year and still DDR player of the DDR.start of the 1st DDR series of anime song of DDR 4th mix to DDR A.
Thank you for this comprehensive video.
I need to buy a ddr extreme machine
+lexingowzu emulator mame

When I young back then since I've been to so many arcades like that I never played DDR before
but now I sure do love Dance Dance Revolution since it was my early middle or late 2000s nostalgia. 😎
Very well researched material. Good job! :)
Awesome video I am also a Texas DDR player 😇
Oh, I'm surprised you didnt mention Dancing Stage featuring Dreams Come True here. The songs by that band are really good tbh.
awesome video im an old school ddr player and i love this work

this was way more interesting than I though it would be
DDR is dead in Europe, Konami hates us for reason unknown.
+Burnout Not just you. Konami hates all.
Not all, Konami loves the mobile market.
Burnout Luckily, DDR A is coming out in Europe in Spring 2018!

*wait its all Naoki Maeda?*
Always has been. 🔫
I have an arcade that is about 15 minutes away that has a perfectly functioning E-amuse system, even has DDR A in full functioning form!
It is MarzGurl.
Just found this, as I have gotten more serious about playing DDR now that I can play it at home! You should totes do an update featuring Ace!
I haven't actually looked to make sure you haven't yet, but if that's the case, id love to hear a retrospective on In the Groove and its effect on the DDR scene, especially after the lawsuit.
