I highly recommend the AstroLab. I wouldn’t recommend the Keylab without getting more info. What’s your budget for a keyboard? Are you looking for a midi controller or a full performance keyboard?
@@thegiftedhandsmusic I will be using the keyboard with vsts and auv3 apps on ipad. The budget isn't really an issue, although I won't spend $4000 on a Montage just to use it as a midi controller. I just want good controls on the keyboard and also a good keybed for main keys (mainly church services). I looked at different midi controllers like the studiologic studio (same keybed as keylab 88) and studiologic grand. But they all lack controls (faders, pads etc.) I was thinking to pair one of them with the studiologic mixface, but I would rather go one step higher which is the numa X piano 88 with built-in soundn or the roland fantom-08 that has controls on-board and built-in sound. So, what will be the best investment for you for a budget between let's say $1000 - $1500?
I can speak to the Keylab as I own two of them-- A MK288 and a 61 key Essential. If you play live and want a laptop on the stage with you running Mainstage, Ableton Live or even Komplete Kontrol or Analog Lab as a standalone, the Keylabs are great. The 88 MKii has a heavy action and you really have to go into the velocity settings of each plugin to even this out or you will have to smash the keys to get Forte or higher and then the softest volumes don't really come out at all. So, it works great but the velocity is a mess. The Essential has the opposite problem, it's way to easy to get Forte. They are not matched up to the sounds in plug- ins like a dedicated board like a MODX , Fantom or Nautilus where the action is tailor made to respond with the best velocity for each sound. In fact it's a hot mess and many other controllers have a similar problem. The Astrolab action really matches analog lab though so that is a non-issue. In fact I think it sounds incredible and what other keyboard gives you a prophet, a Moog, an Oberheim, DX7 Etc? And a great piano, EPs and organs. You can use Analog Lab at home, find sounds, tweak them and send them to the Astrolab and use the sounds live. It does seem limited by only two sounds at once layered or split and really to me that is its weakness. I say go Astrolab unless you need a laptop on stage. If you use an Ipad, Astrolab is too expensive to just be a controller. An old workstation or stage piano hooked to the Ipad would have much better action and velocity settings.
@@curious011 Hey Michael, thanks for your reply and a quick review of the Keylab 88 mk2. I didn't notice someone replied, because I haven't received any notifications. I think I would need to try it out for myself, but I would have to board a plane to be able to get my hands on one. I'll just wait for the time being until I can try one for myself. Thank you very much!

What about your review of the Arturia Keylab 88 Mk2? I'm leaning heavily towards buying it.
I highly recommend the AstroLab.

A video review on the Keylab 88 Mark 2 would also be of great help!
