I just found your videos this morning and I've been watching them non-stop! Your videos are hilarious yet informative. Sometimes living in Japan can be really stressful. Thanks for reminding me of how awesome it is. Keep the videos coming!
"Come to Japan now when the yen is utterly worthless" Best tip ever!! 😂😂😂 I've been watching your videos since 2016 and I've lost count how many times I've watched each one! You have a hilarious sense of humor and very good filmmaking and story telling skills! Finally planning a trip to Japan next year and so excited to do some of the things I've seen in your videos! ♥️
Wow! Amazing! I absolutely recomend this information as a Japanese person who loves to travel inside and outside of Japan enjoying genuine local experiences and beautiful nature sceneries!
honestly, I can watch any of these videos over and over again. some of my favorite content on TH-cam. You should do a gaming cafe video with some of your pals.
Please don't ever change Chris I don't care what you're talking about you are charismatic funny and all around cool dude keep up the good work brother. Best vloggers in Japan hands down
Hello Mr. Broad, Thanks for all of your videos, I really enjoy your sarcastic, somewhat dry British humor. I'm planning to study in Japan for a year, and I was wondering how good the internet is? Thanks again, and keep up the good work mate.
You talked about having a playlist with 80's music when driving along the Japanese countryside. Would you be so awesome as to sharing it so we won't have to spend hours creating our own?
Don't listen to people, It's because of you and your videos that me and my girlfriend will be moving/traveling to japan. Keep up the videos dude, we both like your humor!
Always wanted to say this mate... but you have such great production value and a great sense of wit and presentation. Good luck with finding that dream job (even though to alot of people you're living it). Ganbatte! #keepontravelling
This video popped up after having watched you since the channel started. After reading the ‘get out’ chapter last night it was amazing to hear you speak about wanting to write about that experience one day in this video! Absolutely amazing 👏👏
I might be biased because my father and all my relatives are English and also Chris has the best name in the world, BUT this man is my favourite youtuber. videos are always engaging throughout leaving you wanting more lol. I am an exercise trainer and when i come to Japan i am definitely willing to train you up mate.
I know your wanting an answer from Chris but what I've heard, jobs have massive hours due to it having a massive working culture and some people in Japan have 11 hour jobs in the city, with even people laying on the floor of the subways due to exhaustion.
There are a large number of foreigners in Japan who are not English Teachers. However if you do expect an alternative job you will very likely be required to have N1 level Japanese. As for the hours issue, Richard corrected correctly. As an English Teacher and being a foreigner your hours are very kind, overtime is not expected. In short you're not an 'official' Teacher you're like a guest speaker. So that's nice if you want free time to do something
+TacoWrath From the people I know who are in the JET program, the amount of free time can range. It depends a lot on your engagement with the school (helping with extracurricular activities/clubs/events - sports festivals - etc etc). Some weeks he has to work some serious overtime, and others he has a little more free time. If you're going for the JET though, it might be best to engage with the students and community as much as possible if you want to extend your contract. You do have the weekends off though, so that's nice. And of course, you do get all of the holiday time off, depending on the school. If we're talking about outside of the JET Program, hours in corporate Japan can be brutal. Not sure if this is true, but I heard that if you fall asleep in the workplace, they accept it because it's a sign of exhaustive work the day before. As for English teaching outside of the JET program, I don't really know. I'd assume it'd be similar to the JET, but with a little more freedom...but I don't know that for sure.
After 3 visits comprising about 7 weeks over 12 years im far from a Japan expert but I have to agree with Osaka being a great city, as is Nagoya. The best experiences we had were just walking the streets and if you see a lot of locals going down a side street, follow them. That is where we found the best things includeing a perfume salesman who loved and knew a lot about NZ near the Ueno station. We also like to go to a destination, like Tokyo Tower and walk back, you will be amazed how much ground you cover and what you find.
do 3 things in Tokyo. I did all of them. I was in tokyo for 10 days, no plan, just going around in August and being baked alive, or being baked alive, and the sky did choose to wash away my sweat and shut down the metro, being it was flooded. I went to Shinjuku with some random guys from my capsule hotels, really nice fellows. I walked around different parts of Tokyo every day, for at least, until I had to find a mall with AC. And then continue on after I have cooled down.
Me and my husband will go Japan in April. This video is very very helpful as it's our first time trip to Japan and we have no idea where to start really!
I am amazed that you J-vloggers all know each other and are so friendly with each other and do stuff together but still manage to have such diversity in your videos. Thanks to all of you. If you meet them again, let the others know. ;)
Ahhhh, you went into Death Match at the Golden Gai :D I remember that Yoda, I remember it well :D Nice place though, I don't know if you had the bar tender who has long hair and wears the Wayne's World cap (I can't remember his name but he's a really cool guy :) Quite friendly and I've seen him working there the last two years that I've been. (I assume he owns the place??) Another place I would recommend in the Gai is just opposite Death Match and it's called the Cambiare. It's a small bar themed on the movie Suspiria. I'm friends with one of the bar tenders who works there. It's quite accommodating and friendly for foreigners so it's most definitely worth a look. But yeah, I like the Golden Gai a lot, it's one of my favorite places to frequent when in Tokyo during the night.
oh man ... I love these videos to death! Especially your sarcastic jokes, reaction to comments and q&d. Also I love that you are full of passion when you describing sth, your answer are clear and straight and often kind. Take care!
Absolutely made no sense whatsoever, which, to my muddled and rather childlike mind made everything crystal clear! Always enjoy your videos, not only for content but for great editing - I don't always comment though, (which makes no sense to me!! :) )
I stumbled upon your video while searching for "teaching English in Japan." I must say that I fell in love with your program. You are funny, intelligent and humble. You are very insightful about viewing Japan from a different perspective. Please let me know if you are still in Japan! I'd love to pick your brain. Thanks!
2002 I stayed in a capsule hotel in Asakusa. It was only 2900 yen a night. There was a communal bath on the top floor and you could lie in the bath with a great view of the city. As far as I know its still there
Just discovered your channel, and as a fellow Brit you keep me in stitches! Cheers! As for a question, how useful is English for everyday living in Japan? I've been told multiple times not to bother learning Japanese because everyone in the country can speak good English. Have I just wasted the last two years of my life learning a pointless language?!
Whoever told you this either has only been to really touristy places and big international hotels. English only gets you so far so study is never a waste, it's like a game of unlockables the more you know the more you can experience.
Honestly, I don't really know what you'd do in Hiroshima after about 2 days. There's the Peace Park, and Miyajima... and....? I suppose there are some minor things, but I wouldn't have people go longer than 2 full days. And.. honestly if you only have a week I'd probably skip it altogether, as important as the Peace Park is. It's just... really far out. 1 week: Tokyo 4 days, Kyoto 2 days. Osaka or Nara, 1 day. 2 weeks: Tokyo 6 days, Hiroshima 2 days, Kyoto/Osaka/Nara 5 days. 1 day to relax, or put somewhere else
THIS IS THE THIRD VIDEO IN A ROW THAT I WATCHED THAT HAD NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON IT.....so i will say something nice!!! I think that your videos are soo cool and are helpful and I could stare into your blue eyes all day (btw this took alot of courage to post in public lol)
+Legendaryvenomz I can answer that because I watch a lot of live streams of Japanese channels. It's not too different to your average country really. NHK is a bit boring, TV Asahi and TV Tokyo on the other hand make good anime and drama. It is a little bit weird.
If you go on streamup and type in sherming there's different numbers and each one is a different channel. There's also wjj-jptv which changes channel depending on the programme. If they go down I don't know what I'll do! I would've put a bet on wjj being the one that's more likely to stay being as it mainly just shows variety and dramas.
+Legendaryvenomz - Commercials, great. News and weather, incredible (provided you speak/read Japanese). Baseball and Jpn sports, also good. Everything else.... so bad - they have a J-celeb panel for virtually everything on talk shows. Anime and some dramas are good.
I am pleased to hear that ye like Osaka as I was born in Osaka pref. and raised in Hyogo pref. just next to Osaka pref. I still live not far away from Osaka city.
I like how some of the people who say the things you say are wrong, have probably never even been to Japan or only watch a few anime shows. A message to those people: This man LIVES in Japan, he will know much more than you.
Thanks for all your videos. I'm now on my final day after three weeks in Japan. Did Tokyo, Takayama, Kanizawa, Hiroshime, Kyoto and Mount Fuji. Your videos have really got me into the spirit and I've had the best few weeks ever.... And I'm now smuggling a shitload of Pocari Sweat back to London!
Alright, so, first of all, your videos are of the very rare kind of entertaining and engrossing content one would expect to (and should) find more often on the World WIDE Web. Secondly, and here comes the question, how would you set up/organise a line of study for a beginner in Japanese? What books (text books, vocabularies, dictionaries and what not) would you say are compulsory for someone whose goal is to understand intermediate to advanced Japanese? Any websites, better if free of anything that involves picking up your wallet? P.S.: I perfectly know you already made a video based on a similar request some years ago, but let's assume I have all the time needed and not just 6 months P.S.S.:is there any book of Japanese where all, or most, of the grammar is displayed and ordered somehow. For example, look up "The New Penguin Russian Course" on the Internet, and glancing at some pdf you will see what I mean. The best thing is it's not "school focused". Thanks and keep being great!
I agree with you about Touhoku, I haven't seen nearly enough of it, but I have to say my favorite place in Touhoku so far is Matsushima. If you haven't been, go, it's very peaceful and relaxing, and you can walk over to Fukuurajima and wander through the nature preserve, and there's a nice shelter at the top of the island where you can sit and watch the sea and the 200 or so islands in the bay.
Good day Abroadin Japan I am also currently living in Japan. I have been following your channel for about a year now and I have to say you are doing a fine work. Also have to agree with you on how Tohoku is so underrated, since living here for about a year now and travelling through most of the mainland, I have always felt Tohoku gives a sense of calmness and peacefullness other places doesn't offer.
#AskAbroad What 'romantic' encounters have you had in Japan? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) What do you spend your weekends doing? How many close friends have you met in Japan, like Natsuki? Can you give us a tour of Natsuki's barbershop/hairdresser's? What inspired you to start TH-cam? Is the name 'AbroadInJapan' a play on A Broad - As in Chris Broad..In Japan? xD I always thought it was for some reason. Are you into video games? 1v1merust If so, what are the types of video games released in Japan like? More specifically, are there any ways in which they differ from western ones? (Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.) After being in Japan for so long, do you feel like you belong there now and did you get used to all the people staring because you're foreign or complimenting your Japanese after you said something so basic as 'sumimasen'? Or is it not AS bad as a lot of TH-camrs in Japanese make it out to be? (Some I have watched get really pissed off by it o.o) How difficult is it for foreigners to get jobs aside from the JET-type teaching programs? How often do you come back to England, despite David Cameron being PM? (Unless you're conservative then this just got awkward) How tall are you and what is the average height of Japanese people? I want to know if they will think I'm Godzilla or something when I visit, can't be dealing with that. Do you plan on doing any more educational videos like how to sort out housing and moving to Japan etc. type videos for others looking to follow your footsteps? Did I ask too many questions? All jokes aside, thank you for making your videos Chris, they keep me entertained on each upload which are very rewatchable for when I go on ABroadInJapan binges xD I love your content!
+Nico Varley , If so, what are the types of video games released in Japan like? More specifically, are there any ways in which they differ from western ones? (Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.) *Sighs* really? people are still remembering the whole Rapelay fiasco that damaged alot oportunities for both non-porn and porn Japanese game to be released outside of Japan because of it? To answer your question , while do Japan do get western games released too , like COD and others , console gaming used to be the norm in Japan while pc games mostly for the small companies that couldnt afford the developer kits for consoles released they game mostly for PC but then Steam and mobile gaming started to get quite big in Japan , the former with their summer sales and also because many store started to sell mid-range gaming PCs therefore making the PC market in Japan getting bigger and then there is android phones and you can make apps and games in Windows/Macs/Linux Computers rather than be forced to have a Mac Computer just to make a fucking app. Japan games are usually RPGs and visual novels (they can be either pornographic ones or not) with a few special case here and there. How difficult is it for foreigners to get jobs aside from the JET-type teaching programs? It depends how much Japanese you know and if you have a degree in something
SYCKODELICUS I mentioned rapelay as a joke haha don't worry, I don't believe that Japan releases stuff like that regularly, it's quite like the rarity of manhunt in the west as an example xD and ooh so they make a majority of JRPG's and VN's then? I really love JRPG's o.o Thank you for the quick answer! Also, so if I have the qualifications and the language (especially specialist terminology for something like molecular biology) I would have similar chances to anyone else?^^
Wow thanks for that walking 12 hr advice and absorbing everything in. I would do that in every travel I'll do. Definitely will do this when i travel to Osaka in 2 weeks.
so insincere, was insincere about planning on learning how to be more sincere. Based on this you can clearly see that anything he says is lies. I bet he didn't even give his credit card info to Sony's Nigerian prince.
Been here about a week, planning on staying at least a year. Thanks for the cool videos, just ordered my genki books to help me talk to my new neighbors.
Im sorry you had that experience in Golden Gai...Its not a tourist trap, since 75% of the small bars are members only and you can not go in as a tourist. I always make sure to stay near golden Gai so I can walk home as I spend most nights there while I am on vacation. Some Bars are rather expensive, some are not. I have my favourites and I have met the most incredible of people in these nights. Its all part of the atmosphere. I practically live in Golden Gai at night
The coolest bars do not have a cover charge and it is not touristy at all, you just have to know where to go and look. Only spend my evenings with locals and some cool tourists who manage to find the good places.
The Frankie Munez comment made me crack up! I am glad you can have a laugh about it as well. Good sport. I like your videos that I have seen so far. Keep up the good work!
So jazzed that you're doing this- i'm currently dedicating my life to saving up money for a two-month work away stay in tokyo next May and this is the sort of video I need. I can't wait for more!

Can't believe there was no "What is the most awkward thing to happen to you?" question D:
+JimJamX The topic was about travel, so im sure that someone asked it.
+Ccoolty I see the Frankie Muniz, sort of, but not the Johnny Depp.
Drove around Hokkaido listening to 80s songs on my Spotify. The best. Big in Japan!
What is Godzilla like? How many buildings have you seen him take out? What is his weakness?
Mothra.
Hopfluy he can save Japan from North Korea. Because only he's allowed to destroy Japan.

There is a city named kamakura a 4:18. I got excited as i thought it said karakura. If you don't know karakura is the town where ichigo lives
What is TV like in Japan?
+Legendaryvenomz I can answer that because I watch a lot of live streams of Japanese channels. It's not too different to your average country really. NHK is a bit boring, TV Asahi and TV Tokyo on the other hand make good anime and drama. It is a little bit weird.
Commercials are the best !!!!!!!!!👍
+Tomos Burton where do you watch streams at?

+Dan ‘Ikerin’ Rosenberg As someone who can't read Japanese, I wonder what the beard thing is about xD (34).
+Therockbrothersmc "beard or no beard? which one"
Dan Rosenberg Oh thank you very much :D!
+Therockbrothersmc well, let Chris answer the questions though...
I am pleased to hear that ye like Osaka as I was born in Osaka pref. and raised in Hyogo pref. just next to Osaka pref. I still live not far away from Osaka city.
I'd also want to know the 80's vibe song in the background, don't leave us hanging Chris!
I like how some of the people who say the things you say are wrong, have probably never even been to Japan or only watch a few anime shows. A message to those people: This man LIVES in Japan, he will know much more than you.
Have you ever encountered a tentacled monstrosity? And has it probed every orifice of your body yet? That would unmistakebagely be like a magic.
+Sefearion Those are actually great videos
+Sefearion This is relevant to everyday life in Japan.
Sefearion
Would it surpass the sky's on time?

I'm in Tohoku and staying for 3 yrs, are there any hidden gems you might recommend? Thanks!

It's good to see you've retained sarcastic British humour a truly cherished part of British culture.
P.S.: I perfectly know you already made a video based on a similar request some years ago, but let's assume I have all the time needed and not just 6 months
P.S.S.:is there any book of Japanese where all, or most, of the grammar is displayed and ordered somehow. For example, look up "The New Penguin Russian Course" on the Internet, and glancing at some pdf you will see what I mean. The best thing is it's not "school focused".
Thanks and keep being great!

From a dating perspective, how does dating Japanese women compare to dating English women (or Western women)?
elindred it's a shit time bro, Japanese women are genetically hardwired for misogyny.
Reg Greentree
How is that a bad thing?
Four years later, and I only now realize that that tweet came from Reggie Fils-Amis....
Good day Abroadin Japan
I am also currently living in Japan.
Were you aware that one of the questions appeared to be asked by the president of Nintendo America? (Reginald Fils-Aime)
+David Ellis Yeah, ditch the Nigerian prince and start asking Nintendo for a job.
+David Ellis at what time?
+DownFromTheSky89 It's question number 12, just after 8:30.

#askabroad I am a giant (6ft 5"/196cm) will i bang my head on every doorway?
+Michael Grant not every one
+Michael Grant I'm not even tall and I still hit my head in the toilet.
+fireaza :P
+Michael Grant I'm 195cm and yes, 80% of doorways u will have to duck, especially on trains T_T
I'm learning Japanese right now! It is difficult, but fun!
今は日本語を勉強している!難しいので楽しい!
Another great and useful video for my collection of videos on what to do and see in Japan when I finally get myself to the Land of the Rising Sun.

What 'romantic' encounters have you had in Japan? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
What do you spend your weekends doing?
How many close friends have you met in Japan, like Natsuki?
Can you give us a tour of Natsuki's barbershop/hairdresser's?
What inspired you to start TH-cam?
Is the name 'AbroadInJapan' a play on A Broad - As in Chris Broad..In Japan? xD I always thought it was for some reason.
Are you into video games? 1v1merust
If so, what are the types of video games released in Japan like? More specifically, are there any ways in which they differ from western ones? (Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.)
After being in Japan for so long, do you feel like you belong there now and did you get used to all the people staring because you're foreign or complimenting your Japanese after you said something so basic as 'sumimasen'? Or is it not AS bad as a lot of TH-camrs in Japanese make it out to be? (Some I have watched get really pissed off by it o.o)
How difficult is it for foreigners to get jobs aside from the JET-type teaching programs?
How often do you come back to England, despite David Cameron being PM? (Unless you're conservative then this just got awkward)
How tall are you and what is the average height of Japanese people?
(Obviously not all video games but some, like rapelay... ._.)
*Sighs* really? people are still remembering the whole Rapelay fiasco that damaged alot oportunities for both non-porn and porn Japanese game to be released outside of Japan because of it?
Also, so if I have the qualifications and the language (especially specialist terminology for something like molecular biology) I would have similar chances to anyone else?^^
lol Natsuki s probably gonna tell you thr magic words
2:51 is a pic of Kagura
Wow thanks for that walking 12 hr advice and absorbing everything in. I would do that in every travel I'll do. Definitely will do this when i travel to Osaka in 2 weeks.
Is Japan seriously as far forward in technology as the country is made out to be?
+TheBackstreetNets No if anything, it's seriously far behind.
+Abroadin Japan whoa is this comment serious? This seems like a shock to me from someone outside of Japan! Please elaborate sometime.
+Abroadin Japan agreed...
+Abroadin Japan Would love a small video on this subject. :)
+Abroadin Japan Not true, I bought a Genocidal Robot from Japan that has seat warmers AND mobile wifi.
Will you be my friend?
+DanzQueen Now that's a good question. Will you be her friend Chris? WILL YOU? we may never know
+DanzQueen fuck buddy?
Well this has taken an odd turn
so insincere, was insincere about planning on learning how to be more sincere. Based on this you can clearly see that anything he says is lies. I bet he didn't even give his credit card info to Sony's Nigerian prince.
Visited Golden Gai today finally after watching this video forever ago! Totally worth it, thanks a TON for the recommendation!
Been here about a week, planning on staying at least a year. Thanks for the cool videos, just ordered my genki books to help me talk to my new neighbors.
Reggie Fils-Aimé
Is it true, that people grope you on the trains? If that is true, I will definitely go there.
Dankest meme in Japan?
0:58 That's amazing! You should have shown that for longer!
love this video! it was funny, informative, and just entertaining with the way you started out to your demeanor
cant believe he recommended golden gai -.- its a complete scam trust me
Yeah I've been back since making this and I decided I hate it - at least eating/drinking there. Massive tourist trap. Still, it looks cool.
+Abroadin Japan yup, definitely looking cool, thx for making these videos I really enjoy them!
+Doge overpriced, cover charge even for the shittiest bar, very touristy.. didnt like it there
The coolest bars do not have a cover charge and it is not touristy at all, you just have to know where to go and look. Only spend my evenings with locals and some cool tourists who manage to find the good places.
The Frankie Munez comment made me crack up! I am glad you can have a laugh about it as well. Good sport. I like your videos that I have seen so far. Keep up the good work!
Really enjoying your sense of humor. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Everyone wants to land in Tokyo, but I'm going to Osaka, so I was quite pleased hearing your favorite place is on that side of the country.
So jazzed that you're doing this- i'm currently dedicating my life to saving up money for a two-month work away stay in tokyo next May and this is the sort of video I need. I can't wait for more!
it's official , you're the best J vlogger in Japan hands down , love you mate no homo :)
