- I had another chance to pick up a bag of coins that had been part of someone's collection. I didn't even look at them at the shop, but I could see SILVER, and some old stuff, too. There were more than a few suprises in here. In this video we'll dive in and answer the question: Did I get a deal?

Hey CAD,
From the Netherlands here. Just to let you know, Dutch 1 and 2,5 and 3 Gulden coins all have edge lettering since their introduction in 1818. It always been God zij (or ZY pre 1901) met ons. This lettering does exist on the Dutch 2 Euro coin up to this day aswell.
Have a good day
Very cool! Thanks for sharing that! And thanks for watching!
James you did great with the purchase of all those coins. If anything, it had a major coolness factor. Coins with arabic numerals are some that I gravitate towards when I search through world coins bins. I’ve gotten pretty good at reading the dates on them. Same with Japanese coins. Bravo on the coin with multi coat of arms, hexagonal shaped one. You had wondering if the 1909 Indian Head Cent was going to have a S mint mark! Thanks for sharing. Take care.
This was definitely lots of fun to go through, for sure. I love picking up lots like this!
The silver value got you to 100 quicker than I expected.
When you couldn't find the date on the Italian coin I suspected it would be on the rim. I knew some Papal States coins did that as well. But those also didn't necessarily say the date but the year of the pope's reign, similar to Japan.
I was surprised, too. Even just at melt, when I looked at that small bag just before filming I thought it was going to be much harder to get to $100 than it turned out.
If I get a dirty coin like this proof I usually wipe it with a microfiber cloth - it's much safer than it sounds and leaves no scratches :)
Plus, the 1971 half dollar has definitely been buried, in such conditions coppernickel changes colour to brown.
Microfibre sounds safer than steel wool!!
Nice pickups. I would never advise anyone to clean coins but if you are going to try I would dip them in ez est. Great video!
Thanks - I'm going to have to look that product up. I've never heard of it until today!
Super deal, James! Take these deals all day! The Italian coin was a stunner, with great eye appeal. Get yourself a bottle of Nic-a-Date it goes a long way and will help you at least fill in the holes in your album.
Might have to go on my Christmas list this year!
Definitely worth picking up! There's some I don't have!
Thanks!
It’s a shame that Ike is so damaged. I don’t think it would make much difference if it were cleaned, so I’d love to see it! Pretty cool you got one of those, because I’m in the middle of doing a video about Ike dollars. I rarely see anyone talking about them. Neat coins! Those silver half dollars are great, especially those walkers. So much silver in this. This foreign silvers are cool! You made out like a bandit for $100! Great score!
Thanks so much - I'm definitely happy with this purchase! I'll post a video as soon as I get my hands on the right cleaning solution for silver coins. Thanks!
Very nice showcase, congratulations on the purchase! Interesting that "GOD ZIJ MET ONS" was also on the 1 gulden coins, I never knew that! The lettering is also currently present on the edge of all Dutch 2 euro coins! And I love the Italian 500 Lire, it has a fantastic design!
I'd love to have some tutorials on coin cleaning! I have some Austrian proof sets from the 70s which the Austrian mint unfortunately packaged in PVC plastic, so almost all of them show damage. I'd love to try to do some work there, and a tutorial would be very helpful :)
I'll see what I can come up with! Thanks!
I'm usually the resident expert on (Dutch) euro coins at James' channel, but great to see you here too, CadEur 😜
@@Alrik.Oh nice to see you here too! :)
If I had that 71 proof Ike, I would dip it . That looks like it might be PVC residue and something like EZ-Est might work very well. Lets face it, you can't really make it any worse than it already is, melt will still be melt, but it should look a whole lot better. Just my opinion.... Have a great day!
Thanks, Roy - I think you're right. It looks terrible as it is and it's never going to be worth more than melt, in all likelihood! No harm in cleaning it!
@@CADRollHunter Roy is right, I would dip the Ike.
@@greggelato Alright! Consider your vote counted!
@@CADRollHunteri would like to see that!
@@CADRollHunteras much as I hate getting rid of the collectable aspect of it, it isn’t worth too, too much
Where do you buy these bags of american coins? Thank you.
A local antique dealer who often buys estate lots.
Interesting bag of goodies
You did well for a hundred bucks
Thanks!!
Nice purchase. I never clean coins but that ike dollar needs help. I have some brown box ike dollars that have some hazy toning that almost looks like your coins.
Yes, it needs some help for sure! We'll see if I can find something that will work! I can't make it worse, that's for sure!
Some nice coins James great deal
Thanks, Kevin!
Great pickup!
Thanks! I always love looking through odd lots like this!
3:25 That is a good idea, it is effectively worth the silver value with next to no premium so it makes sense to play with it.
15:30 That looks like a type 1 to me in the upper left of the three in the lower right.
Alright! I might just have to try it!
A good variety of coins in this lot.
Not a bad little grab-bag of stuff!
Great video! I use Numista all the time. I’ve watched some of your videos where you’re in Mexico and doing some hunting. I found a 2011 1 peso with the elongated font, also called the oval ‘O’s. Numista has it listed but with all dashes in the with columns. Do you have any info on this coin ? Have you found one before? I can’t seem to find any info outside of Numista. Thanks!
I don't have that one in my collection. Since they don't have sales data to populate the chart, it would suggest that it's pretty rare. Definitely a great find!
@@CADRollHunter thanks! A friend gave me a few pesos she had picked up years ago. I’ll let her know
Hi James
You made a terrific deal for $100 Canadian ....Enjoyed your video and a new subscriber. Continued success in your purchases.
Thanks so much - I really appreciate it! I hope you enjoy my videos - feel free to check out my past videos. You might find some more that interest you!
a coin cleaning vid would be cool
Noted!
Cleaning coins of little more than scrap silver value is a good idea especially for proof or proof like coins. Please do a video on cleaning as I am a metal detectorist and need to clean 25 cent, $1 and $2 coins to return to the bank. I also must thank you for your video on the King Charles coins as they are now all sold out and my wife ordered hers and got a confirmation number for 2024 delivery. I can see that box of rolls as an easy double in value as they will be first strikes.
I'll defintiely be doing at least a couple of videos on cleaning coins - seems that folks are interested! And I'm glad you were able to order the King Charles coins in time!
Great video, I’m a duel CAD/US citizen living in the US and it was nice to see you talking about American currency. Love your channel!
Awesome! Thank you! I appreciate it!
I want to see a video of cleaning coins!
Coming soon!
yes, do a video of cleaning coins. thank you!
Thanks for weighing in!
Well, I think you had a good purchase. Anyways enjoyed your video, hope you have a great rest if the day!
Thank you! You too!
You did well. Would like to see a coin cleaning video.
Thanks! I'll see what I can do!
I know we are not supposed to clean coins but sometimes it is necessary. If the appearance is similar to your Ike dollar you can only help the coin. that being said if you aren't sure don't clean
That's good advice for anyone. In this case, I agree, I can't make it worse, so I'll give it a shot!
Nice . You did great. Keep it up.
Thank you, I'll try!! Happy Holidays, Abeer!!
Wait, how did you have this for months and not dive into it immediately??
I know, right?! I actually have a whole bunch of stuff waiting for me to look at. I try not to think about it!! But it is hard when I remember I have a lot of things I haven't even looked at yet and don't even know what's in there!
I got a 1913 buffalo nickel in like extra fine condition, but its a type 2 not a type 1, but still I found it in a box
Wow! That's a super find!
The Ike dollar can't look any worse than what is does, so by all means clean it.
Sounds like a plan! Thanks for watching!
I just got 25 mackeral fish for $41.25
Nice! Throw them in a fountain and see if they can swim! (OK - don't do that!!).
Hello
Hello! Thanks for watching!
If you are till taking votes i would like to see a coin cleaning video for coins that are never going to be worth more than their melt value.
Thanks for casting your vote!!
Dip it. As ugly as it is, value can't go backwards.
I think you're right on that! Let's see if we can make that Ike shine!
Great Pickup for that price, always awesome to find silver under spot:) Unfortunately no hidden Gems or good collectible coins, but silver is silver:)
I was hapy with the lot, for sure. It's always a bit of a gamble when you don't have a true sense of what's in the bag - but I did alright! Thanks for watching!
@@CADRollHunterAlways love watching your stuff:) Let me know if your are interested in exchanging contacts and do a collaberation at some point, maybe a penny battle, but i have a few other ideas that might be better discussed outside the comment section:)
