  • In the Bahamas, Jonathan joins shark biologist Dr. Stephen Kajiura from Florida Atlantic University to perform an experiment which demonstrates how the electrosensory system of sharks works.
    JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD is an Emmy Award-winning underwater science/adventure program that airs on public television in the United States.

    The Sharks bumping into the camera makes them look so cute

    The little "bonk!" When they bump the camera! Sharks are cute when people aren't trying to make them scary

    this show is so good, you cant tell right away behind all the big and loud TV flash (which is necessary to attract and maintain viewers) but every episode seems to have something really interesting for me to google and investigate, especially as a new diver

      seems a little backhanded but probably for a reason, is there an article or video youd recommend to explain this sense in more detail?

      Requiem sharks have a clear, nicitating membrane that can cover and protect the shark’s eyes. Mackerel sharks like the Great White don’t have this ‘eyelid’, so they roll their eyes back to protect them.

    As always I love your program and tune in at lunch time every day. However on your Shark Electro Sensory Experiment: I would like to comment. I see a design flaw with Dr. Kajiura's experiment with electro-magnetic energy. The main problem is that his neutral stimuli (control) and the experimental stimuli are with-in 12" of each other. If the shark approaches either one or the other then who is to say that the shark was not responding to the control stimuli vs. the experimental stimuli? In fact just random movement of the shark would put him in close proximity of one or the other. I would suggest separating the two stimuli by at least 15 to 20 feet, and not in the same plane. If they are in the same plane the shark could swim over one and also the other, thus from a statistical standpoint there would be no difference in the null. I would also manipulate the intensity and the frequency of the electro-magnetic field. This would produce a lot of data just ripe for publication. I think the design presented is worth pursuing but the methodology probably should be changed.. Mike Malloy, Corpus Christi, Tx.

    So basically, the sensory holes on their snout are whiskers for a cat or dog so they know when something is near their mouth and how far away from their mouth it is?

    • @sharkodon658
      @sharkodon658 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no they use it to detect something below the sand or in total darkness. Whiskers are primitive in comparison.

    • @sharkodon658
      @sharkodon658 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think cats and dogs rely more on their eyes and nose

      SHARK ODON I understand that but since they are in the water, just swimming would push the whiskers back causing them to be useless. So having electrosensory would make up for the face they don't need to see where they bite.

    • @ness6765
      @ness6765 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its extremely rare for sharks to attack scuba divers. They usually only attack humans at the surface because they mistake them for other animals like seals.

    • @sharkodon658
      @sharkodon658 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      actually its not just that they rarely attack scuba divers but just as rarely they attack people on the surface.
      shark attacks are EXTREMLY rare. there are maybe 50 a year in the whole world. its more likely that you die from a falling coconut.
      even more rare is that these end up deadly. that are maybe 5 out of these 50 and thats not because the shark eats you but because you bleed out or drown while in shock.
      You got to understand that sharks dont prey on humans, if they did you could never even enter the ocean. They infact dont even quite now what you are because most of them have never seen a human in their live. And thats why attacks occur. Unlike humans sharks dont have hands and the way they "test what u are made of is by biting. They aren't biting really hard for another shark it wouldn't be deadly just a little injury bit because of our soft anatomy that the shark is unaware of you might be missing a leg or an arm, but NEVER a head. Thats because the shark doesn't have the intention to eat you and thats why they will always leave you alone after the attack because he realised you are not tasty or on his "menu"
      The only reason why people die in a shark attack is because help sometimes comes to late.

      Sharks appear to have learned though evolution that attacking unfamiliar targets doesn't often end well. For example, they might be poisonous.

      @ness Sorry but that is just dumb myth that was proved wrong too many times. Reason why they don't attack because there are too many divers and they are not so big. Lonely diver would be in a big trouble.

      @Shark Odon Most of things you wrote are very wrong. Bunch of theories without any proofs. Real truth is (proven in real life) that shark will attack you if he see that he can win.
      It will also probably eat you (also proven too many times). Maybe he will not like your neoprene suit but he will be satisfied with your meat.

    The small size of the electric field may be more like the Lemon shark would prefer as food. The Tiger-Shark may not be interested in prey that would produce such a field in that area, ( sand bottom). What would happen if the field or location changed?
