I can’t believe I am addicted to the Hoof GP. I live in a city and only see cows in a field when I drive to the country. )Which is rare). I saw my first cow when I was 9 when I went to camp in Vermont. I’m impressed with how charming you are. Thanks for the wonderful entertainment at the hoof end of a cow or bull. You are adorable and I just love you, and I’m old enough to be your grandma! 😉😍😘

The fact that you point out a different school of trimming and how you incorporate aspects of it...so cool. I also really liked how you made a point of saying "if you were a vet you would cut it away, but I'm not". Some of the other contributors would go for the bloody content to get views regardless of the cows health.
And yes, those feet look much neater.

I was shocked to see someone on another channel hit blood right away. Graeme is so careful not to. The gent on the other channel was hacking away with a dull knife, it took forever, and I didn't trust him. He was not a newbie, either.

Being open to other ways of doing something means you're also open to learning if a better method is developed. That's a good attitude for any profession. As for not cutting into live tissue, yes he avoids it. There's a lot more that goes into a surgical procedure like that than just a scalpel. The cool thing is with proper hoof trimming, a lot of these cows and bulls get to avoid getting to the point they need a vet.

    • @hilarypower6217
      @hilarypower6217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think I'm right in saying that it would actually be illegal for Graeme to cut into any live tissue. That can only be done by a qualified vet.

    • @classicambo9781

LOL, I get it, I have the same when he keeps mentioning 'the Dutch method'.
Especially if you know that usually anything "dutch something" is generally not a very positive thing in the UK /english language (dutch courage: the false courage you only feel when drunk on alcohol etc.etc.). We have a long long history of interesting battles so it is understandable why it came to be part of the language (we both have some interesting, unflattering expressions regarding the French and Germans as well).
I think the Kansas method is really practical and based on keen observation, kind of what you would expect from your knack of the woods. :)

Highly recommend checking out Pete Ramey articles and videos for getting some good background on equine hoof trimming. Vets have very variable knowledge and often just recommend a 'master farrier' but especially with navicular horses the worst thing for an unhealthy hoof is often a metal shoe. Many other trimmers are frankly butchers on TH-cam as well. If I could find an equine vet with great equine podiatry knowledge and who knew what DSLD was, I would be forever on their books and they would get cake, coffee, wine etc every call out.

As someone that lives in Kansas I can understand why a trimmer would create a method centered around the pith because our climate is so dry most of the year. Definitely loads drier then in Scotland although we’re currently in a drought so it’s worse then usual. We finally got a decent amount of rain for the first time this year, but it came with tornados which I could do without.

I've been watching Ryan Hall on TH-cam. He does live streams when there is a chance for many tornadoes and stays in touch with storm chasers. Also he does education far in advance on what causes the storms that are coming, or when they aren't. He is way better than a TV weather report. His chasers can tell you where the tornadoes are touching down - or in winter, he'd tell us when it was time to buy milk and bread.

You will eventually get a big piece of hoof in your eye and from then on you will wear safety glasses. I just hope it doesn't do major damage to your eye.
I've noticed that farmers in general, and Europeans in particular don't take safety very seriously. We Americans have possibly gone too far in the other direction. The last company I worked for had a policy that we always had to wear safety glasses in "the lab." I was a software engineer and the lab I worked in had nothing but computers. I asked them if they were afraid that we would get data bits in our eyes. :)

Having had an eye injury at work I always notice when other people wear or don't wear eye protection. The flip down visor is probably the best choice for this job, but it wouldn't hurt to invest in some safety glasses that can hang out in the tool cubbies in both crushes. There are several brands out there that have a light mirror tint that are great in lower light situations and very comfortable. Buy a case, put a dozen in each crush, replace as needed. That way you have back up if something happens to the visors. Also available in sizes that would fit the kids so they could get in closer to learn the trade!

The Hoof GP has really brought something no one really thinks about when it comes to raising cattle, and I love it.
You have so many “animal rights activists” that say we need to leave these animals alone, and it just shows that they can’t be left alone. They need to be cared for or they’d die horrible, preventable deaths.
The Hoof GP shines such an important light on ignorance and I’m, honestly, so thankful for him, his work, and others who do this stuff. No fame, no commissions, no bonuses. Just pure care and love for animals

Hello, Have you ever had a rotten infected hoof that smelt bad or was bad enough to make you gag or throw up? I am very impressed with your stomach for this. I somehow can smell this environment you are in. I used to go with my dad, a tire repairman to an animal rendering plant. The smell is not to be forgotten ever in one's life. Good job enjoy the videos
