    Hi Zulie, thank you again for this video. This is a very good recap of the changes. I agree that everyone needs to take a more strategic approach to writing, especially targeted topics like "cats" or other subjects. There are too many writers on Medium, so you really have to capture the attention of readers. I also agree that the new plans will help to weed out the "quick buck" writers who are not committed to writing and publishing long-term and are seeking "easy" money on Medium.

    Hey Zuille, Thanks for you're straight-to-the-point tips on writing on Medium, it's been really helpful. I'm a middle-aged woman in Australia and a couple of years ago I decided to go to university to study writing like I'd always wanted to do. On my midyear break this year, I dedicated myself to developing a profile on Medium. My writing has improved so much from a combination of uni and Medium that now I've had a couple of pieces published in mainstream media. What I've realised, is that my Medium profile has acted as a folio of my work that editors can look at before they dismiss my pitches. I'm thrilled because it's been a lifelong dream to have my work read and the number of people that slide into my dm's to thank me for writing is so heartwarming. Anyway, I wanted to ask you if there is a way of publishing my work that appears elsewhere on Medium? I'm so time poor at the moment that I'm struggling to keep up with writing Medium stories, but I really can't afford to neglect it as I'm just starting out. If you read this far thanks and have a lovely weekend. x

    Thanks for the update. I have written a few articles and published them. Some had a reader or two. With these changes, I see that the platform is probably not interested in writers such as me. I am quite a bit older than probably most of the writers and reader, and write things that are more on the academic and research side, since that is my background. Most of the articles I find on Medium are more what I would call fluff, not to be offensive. I have removed all of my mostly unread articles and cancelled my membership. Hoping to find a more suitable outlet for my work.

      I always believe there is a side for everything. Have you tried connecting a personal blog to your writing? Kind of how tumblr has communities that it targets, you can honor the blog to what you do & attract followers from different these sites to your Medium. Possibly a way to engage I think.

    Been waiting dir this video :) thanks Zulie.
    About the referral: I’m torn on this. If half of the fee goes to the referrer that means that only the other half is left to “pay” for reads right? You know what I mean. So the referee essentially is earning other writers less money with their reads. So, basically the more referrals the less earning per reads…

    • @sandrapawula4075
      @sandrapawula4075 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would be true of the number of Medium readers stayed the same. But if it grows, which is the point of this, the big pot grows too.

    • @ytfactually
      @ytfactually 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sandrapawula4075 theoretically yea I agree. If memberships went up that might be true. But I actually think memberships might stay or even decline. Why? Because of the new entry requirements with 100 followers, $10 minimum withdrawal. I suspect many members are actually writers who earn $5 fee. Now they have to wait til they meet the requirements to earn. I don’t think they will pay for the membership in this case.

    • @ZulieWrites
      @ZulieWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tricky to predict how it will affect the memberships. But I don't necessarily think they will decline because a) more people will sign up with more referrals, and b) new writers will still become members to read other articles, or maybe they got referred themselves.
      Only time will show, but I'm curious to see how it plays out!

    • @ytfactually
      @ytfactually 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZulieWrites I hope it will work out great. I think Medium should also give a discount when someone signs up via a referral, that would give even more incentive to join via these links. Like 1 month for free.

    Hi Zulie, Great video again with some great tips. You mention that you will start self-publishing more and not in publications. My question is, I have my own "Publication" and every post I post is in there. With self-publishing, does it mean that you just publish an item or can you also place it in your own publication?
    Looking forward to your next tips.

    • @ZulieWrites
      @ZulieWrites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By self-publishing, I meant just publishing a piece on my profile. This is the only way to target your internal Medium email list and get those who haven't subscribed yet to subscribe.

  • @TheRealCoppelia
    @TheRealCoppelia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm not sure that these changes are as positive as all that. I have been holding off on starting as a writer on Medium, as I wanted to work on having several stories in the vault before going live with my profile. Now that these changes have happened moments before I'm ready to start publishing, I am already feeling demotivated. For new writers, I'm sure that seeing financial rewards in the beginning, no matter how tiny, could do a lot for motivation... whereas labouring in vain, for an undetermined period of time, certainly does not. I feel like I should keep my most important stories off the Medium platform (and still in the vault, so to speak) until after I am accepted to the partner program... even though that may be counterproductive to getting accepted in the first place. I also see the cut in incentive for new writers, at the same time as rewarding referrals, to have the potential to reduce the quality of writing. It puts the emphasis on evangelism for Medium memberships over attracting writers.

      That's weird. Did you make sure you clicked on the profile tab when searching for your name? But people will mostly find your article through the algorithm. That's why it's crucial to submit to publications and aim for curation if you don't have a big following yet.

    The only "beef" I have with this "100" followers requirement is...well, basically you're going to working for free for potentially several weeks to months. I will have to put in hours of content and write numerous articles of which Medium will benefit from at no cost. Am I wrong about my thought? Otherwise, I like the concept.

    • @ZulieWrites
      @ZulieWrites  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, that's true. You'll have to do some work for "free" which is why it's crucial to find writing topics you actually enjoy writing about. The good news: you can monetize your already published articles as soon as you get accepted into the partner program. So not all work is completely in vain.

      I can't give any specific advice on this because this depends on you! The most important thing is that you write about what you love before forcing yourself into a niche.
