I live in Europe, we appreciate our belongings,trying to use them as long as they last or not get horribly outdated, and it feels horrible when I see this and similar posts from the US. Please dont take it personally and you are not the only one but whoever reads this, please dont do this, things can be cleaned, not everything is a single use item, somewhere somebody used resources from the Earth incl energy to manufacture them and then they become non decomposing items contributing to huge landfills.
@@selyemperzsa1 this for sure. things can be cleaned, and if not (depending on what you're talking about) you can buy one that CAN be cleaned when you inevitably have to replace it. in the end it's all a capitalistic manipulative ploy to make you think you're saving money on cute but cheap throwaway stuff, even though the investment in reusable and durable items you actually use and want to keep is so much better. this is also why I'm learning to sew; a rip in a still perfectly good and thick sweater shouldn't mean it's "ruined".
1) teasing brush for hair removal. also, take 10 seconds to remove hair whenever you brush your hair. 2) soak in hot water with some cleanser (shampoo/cleansing shampoo/dish soap) then stir. brushes face down. you can add in clips, combs, etc. 3) if you use mason pearson, gfy 4) after a few minutes of soaking, dump the water out. rinse brushes with hot water 5) scrubba time. toothbrush is okay but not great. denture brush to remove gunk. (for wooden brushes. warm up your shoulder, and toss it in the trash.) 7) rat tail comb or something sharp to take clumps out. 8) ideally clean every two weeks. once a month at least. soak, forget about it, come back and scrub.
Oh come on Be fair on #3. I’ve got thin hair and I’m trying to save it so I forked over the cash for a good brush. And I want it to be clean too. Wasn’t trying to make a social superior story here🙁
I used dish soap, because I have a bar shampoo that has oils, maybe that would not be good? And I used an unused nailbrush, it's a bit too soft but seems to have worked okay.
@janetcarbone4213 just joking Janet. In the video he does say that anyone with a Pearson should have their butler clean it. I know how tough hair can be. If it works for you, I’m happy.
I have a 'clean brush' and a 'dirty brush' for this reason. I use the dirty brush for making sure my hair is free of tangles before I get in the shower to wash my hair. My wet brush is for use on my clean, damp hair and occasional detangling once styled. I noticed it helps to keep my hair from getting too oily between washes.
I wasn’t aware that i do the same as you. My dirty brush is a tangle teaser. Occasionally I take it with me to the shower and clean it with the shampoo on my head.
I do this but with my shower cap. A shower cap for when my hair is getting dirty and one for when my hair is clean. I only have one brush but i wash it when I wash my hair.
I am 51 year old and always cleaned the hair out of my brushes but nobody told me to wash them. My brushes would get so gross even after hair removed. I asked my hair dresser why my brush looked so gross recently. She told me I need to wash my brush that it was dead skin in it. I am so grossed out why was I not told/taught to do this. Its a game changer. thank you for all your videos I have learned so many new (to me) ways of taking care of my hair. I am so into it now I am starting to have hair dreams lol. I came across your TH-cam channel yesterday and now I am glued to it. Last night I gathered all my hairbrushes and accessories and left them in the sink overnight with some washing up liquid and OMG, this morning I went to look at the result. The colour of the water had changed to an oily colour. I couldn’t believe I was brushing my clear hair with old oil on the brush as well as the bacteria that had built up. Now like you, I am cleaning them at the start of each month. Thank you, Chris you now have a new fan.
Dude... this is a life saver! I've had that white, lint-looking buildup in my brushes all along and did not know what to do. I got one of those "easy to clean" brushes that pull the back out so you could take the hair off, thinking that would work if I did it every time. When the buildup came back, I would just try to pick it off, but it would just take so long and it was difficult. Thanks so much! I had NO idea you had to clean your brushes this thoroughly!
Me either, my method of cleaning my hair brush was to just pull all the hair out in a clump and throw it away 😂 I had no idea that actually washing the brush would reduce so much of my hair feeling dirty all the time but it makes sense, it just never occurred to me
I actually found conditioner super helpful to release the builduo from the bristles, and then going in with soap. First, wet the brush (after taking out the hair), then apply a small amount of conditioner and try to get all the lint that is collected like rings on the bristles, wait a minute, take an old toothbrush or something and start cleaning. Comes off much more easily than with just soap 😅
My mother never taught me this and when I told her growing up that I thought brushing my hair made it more greasy I was told I was crazy… anyway I’m going to tell her this… we own like 8 hairbrushes but I don’t think we’ve ever cleaned them with shampoo+hot water-or At least I’ve never seen her do it either. Wow, I very much hope that you use different brushes. Every hair and scalp have got their own microflora. Only by washing your brushes and combs every time you'd be able to use them commnaly without harming it.
My mom also never taught me this either. I remember using this brush for years and never cleaned it. It was dirty and I wanted a new one when I noticed but mom would say I don’t need another one.
My mother told me to clean all my brush and combs, clips, etc. Everytime you wash your hair. I have been doing this exact same thing, using a toothbrush, since I started living alone (she used to do it for me before). I have healthy hair all bc of my mom, and as does she. She also taught me how to properly detangle and comb. Thank you mumma.
For my education, may I ask, does this apply to nice metal clips too? I try to throw my scrunchies hair bands and hair ties in a mesh baggy for the washer, and most of , my clips are plastic. But what about the metal/fancy ones? I love the idea of cleaning them in the shower because it will be so much easier to maintain regularly

I use different products from what he suggested but good alternatives (not Pantene pro v and other junk). My hair is happier too and shinier and cleaner! So the routine is really great

This morning I literally noticed the little balls of gunk at the base of the bristles on my "other brush" (the one I hardly ever use and hardly ever clean) and I tried to clean it.... The Eye of Google is at it again.
Wonderful! I have only one (important!) thing to add: ALWAYS dry brushes with bristles pointing down. Or water will tend get stuck inside them for too long, and then you get nasty bacteria growth ...
I'd mention that bristles down only drains the water; after about half a day you need to turn you brush right side up so it can actually air-dry fully. Trust me, I do this every time I wash my hair, having a wet brush is the biggest peeve, there's no way to dry it faster, you just have to drain it well (*hours*) then turn it to dry.
Stupid tiny hole in a massive cushion. The design of those is so fucking stupid. I like the ones that are just one solid plastic piece, avoid that problem

Instead of a bowl, I would recommend a wash basin like you get during a hospital stay. They’re usually a short rectangular shape & a decent depth, perfect for brushes! Check with older family & friends that are frequent flyers for hospital stays, they’re likely to have a stack of them! I’ve donated tons of them to local thrift stores.
Yup. Dish pan from the dollar store. I have 2 in the kitchen, 1 for cleaning hair brush/hair dying tools, 1 for makeup brushes and 1 for cleaning my nail implements. I buy them about 10 at a time and always keep extras in my pantry. So useful!

Hey Prof! I did an experiment, and you're totally right about finding your hair soul mate! I tried the medium hair routine and pretty quickly realized it wasn't me... itchy scalp, lots of flyaways. So then I switched to the coarse hair routine, and WHOA. Frizz went down, flyaways went down, color looks better, and my hair soaked up all that moisture and doesn't feel greasy. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
All this time I've been concerned about the weird gunk that stays on my brush after getting hair off it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about how to get it off and have a clean brush! Now the only thing stopping me from having a clean brush is the fact that I need to get myself one of those awesome toothbrushes. 😂
@@naughtep97 I find that the weird gunk changes colours to match whatever brightly coloured towel I use to dry my hair. So I guess it's a mixture of oil, scalp flakes, dust, product and towel fibres.
An old regular toothbrush works fine. Also whatever you use to get hair off the brush (this mainly depends from brush to brush, not toll to tool) is fine as well. I wash my hairbrush every time I wash my hair, while I am waiting for the hair conditioner (or mask) to work; it's in the tub getting wet and shampoo-y while I wash my hair, then I go in with an old toothbrush with hand soap (because it's hard to get a small amount of shampoo on a toothbrush, lets be honest here), scrub it thoroughly, then rince very well. The biggest issue isn't the cleaning, it's the drying. Face down half a day so that excess water can drain, then at least overnight to dry turned right side up. I dunno what brushes this dude has that actually drain right side up, mine never do. I can literally slush water around if I leave them right side up right away even 24h later.
I am 72 years old and I learned to clean my combs and hairbrushes from my father when I was young by soaking them in hot water with a tablespoon or two of ammonia. Works like magic and takes only a few minutes. I also remove the hair after every time I blow dry.
Chris I'm just so appreciative of this channel. I started using the recommended products you provided (leave in conditioner is a GAME CHANGER) and my hair has never looked this healthy in my life. I look forward to more videos!!

I have very thick waist length hair and I purchased the Moroccanoil shampoo January 14th and I still have 2-4 washes left! $26 dollars seems like a lot, but not if you don’t buy shampoo again for 10 months ❤❤❤

I’ve always washed my brushes every time I wash my hair. I just take them in the shower with me. I will definitely start to soak in hot water first and buy a denture brush instead of a toothbrush. Love your Chanel, you have helped my hair so much over the last few months
My grandma has the nastiest most hair filled hairbrush I’ve ever seen, to the point that she had trouble getting traction with the bristles because of the amount of hair in it. We finally got her to replace it and she complained about how she has to ‘break it in’ lmao
Great video!❤️ Here’s the cleaning recipe I use for hair and makeup brushes (amazing!!): 1 cup warm water 1 tbsp white vinegar 1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap-original blue kind. (Soak & work makeup out with fingers etc, then rinse with clean water and squeeze or shake excess water out, dry makeup brushes on towel overnight, ready to use in the morning! 💕)
I switched to a tangle teezer brand brush because it’s all solid plastic and doesn’t have the little beads on the ends of the bristles, so it’s SUPER easy to clean. Denman brushes are also great because you can take them apart. Never going back!
Simple trick for not getting water sprayed in your face when cleaning with a toothbrush or denture cleaner: just face the brush away from you (and into the bowl/sink). Turn it back over for spot cleaning and checking, but facing the brush down keeps the spray going down too.
Came here to say exactly this! As well as for drying....putting them upside down let's the water run out instead of sitting in the brush 'drying' right side up....
Ive been cleaning my hair tools now since I came across another video of yours. It makes so much difference, it also stops the burning smell when blow drying. But i basically include cleaning brushes as part of my hair care routine. Thanks for the top tip.
Thank you for this video! I was only removing the hair from the brush! Such a difference after following your instructions. I also used it on my blow dryer brush (it has removable brush heads for easy cleaning). Your instructions worked for that, too! I will no longer live with dirty brushes!
i’ve used the same brush for over a decade. previously, it was shared between my grandma, sister, and me. i’m glad i can clean it without worrying about messing it up after all this time
I never watch hair dressing videos as I'm not that big on hair styling etc but this basic advice popped up and I was curious. It sounds so obvious yet so needed! I just washed my brush and I decided to try my mother's comb and I screamed. She's had a comb for about 40 years and never washed it, so while she was out I cleaned it properly. I don't have a parting comb but an *old* nail file was able to get the grime out of a 40 year old comb very easily after it was soaked! The comb looks like new because the 80's hair product that's been amassing for decades was so thick it came down an inch into the brush. Everyone can rest easy knowing she's not brushing 40 years worth of grime into her hair anymore and I will wash my hair tomorrow and see if I see any different results in my own comb. Thanks!
@@klaudiawos94 I don’t soak them, I just use a really cheap clarifying shampoo and scrub them for a couple of mins. It’s very easy and cleans all of the oily stuff off very easy.

@@boushra08880 they're good (but probably not as good as boar bristle) brushes for adding oil to dry hair, IIRC. Though boar bristle brushes are also good for redistributing oil from your scalp to your ends. You still have to clean the wooden ones, 100% isopropyl alcohol is a good degreaser.
@@boushra08880It's probably nothing wrong with them, it's more that they're aren't that much better than plastic brushes, so there's no point in buying one bc you think it will be better for your hair. But if you want it bc you think plastic is bad or if you think it looks nice then you can always get one. But I think wooden brushes can be harder to clean, the wood will absorb moisture and oil which you can't really get rid of maybe.
Genuinely I felt like my brushes were the problem for my hair getting super oily faster than normal and I am so glad this video exists! I am definitely going to try this out!

The Mason Pearson is the best brush I've ever used. My husband bought me the Extra Large boar bristle over 20 years ago, and it's still going strong. It's completely possible to clean it. It just takes more effort than cheap plastic tools require. The difference is that it's handmade with natural biodegradable materials, unlike the pieces you've shown here. Nothing wrong with what you've shown or the tools you're using, but it's worth considering that all tools eventually reach an end of life. There is a reason I've never had to purchase another brush - with continued care, I may never have to. Regarding how to clean the Mason Pearson, which is celluloid acetate (biodegradable, technically cotton or tree pulp based), they come with their own cleaning brush to remove hair and debris. You can wet clean it, but you shouldn't submerge it because of the natural rubber pad. You can also purchase their hairbrush cleaner that has been developed to clean all bacteria on the brush and the pad, if you prefer, but it's not necessary. I dry and wet clean mine regularly.

Simple dishwashing liquid and warm water with the square nylon cleaning brush that comes with their boar brushes. They also have a new spray, but it's just a faster way to do it. Ultimately it's a decision about time management. My brush is still going strong, it's clean, and there's been no decay to the orange rubber pad.

Upper dish rack in your dishwasher works great, just clean out all the hair first - place them bristles side down and run them through. Dishwasher detergent will eat through the gunk collection at the bristle base. Don’t forget to wash your dishwashing brush too. Everything comes out shiny and clean.
I started watching your videos recently. Washed all my brushes since, changed my hair wash routine and ... today I received my Olaplex. So excited!!!!! My journey to beautiful hair has finally shifted into 5 gear. Holding my fingers crossed 🤞🏼
A couple of months ago I just googled “how to clean a hairbrush”. It gave very helpful steps and I’ve been following it ever since. First I take out all the hair from my brush/comb with my fingers. My brush has spaced out bristles and I don’t shed a lot so it’s easy. Next I pour some shampoo into a container and mix with warm water and swirl my brush/comb in the soapy water. After that it usually looks “clean” but to be sure I dab a (separate) toothbrush in some baking soda and scrub in between all the bristles. Lastly I rinse and dip the brush/comb into a solution of water and rubbing alcohol (I only do this step once a month). Then I lay it out to dry in my window sill under a small towel. For some reason my hair collects a lot of lint so I recently added lint cleaning to that list too. It’s very tedious to pick it all out but worth it to have a fresh and clean brush. I also wash my hair elastics (without the alcohol) and my large scrunchi’s I just throw in the washing machine with my clothes. Before this revelation I’m ashamed to admit I only cleaned the hair out my brush and that was it. Now I try to wash my hair tools and accessories at least once a week when I do my hair or until my next wash day (every two weeks). Our hair gets very dirty from a variety of factors so it makes sense to clean our hair tools like we clean anything else that we use constantly that gets dirty.

Yep. It’s the brushes that slather the oil back where it came from. Ick! I have a few brushes and clean them all on the same day so I have a clean one when I need it. I do makeup brushes that day as well. This channel is awesome!
Thanks for the advice. I started cleaning my brushes monthly because if I don't, I start itching. That's quite the reminder. Although I usually just scrub them (using a boar bristle brush) under running water with some hand soap, without any pre-soak. That method works well for wooden brushes, actually. Unless you have some really gnarly gunk buildup, the difficult part is really just getting in between the bristles, imo.
I’ve been grimacing at the state of my hair brush recently (I clear the hair after every use but it’s the other residue…), avoiding it because I thought I would have to scrub forever. This is a great lazy person method! Thank you!!!
Dollar tree has a bristle cleaner similar to the denture cleaner not quite as dense in bristles. Works well. I use a mixture of half dawn and vinegar, i use the same mixture for my makeup brushes too. Love you Chris
Thanks for this Chris. I love your recommended wet brush but it collects hair and stuff on the base quickly. I got a Landot blow dry brush that came with a small brush tool to remove hair on the barrel. Works great on the wet brush too. Thanks for making my hair look great! Hi Christina 👋
It does! I switched to the wet brush recently and noticed lint collects on the base of each strand. Thankfully they're easy to wash, especially the ones for fine hair
Q: But most brushes have that little bead of plastic on the tip of the bristle ( to protect the bristle from tearing the hair or scratching your scalp and in some cases to even massage the scalp) That bead prevents you from sliding or lifting off those little ringlets of lint that gets wrapped around the bristles!! The lint will slide up the bristle shaft and get stuck at the bead which is fatter than the twist of lint , UGH! I have to painstakingly pick that bit of lint off every single bristle one at a time every time I clean my brush. Everyone has it. You showed it on the close up of your black oval brush. Is there any way to clean the lint off faster? The more aggressive I get the more likely I can break that bead off ruining the whole reason for having the beads in the first place or sometimes in breaking off that bead it leaves behind a sharp ragged piece of the bead plastic on the bristle and I have to pick that off carefully so I don't get scratched when using it.
Same question. Bought a really bad wet brush like a year ago. I've had to cut off all of those beadless bristles because they scratch my scalp so bad. At this point, most of the bristles are gone.
I just put my brush under hot water for a minute and run my fingers along the length of the brush every time after brushing my hair. It takes care of the most of those lint rings around the bristles. And then I wash the brush more thoroughly like he does in the video when I wash my hair. They get stuck when they allow to build up but they disolve easily when you don’t let the dirt stack. Source: my hair is butt length, oily, wavy and thick, just one brushing forms lint around every single brisle because there is so much hair area it collects it from.

I went from washing my hair 3 times a week to once a week 😌 I have really fine hair and always struggles with hair growth and that flat oily hair look 😢… but I found my hair soulmate now thanks to your help and advise. This was so helpful to finally know how to get all of that icky stuff off of the little plastic bristles!!! I have been spending way too much time every few days meticulously picking it out with my hands while wearing rubber gloves! (horrible, I know). Now, I will happily have much cleaner brushes and more time!! So a big thank you for all of the fabulous advice!!
This was a good video! Thanks. Lately, I've been using Dawn Powerwash for my hairbrush. (It has soap and alcohol in it) I spray it all over the brush. Leave it on for about 1/2 hour. Then I fill up a bowl with really hot water and let the brush with DP sit overnight. Then I rinse and brush the brush so it is squeaky clean. I have found that it is really important to change my pillowcases frequently like sometimes I'll change them every 2 nights. I'll have to try one of those denture brushes. Thanks for the tip.
The Mason-Pearson brushes come with their own butler-brush-cleaning brush. I keep that little black plastic brush in my shower and use it on all my brushes. I squirt some dish soap on my hairbrush and wash it every time I wash my hair. Works great!
I lost my Mason-Pearson brush when I moved, and I’m sure as soon as I buy a new one, the old one will reappear. I mean, they last forever, so it’s not like you need two. Mine didn’t come with a brush-cleaning-brush, though, and that sounds really useful.
@@janetmckenzie146 i think you can totally justify the purchase. It’s always great to have a spare hairbrush, or have a clean one on hand if you can’t be bothered to wash them two times a week. I also think the brush-cleaning-brush is very very useful. 😁
I thought about that too until I realized that the water gets in thru the bristles so it evaporates thru them too. I live in AZ so I sit the brush outside. It's bone dry in 30 minutes tops.
If the water happens to sit there a while - mold or something similar begins to grow between the back and the cushion of the brush. It's important but extremely difficult to ensure all the water is out, which is why if I go with a paddle brush like that - it would have to have holes in the back to help drain the water out if I would ever wash it with water... On the other hand, a Denman style brush is super easy to clean with a toothbrush when every other row is taken out to make brushing and cleaning a pretty quick task.
That's hilarious, I've been cleaning my brushes with shampoo set/teasing brushes since cosmetology school in '95.. nobody ever taught me that, so I'm STOKED that I've been doing it right all along! My 20+ year old Mason Pearson brushes came with a rectangular cleaning brush to get the hair out of the bristles. It works well on all of my brushes. I was gifted the first MP brush for my daughter’s fine, straight, tangle prone hair. I purchased another two MP brushes a year or two later. I paid about $100 for each brush then. Recently, I had looked up the brushes and was shocked to see the steep price increase. They were pricey 20 years ago, but today’s price is even crazier. I guess they raise them $10 a year. They definitely last because I still have and use all of mine. I will admit, I do tend to use my Wet brushes over MP, but they only last a couple of years and need to be replaced. If you have a MP for years, or decades, you might be able to justify its cost!

Great tips! I usually soak my brushes before I wash my hair, then after I’ve applied shampoo & am letting conditioner/hair mask soak in I step out of shower, grab my brushes, and clean them with a toothbrush in the shower that way it’s clean when I need to use it to blow dry my hair!
Yes, I would like to know as well. I typically clean it after every use, I’ll rake out the hair then take my wash cloth and scrub it with that to try and get the bristles clean as possible.
Yes please! Omg my blow dry brush is honestly disgusting despite getting all the hair out every time I use it 😂. The product buildup from using blow dry balms and smoothers I swear is impossible to get out.

Love these tips for cleaning your brushes. Any tips for cleaning my blow dry brush? I usually just remove the hair from the barrel but I wonder if there is any way to clean the base of the brush. Obviously you can't soak it in water, but maybe there is a way to clean it. I bet product accumulates over time.
The denture cleaners seem like a game changer! Thanks, Chris! May I throw out there an idea for another video: because I have bleached hair, I always use both conditioner and a hair mask afterwards. But I've heard things like if you put conditioner first then you're preventing the hair mask to really get into your hair and do its thing. Or that it doesn't really matter and conditioner is an unnecessary extra step because it's not going to do anything the hair mask can't do (and better). And every time I wash my hair, and I ask myself the same question, I think: "Chris probably has the answer and will surely have the best advice so I stop dumping my money down the drain". So I'm crossing my fingers you read this comment and clear up this conundrum (eventually). Thanks again!
I have been wondering the exact same thing! I haven't found any solid resources, but I remember hearing someone say that conditioner is meant to close the hair cuticle to help it retain moisture - so I have been using masks before conditioner. Now that I have taken the time to type this out, it seems like a mask would be sufficient on its own, so I'll go that route and see if I notice any difference from what I've been doing. I was just excited someone had the same question I did!
My lazy technique is I brush my hair lengths while the shampoo is sitting in them. I barely use any hair products so I consider it to be a decent method. Ofc I do this gently and I start detangling from the ends. And, of course, I don't use my brushes on anyone else than myself (I am no hairdresser). Crazy entertaining and useful anyway 👍 Thank you ❤
I just want to tell you, one of your videos saved my hair. I’ve had this ONE GIANT oily spot in the back of my head for so long and I was convinced that my water pressure wasn’t good enough to get all of the shampoo out. So I would never use much at all and I’d water it down. As soon as I actually washed my hair correctly with a decent amount of shampoo I was like omg. This is it? That’s all I had to do?! I actually felt kinda stupid I don’t know why I didn’t think to do that LOL I’ve never been taught how to correctly wash my hair. Thank you!

I have been waiting for someone to make a video like this for so, so, so long. Thank you for finally confirming that my crazy tactics of continuing to clean my brush after every use is legit ❤
I have a slightly different method. After cleaning out all the hair, and as much of the white fuzzy stuff as possible, I spray the brush heavily with blue window cleaner, then scrub and rinse. No soaking. The cleaner dissolves the oil that holds the gunk on the brushes, and gets in between the bristles well.
Over 20 years ago I spent alot of $$$ on a mason Pierson brush. I ❤ it. I've taken care of it exactly like you've said. I do it every Sunday. Super fast! I soak my brush/comb while in the shower.

I like to take my brushes, et al, in the shower each week when I wash my hair; except for my hair equipment I use cheap clarifying shampoo (would never use on my hair) that I keep to remove grease stains out of clothing & clean combs, brushes, etc.
Mason Pearson brushes come with their own little cleaner brush to get hair out first, and you use luke warm water with mild detergent with a little bit of baking soda, but get it like a bubble bath for your brush(that you will not be soaking the brush in). My mother always had Mason Pearson and she always used tearless Baby Shampoo for the cleanser with the baking soda, you dip the bristles only in the soap foam and gently use the cleaner brush to scrubby dub it, but hold it so the water can't get in the little air hole at the top of the pad. I have a little rack thing I built that lets the brush be face down but not on the bristles so it can drip dry.

Thank you for this video! My wet brush gets those white fuzz balls and I thought it was just me! I can’t tell if it’s lint from the towel or dust or my gray strands. Drives me crazy. I clean it out by hand frequently because I don’t want white lint balls in my dark hair. Good to know other people have the same issue. I’m guilty of using a toothbrush on the hair brush. 😊
I did this exact thing and, my oh my did it work wonders! I have no hair (bald) but a healthy beard. Before when I've taken a shower and I brush my beard it do not take 30 minutes before I feel it becoming oily. Now, after the "brushcleanse", it stays soft and smooth for days! Finally, I’ve been doing something right. But I find it satisfying to use the sprayer in the shower, put it down on the floor while it’s still soapy, hold it still with my foot and blast it with the highest setting. I have been doing this for probably 20 years, even with a vintage Avon brush and it works really well.

I live in Europe, we appreciate our belongings,trying to use them as long as they last or not get horribly outdated, and it feels horrible when I see this and similar posts from the US. Please dont take it personally and you are not the only one but whoever reads this, please dont do this, things can be cleaned, not everything is a single use item, somewhere somebody used resources from the Earth incl energy to manufacture them and then they become non decomposing items contributing to huge landfills.
@@selyemperzsa1 this for sure. things can be cleaned, and if not (depending on what you're talking about) you can buy one that CAN be cleaned when you inevitably have to replace it. in the end it's all a capitalistic manipulative ploy to make you think you're saving money on cute but cheap throwaway stuff, even though the investment in reusable and durable items you actually use and want to keep is so much better. this is also why I'm learning to sew; a rip in a still perfectly good and thick sweater shouldn't mean it's "ruined".
1) teasing brush for hair removal. also, take 10 seconds to remove hair whenever you brush your hair.
2) soak in hot water with some cleanser (shampoo/cleansing shampoo/dish soap) then stir. brushes face down. you can add in clips, combs, etc.
3) if you use mason pearson, gfy
4) after a few minutes of soaking, dump the water out. rinse brushes with hot water
5) scrubba time. toothbrush is okay but not great. denture brush to remove gunk. (for wooden brushes. warm up your shoulder, and toss it in the trash.)
7) rat tail comb or something sharp to take clumps out.
8) ideally clean every two weeks. once a month at least. soak, forget about it, come back and scrub.
I use shampoo and just let it soak with no bowl and let it get all over the brush then rinse it

I used dish soap, because I have a bar shampoo that has oils, maybe that would not be good? And I used an unused nailbrush, it's a bit too soft but seems to have worked okay.

I have a 'clean brush' and a 'dirty brush' for this reason. I use the dirty brush for making sure my hair is free of tangles before I get in the shower to wash my hair. My wet brush is for use on my clean, damp hair and occasional detangling once styled. I noticed it helps to keep my hair from getting too oily between washes.
I wasn’t aware that i do the same as you. My dirty brush is a tangle teaser. Occasionally I take it with me to the shower and clean it with the shampoo on my head.
I do the same. Wet brush as my clean one and a tangle teezer as my dirty hair one 😊
I do this but with my shower cap. A shower cap for when my hair is getting dirty and one for when my hair is clean. I only have one brush but i wash it when I wash my hair.

I am 51 year old and always cleaned the hair out of my brushes but nobody told me to wash them. My brushes would get so gross even after hair removed. I asked my hair dresser why my brush looked so gross recently. She told me I need to wash my brush that it was dead skin in it. I am so grossed out why was I not told/taught to do this. I came across your TH-cam channel yesterday and now I am glued to it. Last night I gathered all my hairbrushes and accessories and left them in the sink overnight with some washing up liquid and OMG, this morning I went to look at the result. The colour of the water had changed to an oily colour. I couldn’t believe I was brushing my clear hair with old oil on the brush as well as the bacteria that had built up. Now like you, I am cleaning them at the start of each month. Thank you, Chris you now have a new fan.
Dude... this is a life saver! I've had that white, lint-looking buildup in my brushes all along and did not know what to do. I got one of those "easy to clean" brushes that pull the back out so you could take the hair off, thinking that would work if I did it every time. When the buildup came back, I would just try to pick it off, but it would just take so long and it was difficult. Thanks so much! I had NO idea you had to clean your brushes this thoroughly!
Me either, my method of cleaning my hair brush was to just pull all the hair out in a clump and throw it away 😂 I had no idea that actually washing the brush would reduce so much of my hair feeling dirty all the time but it makes sense, it just never occurred to me
I actually found conditioner super helpful to release the builduo from the bristles, and then going in with soap. First, wet the brush (after taking out the hair), then apply a small amount of conditioner and try to get all the lint that is collected like rings on the bristles, wait a minute, take an old toothbrush or something and start cleaning. Comes off much more easily than with just soap 😅
My mother never taught me this and when I told her growing up that I thought brushing my hair made it more greasy I was told I was crazy… anyway I’m going to tell her this… we own like 8 hairbrushes but I don’t think we’ve ever cleaned them with shampoo+hot water-or At least I’ve never seen her do it either. Wow, I very much hope that you use different brushes. Every hair and scalp have got their own microflora. Only by washing your brushes and combs every time you'd be able to use them commnaly without harming it.

My mother told me to clean all my brush and combs, clips, etc. Everytime you wash your hair. I have been doing this exact same thing, using a toothbrush, since I started living alone (she used to do it for me before). I have healthy hair all bc of my mom, and as does she. She also taught me how to properly detangle and comb. Thank you mumma.
For my education, may I ask, does this apply to nice metal clips too? I try to throw my scrunchies hair bands and hair ties in a mesh baggy for the washer, and most of , my clips are plastic. But what about the metal/fancy ones? I love the idea of cleaning them in the shower because it will be so much easier to maintain regularly

I use different products from what he suggested but good alternatives (not Pantene pro v and other junk).

Wonderful! I have only one (important!) thing to add: ALWAYS dry brushes with bristles pointing down. Or water will tend get stuck inside them for too long, and then you get nasty bacteria growth ...
YES! Soak and dry with bristles pointed down to help prevent mold/bacteria growth in the gaps between the bristles and the body of the brush.
I'd mention that bristles down only drains the water; after about half a day you need to turn you brush right side up so it can actually air-dry fully. Trust me, I do this every time I wash my hair, having a wet brush is the biggest peeve, there's no way to dry it faster, you just have to drain it well (*hours*) then turn it to dry.
Stupid tiny hole in a massive cushion. The design of those is so fucking stupid. I like the ones that are just one solid plastic piece, avoid that problem
Best routine I've found yet. Got my brushes spotlessly clean in less than 20 minutes.

Instead of a bowl, I would recommend a wash basin like you get during a hospital stay. They’re usually a short rectangular shape & a decent depth, perfect for brushes! Check with older family & friends that are frequent flyers for hospital stays, they’re likely to have a stack of them! I’ve donated tons of them to local thrift stores.

Yup. Dish pan from the dollar store. I have 2 in the kitchen, 1 for cleaning hair brush/hair dying tools, 1 for makeup brushes and 1 for cleaning my nail implements. I buy them about 10 at a time and always keep extras in my pantry. So useful!

I tried the medium hair routine and pretty quickly realized it wasn't me... itchy scalp, lots of flyaways. So then I switched to the coarse hair routine, and WHOA. Frizz went down, flyaways went down, color looks better, and my hair soaked up all that moisture and doesn't feel greasy. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
All this time I've been concerned about the weird gunk that stays on my brush after getting hair off it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about how to get it off and have a clean brush! Now the only thing stopping me from having a clean brush is the fact that I need to get myself one of those awesome toothbrushes. 😂

@@naughtep97 I find that the weird gunk changes colours to match whatever brightly coloured towel I use to dry my hair. So I guess it's a mixture of oil, scalp flakes, dust, product and towel fibres.
An old regular toothbrush works fine. Also whatever you use to get hair off the brush (this mainly depends from brush to brush, not toll to tool) is fine as well. I wash my hairbrush every time I wash my hair, while I am waiting for the hair conditioner (or mask) to work; it's in the tub getting wet and shampoo-y while I wash my hair, then I go in with an old toothbrush with hand soap (because it's hard to get a small amount of shampoo on a toothbrush, lets be honest here), scrub it thoroughly, then rince very well. The biggest issue isn't the cleaning, it's the drying. Face down half a day so that excess water can drain, then at least overnight to dry turned right side up. I dunno what brushes this dude has that actually drain right side up, mine never do. I can literally slush water around if I leave them right side up right away even 24h later.

I am 72 years old and I learned to clean my combs and hairbrushes from my father when I was young by soaking them in hot water with a tablespoon or two of ammonia. Works like magic and takes only a few minutes. I also remove the hair after every time I blow dry.

My grandma has the nastiest most hair filled hairbrush I’ve ever seen, to the point that she had trouble getting traction with the bristles because of the amount of hair in it. We finally got her to replace it and she complained about how she has to ‘break it in’ lmao

Great video!❤️ Here’s the cleaning recipe I use for hair and makeup brushes (amazing!!):
1 cup warm water
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap-original blue kind.
(Soak & work makeup out with fingers etc, then rinse with clean water and squeeze or shake excess water out, dry makeup brushes on towel overnight, ready to use in the morning! 💕)
I switched to a tangle teezer brand brush because it’s all solid plastic and doesn’t have the little beads on the ends of the bristles, so it’s SUPER easy to clean. Denman brushes are also great because you can take them apart. Never going back!
Simple trick for not getting water sprayed in your face when cleaning with a toothbrush or denture cleaner: just face the brush away from you (and into the bowl/sink). Turn it back over for spot cleaning and checking, but facing the brush down keeps the spray going down too.
Came here to say exactly this! As well as for drying....putting them upside down let's the water run out instead of sitting in the brush 'drying' right side up....
Ive been cleaning my hair tools now since I came across another video of yours. It makes so much difference, it also stops the burning smell when blow drying. But i basically include cleaning brushes as part of my hair care routine. Thanks for the top tip.
Thank you for this video! I was only removing the hair from the brush! Such a difference after following your instructions. I also used it on my blow dryer brush (it has removable brush heads for easy cleaning). Your instructions worked for that, too! I will no longer live with dirty brushes!
i’ve used the same brush for over a decade. previously, it was shared between my grandma, sister, and me. i’m glad i can clean it without worrying about messing it up after all this time
I never watch hair dressing videos as I'm not that big on hair styling etc but this basic advice popped up and I was curious. It sounds so obvious yet so needed! I just washed my brush and I decided to try my mother's comb and I screamed. She's had a comb for about 40 years and never washed it, so while she was out I cleaned it properly. I don't have a parting comb but an *old* nail file was able to get the grime out of a 40 year old comb very easily after it was soaked! The comb looks like new because the 80's hair product that's been amassing for decades was so thick it came down an inch into the brush.
Everyone can rest easy knowing she's not brushing 40 years worth of grime into her hair anymore and I will wash my hair tomorrow and see if I see any different results in my own comb. Thanks!
I just use a clarifying shampoo and a tease brush to scrub them in the shower, it takes like 5 mins and you don’t have to worry about the splatters 🙂

@@boushra08880 they're good (but probably not as good as boar bristle) brushes for adding oil to dry hair, IIRC. Though boar bristle brushes are also good for redistributing oil from your scalp to your ends. You still have to clean the wooden ones, 100% isopropyl alcohol is a good degreaser.
@@boushra08880It's probably nothing wrong with them, it's more that they're aren't that much better than plastic brushes, so there's no point in buying one bc you think it will be better for your hair. But if you want it bc you think plastic is bad or if you think it looks nice then you can always get one. But I think wooden brushes can be harder to clean, the wood will absorb moisture and oil which you can't really get rid of maybe.

The Mason Pearson is the best brush I've ever used. My husband bought me the Extra Large boar bristle over 20 years ago, and it's still going strong. It's completely possible to clean it. It just takes more effort than cheap plastic tools require. The difference is that it's handmade with natural biodegradable materials, unlike the pieces you've shown here. Nothing wrong with what you've shown or the tools you're using, but it's worth considering that all tools eventually reach an end of life. There is a reason I've never had to purchase another brush - with continued care, I may never have to. Regarding how to clean the Mason Pearson, which is celluloid acetate (biodegradable, technically cotton or tree pulp based), they come with their own cleaning brush to remove hair and debris. You can wet clean it, but you shouldn't submerge it because of the natural rubber pad. You can also purchase their hairbrush cleaner that has been developed to clean all bacteria on the brush and the pad, if you prefer, but it's not necessary. I dry and wet clean mine regularly.

Simple dishwashing liquid and warm water with the square nylon cleaning brush that comes with their boar brushes. They also have a new spray, but it's just a faster way to do it. Ultimately it's a decision about time management. My brush is still going strong, it's clean, and there's been no decay to the orange rubber pad.

Upper dish rack in your dishwasher works great, just clean out all the hair first - place them bristles side down and run them through. Dishwasher detergent will eat through the gunk collection at the bristle base. Don’t forget to wash your dishwashing brush too. Everything comes out shiny and clean.

I ADORE my Kent wooden, boar’s hair brush for scalp massage. You can’t soak it for a long time, but I DO wash it with conditioning shampoo
A couple of months ago I just googled “how to clean a hairbrush”. It gave very helpful steps and I’ve been following it ever since. First I take out all the hair from my brush/comb with my fingers. My brush has spaced out bristles and I don’t shed a lot so it’s easy. Next I pour some shampoo into a container and mix with warm water and swirl my brush/comb in the soapy water. After that it usually looks “clean” but to be sure I dab a (separate) toothbrush in some baking soda and scrub in between all the bristles. Lastly I rinse and dip the brush/comb into a solution of water and rubbing alcohol (I only do this step once a month). Then I lay it out to dry in my window sill under a small towel. For some reason my hair collects a lot of lint so I recently added lint cleaning to that list too. It’s very tedious to pick it all out but worth it to have a fresh and clean brush. I also wash my hair elastics (without the alcohol) and my large scrunchi’s I just throw in the washing machine with my clothes. Before this revelation I’m ashamed to admit I only cleaned the hair out my brush and that was it. Now I try to wash my hair tools and accessories at least once a week when I do my hair or until my next wash day (every two weeks). Our hair gets very dirty from a variety of factors so it makes sense to clean our hair tools like we clean anything else that we use constantly that gets dirty.

Thanks for the advice. I started cleaning my brushes monthly because if I don't, I start itching. That's quite the reminder. Although I usually just scrub them (using a boar bristle brush) under running water with some hand soap, without any pre-soak. That method works well for wooden brushes, actually. Unless you have some really gnarly gunk buildup, the difficult part is really just getting in between the bristles, imo.

Dollar tree has a bristle cleaner similar to the denture cleaner not quite as dense in bristles. Works well. I use a mixture of half dawn and vinegar, i use the same mixture for my makeup brushes too. Love you Chris

It does! I switched to the wet brush recently and noticed lint collects on the base of each strand. Thankfully they're easy to wash, especially the ones for fine hair
Q: But most brushes have that little bead of plastic on the tip of the bristle ( to protect the bristle from tearing the hair or scratching your scalp and in some cases to even massage the scalp) That bead prevents you from sliding or lifting off those little ringlets of lint that gets wrapped around the bristles!! The lint will slide up the bristle shaft and get stuck at the bead which is fatter than the twist of lint , UGH! I have to painstakingly pick that bit of lint off every single bristle one at a time every time I clean my brush. Everyone has it. You showed it on the close up of your black oval brush. Is there any way to clean the lint off faster? The more aggressive I get the more likely I can break that bead off ruining the whole reason for having the beads in the first place or sometimes in breaking off that bead it leaves behind a sharp ragged piece of the bead plastic on the bristle and I have to pick that off carefully so I don't get scratched when using it.
Same question. Bought a really bad wet brush like a year ago. I've had to cut off all of those beadless bristles because they scratch my scalp so bad. At this point, most of the bristles are gone.
Tweezers. I know it's tedious but it's what I use to pull those bits off.
I use the loop end of a Bobby pin to get the gunk off each bead.
This might sound wrong but i let my brush soak in simple bathroom cleaning spray and after a few hours i wash it off and it simply dissolves
I just put my brush under hot water for a minute and run my fingers along the length of the brush every time after brushing my hair. It takes care of the most of those lint rings around the bristles. And then I wash the brush more thoroughly like he does in the video when I wash my hair. They get stuck when they allow to build up but they disolve easily when you don’t let the dirt stack.
Source: my hair is butt length, oily, wavy and thick, just one brushing forms lint around every single brisle because there is so much hair area it collects it from.

This was so helpful to finally know how to get all of that icky stuff off of the little plastic bristles!!! I have been spending way too much time every few days meticulously picking it out with my hands while wearing rubber gloves! (horrible, I know).

This was a good video! Thanks. Lately, I've been using Dawn Powerwash for my hairbrush. (It has soap and alcohol in it) I spray it all over the brush. Leave it on for about 1/2 hour. Then I fill up a bowl with really hot water and let the brush with DP sit overnight. Then I rinse and brush the brush so it is squeaky clean. I have found that it is really important to change my pillowcases frequently like sometimes I'll change them every 2 nights. I'll have to try one of those denture brushes. Thanks for the tip.
The Mason-Pearson brushes come with their own butler-brush-cleaning brush. I keep that little black plastic brush in my shower and use it on all my brushes. I squirt some dish soap on my hairbrush and wash it every time I wash my hair. Works great!
I lost my Mason-Pearson brush when I moved, and I’m sure as soon as I buy a new one, the old one will reappear. I mean, they last forever, so it’s not like you need two. Mine didn’t come with a brush-cleaning-brush, though, and that sounds really useful.

What happens when water gets between the pad and brush? This has happened to me and impossible to get out
I thought about that too until I realized that the water gets in thru the bristles so it evaporates thru them too. I live in AZ so I sit the brush outside. It's bone dry in 30 minutes tops.
Most of my brushes had a small hole in the plastic so I kind of squeezed it out - the rest has to dry on its own
This is why I avoid those types of brushes and stick to vent ones instead - less faff as they're easier to clean
If the water happens to sit there a while - mold or something similar begins to grow between the back and the cushion of the brush. It's important but extremely difficult to ensure all the water is out, which is why if I go with a paddle brush like that - it would have to have holes in the back to help drain the water out if I would ever wash it with water...
On the other hand, a Denman style brush is super easy to clean with a toothbrush when every other row is taken out to make brushing and cleaning a pretty quick task.
That's hilarious, I've been cleaning my brushes with shampoo set/teasing brushes since cosmetology school in '95.. nobody ever taught me that, so I'm STOKED that I've been doing it right all along! Thanks Chris, this video is still a great helpful reminder of all the steps, bc barbicide alone doesn't always do a thorough job. YOU ROCK!
My 20+ year old Mason Pearson brushes came with a rectangular cleaning brush to get the hair out of the bristles. It works well on all of my brushes. I was gifted the first MP brush for my daughter’s fine, straight, tangle prone hair. I purchased another two MP brushes a year or two later. I paid about $100 for each brush then. Recently, I had looked up the brushes and was shocked to see the steep price increase. They were pricey 20 years ago, but today’s price is even crazier. I guess they raise them $10 a year. They definitely last because I still have and use all of mine. I will admit, I do tend to use my Wet brushes over MP, but they only last a couple of years and need to be replaced. If you have a MP for years, or decades, you might be able to justify its cost!

Great tips! I usually soak my brushes before I wash my hair, then after I’ve applied shampoo & am letting conditioner/hair mask soak in I step out of shower, grab my brushes, and clean them with a toothbrush in the shower that way it’s clean when I need to use it to blow dry my hair!

Yes, I would like to know as well. I typically clean it after every use, I’ll rake out the hair then take my wash cloth and scrub it with that to try and get the bristles clean as possible.
Yes please! Omg my blow dry brush is honestly disgusting despite getting all the hair out every time I use it 😂. The product buildup from using blow dry balms and smoothers I swear is impossible to get out.
Clean the hair off the brush part and then use rubbing alcohol swabs to clean the grease and buildup off

Love these tips for cleaning your brushes. Any tips for cleaning my blow dry brush? I usually just remove the hair from the barrel but I wonder if there is any way to clean the base of the brush. Obviously you can't soak it in water, but maybe there is a way to clean it. I bet product accumulates over time.

what i do is get the hair off first then i spray it with alcohol in a spray bottle, and then i wipe it down. it works really good.
The denture cleaners seem like a game changer! Thanks, Chris! May I throw out there an idea for another video: because I have bleached hair, I always use both conditioner and a hair mask afterwards. But I've heard things like if you put conditioner first then you're preventing the hair mask to really get into your hair and do its thing. Or that it doesn't really matter and conditioner is an unnecessary extra step because it's not going to do anything the hair mask can't do (and better). And every time I wash my hair, and I ask myself the same question, I think: "Chris probably has the answer and will surely have the best advice so I stop dumping my money down the drain". So I'm crossing my fingers you read this comment and clear up this conundrum (eventually). Thanks again!

I have been wondering the exact same thing! I haven't found any solid resources, but I remember hearing someone say that conditioner is meant to close the hair cuticle to help it retain moisture - so I have been using masks before conditioner. Now that I have taken the time to type this out, it seems like a mask would be sufficient on its own, so I'll go that route and see if I notice any difference from what I've been doing. I was just excited someone had the same question I did!
It's one or the other. No need to use a conditioner if you've already used a mask!
My lazy technique is I brush my hair lengths while the shampoo is sitting in them. I barely use any hair products so I consider it to be a decent method.
Ofc I do this gently and I start detangling from the ends. And, of course, I don't use my brushes on anyone else than myself (I am no hairdresser).

I just want to tell you, one of your videos saved my hair. I’ve had this ONE GIANT oily spot in the back of my head for so long and I was convinced that my water pressure wasn’t good enough to get all of the shampoo out. So I would never use much at all and I’d water it down. As soon as I actually washed my hair correctly with a decent amount of shampoo I was like omg. This is it? That’s all I had to do?! I actually felt kinda stupid I don’t know why I didn’t think to do that LOL I’ve never been taught how to correctly wash my hair. Thank you!

I have a slightly different method.
After cleaning out all the hair, and as much of the white fuzzy stuff as possible, I spray the brush heavily with blue window cleaner, then scrub and rinse. No soaking.
The cleaner dissolves the oil that holds the gunk on the brushes, and gets in between the bristles well.
Do you scrub immediately after spraying?

Over 20 years ago I spent alot of $$$ on a mason Pierson brush. I ❤ it. I've taken care of it exactly like you've said. I do it every Sunday. Super fast! I soak my brush/comb while in the shower.
The mason pearson instructions say it absolutely cannot be soaked though, I guess it's fine if you had it for 20 years?

I like to take my brushes, et al, in the shower each week when I wash my hair; except for my hair equipment I use cheap clarifying shampoo (would never use on my hair) that I keep to remove grease stains out of clothing & clean combs, brushes, etc.
Mason Pearson brushes come with their own little cleaner brush to get hair out first, and you use luke warm water with mild detergent with a little bit of baking soda, but get it like a bubble bath for your brush(that you will not be soaking the brush in). My mother always had Mason Pearson and she always used tearless Baby Shampoo for the cleanser with the baking soda, you dip the bristles only in the soap foam and gently use the cleaner brush to scrubby dub it, but hold it so the water can't get in the little air hole at the top of the pad. I have a little rack thing I built that lets the brush be face down but not on the bristles so it can drip dry.

Thank you for this video! My wet brush gets those white fuzz balls and I thought it was just me! I can’t tell if it’s lint from the towel or dust or my gray strands. Drives me crazy. I clean it out by hand frequently because I don’t want white lint balls in my dark hair. Good to know other people have the same issue. I’m guilty of using a toothbrush on the hair brush. 😊
I did this exact thing and, my oh my did it work wonders! I have no hair (bald) but a healthy beard. Before when I've taken a shower and I brush my beard it do not take 30 minutes before I feel it becoming oily. Now, after the "brushcleanse", it stays soft and smooth for days! Finally, I’ve been doing something right. But I find it satisfying to use the sprayer in the shower, put it down on the floor while it’s still soapy, hold it still with my foot and blast it with the highest setting. I have been doing this for probably 20 years, even with a vintage Avon brush and it works really well.
