In 1995 suddenly my career was taken from me. 2010 marriage disintegrated. 2024 finances aren't doing so well. Feel like I have been stripped of just about everything but I now walk closer with God and realise he is the source of everything. Hallelujah and AMEN to everything God has brought me through.
Thank you, the dark night of the soul has been a difficult concept for me to understand as always Bishop Robert Barron gives a beautiful spiritual explanation 🙏
Listening to u off and on for over 20 years u are Astounding Bishop Barron,Thank u for having such unique wisdom of GOD and Heaven, Debra Logan in Waterbury CT 🙏
I understand the “dark night of the soul” according to St John of the Cross and St Mother Theresa to be an absence of consolation. The absence of God’s consolation makes it necessary to deepen our relationship with God. I have found that experiencing desolation forces me to seek out different avenues to approach God, while asking for His help not to sink into despair.
Thank you for this comment. I’ve also heard it described as dryness, or the desert. I had a dramatic conversion from Judaism in 1990, and fell in love with Jesus. I was received into the Church in 1991. From the time of my conversion, my prayer life was full of consolations, signs and wonders, and palpable experiences. As time went on, they became fewer and fewer. For me, the difficult part now is that most of the time, at Mass, and when I pray, I feel nothing. I have to depend on faith and reason rather than feelings and warm fuzzies. So did Jesus. He went through times when the Father’s voice publicly proclaimed, You’re my Son and I love You. Now He’s at Calvary. The desolation leads Him to cry out, Why have You abandoned me!? But the rest of that Psalm, which Jesus knew perfectly well, reaffirms His faith, despite what He’s feeling. It’s a gift to us to be able to follow in His footsteps to Calvary, to experience the dryness, to trust in the Lord no matter what. It’s the road the Saints followed and if we want to be Saints, if God gives us the grace, we will persevere. God bless! 🙏✝️
That’s crazyyyy.. as I’m waiting for the video to load I pull the chair back to sit at table and eat my bread and cheese spread snack and then he begins with St John of the Cross “Dark Night of the Soul” which is the book that I have right in front of me. Whoa!!
I can't guarantee what I experienced was a 'dark night of the soul', as I never even knew what it was. But I've been severely depressed for a long time, and I experienced something that shook me to my core. I think Bishop Barron is kind of downplaying it. I believe(not saying I'm right), that dark night of the soul is God thrusting you into purgatory. Which is extremely scary. Facing your sins and unforgiveness on a level that truly shakes you to your core. To me, it felt like God and the devil are playing tug of war. And you're the rope. "Forgive them father, for they do not know what they are doing" "Go and sin no more" But I'm nobody. Why should anyone listen to me? Guess everyone will have to take a gamble with their life.
There is a big difference between depression and what I experienced. Depression is when life is tough, not going your way, and you have no hope. What I experienced was transcendental. After decade of wanting the political left to die, I suddenly understood that I have to forgive them, so that I may be saved. "Judge not lest ye be judged". Almost like I read the Words before, but didn't understand the graveness of it. I love those crazies on the left and am desperate to save them from themselves.
@xuxito Same here! God help us all, brother! May God bless you! I can tell you are well on your way to Heaven, just by acknowledging your own faults. A real Christian, if I ever seen one! ❤️🔥
‘Where have you hidden Beloved Why have you wounded my soul? ‘ If we read the Song of Songs we will see our own journey. ‘I went out to the wilderness calling for you But you were gone’ We can’t embrace the Truth of Christ until there is nothing left of self and only He exists within us
Right. When you say the Rosary, we are learning to suffer a little. It gives us a little discipline. And we offer our suffering to the very glory of our good God. It makes us stronger to suffer a little. To suffer is to love. Our Lord Jesus Christ, God became Man, showed us the best example.
What a wonderful description! We experience suffering and learn discipline by praying the rosary, or we could say, a consistent habit of prayer. Ora et Labora. Thank you!
This clip seemed to downplay the painful nature of this experience. To talk about it in such a way as to minimise the darkness of it does little justice to the reality. The loss experienced is the loss of the felt experience of God and his closeness, which was a wonderful consolation. (maybe having lasted for a number of years) It is now gone , Darkness. and a deep sense of loss.
Spiritual gluttony and avarice is spoke about in the book. Everything has to be deprived and solely trust in God that he is there for us and with us no matter what. I’m going thru it right now. But if you want to experience that heavenly bliss I suggest you go out in public with a mini speaker and pray the Rosary. Especially where there’s a large gathering. The Virgin Mary always showers me with graces of consolation joy whenever I go in the Rosary missions here in Los Angeles.
In the dark night we can find no consolation. We can't manufacture it ourselves. We must just patiently bear with it and trust in God's own providence. I'm in my 70s and housebound through illness. The illness teaches humilty and patience. Love and God bless you. Veronica from Scotland. xxx
"Singing for Life A civilization of five millennia-a path leading back to heaven So rich and splendid, impressing even Gods Ancient wisdom-a way shown by Gods Modern notions and conduct are following demons Atheism and evolutionary theory are spreading poison Tradition abandoned, like a lake dried-up Most people are Gods incarnate, coming to await the Creator Returning to heaven is your true joy For the sake of salvation we dance, moving our hands and feet And play each musical note with compassion ’Tis the Creator who asks me to sing of salvation January 26, 2010, in London" Master Li Hongzhi (Hong Yin VI, from Falun Dafa teachings)
I wish we would hear more of what Bishop Barron had to say on the subject. Why are these mini lectures always being interrupted by this other gentleman? It just gets a little confusing for me, because I've become so accustomed to the way Bishop Barron articulates & when he's paused or interrupted it throws me off somewhat.❤
You're hearing from that gentleman bc this is his personal channel lol. He can't play clips of Bishop Barron without adding in commentary, or else he might face copyright infringement issues. If you wish to hear Bishop Barron uninterrupted, I'd recommend going to HIS personal channel (Bishop Robert Barron is the name of it iirc) where he has hundreds of videos of homilies and such.
A 'dark night of the soul' is misleading. I don't know many that can truly suffer only for one night. My suffering for example has been going on for 1 1/2 years now ... likely to go on much longer. Please speak on this.
Dark Knight or the soul quieting the senses the mind hearing emotions distracting one self from their senses by closing your eyes to hopefully reflect on the higher power which is God our creator and father dark knight of the soul
Poor deluded Mr. Barron. He genuinely seems like a smart and nice guy but his analysis is so shallow and so full of fallacies. Among the truly intelligent and unbias, apologetics like these have been dead for centuries....
Can you shed some light on what is missing here? Does he have anything wrong? It’s only a 13 minute segment t I think of a much longer podcast . But On having a very hard time and so want to know what you may thjnk is missing. Thank you.
This is not apologetics. Bishop Barron is explaining St. John of the Cross in response to the questions he was being asked. I seriously doubt whether you have a better understanding of Carmelite spirituality than Bishop Barron.
Man, can't people ever be more specific when they say: "St. John" said this or that, but WHICH St. John? There is more than one. Please just state Apostle vs full of grace prophet. One could say the prophet St. John or the Apostle St. John. It is not difficult. Thanks 😊🙏
Since God does nothing to stop suffering, priests and pastors claim it's "good for you....later." Since they can't admit God is uncaring and must try to claim everything that happens is by God's plan and thus "eventually" "good".

“7 Story Mountain” also changed my life. Too bad I didn’t read it until I was over 50, life might have been different if I read it in high school. ❤✝️
Thanks

Christians can only share knowledge. Spirit of Christ will touch those God chooses to reveal himself. He is a wonderful counselor.
The soul that sinneth dies.we cannot see a soul. It's beyond our physical realm
Martin Luther experienced same during his last year's on earth.mother Teresa of Calcutta had same.
