- My name is Jared Beckwith, I’m a registered EEG technologist. In this video I review an EEG of an epilepsy patient with seizures since birth. This patient is considered to have refractory epilepsy since medication is not controlling the seizures. In patients with partial refractory epilepsy, they may consider responsive neurosimulation (RNS) or surgically remove the epileptogenic zone. This can be complicated because you don’t want to remove any basic functions found in the eloquent cortex. It is important to map the brain before epilepsy surgery to have the best outcome. I had a hemispherectomy and had a week long study a year before

The first thing to do is make sure you’re good at measuring a head with 10-20 system. To learn how to read EEG, any atlas textbook will help. Looking at the pictures will slowly familiarize yourself with normal EEG, and then see how abnormal patterns are different.
