Florida's Geography Problem

  • Florida isn't a huge state, it's actually smaller than America's least populated state Wyoming, but Florida is growing (like crazy). In fact, Florida is already the third most populated U.S. State, only smaller than California and Texas in terms of residential population. The "Sunshine State" is also the fourth largest economy in all of the United States; with a GSP (Gross State Product) of over a trillion dollars each year. But Florida is also in BIG trouble, as decades of pro-business policies, exponential growth, and America's worst overall geography have rocked the state of Florida to a point where.. the state's future looks darker than you could imagine.
Please note that the image marked as Panama City Beach is actually an image of Panama the nation. I apologize for any potential confusion, the image I licensed for this very short clip was mislabeled.

Thank you for watching my video on Florida's geography problems. I hope you notice the improved video and graphic design here, along with added quality controls of course. Because I realize quality is everything when (mostly) covering the cities and states that makeup the world's most powerful nation.

@@Z3N1TY0 Actually I do, I plan on doing an entire video on the depletion of the Colorado River. Something that arguably affects Arizona more than any other state. I have done so much research on how Arizona is becoming the U.S. capitol for microchip manufacturing, and an increasingly popular alternative to Silicon Valley. But I also find the state's rise, which coincided with the invent of air conditioning very interesting. So it may take a bit of time, but you will see a video that covers Arizona on this channel sooner rather than latter.

As a Florida resident for nearly ten years now, it is a beautiful place with great job opportunities, stunning nature, and endless things to do. That being said, it has grown at such a dramatic rate that the average person struggles to pay housing costs. Most everyone I know either cannot afford to live without a room mate/several income streams. Everything has sky rocketed in price, and the infrastructure in central Florida is lagging behind its growth, which is very cumbersome.

Florida has always been one of my favorite places to visit, so I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for the state. It also has a very unique culture, that I can hopefully address in a future video, as it's so much more than just the elderly and tourist. The growth there has been so exponential over the past decade that many people forget that it's also been one of the fastest growing states (since pretty much always).

I just did some basic math and the Everglades alone take-up approximately 12% of the state's landmass. So I agree that the usable portion of Florida is much smaller than many people would think. Also keep in mind that the Everglades area has already been reduced by more than 50%.

I grew up in south Florida and left the state over 20 years ago. Each time I go back to visit family, I do notice the growth expansion in areas that were once swampland, farms or cattle ranches. I’m always amazed at the change but the population has grown so much that going anywhere that was once mins, now would take longer because of traffic. I notice the high cost of renting and buying and my hats off to those who do what they must to make ends meet. I do not see myself moving back and I’m glad I had the opportunity to leave then for school and opportunities to travel to other states for work. There are other parts of the US that I love that now Fla is only for visiting family.

I grew up in the Midwest, but have lived in central Florida for 25 years now. Honestly, as climate and terrain go, the Pacific Northwest is much more ideal for me. But I’ve lived here for so long now that even with any drawbacks, it would be incredibly hard for me to leave. During the summers when it’s oppressively hot and humid, we have daily violent thunderstorms, and there’s always a possibility of an occasional hurricane, I’d much rather be elsewhere. But then you get to the good months when there aren’t those things, it’s beautiful and comfortable, and it’s freezing almost every other place in the country, and it’s wonderful. Florida might not quite have the cultural offerings as say NYC, but it still has some. And even though it has the oldest continually inhabited city in the U.S. in St. Augustine, it always feels like it has a very short history compared to many other areas like the northeast or Midwest. But again, if you look, there is history too. We’re the butt of many jokes and controversies, but I think part of that is simply our huge population. Anywhere where there are lots of people, simply by the numbers you’ll have more of those things too. But my point is that nowhere is perfect. The west has wildfires, earthquakes, overpopulation, and high prices. The Midwest and northeast can be freezing for what feels like half the year, can also be pricey in specific areas, and have areas of huge decline like the rust belt. The plains states don’t have a whole lot to offer, can have tornadoes, and can be very boring and sparse. Areas of the Deep South like Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana have a lot of poverty and low opportunity. Even Alaska and Hawaii are extremely isolated. But ALL of those areas, just like Florida, do have their positives. I suspect that someday, I will end up moving from Florida, but I don’t know. In just the 25 years that I’ve been a resident, I’ve seen a big shift from it just being sort of a state of transient residents, to many people like myself living here for decades, and raising families. And our industry has grown tremendously from just being tourism and agriculture like the old days. Infrastructure, despite some unfortunate displacement of wildlife, has also improved a lot. But your home is what you make of it, and you can focus on the negatives, or choose to focus on the positives. I choose the latter.

FLORIDA WAS GREAT back in the period 1950-1975, when overpopulation had not taken over. NOW, every Northern retiree fleeing from the Northeast & upper Midwest is intent on living here. Likewise, there is a surge of Hispanics from Puerto Rico and Latin America - who are moving away from South Florida into the Orlando Metro area. HOME PRICES are soaring, while WAGES remain low. It's kind of like Milton's "Paradise Lost" - and the sad thing is, it's the PEOPLE who have done it !

I've visited Florida, often, since 1963 & previously owned a small, rental & future retirement home there for 14 years!
But, I've noticed that just about everything costs as much as in northern states, yet salaries lag far behind! Yes,
Florida has no state income tax, but what good is that if you're making thousands of dollars less? Gov. DeSantis
will have a hard time justifying the low salaries, high insurance & water costs, when he runs for U.S. president!

    • @SomethingDifferentFilms

I won't touch on the politics here. But Florida's cost of living has been outpacing it's median income at a rate that's outright unbelievable. Just look at Disney World, the states biggest employer and yet so many seasonal and part time positions.

Yes, this state has been heading in a bad direction. High crime city and rural, meth/oxy crisis, bottom tier education system and extremely high homeowners /car insurance rates when compared to rest of country. The financial math can still work for retirees bringing down northern $$$, but many younger people move down and realize the 'Florida' they visited as a child on vacation was really an illusion and move back out of state.

"Just about everything costs as much as in northern states." That's utter nonsense. Things that cost the same everywhere do, sure, but that's everywhere. Housing remains significantly cheaper than housing in comparable settings in the northeast (Don't compare a house in Vinland, NJ to one in Coconut Grove) and property taxes are significantly lower. Yes, salaries are less, but if you move to Florida you get an immediate implicit raise from their being no state income tax. Beaches are free, unlike in NJ. Sales tax is lower than in NY or CT, it is cheaper to register a vehicle, the toll roads are cheaper and easier to avoid. It is just way cheaper to live here.

Much of New Orleans is also below sea level. New Orleans also has much of the same meteorological challenges. And New Orleans is also subsiding too. And those aren’t the real challenges. The real challenges are from government political policies that erode away the economic stability of the area. The poor and the middle class are becoming increasingly poor. This forces these people to relocate into other places where there’s better economic stability and growth. Detroit is a fine example of what I am talking about.

As property insurers leave and the cost to repair and refurbish homes every few years thanks to hurricanes keeps going up exponentially, I really question how much longer Florida will be able to be a "low tax" State. Taxpayers from the other 49 and DC should not be constantly on the hook for federally funded cleanups after major hurricanes that are now happening nearly every year in Florida and at some point the US government has to say "you all know what the score is, and it's YOUR responsibility to pay for whatever damage results from major weather systems that are only bound to get more frequent and more expensive to recover from as time goes on".

Every single tree is cut down in the process. The few developers are all that make the money while the rest of us have to put up with the loss of beauty in our county. Rapid growth with no thoughts to infrastructure or density impact. Even parts of Lake County that used to be "outside" the madness are now busting at the seems and I'm constantly driving thru areas that used to be open land that I don't even recognize where I am now without GPS. And I can handle some growth, but there's no parks being built, no thought to the environmental impact, traffic, etc. And so much of it is retail/food strip mall type businesses.
