    Veeam backup for 365 works very well, and the free one will back up 10 users.
    You can connect your local storage (NAS or otherwise) to Wasabi object storage that is really cheap for a terabyte of hot storage, or even something like glacier for cold storage.

    One feature I would love Synology to add is the ability to restore an entire mailbox to PST from active backup for Microsoft 365. So far as I can see you do an individual email or the whole mailbox back up to that 365 mailbox online.

    The issue I am having with Active back for O365/G Suite is you can't backup the backup. If the Active Backup app in Synology crashed and you need to reinstall it, the new installation cannot access the old backup data.

    I have unfortunately come across multiple cases where M365 data was lost despite the retention features (including one where Microsoft's own support team accidentally purged a customer's data). Retention is not a backup - they serve different purposes. I strongly believe that if the data is important, you should have a backup.

So, my question is, what level/plan of MS365 subscription can be used with a Synology ActiveBackup for MS365 app? Our firm only subscribe to the Microsoft 365 Business Basic. I believe it does not include any Azure subscription. Please advise. Thank you.

    So I haven't looked into what the latest rules are with O365, but we used to just enable lit hold on every user which solved for accidental deletion and losing data for accounts that you terminate (pull their lic). The one downside is that there is a problem where the deleted items recovery/recovery bucket (there is actually another bucket under the deleted items recovery) would fill up and cripple the mailbox (it's hidden from you even as admin and MS can't clear it out either last I knew). Fixing that means you have to migrate the user to another account and move current mail over which is a massive PITA, but it usually only impacts IT users that have millions upon millions of BS log emails. The best way around this is to encourage folks to NEVER empty deleted items...

  • @movax20h
    @movax20h 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Microsoft and Google do have offline backups for all of this (maybe not all all, some things like Google Photos, and other things, might not have full resolution backups). But they will have it, and use it to restore corrupted data, be it a group of many users, or a single user, or single data item. But only for the cases of actual data corruption, software fault, and other issues on their side. If you delete or overwrite the file, and then ask them to retrieve the older version of that files from their backups, they are not going to do it. It is not their fault, and they will not do it. Of course, in some extreme circumstances, if you pay them A LOT they will consider this, but we are talking 6-7 digit numbers for this, and working in the industry, I don't remember this ever actually happening. For mistakes or malicious user, you need to have a separate backup plan. It doesn't need to be a local backup or your own solution, but you need to consider it.

    What is a good software for NAS? I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for that.
    I'll be retiring 6-core/12threads CPU with 32GB RAM PC and I'd like to make it into NAS.
    PC is already running dual boot with Ubuntu, so I'm fine doing some work to install the software. But I'd like it to be comparable to Synology's software.
    Is it even possible? NAS + surveillance cameras + good user experience.
    I noticed that Synology with more than one internet port would cost me a lot so I'd to save some money...

    I just upgraded to a DS220+ 2x Seagate Ironwolf 12tb Raid 1 from a DS218+ 2x 8tb Ironwolf Raid 1 so far the DS220+ is much slower than the DS218+. Its very noisy and slow compared to my old NAS, the drives make weird noises. Its so slow to access, I'm transfering a 44gb file now and its running at 3.87MB/s my old NAS ran above 100MB/s. I put a ticket in with Synology it took them 2 days to respond, I just responded to them lets see what happens but I have to say my DS218+ is fantastic but this DS220+ is significantly worse in my experience.

    One of my favorite MSP's/CSP's suggest you don't need to host anything local anymore due to the retention policy changes you can make and changes to certain features native to Azure. Get's a lil confusing to be honest to find out what works :(

    • @ProTechShow
      @ProTechShow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The retention policies cover a lot of scenarios (mostly user error), but they don't protect against everything. I've seen several instances of data loss despite them and so I always recommend a separate backup. Whether that backup lives locally or in the cloud is not so important - as long as it's external to M365 (it could even be Azure, although I know some people consider that too close).

    • @kristopherleslie8343
      @kristopherleslie8343 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ProTechShow well I was under the impression it could be piped to azure. There was a vendor (forgot the name) that would allow you to target m365, rack space, google and aws and back up to any cloud target for a reasonable price. All the api fun was taken care of if I recall.

      @ProTechShow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kristopherleslie8343 yes, there are a number of vendors that can do cloud-to-cloud backups. It's just not a native feature of M365 (but plenty of 3rd parties can do it using their APIs to extract the data). For me this is fine. Some people do get worried about backing up M365 to Azure because they're both in the Microsoft cloud, but I'm less concerned about all of Microsoft going up in smoke (you’re paying them to worry about that) - I’m more worried about data corruption, a software bug, or an administrative cockup (your admin or Microsoft’s) inadvertently trashing the copy of your data in M365 itself. Unfortunately, I’ve seen all of those happen!
