This has always been my favorite of the late Beethoven piano works. When every deep emotion is expressed as one emotion, as it is here, something utterly transcendent emerges. Some of the commentators have characterized it as beyond human, and it may be, but if it is, this combination of Gould's genius and Beethoven's genius elevates the human into something amazingly noble, touching, and unfathomably profound. I am very grateful that it has been made available.

Thank you for posting! I have been listening to the recordings of 109 by many different pianists, so far this seems to be my favorite. Beautiful long phrases and legato he does. Everything makes so much more sense. Especially when the theme comes back at the end, it raps up everything that happened before, leaves us with beautiful memories of sound that Beethoven left for us. I guess all pianists aim to do so, but it is very difficult to work it out like that. l wouldn't be able to start clapping my hands so quickly after a performance like this..
Thank you Beethoven! Thank you Gould!

I think the Vivace var (9:47) is too fast but I must add that it must surely sound like what Beethoven would've done.

wow, that was amazing! Many of the tempi were not something I would imitate, but he certainly brings out something no one else even remotely touches in this late masterpiece.

For those who are able to hear it without comparing it to other performances, this is the only one needed to raise you up and reveal exquisite beauties. And you can return to Gould again and again. I don't care about those offended (are you real?) by it.

i agree completely! I guess its understandable since Bach was his obsession but I really prefer his romantic side !

This could be the worst of "worst interpretations by great pianist" I have ever heard.

This is my impression too. In TH-cam there is another interpretation at home or in studio after an interview, it seems. A really diferent interpretation. And just the first movement.
