China's claim to the SCS goes back to even during the era of WWII, when they were not strong. Naturally, with more power begets more bargaining chip. The Americans forcing their will on how the world ought to be is just as much a reflection of the power they have. Go against the US and you will face hefty economic sanctions. Look at Russia.

The Philippines is simply exercising it's rights over the 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone granted to it by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and even China have their respective 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zones. China however wants all those Zones and claiming these as it's own territory. China claims the Natuna Islands of Indonesia which all the neighboring countries recognize as Indonesian territory and yet China claims these are Chinese territory. Incredibly insatiable and perverted Chinese greed for domination over almost the entire South China Sea. It's not surprising that all these affected countries are rapidly building up their navy, air force and army to defend their rightful territories.

If you look at China National Shame Maps (which different versions were released with alternating claims), their claim is actually more extreme. They don't just claim South China Sea, but they genuinely believe Central Asia, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Kashmir, South Tibet/Arunachal Pradesh, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Okinawa, Mongolia, Outer Manchuria, Sakhalin and Korea to be Chinese territory that were "seized" by Europeans and Americans in the 19th century. It's not just South China Sea. It's also with India, Australia and many parts of the World which is why all these places are with West too.
Though, Grabbing of Resources and playing I'm the Superior 1 has been done by the West too and in Ancient Times, Not Just by West Too for grabbing of resources and playing Superior 1 too (Grabbing of Resources is done by Most Nations Worldwide to Many Others and Not Just West which includes India and others too in relation to Africa nowadays).
In Ancient Times during BC and AD Period, the Indian Subcontinent and China were the Most Powerful, Rich Ones that were Ahead in Many Areas followed along with the South American Regions, Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc (South American, African and Arab Worlds too).
The so-called Western Civilization which has Mixture of Different Cultures Too that can be separated from 1 Unified Western Civilization started with the Greeks and Romans during the Last Few 100 Years of BC Period that went into the 1st Few 100 Years of AD Period. But yes, even when the Greeks and Romans were Doing Well, the Indian Subcontinent and China were still the World Leaders including Economically especially the World Economic Share where the Latter 2 Not Only had Trade but were Expanding their Regions Too.
Eastern Europe had done better than Western Europe Not to Collapse before Western Europe made a Comeback. That comeback by Western Europe about 1000 to 1500 Years Later was also with the Philosophy of "Gold, Glory and God" that started with the Spanish and Portuguese which went on with the Dutch, British, French, Danish/Swedish, etc across the World where they Grabbed Resources and did lots more as their Philosophy of God, Glory and God was to Colonize Places, Steal the Resources including Commodities including Gold that helped in Expanding their Colonies and Bringing About Riches to them as well as Cultural Imperialism including Knocking Out Belief Systems and Religions of Places They Colonised where some parts of that Cultural Imperialism Failed in some regions while most of their Cultural Imperialism succeeded in many places they colonised.
(China had become More or Less Unified About 1000 Years while Indian Kingdoms Ruled Not Just Parts of Sri Lanka and Parts of Central Asia but also indirectly if not directly ruled Parts of South East Asia or ASEAN Nations of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, etc through Descendants of theirs.
Philippines was a Region of Polities which used to followed Folklore Religions/Animism where the Oldest Filipinos are Negritos and Austronesians [descendants of Taiwanese]. 1 of the World's Oldest Traders were Filipinos who were doing Jade Trade with Taiwan that expanded to Other Parts of Southeast Asia or ASEAN Nations. That Trade collapsed because these Regions then did Trade across the Silk and Spice Trade Regions especially with Indian Subcontinent and China including the various Indian kingdoms.
Before the Vikings, the Greatest Seafarers were the Polynesians [Austronesians have differences with Polynesians where Some Southeast Asians are Both But Not All Austronesians including Not All Filipinos are Polynesians But Many Filipinos are Austronesians].
1 of the World's Oldest Ports is Lothal from Gujarat [The world's oldest ports are between Arab World, African World and Indian Subcontinent]. The World's Oldest Emporium has been in Muziris in Kerala of South India [Emporium is a Large Commerical Place where Commerce and Trade took place simultaneously with many other regions around the world where the Muziris were Trading with the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Africans, Southeast Asian Regions etc].
Even though the Odias may have been the 1st ones from India to move around to Southeast Asia/ASEAN Nations including Myanmar, Cholas were the ones especially to indirectly colonise parts of South East Asia or ASEAN Nations of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, etc through Descendants of theirs [In Philippines, it was via Cebu, Manila, Tondo, Butuan etc where many of the Tagalog and Bisaya Words come from Tamil and Sanskrit, the 2 Oldest Languages of India which includes the word "Rajah". That's how Hinduism/Buddhism landed in Southeast Asia/ASEAN Nations where at that point of time, Butuan of Philippines had More Gold than Sumatra of Indonesia [can be seen in the Philippine Museum][unfortunately, the Spanish and Americans stole a lot of the commodities including Gold to expand their regions and increase their richness within South America and their own wealth worldwide][Spanish knocked out a lot of the Filipino history which is why the Earliest that the Indianized Kingdoms were there in Philippines were from 900 AD though could be before as Spanish destroyed a lot of the Filipino history].
After that, came Islam in Philippines by late 14th Century where Western Christianity was brought by Spain to Philippines in 1521 AD through Catholicism. Protestantism of Western Christianity came to Philippines 1 Century Later where Today, think Philippines has Western Christianity of Catholics, Western Christianity of Protestants and Eastern Christianity of Orthodox Christians.
America ruled Philippines from 1898 to 1946 with Japan invading it during World War 2 too.
Philippines was 1 of the 1st Regions to be Colonized by West or European Powers while Thailand Wasn't Colonized by Western Powers But was Colonized by Asian Powers.
Now, Western Christianity that Originated from Western Europe isn't the Oldest Christianity as that's the Eastern Christianity as Christianity started in Middle East which spread to parts of India via Kerala, China, Sri Lanka, etc before it spread across Europe where the World's Oldest Christians are in Middle East, South India via Kerala and Tamil Nadu, China, Sri Lanka.
Western Christianity that Originated from Western Europe are of 2 Main Denominations - Catholics of Roman Catholics, Latin Catholics, etc as well as Protestants including Born Again Christians etc. Eastern Christianity are of 2 Main Denominations again of Orthodox Christians [Originated Mostly from Eastern Europe] and Oriental Christians also known as Syrian or Syriac Christians also known as St Thomas Christians [Originated from Middle East that spread to parts of India via Kerala and then Tamil Nadu, China, Sri Lanka, etc].
Just like how Western Europeans knocked out Many Countries Worldwide including Philippines where Spanish Destroyed Most of its History Forcing it to Follow Western Christianity via Catholicism, the Western Europeans that landed in India through the Indian Kingdoms tried to do the same via British, Dutch, French, Portuguese, Danish etc where they tried to Destroy Eastern Christianity and Force Western Christianity even on Eastern Christians [It didn't succeed even though India Today has Western Christianity of Catholics, Western Christianity of Protestants, Eastern Christianity of Orthodox Christians, Eastern Christianity of Oriental Christians as well as Churches or Christian Denominations with Fusion of Both Western and Eastern Christianity].
So, Grabbing of Resources and playing I'm the Superior 1 has existed for Millenniums by Many Players knocking out others and THAT INCLUDES EVEN WITHIN EACH REGION where can see that the Ones who have Got Knocked Out the Most are the Indigenous People of Each Nation Worldwide where Today, the RICHEST PEOPLE OF JUST PHILIPPINES ALONE are Many of the CHINESE FILIPINOS FOLLOWED by Many of the Spanish Filipinos and Many of the Indian Money-Lending Filipinos WHILE MOST of the OTHER FILIPINO Groups are Facing Challenges where even the Cultural Aspects of Food, Music, Clothing, Architecture, Entertainment and so on Too, Most Filipinos Follow the Cultural Aspects that come from West or India or China or Arab World while Their Own Root Cultures which are the Cultures Before the Spanish Ruled Them Got Knocked Out A Lot by the Spanish who Went About Destroying Root Cultures [The British, French, Dutch, American, Portuguese, Danish, etc have also done that to the Places that they have Ruled in Last 500 Years where the Damages Have Been Way Worse than What the Asian Regions did to Each Other or African Regions did to Each Other, etc])

West Philippine Sea simply refers to the eastern part of the South China Sea which is the Philippines' western territorial sea and western part of its EEZ (exclusive economic zone). Likewise, Indonesia's North Natuna Sea refers to its northern EEZ, which is the southern part of South China Sea. China has no jurisdiction nor sovereign rights over these EEZs. China's encroachment in the West Philippine Sea is against international law and the Philippines' sovereign rights over its EEZ. Their repeated tailing of the Philippine Coast Guard is also dangerous for it could cause unwanted events that may lead to bigger, graver problems. But not only that, some of their activities are also said to be environmentally damaging. The damage done to the coral reefs within the Philippine EEZ and China's repeated harassments of Filipino fishers threaten their livelihoods and the food security of many Filipinos. In fact, the Philippines will be filing an environmental case against China for allegedly causing massive destruction to coral reefs within Philippine EEZ.

it should be noted that the controversial former president Duterte's foreign policy pursued a softening and rapprochement of relations with China and Russia while distancing on the United States, saying that the Philippines should not rely on its traditional military partners, but instead accommodate with the aforementioned countries to "diversify its foreign policy options in the light of the changing geo-political landscape of Asia." in addition to this, he controversially delayed the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement's implementation (signed under Barack Obama and also then-president Benigno Aquino III in 2014) until his term ended, including a suspension of the Visiting Forces Agreement on February 2020 (which was eventually reversed by June that year), despite the Filipinos having a very (and I mean it) positive view towards the US and a negative view against China (in part due to disputes).
that being said, Marcos (incumbent president) has taken a much more hardline stance on China and focused on a normalization of US relations, as well as overseeing the kickstart of the repeatedly-delayed EDCA projects, resuming the ages-old tradition of the US-Philippine military alliance. you can see how china reacted to the normalization that ended the Duterte doctrine effectively. this is just a reoccurring issue which had just escalated within the last few months.
for closing, as a Filipino myself, I view China very negatively. I view the Duterte foreign doctrine is a backwards and defeatist decision since it's the Chinese who started the dispute first. they should follow UNCLOS, it's a very simple piece of law, and they don't need to encroach on other countries' water territory. I believe that there should be fair play on claiming territories instead of China taking them all.

To be honest, if ASEAN develops further in terms of integration, I can see the claimant states opening up the SCS for all ASEAN members to enjoy. ASEAN is coming out as a potential economic superhouse in the decades to come thanks to Indonesia and the improving economies of Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Likewise, ASEAN also has a strict ethos of not allowing superpower politics into the region (except for the Philippines which remains stubbornly attached to the US), and so I can see China coming to an agreement with a united ASEAN front going forward - and China is willing to work with ASEAN because it is a strong market for them to work with and China would appreciate the region's general dislike for making their political agenda shaped by the West (except again of course the Philippines).

3:20 it's not really fair to say that China's 9 dash line competes with Taiwan's claims, because due to officially still having the 1-China policy Taiwan just says that they claim it too because they're actually China. It's just the same claim being made by what is in theory a rival Chinese government.

Taiwan is complicated. They are sorta obligated to do so because a major part of the unspoken truce with the PRC is that they will pretend to be the same country. As long as their statements more-or-less can be construed to align with mainland China's policies, then all is well. Hence why they say they also believe China should unify some day. They just say under their breath 'with us in charge' afterwards.

You can add the prejudice Filipinos have against the “Chinese” in our country (mostly Filipino Chinese). This goes way back but in modern times mainly boils down to the fact that most big businesses are controlled by the FilChi community while most just marry amongst themselves (thus, a euphemism in the country called “scaling the Great Wall”). Even with Du30s China-friendly policies, the underlying culture really didn’t change that much.

Yes, there’s a lot of Chinese ethnic and cultural influence in the Philippines; dating back not only decades, but centuries .
But as a broad sweep, there is a MAJOR difference between “Chinese-Filipino families”, and the more recent influx of mainlander-Chinese coming in the last ~20 years. Most of the latter aren’t even Filipinos in legal status. And in fact, many are overstaying their visas.
Most of the former category i.e. Chinese-Filipino families I know….are proud of, and loyal to their country (it’s the only one they’ve known)

The Philipines themselves are a Top example there. Cause the US has a Defense Pact with them. So the US would come to their Defense if they got Invaded or Attacked.
Therefore if this Court had Ruled that these are Chinese Waters. And the Philipines had gotten Attacked there by Chinese Vessels. The US would not be obligated to do anything. Because the Philipines would have been seen as the Aggressor.

The Ten Great Campaigns (Chinese: 十全武功; pinyin: Shíquán Wǔgōng) were a series of military campaigns launched by imperialist Qing dynasty of China in the mid-late 18th century during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1735-1796).
President Xi's argument is based on historical Imperial China's Ten Great Campaigns (Chinese: 十全武功; pinyin: Shíquán Wǔgōng).
They included three to enlarge the area of Qing control in Inner Asia: two against the Dzungars (1755-1757) and the "pacification" of Xinjiang (1758-1759).
The other seven campaigns were more in the nature of police actions on frontiers already established: two wars to suppress the Gyalrong of Jinchuan, Sichuan, another to suppress the Taiwanese Aboriginals (1787-88), and four expeditions abroad against the Burmese (1765-1769), the Vietnamese (1788-1789), and the Gurkhas on the border between Tibet and Nepal (1790-1792), with the last counting as two.
Imperial China is an imperialist power that led to the engagement with European powers. Example from Sino-Burmese Wars, Imperial China invaded the Konbaung dynasty of Burma (Myanmar) *multiple* times. During the 4th Sino-Burmese Wars starting in 1768, Imperial China invaded the Kingdom of Burma. Burma hired European musketeers and gunners, hence Burma allied itself with the rising French Empire against Imperial China's invasion.
The old world issues didn't disappear.

While Philippine democracy is weak, and does suffer from institutional backsliding, a powergrab like his father did would likely be met with public hostility again. What Marcos Jr. is more likely to do is to entrench himself first within the traditional oligarchy (who were also the enemies of his father before and abetted in ousting him) and use the tested methods of corruption rather that go the way of his adventurist father who ruined them for the better part of almost half a century.

The reason you don't see the US getting involved in the past or now is because the US and its allies assigned sovereignty of SCS to China at the end of WWII through treaties which became international law now and it cannot be superseded by something like EEZ which was created in the early 1980s.

@@erwinmatic5062what you say is you projecting your own moral failings. The US will defend treaty allies, period. Kissengers quote is taken out of context and irrelevant. 52 nations are allied to the US and they are happy with it, none want to leave the US alliance.

Not disputed since there are no merits on chinese claims in wps, china is only using its power to grab areas which belongs to philippines, i hope that china will pay dearly for its unlawful acts against filipino people.

Some one said the US Mutual Defense Treaty pact is iron clad.
Yeah , it's all well and good when the American interests are aligned. However when Sh!t hits the fan the leadership will use clever political statements to declare victory then cut and run. Ironically Bush Jr's war cry and shame tactic.
I saw it happen in Vietnam. I saw it happen in Afghanistan and others.
I do not deny the resolve of the US men and women in uniform. It is the leadership and their politricks that's my concern. We do not have Eisenhower or Roosevelt levels of leadership in our Beloved USA today. What we have are the Killary types and their heartless friends who more than likely have nuclear hardened bunkers. This weapons build up from various nations is a huge concern.
As a Filipino, I'm not blind to the fact that this is a power play to protect and maintain American dominance against China's ambition.
I know the playbook well. voices like mine will be met with, Are you Filipino? Traitor! China Sympathizer! Unpatriotic.
Please my brothers and sisters of the world tread carefully.
It reminds me of the Spongebob meme with Patrick, we saved the world! At a huge expense.

America and Britain have shown us that International Law is just a suggestion or guidance, as they don't need to followed. So basically weak nations just have to put up with stronger countries taking whatever they want. Until law is applied equally to all, it does apply to anyone.

Tf has Britain done the last 100 years other than join NATO coalitions? Ignoring North Ireland it's been pretty boring

@px7355 you mean those islands that have been British for approximately *two* hundred years, and which the Argentines illegally invaded?

See, the problem is even though there is no one to enforce international law, breaking it still makes other nations nervous about existing or future agreements with you. That's why when Russia invaded Ukraine both Sweden and Finland realized being neutral was meaningless to Russia. And that is why you have most of south east Asia forming alliances against China.
