Susan Jaffe is a gifted teacher. The atmosphere she creates in class is one of strong discipline yet joyful playfulness. Her calm energy provides a catalyst for the technique and creativity of the dancers to manifest. She is a joy to watch.
35:03 the doooog 😍😍😍 Love the atmosphere of the class, she really seems to know her dancers. Their appreciation for each other and their team spirit is amazing :)
No joke, that was a hard class for a Friday! The trajectory of ABT is exponential at this point in my opinion. Not a lot of media vitriol, just consistency and progress. Ms Jaffe was my idol, I think we are around the same age. To see her coaching a friend's son is wonderful. ABT will always be my favorite ballet company.
When you say it was a hard class it is because the dancers have honed their technique from rigorous training they have most of their skill but she is turning the average car into a Ferrari. She expects that everyone has done this due diligence and she puts them through their paces. A challenging class ,I would be truly knackered after that but it would have been so much fun. Note the kind and helpful corrections she gives .dancers suffer a lot of abuse from some and it really takes the joy out of the thing we love. I can hardly believe I did ballet as a job and even got paid for it!
Oh you beautiful people. I love company class because everyone is on equal footing. This company class is so different to watch than the Royal Ballet one! I'm from the uk and always watch the Royal Ballet live stream on world ballet day. The way the dancers, dress, move, take class feels so different here watching ABT. Also ABT like looking at themselves in the mirror wayyyyyyyyy more I've noticed haha. But great class.
I think it's the positioning, especially the 5th position from which every exercise/movement starts and finishes. The ABT also seems more polished. The emphasis with the Royal Ballet seems to be a lot more on the 'acting' side rather than the pure ballet which I so love. And as long as they perform choreographies by MacMillan and Ashton (which I loathe, and are so out of date) this will not change. In this video, the girl in the red leotard is absolutely amazing, she does 4 attitude derriere turns, very difficult, and also 6 almost 7 pirouettes, very very nice! And I love Susan Jaffe, her classes are brilliant, and with a sense of humour!
76 and counting with one year behind me in a simple ballet studio in my neighborhood and I love coming home and watching you all do your class you do it with such grace and beauty I struggle with every muscle of my body, but I’m there to gain flexibility and mobility, and I hope to stand up one of these days and do it with you all. Ha ha ha ha but it’s great to watch and I love the live music. The pianist is amazing. Thanks for posting this I wish you posted more.

Que te vaya super bien con el training! Vamos que se puede!!!
I met Susan once at Tower Records circa 2000. She'd called in for a CD that she wanted held for her. She was praising her former NYCB friend while i was gushing over her (Susan). Very humble and funny and kind. I know it had nothing to do with dance but a small interaction sometimes really tells u how a person operates.
The first ballet I ever saw in person was Swan Lake, and dancing the role of Odette/Odile that night was Susan. ABT was on summer tour and they came to Chicago. I was instantly in love with ballet, and forever transformed by one of the greatest American ballerinas. Truly a once in a lifetime experience! 🩰💓🩰
I also saw a young Ms. Jaffe dance the parts of Odette and Odile at the Auditorium in Chicago. Barishnikov was the artistic director at the time and trying to bring up and develop his younger dancers such as Jaffe. She was paired with the great Alexander Godunov in Swan Lake and it was an evening I will never forget. Jaffe held her own all night with Godunov and was immaculate except for one occasion when doing a partner pirouette with him when she accidentally extended her right hand too far and cracked him right across his face. The veteran Godunov shook off the contact and carried on. But a star was born that night and her name was Susan Jaffe. Good luck to her as the ABT's latest artistic director.
@@brucerehberger9080 What a small world!! We saw the McKenzie Swan Lake in ‘94. Right after he took over as director. I wish I could have seen the Baryshnikov version of swan lake. I don’t think I’ve seen his version before. I can still remember asking my mom why the dancers were so squeaky. I never saw a company on stage before. And I definitely didn’t know what rosin was, I was only 9. I studied at Ballet Chicago and The Joffrey and now I’m a teacher. ABT is in great hands!! Ballet companies are 80% female so it’s really awesome to see my heroes as the current company directors!! Happy Holidays 🎄🎄🎄

The center exercises are wonderful and the adagio was gorgeously done by the dancers. Such a fun atmosphere too, it reminds me of the community I had in American figure (ice) skating rinks as well. Carlos Gonzalez (42:18 in the blue shorts) has a wonderful ecarte develope. His grace is fantastic, even with his good allegro he can also do a great adagio.
