I was gifted a LR3 v8 HSE a year ago today from my father, he loovess land rovers and for him to give me it must have been hard, but it is the best vehicle we WILL EVER OWN. It takes us to some extreme places and never lets up on surprising us with its capabilities. I will cherish and will always fix it and never EVER sell it. Keep up the videos they are awesome you two

You are definitely right as far as emotions go, had my D3 for just over 3 years and it is by far the best car i have owned. I've driven Land rovers for 26 years starting with an 81 2dr Range Rover in 94 then an 85 4dr in 2002 just before my first daughter was born. In 2006 i bought a 98 TDI auto discovery which was a great car , it wasn't the fastest car on the road but it would tow my camper trailer easily and still return 10- 12 ltrs/100klms. The D3 TDV6 auto is far and away a more superior vehicle, it has twice the power with just a 0.2ltr increase in capacity and just everything so easily and with excellent economy for a 3 ton brick - i have a bull bar, winch, roof rack, spot lights, awning, cargo barrier and dual battery system so its pushing 3000 kgs.
I nearly fell out with it when the oil pump tensioner mount failed causing some top end damage but luckily i was able to repair it with very little cost.
As always another great video you guys.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you very much. I agree, the diesel consumption of the TDV6 is quite unimpressed in regard to mass changes. It does not take much less when driving slow but it also does not take much more when towing or driving in the city.
Only time I managed to get above 12,5 Liters was offroad in the alps with full load and small gear.
At all other times it reports 9.5 liters (which are 10.5 according to my phone app).

Disco is my absolutely favorite for off road adventures. I use it mainly for aproach to paraglading take off places. I have onother one favorite car - my Opel Ampera - fantastic electric experience. Secondly, and what drew me to LR Time is working on the car, oh and by the way I agree with you on the V8 subject, my favourite engine has been the 4.4 Range Rover diesel, I think it was 700 nm of torque, really amazing.

5 liter 375HP gas V8 on my last Disco 4 - tons of power, engine not taxed for the most part, no turbos to fail and in sports mode, it was a rocket (for a 2200kg car). Plus that growl of a V8 when started or pushed hard...

    @AlexStrugariu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Howdy y'all! Loved the video and all the stories.
Although the D3 is surely the best car we have ever owned, we did not own many thus far:
    1. 2003 Freelander 1 Serengeti Td4 manual (Icelandic Blue) - our first car, bought after our wedding in 2009 (we were 22), with 160k km on the clock. We still have it and it's just used as the Mrs' commute vehicle, and it has around 320k km now. Until 2017, it has taken on us on many, many adventures, including trips throughout Europe (trips to Greece, Hungary, Germany, Netherlands), and it only let us down a couple of times. It was also the car we took our daughter home in from the hospital when she was born. We will probably keep it forver.
    2. 2001 Seat Leon 1.6 petrol (silver) - bought the car in Germany in 2013, when it had 120k km on the clock, and drove it back to Romania. We kept it for 4 years, in which it only covered 20k km. A decent, reliable city car, but horrendous fuel economy for such a small engine (I was getting 12 l/ 100 km in the city). I don't really miss it.
    3. 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S auto (Zambezi silver) - it was my dream car for a few years until we decided we could actually afford to have one (not only to buy it) in 2017. It had only one previous owner and had covered 109k km when we bought it. Today it has 199620 km :) So far, it has taken on us on two great international overland trips (2019 to Milos Island, Greece and 2020 around Anatolya), but I use it as my daily and work vehicle (I'm a wildlife biologist). I can't imagine a better vehicle and I can't imagine driving anything else or anything too different... Maybe, in a few years, I will move on to a D4 or the new Defender... Maybe we'll just keep the D3 forever. So far, it has never left us stranded. We were able to drive back from Milos to home (>2000 km) with a punctured front airbag, without issues.
    4. We were also in the US, but only for 6 months in 2018 (Fulbright Fellowship), based in Cleveland, OH, but we needed to get to AZ for the last 1.5 month of our stay. During the first months in Cleveland, we bought the cheapest Walmart camping gear and went to Florida (all the way to Key West) for two adventures (12 and 14 days) with rental cars (Nissan Sentara and Nissan Altima). Finally, we bought a 2004 Saturn Vue (green) with the 2.2l 4 cylinder, front wheel drive, and the 5 speed manual gearbox. Although ugly on the outside and cheaply built on the inside, it was a brilliant, very practical crossover. We just made a few minor repairs to it (a wheel bearing, new brake pads and sway bar links) and we first drove to Niagara Falls. Then, we went on an epic 17 day, 8000 km trip, from Cleveland to the Pacific in CA and from there to southern AZ, camping most of the time (Rocky Mts, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, Mojave, Seqoia, to name the most relevant national parks/ forests we went through). Mind you, we were also traveling with our 1.5 year old daughter :D
In total, we put 17000 km on the car, before selling it for 1000$ one day before we flew back home. We had spent 2400$ taxes included on the car and had no real issues during our epic trip. Check engine light came on in Nevada, but probably due to some bad fuel.
    Take care!

@@Vera_and_Christian Christian & Vera: I will really really recommend you to drive to Romania and experience the Carpathians. It's the last most untouched piece of land in Europe. People are super friendly, and lot's of chances to both drive the Disco2 and using your mountain bikes. My wife are from Romania, and we're there one or two times per year. Right now, there are way too many bears and recently also wolves, so take care. I've met them very close up in person too often. I climb mountains there with friends and btw. I also ride my an mtb.
What a nice video down memory lane. I started riding motorcycles at 17, ups 18, and still do. Cars came later, when I met my wife. We only had a few cars and motorcycles, but I absolutely love our Laverda SFC1000 and our Lotus Esprit, which both are very emotional and demands that you make an effort to get the ost out of it. And it returns with so much passion and driving performance, back to you. And both of them never fail to make you turn your head and take a last look at them, when you get back home. We had many good experienced in and on both. But also very much our "new" car which we bought in a rain and snow storm last December, right before the heavy snow this year set in: our Freelander 2, 3,2L straight six. I am constantly working on it to fix and service all kinds of things, and it's soon ready to travel. None of them ever broke down and left us stranded.
Regarding Romania: the Transfagarasan is famous (be there early in the morning), but Transalpina is better and nicer. And many many good steep rocky back roads to travel as well, and visiting monasteries, and so many secret beautiful spots, both Winter and Summer.
      Kind regards,
      Jacques

I agree with you guys on everything you say. Had the Merc.estate C class also but soulless and boring. Have owned a series of Discos from the 1 to the 3. Travelled across Africa overland East to West and back, some 9800Kms in a Disco3 over 4 weeks. without issue. Back in the UK in 2017 we bought a brand new Discovery Sport but just missed the Disco3, we sold the Disco Sport and last year bought another Discovery 3 HSE, no going back. What other car has seven seats, S Class Mercedes ride and comfort, has the load space of a small van and can overland Southern Africa. Yes emotional attachment is a word you used with your first car, until you get a Disco3, at times it can be a love hate relationship, but the current one is all love.

      @shaunbava1801 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Vera_and_Christian the sport is not the best, it's gotten a lot better since the refresh but it is not the same car. It is basically the Freelander replacement, it's an improved Freelander, a good car but not in the same class. I had the Disco 5 until I got a buyback from LRNA. It was the most luxurious disco, more like a Range Rover, very well mannered but a very different car, good utility but not the same feel still quite good off the road but different. Build quality and electronics were problematic to say the least, it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. The 3 has been really solid though that 06-09 time frame with the 4.4 V8 represents the most reliable powertrain LR has ever used.

Sandy (the white landy) our 2010 LR4 is the best car we've ever owned. Its not the fastest, its doesn't have the best fuel economy, it can be annoyingly frustrating at times, but its completed everything we've thrown at it, and never let us down. I drove it down the east coast one winter when 10 states had all declared states of emergency due to a massive winter nor'easter - winter storm Jonas iirc; this was to run a program for the AEE in Delaware, which was surprisingly not cancelled, and during the course of the program I found out the reason why it wasn't cancelled - a free bar lol. But driving through miles of unplowed interstate, dodging stuck plow trucks and downed trees, I never felt more secure. Sandy got me to the venue and back with ease, even though that lake effects snow was over 24" deep in places.

    Great video!
We had a Durango. Honestly our Durango got much better mileage than our LR3. We use sometimes 18-20L/100km when offroad in our LR3.
You can't beat the sound of a V8. Growing up I always had Chevrolet V8s. 5.7s, 7.4s you name it. Our Durango had the 5.2 V8.
Most recently we have had a BMW 540 with the V8, our Range rover HSE, and our LR3, both with the Jaguar 4.4. Love the Jag engine.
Also have a supercharged Mini Cooper S, Bmw X5 diesel, and we still have our old Discovery 1. Our Land Rovers are our favourites hands down. It's about emotion, and the Rovers take us on great adventures!!
You guys should do a video of how you met.

Car in the garage saved the house - kept the tree trunk from falling all the way to the floor and prevented the branches from slicing through the top floor of the house. Got the Disco 4 three weeks after the tree accident. Disco 4 was better and nicer to drive than Disco 3 and more refined, LR sorted out many of the 3's shortcomings. Gawd I miss that Disco 4...

I had a Porsche when I lived in Germany but I sold it to buy a Range Rover and so far I've had 6 Range Rovers (plus 4 Discovery's and even a Haflinger) BUT I do have to say that the LR3 we bought as a sort of work vehicle 4 weeks ago is already becoming my favorite vehicle. So I've been driving for 50yrs and I've had 4x4's for at 45 of them, Mostly LR, but other stuff in between. 40yrs ago I had a RR classic which I kept for around 10yrs, until the price of petrol got too silly. I loved the old thing but it had to go. I had a couple of Disco1's which we're probably my most practical LR's and as I've told you before I currently have an 18yr old RR L322, which I've now had for 5yrs & I still love it. For a long time I lusted after a Delta Integrale Evo but never got one. But my fave car of all time which I also had for 10yrs was a 1983 ur quattro, I loved that thing & wish I still had it now, it was amazing to drive around Yorkshire's country lane making every trip an adventure. Thanks for making me think about it once again. 👍

What about the disco you with an extended warranty and none of that cost me any extra money. But after the first two or three years it was flawless! I did 75,000 miles from new in a D3 then the same in a D4 and was amazed at how much better the D4 was. I was lucky with both in that I had very little trouble with either but the D4 just felt better built. For me the Discovery 4 is my best all round car ever. I agree that your first car will always be fondly remembered. My Mini Countryman (estate with real wood!) was an interesting first car for a 6' 2" youth to enjoy the pleasures of female company!
Objectively, my BMW 330d Touring was the best road car I ever had. The performance/fuel consumption was amazing and even not that bad at 130-140mph on regular trips to Nuremberg. It handled well, was quiet and was tastefully styled, pre-Bangle. Uber-competent then but did not quite get under my skin like the Discoveries

I discovered your channel by accident. Love the contents. Loving LR cars is a diagnosis - who in their right mind would love cars that are quirky, hard to fix and expensive to fix and run?
I am on my 3rd LR - had a LR3 (Disco 3), LR 4 (Disco 4) in Canada and now have a RR Sport in Europe. Funny part was that my well-maintained, like-new LR4 was not allowed to be brought to EU because it was "too old" and I had to buy RR Sport of the same age once in EU, which I am currently bringing up to my OCD-induced standards.
LRs are quirky, but once you had one, you're sort of addicted. You learn identify faults, because quite often, the car tells you fault is caused one thing and you discover (and later know for sure) that it is an entirely different thing causing problems -- as identified in your videos quite often.
Keep up the good work. I'll be watching LOL...

@@Vera_and_Christian V8 is always nice. RRS is nice, but I liked the Disco 4 much better - much greater versatility of everything past the front seat row and driving behavior almost identical to RRS despite its greater height. More room, too. Unfortunately, my EU - version RRS is a TDV6, with 245hp, my Disco 4 was 375hp V8 gasoline (petrol) - no turbo to give you trouble. Quite a difference in ooomph of the car plus all additional items to take care with diesel engines - EGRs, DPFs, etc. Diesel LRs were not even imported to North America (at least I've never met one). Now I can see why.

I can't see us ever being without our Discovery.

The D3 is the most comfortable for long rides and is almost as spacious as a van. Small drawback on the fuel economy, but honestly, I don't care anymore when I can have a sturdy brick with lots of space that will go almost everywhere. The only thing you really need is a good diagnostic tool, because this car has definitely some kind of a soul.

Many thanks for your prompt response. I'm a little confused by your answer but I'm sure that's down to my lack of car knowledge.
My question was more about when you talk about the Dodge Durango having fuel consumption whilst off-roading of 'about 5 miles per gallon' - just to clarify are you talking about a US gallon (c. 3.8l) or a UK (imperial) gallon (c.4.5l) - I'm assuming you are referring to American gallons (as you drove this car in the US), but then again, you often refer to things in British-English not American-English (eg bonnet as opposed to hood, boot as opposed to trunk)...

@@alexshapley8331 He refers to US gallons. We only just started using British English words when we started our TH-cam channel, driving and fixing British cars. We got so many comments when phrasing something not the proper Britis way. 😅 Now a days we only get corrected by our British viewers when Christian says Aluminum, instead of Aluminium. 😅 If we ever buy a Robicon and ditch the Land Rovers, we will be refering to the hood again 😃👍. But I don't think that will happen soon.🙋‍♀️ Vera

The Disco 3 was the best car I ever had, until I got a D4.
I'd had 3 previous Disco 1, a RRC and a P38 as well as many other cars over the years. It's really a tie between the D3 and the D4, because the 8 speed in the D4 is really good, and the 6 speed in the D3 isn't so good, but I prefer the D3 interior. the Land Rover L319 is the best car I've ever had.

@@Vera_and_Christian Yes, I commented on that too. I knew he would eventually get to the D4. The L319 model is both the D3 and the D4. The D4 is really a D3 facelift, they're basically the same car. I recall Christian making a similar comment.

A Discovery is like having a friendly relative, a lot of give and take. At the moment, it is a lot of give- I have to do all the giving. Ha, Ha. Gpx

Oh that is too bad. I am having such a great time with mine. It is worth every single penny we invest and all the hard work. Alone, when I look outside the window and he is standing there, waiting to be taken out, or fixed. 😅 Even our son Philipp thinks we have the coolest car. Evenso he misses Christian's Challenger😀🙋‍♀️Vera

Having owned your discovery 4 now for a while, Would you say this discovery 3 is still your favourite or does the discovery 4 take its place as the best? Would love to hear your option as I’m looking to buy a 3 or a 4 soon, Thanks.

It depends on many factors and we made many videos about it. I prefer the LR3. But the SDV6 with the HP8 of the LR4 changes everything. You drive it once, you want to have it. V8 is not affordable in Germany or we would have it. Christian

What is it about Land Rover, my grandfather had the hold version of the defender if I'm not mistaken it as series 1, my father had 1 Defender 1 Discovery a Discovery II and the last one is Range Rover Vogue, and now i have a Discovery 3

It is my best 4x4 by far (lol) but not the best ever car, that was a Lexus LS400 over my 10 years of ownership that was the most reliable, cost me the least, and actually sold for more than I paid.

Interesting story - thanks. What was that castlt Vera was photographing? Was it Würzburg?
My very first carr was an Austin A40 Somerset which was almost as old as I was when I bought it. I now drive a Mk.II Nissan X-Trail, but am planning to swap it for a Discovery 4 shortly (don't like the Discovery 5) if I can.

      Hello John,
Discovery 4 is currently going up in price over here in Germany. It will not be as reliable as an X-Trail but who cares...

@@Vera_and_Christian Thanks - though the X-Trail went bang in Germany last year and I was stuck in Aschaffenburg for a week while they fixed it and had a €2,500 bill :-(. And they stopped the X-Trail a few years before the Disco 4 and my theory on the later Disco 4 is that at least LR would have fixed most of the problems that could go wrong - at least that's my hope - and you say how much you love your Disco 3... I guess you are around Darmstadt as I keep seeing vehicles with a "DA" plate - I was there some years ago sorting out the audio on the visitor attraction that they were building at the Opel factory.
