I share your immense appreciation for The Doors. I'm an old guy and saw them live in New York City in the late 60s. I also have a large Doors collection including the AP double 45 and completely agree with your review of it. I was a bit skeptical about the UHQR since I have not had a good experience with other albums on it, even have sent some back. I have been following your channel and occasionally have ordered records from you and almost always agree with your opinion. This review has helped me decide to avoid it and I thank you very much for the details and your honesty. Thanks again Mike from the IN Groove.
Don’t avoid. There are other views out there. To me this UHQR really cleaned up the slightly overblown 45. I love the 45 but Bernie got much closer to the clarity of the tape if you ask me. I can provide a DSD rip if that would help you.
We’re entering a delicate time in civilization where our collective consciousness is such that we are all more likely to appreciate honesty over a pandering lie which we’ve become so ultra scrutinous of, and even Chad would prefer his vassals to speak their mind than curtsy to the king
Mike - from a fellow Doors fan like you, I love hearing you talk about your love for The Doors. They're a band that I feel still do not get the love and respect they truly deserve. No other band before or since has ever blended all the genres and musical/literary influences like The Doors did. Simply put; there will never be another band like The Doors.
Thank you for your honest review. Having the 45RPM I was on the fence on this thing. I HATE DOUBLE DIPPING but I love the album. I was waiting for YOUR review because you know what you're talking about. Other "audiophiles" and I use that term very loosely don't offer REAL reviews. They just say they like how the the pressing sounds. I think 99% of the audiophiles on TH-cam have NO idea what they are talking about, and only think they are audiophiles. You're the real deal!
The UHQR is the epitome of clarity. I did back and forth with the A45. UHQR is better to me. The “realness” of the instruments is better to me. Mike is used to his 45 for 9 years. Don’t count this UHQR out. The A45 is louder for sure and harder edges. Bernie did soften it up. But it sounds more real when he softens it up. Doug cut it hotter and as a result over does some of the instruments. The drums sound more real on this UHQR. Different strokes for different folks. I think you need both. Jim’s voice is so sultry and silky smooth. Amazing!!!
I was a senior when L A Woman came out!! It’s their best overall!! But I’m a doors fan who collects all of their stuff!! My first pressing Electra lp still sounds killer! That’s why most people love this album!! Killer production! Great work!! 🎉🎉
I'm all about these AP 45s. I'm not too lazy to change a record. Definitely sticking with the 45rpm. Amazing release. I am not interested in box sets or big box releases. I just don't have the room. But thinking of an album that desperately needs a 2 lp 45, Born In The USA. That album is crammed on a single vinyl. I'd love Springsteen catalog to get 45 treatment but especially that one.
Thanks Mike as always. I bought all the Doors AS 45 rpms when they came out - fantastic. Whenever I have people over - one of the songs I like to start out the evening with is Rider’s On The Storm. Absolutely demo quality. Love when the thunder clap culminates, a brief pause then the music starts up again. Gets me every time. The RSD is a nice spin. Looks like I’lll give it another spin tonight, thank you I did double dip on the Bill Evans UHQRs and they do nuance things - although if you have the AP box you are there
Any doors fan needs both. This UHQR sounds amazing. Don’t let mikes review fool you. The UHQR has a more balanced soundstage without being blown out by Jim’s voice.
Mike’s love of this LP and the details of it as he outlined here, especially regarding the instrumentation, certainly represents a more engaging and expectant perspective, only enhanced by the awesome system he has at his disposal. Although my experience didn’t discern some of the larger gaps Mike identified in his mind, I certainly agree the 2x45 is a fabulous sounding work, especially for $60. As always, different people/hearing, different equipment and different rooms make a difference. Add to that “different expectations” when we know a record as well as Mike knows LA Woman. Thanks Mike as I will now listen more intently for some of those well explained instrumental marvels you pointed out in this video!
I love this record too but not as passionately as you by the looks of it! I have both the AP UHQR and the 45. The 45 is excellent and and to me sounds brighter and more “HiFi”. After a few listens going back and forwards between them, I must say I do prefer to listen to the UHQR which really draws me in to the performance. To me, it’s more engaging and the presentation especially with Jim’s vocals and the separation of the instruments is more organic and musical. They are clearly different and preferences will vary between individuals I think.
Thanks for the review Mike. I have the AP 45 RPM and it’s spectacular. No need to buy this one which I wasn’t going to do anyway but your review put a nail in the coffin.
Nice picture of you with Ray and Robbie. You are correct in that Ray was definitely the Sound of the Doors. As you Doors was my number one as band with Jimi Hendrix as a solo.
I honestly love the UHQR. While less spacious, there is more cohesion and overall aggressiveness to my ears that I am totally digging. I prefer over the 45.
I purchased the entire set of 6 Analogue Productions 45rpm Doors titles a couple years ago, when they all came back into stock at the same time. I don't regret that decision one bit. Fantastic, all of them.
Mike, I get your view. Doors are my favorite too since I was 11 as well. But at least on my equipment the 45RPM seems a little too hot. The Bernie cut sounds way more real to me. The instruments have much more clarity than the Doug Sax 45. This 33 is my go to now. I am not sure what you mean by the organ is in the background. It’s omnipresent. I appreciate the bass coming forward a little. If you want the best sounding version to me….its the current UHQR. The noise floor is better….and it really helps separate the instruments. Amazing! The A45 is cut louder with not as much head room. The UHQR has much more headroom and feels more airy. The drums kick like real and the organ is there. I think in the Sax the voice is pulled way up front…. I love Jim’s voice but the Bernie definitely features all the instruments. I like this “balanced” approach in this case. I enjoy hearing all the instruments with more air in between . The A45 is cut louder for sure. Turn the UHQR up! More headroom!!!!
Reading your comment makes me wonder why only minority mention that upper hot voice and some says guitar sound of 45rpm cut. You are the 2nd person who compared both and found UHQR better that I have seen so far. Another fella found UHQR more involving and musical, at least this was mentioned as one of the reasons. Also have read same been mentioned on Hoffman forum from 2020, where some folks even sold their AP 45rpm and replaced with much cheaper, but to them better sounding version. Why? Same problem you stated. I like to get this record and after reading so many comments that 45rpm is one to buy almost ordered one, but now not sure. Whichever way, thank you for your honest opinion mate!
@@jabensergei welcome. I think the UHQR feels more real and less bombastic. Bombastic is good on some days. But the UHQR just seems to allow all the instruments to work together. The 45 is a good cut but to me the 45 is just well…more musical/pleasing. But different strokes for different folks.
@revelry1969 Hi, thx for your reply! Regarding involving and musical I was talking about UHQR where 45rpm is more upper detailed and clear, at least according to fella I was referring to. Cheers!
This is making me feel better about choosing the 45 over the UHQR. For me, the issue was the price. I assumed with the 45, I was going to get a great-sounding record, but that I was probably getting the lesser version of the two. I am glad to know this isn't necessarily the case!
I just listened to the 33 and 45 again and to me the albums are different mostly because of the heavier bass on the 45 while the 33 is more articulate perhaps forward. To me they complement each other. Listen to Jim’s voice especially on LA woman or Cars hiss by my window and you’ll see this.
I really like the 50th Anniversary LP box Version. They have done some processing to it, and it has what I would describe as a very black background which I like better than the one in my 45 RPM doors set. Partial to the Doors, as it was my first Rock concert. But my favorite is Morrison Hotel, which I also have in a Japanese pressing and my original domestic pressing.
Mike, your passion for this album has always been on display. Never more so than here. Not going with the herd, and forging your own way. Bottom line for me, I guess I'll stay with 45 rpm and spend my money on different albums, like another Beatles Revolver , my favorite album of all time. Kudos Mike, honesty is the best policy.
The new UHQR had 2 plays and for me it was just not right. Thanks Mike for actually pinpointing what I wasn't hearing. Sold it immediately and spun the 45. The smile returned
off topic....I have that same withdrawn album cover of 8 Way Santa.....I am in Australia and bought my copy from WATERFRONT RECORDS on their own WATERFRONT Label.....see thru red vinyl........I love L A WOMAN.........Riders on the Storm is the perfect driving song IMO
My biggest issue with the new box is moving forward keeping subsequent titles in alphabetical order will mean they don’t match. Should’ve stayed committed to the original aesthetic. Luckily I had the 45, so that plus the different box made it an easy pass.
Well Mike join the club I haven't read a review about this record where anybody did like The sound compared to the 45 RPM. Now personally I don't have FOMO I recently bought 2 Rhino Hi-Fi records that weren't better than The ones I had in my collection and obviously I have the the two LP45 RPM version that I bought the week came out which I think sounds utterly fantastic. even if the UHQR was a little bit better The only thing I'm missing out on is spending $150 bucks and it turns out, some Fidelity as well. Thanks for the review appreciate it. How can it be called a ultra high quality record when it's not as good as the previous release from acoustic sounds. And I agree Ray manzara is so good, I love his keyboards. Great sound great musicianship. Also Mike don't worry about what other people hear on a record. we're here for your opinion you can't help the way you hear the record that's what we want to know. What I've done my videos in the past I didn't watch anybody else's video or have any clue about what other people thought about the record I just listen to it and gave my opinion pretty easy.
When this UHQR was announced, I played the AP 45 RPM and listened in awe to it, and I knew right then that I already had the best version. No UHQR of this one for me, and I hope Chad does not do all the Doors albums this way, as there are many more options out there that would entice me. Cheers
Hey Mike! I remember when my brother and I visited your store last year. You put on that Doors debut album remaster that went for $100. I thought it sounded good, but you lifted the needle right in the middle of the organ intro, you were so peeved at how it sounded!😂 Well, at least I enjoyed your LA Woman vinyl collection at the end of the video!🤣
Hi Mike, if you leave out the dynamics and detail, do you find UHQR sound more involving and musical than say 45rpm? In some review been mentioned that 45rpm, especially with vocal and guitar, can sound edgy or something. Any thoughts? Further, you says that if you are 33rpm person this UHQR is the best available, correct me if I am wrong please. However, on recent live streaming where you where a part of, I believe you said that no way this UHQR beat up the original. Would you be so kind to explain please. I am simply confused what original pressings you refferening to and how come this UHQR is the best 33rpm available then? Thx for your valuvable and honest impressions!
Always leave it to the mob for the ugliness to come out. Mike and Chad want nothing more than mutual fortuity yet the people have to contextualize this as if it’s an act of war
The UHQR is better to me. Don’t let this review fool you. This sounds amazing. I do back to back as well. Bernie got a lot more clarity here. Mike is used to the other one since 2015. The instruments sound far more “real” to me. For any real Doors fan you need both. Maybe Mike will give you his or sell it to you for a deal.
Michael your on point 👉 45-RPM Door's master source tapes cut by "Doug Sax" is that good!! This is a very detailed reference Audiophile record... I find my UHQR are sometimes to far away from the band's conception soundstage... Being Audiophile we own multiple copies of pressings, dramatic changes are not always necessary.... I've bought my last UHQR until Michael says otherwise ❤
Great video Mike. Too much change can really lose the soul of a great record. Would love you to compare an original US From Elvis In Memphis to the Mofi 45rpm set released recently
I am glad that towards the end you *qualified* your comment by saying this UHQR is the best of *the currently available* 33⅓ rpm editions because it is certainly not the best sounding 33⅓ rpm. That distinction would have to go to the absolutely stunning DCC, which if I am remembering correctly, you were quite fond of and called it your "go to" 33 copy - which is not odd because many think the DCC is the best sounding edition, period. Myself included. Even bettering the otherwise excellent AP 45rpm. [ UPDATE ] I've have just re-watched your original L.A. Woman shootout video from 2018 and I was correct. You had picked the DCC as the BEST sounding version short of the 45rpm. _______________ Quote from your 2018 video: "...This is the 1999 pressing mastered by Steve Hoffman. This is a great sounding pressing of this record. It sounds nothing like the 30 copies of LA Woman I listened to while making this video, but the bass is nice and tight and John Densmore drum kit sounds like it's in the living room with you. The cymbals have a shimmer to them that is present in my original Pitman pressing but with all the missing bottom end. But it almost sound like you're listening to a remix of the album. It has a very audiophile sound to it. It sounds too polished *but it's still my go to 33 pressing.*" End quote _______________ So what's the deal? You totally glossed over saying anything about the DCC when you were thumbing through the stack of the various pressings! 🤔 You would think that *minimally* since the DCC was your previous *go to* 33⅓ pressing that you would at least mention it or award it an honorable mention! But no. Just crickets when thumbing past it. WTH? Which leads me to believe you did not do a proper "head-to-head" comparison of your top two 33⅓ pressings (DCC vs UHQR). Yet you bestow the new UHQR - an edition which you are clearly not enamored with - the title of "The best 33⅓ edition". Wait, what? Well, o-k, technically it may be the best 33⅓ *currently available*. Cheers! Oz LTBS
It should have been known in the room when the uhqr was being made that Mike from The In Groove is going to be the most trusted voice on this particular album
I think you are going down the rabbit hole on this. I do agree that 45RPM is the best sounding. I have played both (45RPM and 33RPM)...45RPM sounds is the best on my system. One thing to consider is the persons Hi-Fi system..... I don't have a high end system. It is decent system I think!
It's also my favorite album even if light my fire and the end are their best songs but I get what you mean by how it should sound and I agree after one session, it probably won't be my favorite pressing, but I'm very glad I got it anyway because it does sound different and my speakers are good at playing that mid-range stuff so I found it quite interesting to be honest, just like I can't also live without the Perception dvd audio box set which is pretty underrated... On my Oppo player, it really sounded divine but my Oppo just blew up after 11 yrs...I guess it depends on the mood... But yes the 45 will still be the best sound after listening to these songs since 1993 personally...
The AP45 of this is the best rock record I've ever heard in terms of audio quality. The only thing the UHQR could be that people would like over the 45 is "different". There might be some people who prefer the signature of the UHQR, but I'm with Mike in that the AP45 represents both the best fidelity and the most traditional Doors sounding record available.
Interesting to hear this - - though I'm no audiophile, even though I don't know what UHQR stands for & don't want to know, even though I'm not interested in 'upgrading' - - still & all, interesting review.
The 45 AP version is now conveniently sold out on acoustic sounds😂 Glad I picked up my copy last year for 60! Prices are already soaring on the secondary market...
This is really a good review and assessment of the LA Woman UHQR album. 👍👍👍 I haven't done a shootout between the Sax 45 rpm and the Grundman UHQR, so I can't comment about which one I prefer. I really like what I've heard from the UHQR. If I wanted to hear LA Woman on 33 1/3 rpm, this would be my go to version. One thing I love about the 45 rpm is the fact that Doug Sax used his tube electronics mastering process made famous from the Sheffield Lab days and The Mastering Lab. This could be part of what you're picking up on, and I fully get where you're coming from. It's all a pretty subjective thing, since people have their own standards for what sounds the best to them. 👍💖🎸😎
The UHQR is amazing. The 45 is brash with Jim’s vocal berating you the whole time. I like the 45 but this 33 beats the 45 on clarity and balancing the soundstage. To me you can hear all the instruments much better and they sound more real. The A45 is a bit brash to me and is cut louder. The UHQR has headroom and you can turn it up and loud! The a45 becomes fatiguing much sooner with the forward voice. I want to hear the whole band and this UHQR does. Bravo Bernie! Get both!
@@revelry1969 I agree. Both records are worth having for the dedicated fan of The Doors. I very much like the UHQR for the very reasons you stated, but the 45 rpm version is excellent too. For a casual listener of The Doors, one or the other based on taste may be enough. 👍👍👍
Disagree. Have the 45 and this as well as an og and the Perception DVD. Love this release on my mid range system. This can be cranked way up without any distortion or surface noise. The 45s will probably be around forever but once these are gone you are screwed royally if you miss out. They won't last long
I totally got the idea this wouldnt be better from the 45 from the release video. I was very impressed with/admired chad's honesty when he said that it (paraphrasing) 'smoked an original but the 45 wasnt as easy to smoke' basically saying this was intended to be the best 33 and that alone. I still think this release is purely intended for only the most devoted haters of 45 rpm titles with how incredible the 45 sounds. I really liked the video and your thoughts. Sick picture of you with ray and robbie!
Have you heard the 5.1 surround sound version that was released probably 20 years ago? I actually found a download of it and used it to test my dvd burning capabilities and WOW! Sounded incredibly cool. You could hear feet shuffling in the studio. Sounded like you were in the room with them. I’m not sure how preferable that is but it was an amazing experience that I wish I could listen again but it seems to have vanished.
Great review, Mike! I have the AP 45 RPM and SACD, they both sound really good. What's your stand on the AP SACD? I know you're more inclined to analog sources but a good DAC, especially R2Rs, provide the best sound from SACDs for a more analog-like enjoyment. ¡Salud!
Man, after the review it’s time to get the double 45rpm before it gets out of stock, getting both LA Women and The Doors for less than the UHQR is a no brainer.
Mike, where did you get that beautiful Beatles photo behind you? Also did you happen to catch my interviews with John and Robby? If not I invite you to and I'd love to hear what you think.
Mike’s a decent guy as far as his authenticity and *generally* clear communication, but I really get a kick out of his glitches. “Don’t let those people talk you out of making a bad decision” / Calling the yellow insert white like twice as he’s looking at it 🤷🏼♂️
I really agree with you on this one. I was expecting a lot from the UHQR - based on early reviews. But it was disappointing and in my opinion it was flat (as you say) and way behind the AP 45. Very surprised anyone could rank this ahead of the AP 45.
Well, Some do. The A45 is brash and the voice is so far forward it drowns out all the other instruments. Bernie got the balance right and now they aren’t stepping on each other. This is a wonderful balanced soundstage with better clarity. You need both if you are real Doors fan. Note: turn up the UHQR. It is cut at lower level allowing more head room and clarity. I think Mike just prefers the brash forward voice and organ. The UHQR does not lack organ or voice it’s just not brash.
@@vinyl_valhalla see what you think. It sounds very vibrant to me. I will keep both as they are both good. But the 45 is a little more raucous. Some may prefer that (and I may on some days too). But Bernie did really add some space and depth to the soundstage. It’s definitely more hifi. Made me feel like I was in the room. The A45 has been the standard. I get it. It’s $60 and is a good cut. But the UHQR to me is just so dang clean and balanced without flattening the soundstage. Love hearing all the little details.
@@GordonPyzik hi, thanks. I must say the 33 UHQR is growing on me. I think I will also get the new rhino set coming out. Are you guys planning to get that as well?
It was never going to be as good as the 45rpm... It's a fair review in my opinion. But the cost makes it not worth it, when you can get the 45 for half the price
Yea, from a cost perspective the 45 is a deal but to me the UHQR sounds better. It is more balanced and doesn’t blow you out with Jim’s voice. I wanna hear the whole band
I'm hearing a lot of personal preference in Mike's review. If you heard them, you might have a different opinion as I do. I like both for different reasons.
There is nothing more valuable in these reviews than HONESTY. Thank you Mike.

Thanks Mike ✌️ Edit: DAMN! love seeing all those different pressings
I was a senior in high school when LA woman was released. The 45 is amazing. Appreciate your opinion Mike.
Brutally Honest!! Love it!! Thank you, we need more truth, just give me some truth!!
I just listened to the 33 and 45 again and to me the albums are different mostly because of the heavier bass on the 45 while the 33 is more articulate perhaps forward. To me they complement each other. Listen to Jim’s voice especially on LA woman or Cars hiss by my window and you’ll see this.
I agree with you. Most big fans of The Doors would love to have this UHQR.
I really like the 50th Anniversary LP box Version. They have done some processing to it, and it has what I would describe as a very black background which I like better than the one in my 45 RPM doors set. Partial to the Doors, as it was my first Rock concert. But my favorite is
Morrison Hotel, which I also have in a Japanese pressing and my original domestic pressing.
Thank you for your honesty and candor, Mike "The In Groove."
Thank you Mike!
off topic....I have that same withdrawn album cover of 8 Way Santa.....I am in Australia and bought my copy from WATERFRONT RECORDS on their own WATERFRONT Label.....see thru red vinyl........I love L A WOMAN.........Riders on the Storm is the perfect driving song IMO
My biggest issue with the new box is moving forward keeping subsequent titles in alphabetical order will mean they don’t match. Should’ve stayed committed to the original aesthetic. Luckily I had the 45, so that plus the different box made it an easy pass.
Was I the only one distracted by the Gwen Stefani poster? 😂 Anyways, great review, Mike!
My favorite band since 1967.
I have the 45 RPM LA woman but it has a slight Warp do you fix warped records?
Great review!
Excellent!! 💯💯💯
People this is good UHQR. Its clearer and more focused than Aja. And im an OG kinda guy
LA woman - Sunday afternoon -
Great review - thanks Mike
Thanx Mike
I appreciate your honesty. You declared the emperor has no clothes.
Chad has no clothes...??!!! 😲
For any real
Doors fan you need both. Maybe Mike will give you his or sell it to you for a deal.
Excellent overview and detailed review. ✌🏻
Michael your on point 👉
45-RPM Door's master source tapes cut by "Doug Sax" is that good!!
My first record from the band i buy it in 91 the doors in concert 3xLP German press
only one R in FamiliaR...but love your reviews!
You can always count on Mike to give an honest Doors review. I try to find his thoughts and opinions on Doors releases, before buying.
Mike sure does love LA Woman.
[ UPDATE ]
I've have just re-watched your original L.A. Woman shootout video from 2018 and I was correct. You had picked the DCC as the BEST sounding version short of the 45rpm.
_______________
Quote from your 2018 video:
"...This is the 1999 pressing mastered by Steve Hoffman.
It sounds too polished *but it's still my go to 33 pressing.*"
End quote
_______________
So what's the deal?
Cheers!

I still prefer 331/3
Thank You.
What are your other 4 demo disks?
great question. 🎉
I miss the old box
11:00 to hear him talk about the sound of the UHQR
I wonder how DCC compares to the UHQR given the mix and 33rpm
Oh wow, you looked good with hair!
Interesting to hear this - - though I'm no audiophile, even though I don't know what UHQR stands for & don't want to know, even though I'm not interested in 'upgrading' - - still & all, interesting review.
Any chance Mike of a pressings shootout of Funhouse pressings vs. the new ERC Funhouse pressing?
I don’t think Mike likes the stooges or has all the relevant pressings to do one…
I skipped this UHQR as I already have the AP 45, happy I saved my money.
It's a Tail O' The Pup location now.
The 45 AP version is now conveniently sold out on acoustic sounds😂 Glad I picked up my copy last year for 60! Prices are already soaring on the secondary market...
It will be back.
Pretty much mirrors the review of Eric Pathi. Shills be damned!!! 🤣
The sound quality of 45 rpm discs trumps the inconvenience of getting up multiple times to flip the record.
Why don't the Bring Out a Ultratape Version Out of this Album?
I'm relatively new to this stuff but it feels like all those fancy labels just reisssue the same few records over and over again.
You might not sing like Jim, but at least you look like him!
¡Salud!
Shots fired.
Where is your new Technics turntable? :/
Man, after the review it’s time to get the double 45rpm before it gets out of stock, getting both LA Women and The Doors for less than the UHQR is a no brainer.
Ahhh Mike now you know what Tom Port has been saying all these years about “audiophile “ records 😂😂😂
Mike, where did you get that beautiful Beatles photo behind you?
Also did you happen to catch my interviews with John and Robby? If not I invite you to and I'd love to hear what you think.
Have u heard that new release by band called Human Code, great single called Break The Silence! It's so good bro.
TAD's 8 Way Santa in the background.
You need both if you are real
Doors fan. Note: turn up the UHQR. It is cut at lower level allowing more head room and clarity. I think Mike just prefers the brash forward voice and organ. The UHQR does not lack organ or voice it’s just not brash.
@@revelry1969 thanks, I will crank it and listen again! Agreed, you can never have too many versions of this record.
Get the 33. In the future everyone will be trying to get the 33.
You never mentioned that they should have made a 45rpm Uhqr. Why didn’t they. To make more money doing a33.
11 min in, and we start hearing why we're here. Still, Mike is the go to guy for honest analyst.
I'm hearing a lot of personal preference in Mike's review. If you heard them, you might have a different opinion as I do. I like both for different reasons.
