At the worst timings, shoes will always betray you. I will never forget the time where I wore High Heels for a Cosplayball and forgot to bring flat, fancy shoes as a replacement (You are not allowed to wear normal sneakers or anything) and the Heel cracked and snapped off and I just fell down on the dancefloor and had to take the Heels off. In the end, I spent most time of the ball walking and dancing without shoes because I hadn't any other shoes for it. (My dress was long enough so no one could really see my shoes but it was still hella uncomfortable) When we wanted to leave the hall we had to explain to the security why I was not wearing shoes, because you are usually not allowed to walk without shoes on the Ball. But since we were on our way out, it wasn't that much of an issue. I learned my lesson, will never go to any convention ever without a second pair of shoes
I wore a pair of 6 inch heels for Pepper Potts when I was 15 and thought I was invincible. In the end I had to be carried into the local walmart to buy some sandals!

I can imagine Peter Cushing playing Tarkin from Star Wars having a similar story, his costume's military boots were so uncomfortable he swapped to wearing slippers and made sure all his scenes are shot from the waist up.
I've never had that issue and I tend to find high heels more comfortable than flat shoes. But the image of your story kind of reminded me of the time an old knee injury acted up and it just started screaming on the walk back from the convention to the hotel so I was just hobbling along in a cosplay with high heel boots with a thigh high sock that kept continuously flopping down as the hotel was to close to justify getting a ride back.

Oof yeah . . . I made this huge mistake when I cosplayed Ichigo from Darling in the Franxx. The piston uniform from the anime has these heelless-style shoes that I didn't know how the heck I was going to pull off. I very luckily found an Etsy shop that had a 3D printed shoe that was meant for the characters. I tested walking around my carpeted basement in the shoes before the convention and was like, 'Okay, yeah, this will work just fine.' Con day comes and I walk down from the hotel room in these shoes and the moment I hit the hard tile floor, I feel just how slippery these shoes are and am like, 'Oh no, I made a mistake.' I went over to the cosplay repair station and made hot glue treads on the bottoms of the shoes and it helped with slipping, but by the end of the con day, I had huge sores and bruises all over my feet from the few stumbles I did have. I am planning on redoing her next year and am definitely going to go with a more comfortable pair of shoes, rather than exact accuracy because I am NOT reliving that again haha.
Thanks for providing a distraction from my anxiety you made me laugh and geninually smile for the first time in months. I tortured myself on Halloween with uncufertable boots I did not realise at the time we were going to be out as long as we were. I regret my decision very much!
I was so worried your shoes were going to break, especially when you mentioned walking down the stairs. I've had my shoe heel break before and my commuting home usually takes more than an hour, so hobbling around made it seem longer (T . T)
I had the same at a con and ended up getting super glue from a chemist to fix it mid convention 😂 😂 then had to walk home in broken shoes because I too forgot spare flats 😂 Best of luck with your BLM thinggy ♥ you're an amazing human
I have a similar story - 3 and a half day con. Combat boots for most of those and got blisters the one day I wore flats. I've also had a pair of shoes break on me, thankfully it was when I was leaving the con. I have knee problems so I generally have to stick to low heels/flats anyway. but second this soooo much. have your cosplay shoes and stash a comf pair in your bag. for me that tends to be a pair of mary janes - I'm generally cosplaying anime school girls atm so I can generally get away with it. since it adds to the school uniform look.
Wore low healed sandle shoes once to Sakura-con a few years back. Thought "oh these are low enough it will be just fine!." I was wrong and ended up getting blisters on my little toes. Had to borrow shoes from a friend. Never again. From now on I ware comfy shoes to cons don't care if its accurate I just want to be comfortable.
The cosplay shoes I have are mostly thrifted for plain clothes cosplays or regular shoes that i changed to fit the cosplay but the one pair of shoes I have bought specifically for a cosplay off of a cosplay site they are flats that basically feel like I’m walking on the ground with bare feet
Oh man, I would have just yeeted the shoes off by the end of the night to walk home. I’ve had to do that when I doomed myself to be stuck in my Sailor Moon boots. I was like “me being shoeless is the least weird thing pedestrians are gonna see right now” to walk from the center to the parking garage near the con lol I have new SM boots that are comfier for 2020... but ya know, hah.
One time at a convention, the heels of my shoes just decided to break... In the middle of the convention hall. I had spare shoes with me but they were in the bag of a friend.... So I basically needed to get back to said friend to get my shoes.... It should have been 5 minutes of walking to get to them, but it took me about half an hour.... Great times :'D

I used to do heels for cosplays for the accuracy... but then I decided that comfort is more important and I wear flats no matter the cosplay. Even my Sailor Neptune cosplay, instead of teal heels, I got some cute teal flat european-style moccasins from a shop at the local Ren Fest. I've gotten so many compliments on them while in that cosplay and they are super comfortable once the leather is done stretching and no longer needs the straps to be tightened to keep them on. that takes about an hour of wear. One of the straps did betray me on those shoes at a con but I was able to tie the strap back together enough to wear them the rest of the day no problem.
As an up and coming cosplayer myself (I only have cosplayed two different versions of Hatsune Miku genderbent of course since 2016) I wholeheartedly can relate to the shoes thing. One of the Miku's I cosplay has high heel platform boots (Senbonzakura Miku) and while I've gotten used to walking in the aforementioned boots, they can indeed get uncomfortable after a few hours of hobbling around a con. Most of the time I just deal with it and take breaks, take them off to stretch my toes and ankles etc, but I usually try and bring a pair of sneakers to swap into for when I'm not in the mood to cosplay anymore that day, or if my feet have had it. I'm fortunate enough to live in one of my con's city areas (Anime Boston, of which was sadly cancelled for 2020) so like yourself Anya, if I absolutely had to I could go home and fix the situation if it ever would come to that. My only con-like event this year was MaGFest (Music and Gaming Festival) which takes place just south of Washington, D.C., and it was a blast. No one knew that "something" was gonna come and ruin cons for us otaku/nerds etc for the rest of 2020 likely (still holding out for AnimeNYC in November, since NYC is apparently in decent shape at the moment), but yeah. With all that said, yeah I can totally relate to this story and thank you for posting it.
The minute you said you felt off your game first con of the year I completely felt that. First con (and only) of this year I pulled 2 all nighters to try and finish the costumes for me and my group. My boyfriend even came over to help me crunch for the con. The morning of I was so tired, felt sick and for the first time in my life didn’t want to go to the con. I was so defeated that con crunch had bet me, and was stressed knowing I had to compete in the comp. it all worked out in the end, but man I get that feeling. Oh, and my shoes busted on that day too
I was cos-testing Blaze The Cat at Tsukino con and not only was the paint flaking off the shoes, the heels were very painful to walk in and i had no spare pair so I completely feel your pain
I have flate feet so my cosplays are planned around comfy shoes and inserts. Its also why I started to love crossplay(male) cosplays since most of the time they have flat shoes.
When you said that the connecting bus was going to be there in 40 min and the walk home was 20 min, I thought what was going to happen was you would walk home and the bus would still beat you there. That's happened to me one a couple of occasions. Sometimes public transportation sucks.
that sort of happened to me before, so my mom and I were in Orlando for the star wars convention in 2017. we went to this after-party and though we missed the last trolly. which goes up and down the main strip by the convention. a side note this trolly have creepy faces on the fronts of them. SO, we see one of those bikes with the chariot attached to the back so we take that back, now these things bike on the road and at one point i hear a bus behind us and i happened to turn around and I see that creepy face on the trolly. turns out it was the trolly we thought we missed, it ended up passing us at one point and it made it to the stop about a 1 or 2 min before the bike did.
I don’t know if it’s more stupid to keep hobbling on with the shoes on after a con or deciding Fuck It and walking home the handful of blocks in socks. (Which I’ve done too many times, cuz I guess I never learn my lesson)
Not quite the same way, but I've had shoes betray me too. They were comfy, but the straps I had attached to them kept wanting to come off. Took me several attempts to find a way that works lol. Just really sucks having a cosplay come apart during a con, especially if people want pics
That moment when shoes betray you... I had this happen twice while Disneybounding at Disneyland (on the same trip)... On Dapper Day, my most comfy pair of black heels decided to betray me. I was thankful that I had brought an extra pair of shoes with me and they were in my backpack in the locker... except my shoes weren't there. I had left them at the hotel. (That was a very painful day for my feet. LOL) The next day, I was Disneybounding as Flynn Rider and wore my favorite brown boots which have heels, but are super comfortable. I had worn those boots for several RenFaires and knew they would not betray me... by the afternoon I had to swap shoes, they had betrayed me too. xD (At least that day I didn't leave my spare shoes at the hotel.)
Even on my wedding day and honeymoon, I brought a pair of foldable black flats. They take up no space and won't slip off my feet. And they look cute, just a bonus. Love you girl!
I've had cosplay shoes betray me as well, it was at my first convention which was at the local library and I dressed up as a horrible cheap party city wig Mitsuki Bakugou. I decided to wear some beige heel bootie sandal things and I wore them entire 4 or 5 hours there non stop and by the end of the day the part where my toes stuck out had rubbed against my foot so much that it was literally bleeding, yeah not fun. My first convention was a disaster, but at least I made a bunch of new friends.
this was a good one! my worst footwear experience at a convention was one where i wore faun/satyr legs for the entire duration; which involved hooves built on a sock with no other padding for the sole. i essentially walked around barefoot for the entire three days and then couldn't walk the week after lol- i've since learned my lesson for sure!
Shoes are the utter betrayal. My platform heels broke off while roaming around the dealers hall at AX back in 2017. I had chunky platform heels under my Princess Serenity dress. Yeah heels snapped and I fell down on red divider rope . Wasn't fun for the rest of the day. I did not learn my lesson because I had another shoe problem the next year. I wore red converse for my ladybug cosplay. Did not realize that my shoes were uncomfortable because they were new. Did not realize that they made my heels bleed. Dumbass me wore the same shoes for the next day as Sailor Moon... yeah Wasn't fun but hey maybe I'll learn next year
This almost exact same thing happened to me! Except it wasn't in heels, it was in flats. Flats of all things! I had worn the shoes for an entire con day in the past and they were fine - I actually did more walking that day! But when I went to wear them again for a different con, I was walking round to the train station and they cut my heels up like nothing else. I ended up standing on the backs of them throughout the day and wearing them like sandals because I couldn't stand to actually put my feet in them as it hurt so much!
I learned how much heeled boots hurt last year... New cosplay, boots I had never worn before (with the highest heels I had ever worn to a con), thank god I was staying not too far from the convention centre because getting to take those shoes off at the end of the day was heaven.
Stupid tip:if you’re going for a more funny approach to a character and not focusing entirely on being cannon just wear crocs chances are nobody will even notice
My husband is always stressing comfort over "accuracy" at least in areas that technically could be given a little wiggle room and ESPECIALLY when it comes to footwear even though he know and acknowledges and I suppose accepts that 9 times out of 10 I won't follow this piece of advise that I am well aware is a VERY valid piece of advice.
I cannot stress correct shoes enough either. I hadn't been cosplaying long when i made my first mistake. i wore a pair of boots that a friend lent me that turned out to be too narrow. it ended up pinching a nerve and i had to get a cortisone shot as a result. I now have a 500$ pair of custom inserts as well from years of walking on concrete at cons (and work). All caused by shoe betrayals. If the shoes hurt at all, its going to damage your feet in the long run.
There are times in a cosplayer's life where you just have to take the L and call an Uber 😔 Reminds me of the time I went to Dokomi and stupidly planned to wear shoes I'd never worn before for more than a few minutes, so obviously I realized they were too small but not before boarding the tram to the con. I had to hobble my way through the line, we arrived very shortly before our reservation for the maid cafe so no time to look for an alternative, and only after that was I able to find a booth that sold vaguely japanese inspired flip flops that I could then wear for the entire day. Thankfully my dress was floor length so it wasn't too ugly but I sure felt like an idiot!
I have a story about this too! It was a few years ago, and I was wearing my gijinka Morgana (from Persona 5) and I had heels on with thigh high white boot covers. I also forgot to wear socks underneath, which was a terrible mistake. I did bring flat shoes but I didn't want to change into them because they were black instead of white and I was stubborn. I had blisters within the first hour of being at the convention, but stupid me decided that I wanted to suffer. I stayed there for the whole day and changed shoes to walk back to my friends hotel room before we got dinner. Listen to your body! Because I sure didn't and I suffered for it XD
This happened to me a few days ago and I was in flat shoes I was just in pain for no reason but the way you described how you felt that was just a mood
Yes, i did a cosplay of Kai'sa of League of Legends and I was wearing 10 cm high heels for a very long time and they were killing me and i was just so happy that I had my Toms with me. Toms are super light and easy to squish into a bag so 10/10 would recommend.
Ok so for my bloody painter cosplay I couldn't find my black dress shoes so I forced myself to wear jazz shoes and the heel kept digging in to my foot all day while I was trying to not break them cause I needed them for colorgaurd. Plus side was that I could dance in them good and a let up my tolerance for when I wear my tan jazz shoes for my jack frost cosplay. My little sister would die if she went to shrek the musical and had the experience you did. She's been watching it non stop
I wore a pair of those flimsy Ballet Flats, ( the ones they sell at party city) for a day because I was cosplaying Princess Tutu, I had tights on of course But Holy god. You could've sworn it was the clap of an ass cheek because they were so loud. Evey time iI stepped. On top of that they were so tight around my feet I was litterally crying. My feet were in so much pain.
AnyaPanda I had a time my cosplay shoes failed me. I was cosplaying a sexy dark angel while wearing approximately 6" heels (about half of that was platform). These shoes were thong lacing up to knees, the type that wrap around you legs. On my way back to the hotel room, my left shoe went out from under me...the sole completely separated from the top of the shoe. I only had a broke toe nail and some minor bruising thankfully. I call it my fall from grace.
when I use to work a con advertising table in ambassador alley at different cons. I developed a game where I would guess how long the cosplayer had been in their shoes. from the just getting there and the moment of these shoes make the costume amazing. to the these are starting to hurt. to the i can suffer thou this to the shoes in their hands and they are leaving the con floor
My cosplay shoes always kill my feet, I cosplay as Isaac foster, and he has these big clunky boots that don't fit my feet as well as they should, so i get blisters, then I cosplay as L, who *literally* doesn't wear any shoes, i wear invisible shoes (just thin pads that stick to the bottom of my feet) and then I cosplay as Speed-o'-sound Sonic from OPM, I have to wear these thin black water shoes over the morph suit. It's safe to say that my feet hate me 😂 It's all worth it though ❤❤ Amazing memories
It took me 3 years of going to a big con like dragoncon to understand the importance of bringing an extra pair of shoes. I have a pair of boots that I've dubbed my hell boots because walking in them ended up being absolute hell. My feet and ankles just gave up at one point and said 'no more'. And then last year a good comfy pair of boots ended up being totally worn down and broken. Better quality shoes is important too is what I learned from that.
This has happened to me!! I was doing a photoshoot with my friend but it was in a park close to my house, BUT 2e decided to walk to an area around 15 minutes away walking. Right when we got there we realized it was curfew and we had literally 2 minutes yo get home. Our plan was to sprint home since we both are really fast and would be able to make it back if we ran FULL SUPER SPEED!! See this would have been fine if I had like flats on but I had these like chunky pretty high, knee length boots! We weren't very professional so we literally had a camera and our vosplays that we're wearing, so items wouldn't slow us down, BUT MY FRICKIN BOOTS DID!!!!!!!! Once we got to the pavement I just took off my boots and ran LOL! (Pretty sure there were some kids/teens out in the neighborhood that saw two crazy people in costumes taking photos and then running full-superr-speed, one not even wearing shoes... LOL)
Oh I know exactly how she feels like the cosplay shoes when I did cardcaptor Sakura in her fairy costume that she wore in the opening credits the shoes at first we're incredibly comfy how wrong I was throughout the entire convention I was wearing flats because the shoes was feels like it was squeezing my toes even though it's not and it incredibly painful it is very difficult to find the comfiest shoes is firstly when you're walking around all day at Akon you want the shoes to go with the costume
Rothco Jungle Boots in their normal form arent the greatest for traipsing around on solid ground, I had blisters on both feet because of how the toe tread was designed. Thankfully local cobbler was able to put a better toe on them.
Idk if you know what I should do but I have a bit of a dilemma. I wanna get into cosplay, but I have no prior sewing experience. There is a high-rated costume for the character I found on amazon, but it’s almost $60. in your opinion, how much is too much when it comes to buying a costume? I have a couple gift cards so it would probably cost more like $40. would it be easier to try and make a costume and buy a good wig, or buy a good costume and style my own wig?
Not her of course, but as a cosplayer of several years, I think you should eventually learn to sew, as it's good even outside of cosplay! But as long as you're still financially stable afterwards, the price on the cosplay isn't that important to anyone but yourself. Can't say much for wigs unfortunately, happy cosplaying!
One time i brought a friend to a con with me i was experienced in going to cons it was my friends first time going to a con we were keith and lance from voltron legendary defenders and my friend thought it was a good idea to where high heel boots after a couple hours walking around the con my friend forced me to lend them my shoes so through out the con we switched shoes
That sounds almost as bad as the time I decided to wear the 6" heels I had bought the same day for the pride parade, forgetting that 2/3 of the parade route were on cobblestone streets in the old city. 6" stilettoes, brand new, on cobblestones, need I say more?

I was cos-testing Blaze The Cat at Tsukino con and not only was the paint flaking off the shoes, the heels were very painful to walk in and i had no spare pair so I completely feel your pain
I have flate feet so my cosplays are planned around comfy shoes and inserts. Its also why I started to love crossplay(male) cosplays since most of the time they have flat shoes.
The princess of hell who also goes through hell (with her boots)
Ayyyy hahaha! 😎👉🏻
🤣 i havent been to cons so i wouldnt know the struggle but i will find it out soon
OMG I LOVE YOUR BUZZFEeD UNSOLVED SWEATSHIRT:0
LOL)
The next day, I was Disneybounding as Flynn Rider and wore my favorite brown boots which have heels, but are super comfortable.
Came for the shrek musical, stayed for the shrek musical
Yay your real hair 👌😼✨
this was a good one! my worst footwear experience at a convention was one where i wore faun/satyr legs for the entire duration; which involved hooves built on a sock with no other padding for the sole. i essentially walked around barefoot for the entire three days and then couldn't walk the week after lol- i've since learned my lesson for sure!
Omg, so sorry to hear that that happened to you! Love listening to your videos while I play video games, keep up the great work :)
I was in my schools Shrek the musical omg all star was the best experience ever
Atleast I don't have to experience this because I'm gonna make a kenku cosplay.
What a time: The Saga
i have these super cute edgy boots for my keith cosplay and usually they are so comfy but last time they just decided
:) blisters
I just started to explore your channel, I saw Charlie, that was the deal breaker. I now adore you 💛
I have a story about this too!
I Love your BuzzFeed unsolved sweater, where did you get it?
Love your story time vids Anya!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like them! ^.^
I call it my fall from grace.
oh you poor thing
when I use to work a con advertising table in ambassador alley at different cons. I developed a game where I would guess how long the cosplayer had been in their shoes. from the just getting there and the moment of these shoes make the costume amazing. to the these are starting to hurt. to the i can suffer thou this to the shoes in their hands and they are leaving the con floor
I went to the Vancouver con, too. I guess I missed you
My cosplay shoes always kill my feet, I cosplay as Isaac foster, and he has these big clunky boots that don't fit my feet as well as they should, so i get blisters, then I cosplay as L, who *literally* doesn't wear any shoes, i wear invisible shoes (just thin pads that stick to the bottom of my feet) and then I cosplay as Speed-o'-sound Sonic from OPM, I have to wear these thin black water shoes over the morph suit.
At least it didn't take you over a decade to learn that like it did with me! 😅
WHAT- i watched shrek in FINNISH and we didn't sing THIS IS SO UNFAIR >:(
One time i brought a friend to a con with me i was experienced in going to cons it was my friends first time going to a con we were keith and lance from voltron legendary defenders and my friend thought it was a good idea to where high heel boots after a couple hours walking around the con my friend forced me to lend them my shoes so through out the con we switched shoes
YOUR AN ALL STAR GET YOUR GAME ON GO PLAY!!!
That sounds almost as bad as the time I decided to wear the 6" heels I had bought the same day for the pride parade, forgetting that 2/3 of the parade route were on cobblestone streets in the old city. 6" stilettoes, brand new, on cobblestones, need I say more?
I just started cosplaying a month ago and I'm having trouble telling my mom about it. Any tips?
00:47 Hamilton fans sing it with me
And again that buzzfeed unsolved sweater where did you get it?
From their merch store.
I love your videos 🥺💕
Thank you! ;u;
Why not just take of the shoes, I would do that if its not to cold. To be honest, most of the year I dont wear shoes.
Wait have you ever cosplayed a mha character , if you have let me know
