I love when people take 20 steps to try and do something that is kind of pointless (like cutting a bottle! lol) because you learn so much in the process. I've made a few pieces of furniture - when I could have just bought from Ikea - and each one has things I messed up because i didn't know better but I've learned so much about how to join pieces of wood in a sturdy manner and how to customize fit furniture exactly for my specific needs.
few things: if you don't have a glass cutter a file will work, you can use a triangular file or just the corner of a flat file. if you don't care about the top of the glass and don't wanna do the hot/cold thing a hammer will work. the line creates a line where cracks will not propagate, shattering the top will work to get you a bottom. you could also hold the glass at the bottom (with gloves) and shatter the top over the edge of a table (like in the movies when someone breaks a beer bottle to use as a knife, but in reverse)
Yeah you definitely want that bottle to get rocking hot so that there's a shock in temperature difference. It may seem like you have it on fire or heating up for a long period of time but really you a heap that glass until you almost don't want to touch it in that area. But the problem is when you overheat it can cost the glass to shatter entirely ofcourse. Awesome video man thank you.
Compared to other video tutorials, maybe you didn't let the string burn long enough? Theoretically, you should do only one complete score line with a glass cutter. No back and forth. It's supposed to give a cleaner cut. Congratulations on your success! : )
Yeah, mix ice with a little bit of water just enough to let the cubes float, and then at a ton of salt to it as if you were making ice cream. Then let the string burn on there for a few minutes rotating it as you go. The string method produced a not so clean cut most of the time though so you want to go above where you need. That's how I've done it in the past.
Great video. I like the fact that you showed your first attempt which was a failure. That is what happens when you take on new projects. But the best part was your ingenuity and success on the second attempt! Great job. I will do the same.
You had me right up until the end when Crown Maple made an appearance. Beauty glass for the worst whiskey. I am inspired though and will indeed make a few glasses (wife likes the Rosé wine that comes in that bottle).
I have a strange question: Can you somehow reassemble the bottle back together? I mean reseal the broken parts? Would putting something like hot glue on the edges and sealing it back together make it work?
Guys just a tip from a guy who makes glasses like this from recycled bottles, if you have access to a wet saw with a straightedge. Use it instead. It is easier to keep the lines straight and is easy to smooth out with wet sand paper. The score line method only works with round bottles that are a consistent thickness. Square or "unique" shaped bottles separate unevenly. The wetsaw and straightedge method works no mattter what. Ive made full glasses, shot and double shot glasses, and whiskey glasses using it and it never fails
I've liked all of your videos, but this one is the first that I honestly watched 2nd time after it end. It was little that moment when you let us see, damnit! It didn't work, not once, but a few times. It was, what? No cutting, no editing just wtf and kept going. It was great!
nice, this is something i can try myself. Just need to get shopping for a nice bottle and a glass cutter. Man I love your vids, but the only thing I've done myself yet are the bullet cufflinks. But those are amazing too.
This inspire me to try this. Now I need to go hunt for a glass cutter. I'd probably dip the glass in an ice bucket of water and let it sit for a few mins then dunk it in a boiling pot of water and simmer. Alternating between those two. For the 1st technique, I think you probably need to burn longer before putting in cold water and leave it there for longer
I've tried cutting glass with tread and fire method. It didn't work. I was so disappointed. Now I know. He proved that all DIY hacks doesn't work all the time.
Meanwhile... Watching your video sipping fine Tennessee whiskey from a nice whiskey glass I got as a gift. I am getting lit and wondering why this video came up in the suggestions.
Really nice video, man! I feel very inspired to try this out. Gonna have to keep on to some bottles. Also, I think the top of the bottle would make a very nice lamp to hang from the ceiling. :)
Fire and string is the most uncontrollable way to cut a glass bottle. I recommend using a glass cutter and use hot water then shock it with cold water works the best.

Hey guys! Let me know what kind of projects you would like to see next. Best comments will be featured in the next video.
What types of sandpaper did you use in the end? Thank you!!
@@johnbrown6734 any sandpaper will do. In my case it was a sandpaper with an adhesive backing glued to a flat board. I think it was 180 grit

Love hearing your own voice and seeing you work. Also showing us that failure doesn't mean the end.
Looks amazing and waiting to see more!
Hows about letting to heat up for longer than 5 seconds...

Thats what im saying and i never did this
You don't need to waste that much water for this. Don't keep your tap running guys. Amazing content I threw in a like! :D

using really wold water will help as well. lots of ice cubes to create a bigger temperature variation.

Do you think it would work with a pint (beer) glass, or is that too thick?
Hi ! What sandpaper do you use exactly please ? Thanks a lot !!!!! Kiss
What kind of sand paper did you use and do I need to wet it first?
Amazing process!! I would advice you tho to put some water on the sandpapers before using them. Other than that it was great!!😉🤙😏
Clean video as usual! I actually might do this with some old whiskey bottles.
you can cut square bottles too with this method
Its "safeyteeyisnoomberoneprioreetee", get your pronounciations right.

I thought that too!! haha..for all that work that glass deserved some Balvenie 21 - not some kool aid whisky
Thank you for your time and effort! Excellent informative video.
nice to see a video where you are explaining, talking, and on camera. Makes the channel more human.
I've tried cutting bottles before but didn't get good results. Think I will give it another go. How long did it take to sand to a nice finish?
10-12 minutes
Very good explanation. Greetings from Argentina.
how about heating bottle up to start with, using thicker string and burning it longer and plunging it deep into slushy ice water?
First time a video shows the real challenge to make a glass from bottle
I'm glad I know how to make my own whiskey glass now😋 thanks man that's a lot of help.
Beautiful whiskey glass and I also like the pairing of the cohiba cigar
Nice job and thanks for the inspiration to make my own too.
God bless
Thanks!
I have a strange question: Can you somehow reassemble the bottle back together? I mean reseal the broken parts? Would putting something like hot glue on the edges and sealing it back together make it work?
😂
Excellent, fun. congratulations from Argentina
After sanding down sharp edges, how do you restore clearness in the glass? (get rid of fine scratches)
use higher grit sandpaper
Ive used the string method...it works!
Try using a bit of water on the sandpaper.. it sands better and makes then last longer
I'm liking the new video format!
Thanks =)
Interesante forma de mostrar como hacerlo, muy natural, ensayo y error, hasta lograrlo, se aprecia tu video

Besides using the sand paper..which machine can i use which is faster..for example when making around 1000 glasses
will a tile saw work ? I want to make about 30 glasses from the same Rosé bottle he is using!
First!
Definitely some sort of cheating going on here😋
I suppose if you've got an advantage, use it 😂

So how is this different from any other drinking glass from a bottle?
it has a thicker bottom.
Nicely done
Thanks =)
You are the best ever.
Like how you expressed your frustration. Also love the jig.
The edge of the glass still seems like it’s be sharp, what about using the blow torch to melt the glass?
The blowtorch will crack the glass.
This is a perfect whisky glass 👍
dude that's some seriously good video quality! Well done :D
Thanks!
Nice one! 😊🤙🏽
I like the cutter did you made 👍💐
When you cut glass with a glass cutter you should only go over the glass one time and not jiggle it back and forth
MMX Spotter wouldn’t that make the cut even better?
No he's right
Seemed to work pretty good to me
Can u please do a simple DIY out of a wood palette/skid?
I have 2 videos on my channel where I’m using pallets. One is a bird house, another is a Christmas tree light
Now you totally have to make some whisky! Great project!
The whiskey video will be done in 10 years =))

Thank you!
"nope its a failure.. again... reminds me of my life"

I love these kinds of video
I did this a long time ago. I think I put it in the sink with cold water and a lot of ice.
And I used acetone to dip the yarn in.

Thank u for showing me this trick. But u forgot to tell the world “what” number of sandpaper to USE???? For us beginners. Thank You 👍
The water was probably not cold enough and or the heat ether not concentrated enough or hot enough for the string method
So all you need is a glass-cutter?
Nice
Great wine bottle for that. Ya gotta hunt for a good one and enjoy emptying it. Win win!
Simpler. Mount your Dremel on that same jig. Super cut and no fear of breakage. Just go slow. Perfect every time.
if u wanne cut glass dont go over the same spot twice. use some petrolium oil as lubricant and cut it in one go
Good choice in Whiskey (it's made about an hour drive from my house)
Nice!
When cutting glass, you Should add petroleum or similar. Just a tip :)
The top section will make a nice pendent lamp too.. 😃

hmm... I do have an access to a kiln... 🤔
Inspire To Make there is a lot of ideas on Pinterest but would be great to see how it's done in motion.
The water should be colder for the first method, I threw some ice and it worked
U at not giving it time to heat up. Only when the string burns out then dip in cold water
I tried that with copper wire and a candle an ice then cold water it works fine but just more patience with wider bottles
