      GlamFam I just washed my daughters hair, and to my surprise her texture has changed, it's more manageable and soft. Does it mean that her hair is getting healthier?

      Typically it means her moisture balance has improved, so in most cases, yes that means healthier hair 😊👍🏽

    I am soooo freaking thankful you made this video! My 10 y/o daughter always hates for me to do her hair on wash day because it takes so long. She has very, very thick, curly hair that used to be easier to manage but now it's become very dry, no matter what I put on it & I know why. She's hp but I've been treating it as if it's Lp like mine. Detangling her hair is the worse. I wet it & put lots of conditioner on it but because her hair was usually matted it was a long, difficult process. I don't have a hooded dryer but I do have a heat cap and I will start giving her deep conditioning treatments every wk now.

    I had low porosity, now feels moisturized as I did my hair masque 1 X a week & I used a clear shower cap along with a crochet hat, then I put a wet towel in the microwave to warm it up & kept this on my head for at least 20-30 minutes & I truly believe this helped allot & saved myself from space, which I don't have allot of these days, plus saved some CA$HOLA... I sure love your vids. Thank you, love ya Boo. Hugs to you & yours. 😘💞🎵🌷🌺🌸😆👏👍💫🌟💛

      If you don't mind me asking, do you make your own masks or buy them premade? I have LP hair too that's fine strand and thick density wise, and would consider trying what you said. I think if I could introduce more moisture into my hair it would help me alleviate some of the bad tangling and struggles that plague wash day. I WISH I had the strength and patience to do a masque once a week but, honey, I may have to find a compromise for the sake of my sanity lol 😂

    Wow! Best hair porosity explanations I’ve heard yet. Now I finally understand my main hair type is medium porosity but now I get why my roots were more low porosity and my colored ends are high porosity. I also get why some products work better than others and why sleeping in conditioner over night wasn’t really doing much at all. Thank you so so much. If more women were aware of this, it would make caring for our individual crowns so much easier.

      I’m still confused on what porosity my hair is! I have curly to wavy hair, but I have a relaxer so I’m sure that changes the type and it’s starting to matte easily and knots on my strands after perming. It gets tangled while washing my hair. I know that my hair takes a long time to dry after washing under hair dryer. And my hair is dry all the time! That’s all I got!

    I know this is older but very helpful. I am Caucasian and mid 50s woman. I noticed a change in my hair with menopause, making it much higher porosity which I did not know what that was at the time. This has been very helpful. I have been using Nioxxin shampoo to help with hair loss (related to hormones) but now see that it has sulfates. I will probably keep using it because I think it helps but will concentrate it only at the scalp and try some of the other ideas here. Thanks for this video!

    Thank you SO MUCH for this info! Very helpful for me to keep moisture in my daughter’s hair without the buildup, thus causing scalp issues!
    I’m finding using gentle (sulfate Free) Shampoo and conditioners with no “cones” and oiling her scalp before putting in any other leave in conditioner ore shea butter is helping the scalp stay healthy.

  • @traceydumase
    @traceydumase 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Confusing because I get single strand knots, my hair matts if I keep braids too long, my hair sometimes dries fast in the summer and fairly slow in winter, moisture also depends on what products I use. Some my hair keeps (like olive oil, Jamaican black Castor oil, shea butter), and some just sit on my hair especially coconut oil. My hair loves honey, ACV rinses and heat, warm water included. It's sensitive to protein (especially concentrated protein like eggs) Sulfates don't always make my hair feel stripped (depends on brand) otherwise Sulfate free has me scratching my scalp in 2 days after washing. So my hair characteristics are very mismatched. It's difficult to tell what my porosity is and it's kind of frustrating. I'm 4b, 4a (in the nape of my neck). In the end I think I should just stick to whatever my hair likes otherwise I'll go crazy with all this technical information

    An easy diy steamer is to wet a turbie twist or towel and microwave it. Wrap your hair then put a plastic bag on top. Then sit under a dryer. If you don’t have a dryer use a blow dryer or just put another towel on top of the plastic bag and chill for a while.

    • @sw33tnycandy
      @sw33tnycandy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Pat
      I'm starting to be more DIY with my own deep conditioners. I will use a couple table spoons of a regular conditioner by Shea Moisture in their raw Shea butter collection with avocado, banana, honey, coconut milk or goat milk, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, Shea butter, mango butter, apple cider vinegar and jojoba oil. Make sure both the banana and avocado is over ripe. I use a food processor to blend it all together. Texture is that of Greek yogurt. I sit under a hooded drier for no more than 30mins after covering the hair with a plastic cap. I find that my own DIY dc work the best. I also happen to like Indian healing clay a lot as a DC base. You can use the clay in place of avocado and banana.

      @Mr.Lynwood, thank you. You are absolutely correct about a lot of styling creams and waxes making LP hair look more dull. I thought it was just my experience but I see now that's accurate for a lot of LP hair. Would you have a suggestion for a decent styling product for LP hair?

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I typically opt for liquid leave in and my choice of oil, based on what I’m doing. For protective styling, on dense LP hair I like Shea butter mixes that are a little heavier, but still soft and creamy, they don’t tend to make the hair look dull. For detangling and wearing it out in wash & go’s, I prefer a liquid oil like grape seed oil, or jojoba.
      You’ll also find that foaming wrap lotion, or foaming wrap mixed with setting lotion work rather well for LP hair, rather than most heavy gels.

Another problem I have is the protective style (wearing wigs) I cannot wear a wig longer than a day, if that long. Sarah Siameh that’s a good question. I’m wondering that myself.

    • @GetGlamFam
      @GetGlamFam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      You don’t typically look at hair and identify porosity, but hair that has been chemically treated will have higher porosity, curly hair that is sandy brown or blonde is usually high porosity, due to a lack of Eumelanin in the strands.
      Porosity typically shows by attribution, so low porosity takes a longer time to absorb moisture and water, water will almost appear to roll off, LP is also prone to single strand knots.
      HP is typically dry VERY often, it drinks up moisture and responds very quickly to moisture in the air (humidity, mist, etc) and will revert. It receives moisture easily, but is usually dry again in a day or two, it is prone to matting and tangling.
      Now in either instance, if you have deep conditioned and are still noticing knots, excess tangling, and matting, you are probably due for a trim. Typically you don’t want to extend beyond 3 months on your trims. If you are color treated or chemically treated, trims should be done roughly every 6-8 weeks. If it’s been bleached heavily, relaxed heavily, or has more than one chemical treatment, trim roughly every 4-6 weeks.

      There are videos on strand tests. You put a hair strand in a glass of water, allegedly the porosity is based on where it floats/ sinks

    • @natural7ly694
      @natural7ly694 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You know I absolutely LOOOOVE your channel!
      Your information is so on point. I have been checking out Curly Hair Ninja's channel. She is telling people that all of this is wrong. High porosity stays moist because it sucks in so much water. She says that low porosity is low because it's damaged and it gets to be low porosity from using harsh products.
      My hair is healthy and naturally high porosity. Nothing she says applies to my hair type, yet all that you say (and other professionals) applies to my fine, high porosity hair.
      Everyone (well, a LOT of people) is latching on to what she is saying and now think that they have had it all wrong.
      People are so confused now. We need more good teachers like you and Green Beauty to help guide us in the right direction. I wish someone would go over there and help out in the discussion because it is just crazy! 😳

    Thank you because my hair hasn't had a growth spurt (if I can say that) in a while and grows in spots and always dry to the look but to the scalp, oily; I will look at this again and again until I get it, the difference for I have very soft hair and easily pulls out

    Thank you so much for this information. I have Caucasian normal porosity hair but my grey hair....low, low, low. It doesn't get wet. It is coarse and wirey. Greys still look frizzy even after some serious conditioning. NOW I know to heat up those little grey troublemakers to absorb the conditioner, then rinse them in cold water to lock it in. Cannot WAIT to wash my hair. You are a hair genius.
    I love reading about everyone's hair stories in the comment section too.

    This was really informative. I have low porosity, thin strands, and am natural. No matter what I do, I get the fairy knots and my hair is super dry. I keep my hair (my own, no extra) twists and braids. I need a good moisturizer and a remedy for the fairy knots because I get so much breakage. I use a natural shampoo bar, which I love, and a deep conditioner, however, I need moisture.

    • @ECRT1
      @ECRT1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Use a moisturising deep conditioner with heat to enter the hair shaft. Check your deep conditioner to see if it’s actually a protein deep conditioner, because if it is then you’ll consistently have dry hair x

    • @GetGlamFam

      Any type of damage can impact your porosity, you can even have a different porosity on the ends than the scalp area. Natural porosity can vary for differing sections of the head as well.

    Thank you so much for this! I learn so much from the GlamFam. One follow up question/ request - Any chance you might be able to have a video clip for what each porosity looks like when dry, and then absorbing moisture? Kind of a side by side to help people identify what type of porosity they are working with? I'm only familiar with my toddler's hair, so it's hard to know where she falls in a spectrum. In case you're able to do something like that, thank you in advance!

    Hi Linwood -- love how you breakdown information regarding black hair..... you keep it real and relevant. i'm a 50+ black female and my "fabric" of natural hair is fine and thin (AND low density). i am pretty sure that it is high porosity as well (the water in the glass test did not work for me - i thought my hair was low porosity for a while). i only wish i could sit in your chair weekly to help me understand protein treatments and moisturizing/over-moisturizing for, what i think, is fragile hair. If possible, can you do a video on my type of hair???

    Hi Llnwood,
    Thanks for this video. I learned more in this short video than I've heard or seen on TH-cam in the last 2 years. I didn't know that different porosity types could be present in the same hair strand, or how the stand ends could
    absorb moisture differently than the root. The tips about the correct shampoos and conditioners was very helpful.
    Thanks, God bless

      GlamFam Thank you. Seriously sometimes I don't know what to do. I just go back to the old ways of my Mama when I get frustrated. Hot oil, shampoo, condition, DC then oil the head and plait, then done. It is stressing, however, I still prefer this than when I was relaxed. My scalp use to literally weep when I processed it😁. Now, I am building up my arm muscles.
