All true 👍. The younger ones drink a lot less than the older generation, though. Beer sales have seen declines recently.

yeah, that's true. even my students who drank, they were just curious not trying to cause trouble. and i have heard the beer companies lose sales because only the uncles drink. I was surprised tho, when I went to dog meat restaurants in Hanoi, because it was mostly older uncles, but there were young people eating and drinking there too. thanks for comment. what should i do my next video on?

The reasons beer sale drop are many: 1. there are many more options for a night out than the past, in the past the only option is to drink, nowadays there are clubs, walking streets, coffee shops, etc... 2. Gym, a lot of guys go to gym nowadays, no incentive to drink 3. New DUI laws and the police actually enforce this DUI law. 4. Working schedules seem to increase, causing people to drink less. ... . There are many reasons for beer sale decline.

Having worked closely with 5 Vietnamese people (in the USA) for about 10 years, none of this is surprising to me. Yes, they introduced me to Vietnamese food, and US Vietnamese culture, but they also told me about the culture in Vietnam (whether from their memories, or from visiting, or from relatives still living there.

I just want to clarify a little bit about the pets as food, there actually are laws against that in Vietnam and the only reason why the bush meat trade is still active in Vietnam is because Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese people come to Vietnam to eat dog and cat in fact Korea has the largest dog meat industry.

    • @evan_eh
      @evan_eh  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +15

Appreciate the clarification. I dont know about bush meat, David. But my experience w dog meat is seeing it in the north, and at bia hoi spots near my inlaws hometown in the central highlands. Never saw it in HCMC, and Im not judging. Just letting travellers know what to look for. Canadians kill seals and eat moose and every other national symbol we have. Meat eating is what it is.

However..., if the young boy gets intoxicated, he will find himself out in the street ! ! * Excellent video and very informative, and "Thank you" for sharing the video ! ! Excellent video... I’m in Hoi A now with rain for 17 days. I fully agree with thurabansa’s comment. I despise motorcycles and after countenancing them for years here will not return. It’s the height of stupidity when they pull out of a side streets and don’t even look at what’s coming. Or going 60 mph down a street. The one thing the military government has right in Yangon, Myanmar is that motorcycles are forbidden. It’s Heaven. Motorbikes are the plague of Asia.

It’s true that motorcycle traffic and noise becomes overwhelming for us visitors of Vietnam. But during my one month trip last year, I reflected on the reasons why it’s such a problem, and realized that Vietnam has had to invest so much in it’s war effort over the last century that it could explain why it’s public infrastructures and specially it’s public transport is inadequate for it’s large population. When there is no other way of getting around, there should be no surprise that streets and sidewalks become so crowded with motos. As for people merging on streets without stopping, it looks like the responsibility to avoid collisions is given to the drivers who are seeing the motos merging ; complete opposite to the rest of the planet 😊. I witnessed the same unwritten laws in the Philippines. One thing to note, is that contrary to North Americans, I did not see anyone get angry ( no road rage in Vietnam ) or aggravated on the roads. It’s like big cahotic and synchronized ballet.

In the past when VN was still poor and suffering famines, that’s when farmers had no other choice to eat dog meat instead of pork or chicken, fish. The dog eating cultures formed since. Today, most of the dog’s meat source is from the breeders/farmers. It’s illegal for hunting and stealing, smuggling meat of home dog without official papers or wild animals (enlisted in the red books). There used to be a wave of “trộm chó” (dog theft/snatching) for a while, the thefts then sell the dog to butcher shop, and to the market, if they got caught the would be jailed or money fined. Nowadays dog thefts or dog snatching are becoming less popular crimes bcuz of the demand of dog meat on the market declined sharp, since the young educated generations (also wealthier) deny to eat the dog meat that regularly any more.

Not sure why so many people are shocked by the dog and cat meat. I’d give it a try! It has to be better than many of those bug treats they have. I had plenty of farm animals as pets and they didn’t go to waste when their time came. Not sure why a dog or cat would be much different.

I have lived in Hanoi and HCMC for 6 years and I have almost never seen public drinking. And smoking in my experience is super rare with the exception of airport smoking cubicles. Dog and cat meat is eaten but mostly by the older generation. None of my students would ever eat it. More common in the north. But your comments about motorcycles on sidewalks is totally true. Pedestrians do not get much respect, forcing you to walk in the dangerous streets. Parked motorcycles, restaurant tables, and bags of cement will block your path. Other than this, VN is the best country in Asia by far.

"Rest of the world" apparently just means America.
    1. Job discrimination is legal and common in most of the world, just not legal in the west.
    2. Love hotels are perfectly legal in most countries, it just isn't worth it in most places. I feel like this concept was invented in Japan anyway.
    3. Public drinking is legal in most non-Islamic countries, just not in the States save for certain places like New Orleans and Vegas.
    4. Smoking is very common outside of the US. Europeans still smoke like chimneys and the rest of Asia is ridiculous. Smoking Tobacco in the West is becoming more illegal, while Marijuana smoking is becoming more legal, but nowhere in the rest of the world are cigarettes illegal outright, although I think New Zealand is really trying.
    5. Dog and cat meat is common in much of Asia, but yes, not really consumed and usually illegal outright in the West.
    6. Fraud and scams are illegal everywhere, including Vietnam. And of the scammiest countries, I don't think Vietnam comes close to topping the list.
    7. The motorbike thing is crazy. Southeast Asia is infested with them. Being able to drive on the sidewalk is not unique to Vietnam, it is just a common third world trait that will eventually be banned as the country gets richer.

Mostly the dog’s meat source is from the breeders/farmers.

I chat with Filipinas who work at the banana plantation and they're lucky to make $3 to $8 dollars a day. In fact our union has raised our union dues on us because the Filipinos can't afford their union dues. It really angers me to see how they work 12 hours a day with no medical benefits or anything!! Some would say but that's because of their economy is different from ours and of course that's true but they are just living to exist I wish that could stop. Sorry to vent a little bit but this kind of things really make me mad and I am not even living in their conditions !! I lived in Japan for 4 years.
