yep this helps alot, even though my model is the Officejet Pro 8500A, I was having trouble getting the printhead lid to close, and fearing that it would break off if I applied to much force on it, I decided to quickly come on TH-cam for help. Looks like I wasnt pushing those printheads in firmly enough. :-)
I was frustrated trying to replace an ink cartridge the first time and offer this solution here. When I received the message that the ink was depleted, I opened the door to the ink cartridges, but I could not pull the cartridge out. It was locked in. Here's what I did to unlock the cartridge. I opened the top (not the cover over the glass, but the actual top half of the printer) and held down the * key until the print head moved all the way to the left. Then I could remove the ink cartridge
Hi there! I need to find the clutch part on my printer. Where do I look??? Can u guide me on the right direction??? I got the officejet pro 8500 wireless
You may need to Clean the Printheads. From the control panel, press the Setup button, select Tools and then select Clean Printhead. I hope this helps. I'm an HP employee
What error message are you receiving? Also, HP printers use not only the black cartridge but the color cartridges as well to produce a superior black color.

@ilovegoodsax Make sure that you are installing the printheads when the carriage on the left side of the printer. Remove the printheads and verify that there is nothing obstructing the printheads and also verify that you are installing them into the correct slot. With the printheads back in the printer, attempt to close the latch again. It should close about three quarters of the way down before you have any resistance. From there snap it the rest of the way down with some resistance.
I have office jet L7590, can I use just black printhead (I only print B&W now)? The M&C printhead is damaged and at the moment I can't use any function...not even scanning. I don't plan to print colors with this printer as I will likely to buy the next new release model. Is there anyway to around it? To use just the B&Y printhead for B&W printing and scanning. Thanks!
Ming-Chi Huang According to the product specifications for your printer "c00839084", your printer is not able to use the black and yellow printhead only for black and white printing. In regards to not being able to scan, are you able to make a photocopy from the scanner glass? Is the printer connected directly to the wall?
justprintingaround I can use the scanner/photocopy ONLY if both printhead is functioning. The M&C printhead die last week and since then I couldn't use any functions at all. Is there anywhere I can by pass the printhead issue and use the printer only for scanning? Thanks!
Ming-Chi Huang Unfortunately, this model of printer requires a working printhead in order to copy and scan, otherwise the unit will not be able to clear the error state.
HP Support my printer's model is 8500a pro, now I have another issue, the printer is in a loop that it says "paper jam, press ok" and keep moving the printheads onand on and does not taking any paper, I checked the printer and there is no paper jammed anywhere, what may be the problem?
HP 8500 A910g owners to access printheads: to open top first lift cover. Under cover press small white plastic button on left front horizontal surface next to glass and then lift second cover. Even the manual doesn't tell you this.
My printer tells me to hold the * button for 5 seconds. I do that, and then I try to open it, but I get an error message. Also, when I hit * It says Number:* or something similar as if it thinks im trying to fax/call someone. Every time I turn it on, it keeps saying "Cannot print", but it doesnt say the computer. Im out of yellow ink, and it needs colored ink to print in black and white?
What if one of the ink cartiridges is really hard to remove from its slot - i.e. as though one of the ink cartridges is jammed in tight and is unable to budge? I've already taken some skin of my thumb in doing so. Is there another solution to this problem?
Hi Packager, Please search for C01615954 on HP’s home page or using Google search. The title of the document is “Replacing the Ink Cartridges”. One of the steps mentioned in the document is to lightly press down on the ink cartridge to release it.
Why would one replace the printheads? I am getting vertical lines in things I print in black, will replacing the black printhead solve this? My printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless.
justprintingaround I am sorry, that was a typo in my first post, they are horizontal white lines. I ran the cleaning cycle close to 20 times and it nearly has eliminated the issue but I would consider new print heads if it resolves the last little bit.
+ChrisloUSA, Glad to hear that you are making print quality progress! Here is one more step that may completely resolve the issue, it involves removing the printheads and soaking them in warm water for a few minutes. Here is a link to the video that covers the removal of printheads : th-cam.com/video/mv71N7nJCFg/w-d-xo.html And, here is the link to the document that covers soaking of the printheads please jump to Step 8 and Figure 20: support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04238061
Changing a Print head on the A909a. Turn on the printer and let it do its checkup/checkout - not your dishwasher works faster.... to move the Printheads to the left press and hold the OK key for at least 5 seconds.. Good Luck.
My HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909g) will not print blue. I have replaced the cartridge. The printer recognizes the cartridge but does not test print blue (or green). When I try to manually clean the printhead by opening the printer and holding down the star key, the carriage does not move left to give me access. Restarting does not resolve the issue. What to do?
+Charles Sanders I've included the "Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless (A909g) All-in-One Printer Series" document ( ow.ly/YC512 ) for you. +justprintingaround As I shared, I have moved thru the troubleshooting steps to 'replacing the printheads". However, my issue is this. When I open the printer and press down the *, the carriage doesn't move left. Turning the printer off and then on does not resolve my problem. Recommendation?
+Charles Sanders My apologies for misunderstanding your post. It sounds like you might have a carriage jam. Please follow the steps in the "A 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays for HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier (A909n) and 8500 Wireless (A909g) All-in-One Series" document ( ow.ly/YYzp1 ).
+justprintingaround , I have gone thru the entire process including partial reset. (FYI, the carriage could not be physically moved left.) I have also removed the lid above the printheads when on the right, attempted to clean the printhead electrodes, and attempted to replace the printhead in question. My issue is not resolved. NOW, I am having MAJOR issues locating a support facility or phone service thru your website! Does this have to be so difficult? Your help please.
