A good landing is where you step up on the gunwale and onto the dock and calmly tie up the bow and stern lines. There is no steer wrestling the boat into position.

@@Alvan81 The busiest times are weekends 7-11am and 3-6pm. It's less busy weekdays, mid day. There are bound to be other ramps, less busy, to practice at as well. I didn't say it would be convenient. But then neither is a learner's permit for driving a car and learning to parallel park. It can be done. Launch and recovery IS the practice. Docking can be practiced anywhere there is a dock, not just the ramp. My point is about safety, damage control and at the top of the reasons why, is courtesy and consideration towards others.

@@fishflash1 I get it, wasnt disagreeing per se. I did that, I practiced. But I didn't live in that area with a Half Mile long lines to launch and recover. (If you saw his other video)
Honestly; newbies should just pay for the first 6 months to have the boat in the Dry Storage-Launch facilty.
It's hard enough to learn the basics, without the advanced knowledge needed to Launch and Recover.
Because no matter how empty it is, those things are tremendously challenging and stressful for a newb.

I have never bought a new boat. Do dealers happen to mention to new boat buyers how to get some training?
When I did have what I would call a "Full Size Boat" (70's Wellcraft with a 170 HP 4 cylinder) there where some things I automatically knew because experience with fork lifts, real wheel steering ya know.
The boat I used before that is a 1959 14 foot aluminum "V" hull tiller steer. So I'd guess I learned something from that one too.
However, do to, well life, I lost that boat. (Long Story) I am working on the deck, rails and bulk heads of a "New" boat that when complete, I intend to put into practice some of what I have seen on this channel and others.
There's a "Boat Load" of things I didn't know before (Pun Intended)
SO Back to the "New Captain" He needs to quickly learn 2 things from what I saw.
    ONE. Neutral is your friend.
TWO. Never approach anything faster than you are willing to hit it.
THREE. When coming in at an angle, turn motor toward dock and put in IDLE reverse. That will pull stern toward dock and slow you down.
    OK That's 3........

  • @markburnett3929
    @markburnett3929 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I sure am enjoying the channel Broncos Guru! What ever happened to the "Bump" of forward or reverse before returning to neutral as it may be to moderate your speed and direction around the dock? Certain wind/current strength would require an adjusted tactic, but man, seems like many of the new captains would benefit from this technique. But, then again, your videos wouldn't be as entertaining!

To retrieve a boat with two+ people on board:
    1. Nose boat into end of dock
    2. Tow vehicle driver steps onto dock
    3. Boat doesn’t tie-up and hangs out of the way - away from docks and boat traffic
    4. Tow driver waits in line and backs into ANY open launch spot. Even the dreaded middle spot
    5. Captain drives boat onto trailer. Tow driver hooks bow eye and winches boat onto trailer
    6. Tow driver pulls boat out of water far enough to instal transom tie-downs and remove plug
    7. Tow driver then tows the boat to an open area out of the way to further secure boat, fenders, etc
This method requires no dock space or tie-up. But it does require one tow rig driver and one boat pilot. But with this method, you will only take up about 3 minutes of ramp time. Thank goodness my wife was a great boat pilot. She was excellent at hitting the trailer. Too bad we are currently boatless.

The problems for newbies are several. Boats don't have brakes and at slow speed, you have to use the throttle very gently. Most boats steer from the stern, not, like a car, from the bow. Engines for planing hulls have propellors designed for high speed, so driving a boat slowly is a bit like drriving in slow moving traffic in a Formula 1 racing car. This means that the props are working suboptimally at low speed, hence the tendency for boats to wander to port and starboard. In the UK and around the world, including the USA, the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) offers power boat courses where slow speed manoevering is taught. Many UK boat insurers insist that the driver of any powerboat has at least an RYA Level 2 certificate as a requirement of insurance. They also insist that during watersports there are two in the boat at any one time. Kill cords and lifejackets for the driver and children as well as water skiers are also a good idea. A colleague of mine almost lost his left arm because his wife wasn't wearing a kill cord and when she was knocked to one side by a wave whilst he was monoskiing, the boat turned and ran him over.

my man saw an open dock and took it, unlike EVERY SINGLE BOATER IN THAT LINE. As far as i'm concerned, its a free dock until a line is cleated.

Understand the frustration pretty much why I’m a weekday warrior. Limited newbs. Cutting in line can backfire on you though. Imagine if that guy came back for his boat and someone untied it....oops

You can tell last guy was pro/ semi pro. ( not a weekender ) most I see @ the ramp use the ole 2 line method. Those that do it by themselves or regularly use the "mid-cleat 1 line " . Holds bow & stern to dock with one line so the capt'n isn't running back & forth the boat. Great vid keep it up. Tight lines🎣

You keep referring to them as the Captain, why? They obviously have not earned that title. Captains have experience, ability and the qualifications.

When I first started, I got lots of practice on days or in places that weren't busy... These aren't the places for first timers to launch and retrieve... I'm experienced and the busyness of these ramps would probably have me flustered.

If the last guy went in and struggled, then he'd clearly be in the wrong... But since he's probably gone in 60 seconds... doing all right.
And seems the recurring comments on a lot of these videos is longer cuts... so B roll should be mandatory :D

The last guy....yeah that would be me.....life long boater. I can dock and load my 35 footer alone under 5 mins. Give the noobs a minute tops to pick a dock and go for it. I'm not waiting for them to have a 5 minute conversation on which dock is better and how they plan to do it. This boat ramp madness is why I no longer trailer, I live on the water and have my boat docked out back.

That professional captain would have been ticketed for making a wake in a no wake zone.. there is no tolerance for the reasons you were upset. During that process it would’ve been appropriate time to confront him about butting inline. That type of behavior would not be tolerated from where I’m from. So he might just want to stay in Florida

  • @patrickhamilton300
    @patrickhamilton300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That wasn’t a line, there were 2 open docks.....those were sheeple waiting for the herd to move. Capt was a boss and was probably gone before any of the rest of these boats could’ve even landed....kudos for thinking outside the herd!

I can’t remember goofing up when I got my first second or third boat. I think because I’ve always loved boats and growing up around them it just comes natural. That last guy didn’t have a clue how to centre the boat on the trailer. If you snooze you lose at the ramp. Old mate was right to jump the que.

I think a b roll would too disrespectful honestly. I don't think you should publish 10 minuets of someone struggling it will scare people off boating. I think this is the perfect mix of entertainment and not shaming people

Damn it’s hard watching people who shouldn’t own boats, owning boats and not knowing what they are doing. Just about Every one of these boaters need to go to the Coast Guard schooling for The Boaters Safety Course

1:15 this guy has zero clue how to operate a boat. No bearing on how the boat will react with certain inputs to the throttle and steering wheel. Any time a "captain" panics and leaves the helm while the boat is still in gear to fend off a dock or another boat is dangerous. I know everyone has to start somewhere and learning takes time. But if you are this new to operating a boat you should not be learning in a crowded boat ramp. Go on a week day when nobody is there and practice. Hire an experienced boater for a day to show you. That's a brand new boat probably $100K and he's bouncing it between a dock and someone else's boat.

No he was a jerk, I hate snobby impatient and rude charter captains, just because you are a pro doesn’t mean you own the water/ramp and everyone needs to conform to you. I have had so many jerk charter captains intentionally wreck me with their wakes with my little boat, jump in the spot I’m fishing etc they don’t have special rights on the water.

Raise the lift gate on an SUV, lower the tailgate on a pick up.....both make for "seeing" your trailer in the rearview when backing.

Back in the day, you know, when I was little bit younger and DUMBER. I would have been temped to wait for him to get most of the way to his trailer, then drive my boat to his, untie his, and tie that rope to my boat . Pull it back to where it was floating , and have the next person in line to use the next ramp.

Been busy so catching up on your vids now. It would be great to see an un-editied version of the guys that struggle on the ramp. Sometimes i find it frustrating to see the highlights and I want to know more. Regarding the last bloke, mmmmmm, very uncool.

Screw them, if you have your stuff together, and others are putzing along... chances are they will take half hour getting out of your way and take up the 3 lanes to get their 18’ out. By the time those slow polks get tied off, The pro will be at the bar.
