Cover of a Bob Seger song. This is not Countryallica. Garage Inc had some killer songs on it. Tuesday's Gone, Mercyful Fate, Helpless, Breadfan, and Am I Evil are all classics. As well as Last Caress/Green Hell and the infamous "So What". Vin: "that's never been a thing". Sorry my dude but I get that all the time. And that is what Seger was talking about. Just people being ignorant in general and when you are living on the road, you just don't wanna deal with that shit. And for the love of god, silence your damn phone!!!
Yeah, in rural areas, and in those years, long haired guys could get in a lot of trouble. My dad told me a story about when their band (he and my uncle) played a bar in Indiana where some Notre Dame football players hang out. This was late 60's/early 70's. They basically got their asses kicked by some football players for their long hair.
Didn't Metallica also cover Queen's ''Stone Cold Crazy'' on Garage Inc.? How on Earth could you have omitted that one in light of Americans re-discovering Queen's music this past year? ;)

Garage Inc is an epic cover album! Merciful Fate should be next. It is a medley of 3 songs by Merciful Fate and definitely one of the best songs on the album.
A BIG part of Metallica you are missing is the Garage Days (covers.) From the first with Am I Evil? and Blitzkrieg to The $5.98 Garage Days Revisited EP to Garage Inc. All great songs covered by Metallica.
"Is it woman? Is it man?" comes from when Bob Seger was touring as a young man and all band members had long hair. This song is about his life on the road.
This is one of the greatest covers of all-time. Also, don’t say “Country-allica” as if it’s an entirely bad thing. Even their country-ish stuff is excellent. Check out “Mama Said” sometime. Incredible song.
Normally I yell at you about Demon of the Fall, but in this case I implore you, please look at the uncensored music video that Metallica did for this song. It's very moving and impactful!
They really did a great job covering this song, as well as others...Man, I don't care if it "countryallica" or not, I like it...No matter what genre of music they decide to play with...trash, metal, heavy metal, rock they cannot mistake..
Garage Inc was an assortment of cover songs. Turn the Page is a Bob Seger cover. I actually enjoyed the album. Especially their Motorhead covers. And I love when you are so wrong about a song. Lol
I really hope they did lemmy justice on those covers (I'm not much a Metallica fan and dont think they belong in the big 4 kreator is a better fit) but I'll go give those a listen
Bob Seger wrote this about life on the road as a musician. In small towns during the 60s and the 70s longhairs were frowned upon. This song actually reminds me of the scene from Easy Rider in the diner where some of the locals are making remarks about Dennis Hopper's long hair.
As many have said, this is a cover of a Bob Seger song. They did a great job, but the original is better. The long hair thing definitely was a thing. I used to have extremely long hair in the 90s. Even then, you had close-minded people who made assumptions based on that. And oh, my lord....silence your phone when you press the record button.
@@johntrooper5310 i think the lyrics are based on bob segers experience on the road. either way, good song. and youre right, the ignorance about this song is mind numbing. vin tries to over explain everything he hears. sometimes right, sometimes wrong
That golden voice of my fav Papa Het.....Remind me the time when I was 21 and every day I used to listen Metallica for 5 hours/day .....Shaking my head until my neck hurts me. Oh...That was some time....Love u Metallica....
You guys do it your way & that's cool....but as an old music fan, I must admit that the one thing that drives me nuts with some of your reactions is the total lack of research into the song you listen to. Especially who the song was written & originally recorded by. As others have written here, it is a Bob Seger song from 1973. A quick search of the song on Wikipedia will give you the background...if you care. And at that time, Seger's hair was a long as Sori's...lol. By the way, Metallica & many touring rockers long considered this song the perfect reflection of how the performer feels ....hence their decision to cover it 25 years later. The original is here - th-cam.com/video/GONmFCkCGCc/w-d-xo.html
My younger brother was at Cobo Hall in Detroit when Bob Seger recorded Live Bullet great album.Bob Seger still lives in his home state Michigan. His first band was called Bob Seger And The Last Heard.
The original song was from Bob Seger. It is very good as well. You should listen to the original version and you will find it good as well. I wish you all the best guys it is wonderful to be a part of your Channel. I wish you both every good thing to you and all those that both of you love. Big hugs with respect Brant

James’ voice was at its best during this time. Excellent control over his growl and clean vocals, especially with the transitions. Check out the Mercyful Fate Medley from this same album, it’s absolutely amazing.
This black boy (myself) has been following Metallica since day one! This is a Bob Seger cover. If you know your history this is a 2 Disc re-release of Metallica’s EP Garage Days, first disc has the cassette covers from mid 80’s the second is covers from what a Garage Band would release! Yes I’m Roman Traditional Catholic - What does Matthew 7:1 say or state!
Garage Inc is a double cd cover album. CD 1 was for the time new covers while CD 2 was earlier B-Sides and stuff like that. I suggest you do So What next time! It's fucking great!
I tried to request non-metal songs too, country, rock, blues, jazz They keep saying it's more like a metal reaction channel and dont want sad songs : D I think they should be open and do non-metal once in a while at least and if they ask, "give me one good reason", hey, it's where metal comes from
One thing to consider for opening bands also, maybe not so much today but definately back in the '90's, the sound guy was there for the headliner. If he wanted to be lazy, he set the board for the main band and the other bands had to deal with it. That can make for some really bad mix issues if one band plays Eb and one plays B standard
Great reaction and thank you for doing this. Although Garage Inc is all covers. Along with Garage Days. I encourage you two to check out and dive further into this album.
Sori got it right on this one Vin. The lyric "All the same old clichés, ‘Is that a woman or a man?" does refer to the regulars of the restaurant not being sure if the people who just walked in are men or women. This song was written around 1972 and middle america probably was still not used to guys with long hair and would first assume a person with long hair was a women. Great cover by Metallica.
I saw your reaction last night to Queen- Another one bites the dust. Please react to 1985 Live Aid performance, which has been documented as the best live Rock and Roll performance in history. It wasn’t even a “Queen” audience, but Freddie had the 72,000 crowd eating out of his hand in seconds! It was for the starving people in Africa and 16 hours of music in England and Philadelphia. Every band at the time played. They all had a 17 minute spot. Queen stole the show. Freddie has been rated as the best Rock singer of all time. His range was 6-7 octave. If you have heard the Queen-David Bowie “Under Pressure” you will hear Freddie toward the end hit every note on the scale. Thank you.
I listened to this video on earphones and actually heard the echo of the song. The main is the original record of the song, and the second is from your earphones, in a 2-3 seconds difference between them
I don't know if this was mentioned, a little teeny, tiny tidbit...you know barely worth mentioning but...… They covered this from Bob Segar :) And of course when the lyric about "Its it woman is it man" was about him arriving with Long hair... Because when written in 1972, was a different time seeing people with long hair, as oppose to now.
Metallica's cover of Bob Segar's "Turn the Page" is good but you guys should also listen to the 1973 original. Probably said down below, but I haven't read through all of the comments, all the songs off of "Garage Inc." are covers.
The Original Lyric from Mr Seger was "Is that a woman or a man...." Metallica shortened a lot of the lyric. but i like the harder version still love the original though
I do believe he meant it as is it a woman or a man, just phrased differently, as it was written but classic rocker Bob Seger who came in the 60s and 70s when the phrase "long haired freak" and other such phrases were used toward the counterculture.
If you like their covers, Las Carress/Green Hell, Am I Evil, Breadfan, Crash Course in brain surgery, So What, Stone Cold Crazy, Die, Die , Die My Darling, and so many more! Rumor is there will be another Garage Days album
Before the song even starts Vin says the song is “nothing like Shortest Straw”, then says he’s never heard the song before or even heard of the album that it came from, so how would he know?
On this album they do a cover by Lynyrd Skynyrd- Tuesday's gone it's got some of the original members from that group helping them record that song in the studio As well as other guys such as pepper Kenan from C.O.C John Traveler from Blues Traveler. It's a great cover
In covering this song one of the fun things that came about was the contextual meaning , at least for me, changed. Bob Segar’s version was more in line with the way Sori understood the song, especially at the “is that a woman, or a man” line. I would like to see you guys react to the original at some point just to hear how it may or may not have a different meaning for you in some way.
Heya V&S. I remember hearing Bog Segar's original version of this as a kid. I never though it would be possible for anyone to meet that high bar, but Metallica seems to have taken the song and made it their own. It is a song about life on the road as a performer. The thing about the line 'is it woman, or is it man' is about the Rock'n Roll perception that all that long hair makes a man ' effeminate '. Being spoken in a way that degrades you and being able to overhear it, can hurt more than a physical blow. And for far longer, since cuts and bruises would fade, but the hurt from words can last forever. We all see the rock stars, their glamor, and the glitter and lights, and the music... but we never see or think of their lifestyle. Living in hotels and motels. Eating cheap food in diners and fast food places. And yet, they get up on that stage and perform for us, and let us lose ourselves in their music. So, sometimes, not getting your wish is a good thing. Because that life is not for everyone. speaking Frank-ly
You should definitely react to the official video. Garage Inc. is a great cover album, it has so many great songs that Metallica gave to them a completely different perspective. "Turn the Page" is one of them, especially with the video that blow so many minds!!! 🤘🏼🎶
Yes this is a cover song from Bob Seger who is from Michigan not from Detroit right? Ann arbor Michigan. This CD selection from Metallica is from garage Inc or Incorporated for those of you that do not know. It's a CD of cover songs please research every single one on there thank you.
Sori nailed it: "is it woman, is it man" refers to their (actually, 70's Bob Segar) long hair, diners confusing them as being women in a demeaning way.
This era of Metallica, load, reload etc are some of their best music it isn’t master of puppets which is fine why would you want every album the same they are artists and have made amazing music every album don’t compare them to each other
Killer cover! Do check "Astronomy" (Blue Oyster Cult) if you haven't Garage Days was first an EP in the late 80s, when Jason had joined in after Cliff. Later it was a double album as Garage Inc.
Bob Seger wrote this song about being on the road 250 nights a year. It's about the monotony of being on the road and back in the 60s and 70s if you had long hair in certain parts of the country sometime you had to fight your way out of a joint and that's what seger is talking about in turn the page. In fact it happen at a truck stop what he and his band stopped they got catcalls. PS just a suggestion Wikipedia is a great help.
Sori nailed the "is it woman, is it man? " part. The ol local country boys in a roadside restaurant in say, Nebraska or Idaho , will react like that to outsiders with long hair strolling onto their turf
I'll go on ahead now & suggest you next react to their official video of this song & perhaps keep the lyrics handy. Unless impossibly late & you've already witnessed it ( it meaning the official video), it really is somethin to behold. Also, from a completely different glance.
Absolutely love both version of this song and the meaning that each brought to it, with the original Bob Segar about being on the road touring and with Metallica and being the stripper on stage trying to support her family. Both are amazing. No "country" about it, I grew up raised listening to country, old school and 80's-90's country. This ain't even close to either. - Lisa
Hey vin, just curious, is it all country that you dont like? Or just the popular stuff you hear? If your up fro it, I suggest country guys like the Coltar Wall or Benjamin Todd. Its not that radio bs we all have heard. Maybe "hell's canyon" by the lost dog street band. That's probably one of the best actual country songs I've ever heard. But it's obviously to you. Peace brother

A BIG part of Metallica you are missing is the Garage Days (covers.) From the first with Am I Evil? and Blitzkrieg to The $5.98 Garage Days Revisited EP to Garage Inc. All great songs covered by Metallica.
I loved that whole album!
Merciful Fate is amazing!
It's very moving and impactful!
yes, i cant listen to this song without picturing the video.
Garage days then Garage Inc became a collection of all their covers. Great songs on that album. Maybe a covers week is in order!
@Dennis B I think a covers week is a great idea!
Preach!
The ignorance in this break down is on a whole other level!
Yeah kind of took it to a new level. The original live version is a masterpiece.
Always is
@@johntrooper5310 i think the lyrics are based on bob segers experience on the road. either way, good song. and youre right, the ignorance about this song is mind numbing. vin tries to over explain everything he hears. sometimes right, sometimes wrong
@@johntrooper5310 oh im fully aware.... They think every. Song is some sort of spiritual journey of enlightenment
In the original Seger version the lyric is, "Is it a woman, or a man". You always seem outnumbered, you don't dare make a stand". Point, Sori.
That golden voice of my fav Papa Het.....Remind me the time when I was 21 and every day I used to listen Metallica for 5 hours/day .....Shaking my head until my neck hurts me.
Oh...That was some time....Love u Metallica....
You should have played the official music video for this one
@@Rikko5500 i think the video was meant to complement, the song. Rammstein does that a lot.
If you want country-allica, I'm pretty sure James made a country album.
God save us.
SuperUltraFunTime i think he made few songs
I find the lack of research to be frustrating!
Sori getting good at this
Shes definitely in Metal high school at this point. A ways to go though. Vin..... Well we wont go there😂
@@paulriddle7818 was surprised they didn't mention it was a cover.but sori has been dead on lately.and vin means well.
@@raymondwirth89 they didnt mention it because they actually didnt know about Garage Days..... Stone Cold Crazy qas a hit too off of it.
@@paulriddle7818 they did whisky in a jar from the same album.

I saw Metallica in 2004 and I was shocked that they played this song.
You should check out some BB King
Preferably his song "How blues can you get?"
I tried to request non-metal songs too, country, rock, blues, jazz
They keep saying it's more like a metal reaction channel and dont want sad songs : D
I think they should be open and do non-metal once in a while at least and if they ask, "give me one good reason", hey, it's where metal comes from
The Lyrics are "Is that a woman or a man", it's in the Seger original. It's about what some people used to say about a guy with long hair.
Moonspell - Full Moon Madness
Moonspell - Night Eternal
One thing to consider for opening bands also, maybe not so much today but definately back in the '90's, the sound guy was there for the headliner. If he wanted to be lazy, he set the board for the main band and the other bands had to deal with it. That can make for some really bad mix issues if one band plays Eb and one plays B standard
Garage inc. Is all cover songs. Listen to the original and you'll see how Metallica made it so much better. Just like whiskey in the jar.
Just stop. The live Segar version is one of the greatest pieces of music ever done.
Your my favorite channel because you intelligently break down songs load and reload your respectably missing the boat vin
they do realize Metallica and doing a cover that's why it's called Garage Days Inc
I do believe he meant it as is it a woman or a man, just phrased differently, as it was written but classic rocker Bob Seger who came in the 60s and 70s when the phrase "long haired freak" and other such phrases were used toward the counterculture.
The Best cover song!!!!!
If you like their covers, Las Carress/Green Hell, Am I Evil, Breadfan, Crash Course in brain surgery, So What, Stone Cold Crazy, Die, Die , Die My Darling, and so many more! Rumor is there will be another Garage Days album
What the hell is his beef with country? Vin really has a close mind if he thinks this is country.
Before the song even starts Vin says the song is “nothing like Shortest Straw”, then says he’s never heard the song before or even heard of the album that it came from, so how would he know?
On this album they do a cover by Lynyrd Skynyrd- Tuesday's gone it's got some of the original members from that group helping them record that song in the studio
As well as other guys such as pepper Kenan from C.O.C
John Traveler from Blues Traveler. It's a great cover
Garage inc is all cover songs. The first garage days came out in 1987
JR Cortes Actually 84 with Ami Evil Bliterkig
I was the talking about the first Garage days album. Am I evil was the first cover song they recorded.
JR Cortes thought Sucking my Love was first ever recorded but it was never release.
I know they played it live but never heard of them actually recorded it. One of the main songs they recorded from diamond head was am I evil.
Sori was right on the money with her outlook on the lyrics.
Also Derek and the dominoes Layla, legend song
sepultura amen or under siege
Amen was composed by sepultura in memory of the Waco Texas massacre
You should definitely react to the official video. Garage Inc. is a great cover album, it has so many great songs that Metallica gave to them a completely different perspective. "Turn the Page" is one of them, especially with the video that blow so many minds!!! 🤘🏼🎶
You know bob seger sang the original, right?
Yes this is a cover song from Bob Seger who is from Michigan not from Detroit right? Ann arbor Michigan. This CD selection from Metallica is from garage Inc or Incorporated for those of you that do not know. It's a CD of cover songs please research every single one on there thank you.
Poets of the Fall Carnival of Rust
Sori nailed it: "is it woman, is it man" refers to their (actually, 70's Bob Segar) long hair, diners confusing them as being women in a demeaning way.
This is a Bob Seger song if you didn't know. Love you guys.
This isn't Metallica's song, Bob Seger did this song in the early 70's, and it's based on his realities of life on the road.
No shit.
@@MorbidAngel31775 Was I talking to you?
This era of Metallica, load, reload etc are some of their best music it isn’t master of puppets which is fine why would you want every album the same they are artists and have made amazing music every album don’t compare them to each other
Killer cover! Do check "Astronomy" (Blue Oyster Cult) if you haven't
Garage Days was first an EP in the late 80s, when Jason had joined in after Cliff.
73 version-here's the way it supposed to snow. Turn the page. th-cam.com/video/GONmFCkCGCc/w-d-xo.html
Sori nailed the "is it woman, is it man? " part. The ol local country boys in a roadside restaurant in say, Nebraska or Idaho , will react like that to outsiders with long hair strolling onto their turf
I don’t know why but garage inc is probably my favorite metallica album
I'll go on ahead now & suggest you next react to their official video of this song & perhaps keep the lyrics handy. Unless impossibly late & you've already witnessed it ( it meaning the official video), it really is somethin to behold. Also, from a completely different glance.
Are you telling me that neither of you have heard this song song by Bob Seger?? I find that very hard to believe
@@johntrooper5310 you must be knew to this channel..... there are much bigger songs they haven't heard.
You guys must be new to this channel! After listening to Imagine Vin said maybe they could try a interview this John Lennon guy!
Mickey Rube No I have been listening to these guys for a long time but I just believe they don’t know any of the songs. It blows my mind every time
They live under a fuckin rock lol and too ignant to do just a little research
Metallica Sweet Amber
Absolutely love both version of this song and the meaning that each brought to it, with the original Bob Segar about being on the road touring and with Metallica and being the stripper on stage trying to support her family. Both are amazing. No "country" about it, I grew up raised listening to country, old school and 80's-90's country. This ain't even close to either. - Lisa
How can one not know this is a cover
YOU GUYS SHOULD CHECK OUT THE OFFICIAL VIDEO.
Countryaliica? Hardly...original is a rock classic from a dude from Detroit....Bob Seger check him out
Exactly
