I don't have any MREs but I have a stockpile of emergency shelf stable food. I had several of these MREs that were 10 years old, and tried them. They are supposed to last for many years but not so much 10 years and they were gross overall. Prisoners eat better. But back in 2005 mostly all the survivors and police officers working hurricane katrina were provided MREs until other food was provided by FEMA.
All dads agree on 1 thing. They deserve better meals and I swear I think one of them wanted to tear up.😢 I miss my dad he passed away 3 years ago and this reminds me of him.
nah fr they deserve better meals but these are emergency rations. They are trying to make it taste better, bt the most important aspect for now is weight, compartmentalization (transport space) and how long the food stays good. Which is smart and efficient for war, but forces troops to eat some NASTY food. I've gone weeks on end eating these in field exercises. Its pretty tasty for something that lasts like 10 years y'know. But compair to some other countries mre's and they get WAY nicer food in cans and stuff (cans add more weight). Weight is super important. On some forward military bases they actually do have mini grocery stores n stuff.
MREs are for when you are in combat or training in the field, they are high in calories so you have energy all day. When I was in the army they use to have little bottles of Tabasco. The best by far was chilli mac and the worst was the veggie omelet
The joke/alternative name for the worst one was called Vomelet as you can probably guess why and yes it is as bad as they say. Tried it myself during service.
The food is for military troops on the go, they have great food on the base...should have had the dads prepare it from the package and had a soldier help out or give tips on how they eat it. Much love to our troops and veterans, Thank you for that you do for this country!
We did (still do I'm guessing) eat these things in certain ways for certain reasons. They cost about $9 a pop in 2010 so we only got them when we had to. I think we got two a day. There's ways to mix this stuff up and make it more bearable.
That’s not Military food, that’s combat food. That’s what you eat in the field, you can prepare it anywhere, and it’s meant to give you a lightweight high calorie meal instead of starving.
thank you this explains the answer to my other comment i said why cant we give them fresh fruits vegetables and meat unless they are behind enemy lines. This is food you travel with in combat when you dont have access to the mess hall
ppl need to stop being so dramatic. they have personal chefs at work, BUT this is the food they would eat if they had to go to war or boot camp. they usually eat really good food
What branch or what military cause chow hall food is complete trash and what “personal chefs” if you’re not in or been in than you have zero clue of what the food is like
Seeing this brought back memories. When Katrina hit Mississippi and Louisiana we had so many MREs😅 i lived with my grandparents and it was just us 3. We had no lights for 2 weeks and from where we lived it was a one way in, one way out road and it was blocked for days because of the downed trees and powerlines. I never figured out how to do use the green bags. I would love to try the Poundcake and cheese again.
They use to put at least some Tobasco sauce in. Not knowing how much boys and especially Southern boys appreciated it. There's countries, third world almost compared to us who make far better MREs than We do.
This has been said many times already but, the MREs are food for when soldiers are on the go, on the battlefield. I don't think it would be smart to give them a meal that would be fresh, the enemy could smell it and the soldier's location would be given away.
I ate one for the first time back in 2013 when I took a trip to the National Guard base to play paintball and do some of their exercises. The one I had was Spaghetti with meat sauce and it wasn't bad. Mine had the cracker brick and skittles...I loved it.
Army Veteran here, they came with little Tabasco bottles salt pepper sugar and wet napkins… it would have been a better experience if they had you open the mre’s yourselves and use the heating bag!
@@fmfdocbotl4358 The last MRE's I had (Around 2015 IIRC) came with chili flakes I think. Looking into it, they added the bottle of Tabasco back to MRE's in 2019. So, that's good news.
Most MREs nowadays are pretty good. I eat most without heating because I don’t usually have 10-15 to wait 😂 ones now are better than what we had 10 years ago. Just passed 13 yrs in the Army a few months ago. I usually take 1 or 2 home after the field for “just in case” emergency
I just adore that big bottle of Tapatío. I guess they would eat even a napkin if they get some of their beloved hot sauce to go with it. I only guess it because in my opinion hot sauce makes everything better and I'd eat that napkin if I had hot sauce with it.😆God bless these man I love them all ❤🌶🌶❤
i feel like it would have been a good experience if you had them actually open the mre pack and make them food with the heating device aswell and most if not all also come with condaments like salt pepper some even come with hotsauce packets
It is possible to make better tasting food, but American MRE's prioritize practicality in the field over flavor, whereas something like a French MRE does the exact opposite. Also its very common for American MRE"s to have Tobasco sauce, or some other sauce in them.
those are meant to last you all day lol. otherwise you'll the wrath of the mre sh*ts lol imy favorites are the beef stew, chicken in pesto sauce, southwest asian beef strips, and the bbq pork patty. did you guys even use the green heating packets to warm them up?
ive lived on these things before. should of got them a menu with the jalapeno cheese spread. that was the bomb. overall these meals arent bad. pretty much hormel and canned meals packed full of preservatives
These have to be portable, minimum weight, and eaten on the fly and emergencies. These aren't being served in base cafeterias. I think the dads know, but yeah.
I mean he’s not wrong about not being able to heat the tortillas. One day we had. A large tent with a gas fed heater and being the mexican that I am I walk over to the heater and slap the tortilla on top in front of my Platoon Sergeant. That man and everyone in that tent went silent and bursted out laughing. I got to watch them all burn themselves when they tried flipping the tortilla and as a bonus the tent smelled like tortillas instead of sweat
lol, Arturo forgot the Coast Guard... To be fair though, EVERYONE forgets the Coast Guard. What's more bothersome, is that he forgot the Marine Corps. There's a joke to be made about Marines and crayons, but i'm just too tired to do it witty, so i'll pass this time.. The thing about MREs though, is that they're kinda bland on purpose, to make them palatable to as many people as possible. S'why nothing's properly spiced or seasoned. Guys who have been in long enough know to have some spices and stuff on hand to make the things taste better. We CAN warm up the rations in the field.. it's just that sometimes the ration heaters don't work right.....but you CAN leave the entree in a safe place in the engine bay of a vehicle, if you've got time.. Also, yeah, that mayo is runny because it's fake "Light" mayo.. basically miracle whip (which is disgusting).

My parents and I watched this together both serve in the US Army, and this brought back memories.

Everyone in the military whos had an MRE has their favorite or least favorite but i think mostly everyone can agree that the Cornbread is really good
