I agree with what Mike said about Metal bands going for too perfect production these days, it does become tiring to listen and makes many bands sound a bit too similar.
Yeah, Mikael can do whatever he wants. But isn't that EXACTLY what he's been doing for 20 years and counting? Please don't give us this bullpoop that he is "using Opeth's fanbase" for pursuing new musical ideas. Of course many so called fans are dissapointed that the brand or product "Opeth" has not been delivered according to some made-up specification (e.g. a mix of growls and clean vocals). But it doesn't follow that those people are in a moral position to demand anything from the band or any of its members. Sorry.
I get what they're doing, really. Problem is I don't particularly like it, it just leaves me cold. The contrast between Mikael's amazing death growls and his really great clean vocals made this band really special. Now that's it's gone, I feel we're left without something without anything special. His love for the retro just doesn't fit my taste at all. I'd rather listen to old prog bands, King Crimson or even Porcupine Tree. He can do whatever he want, really, but just change your band's name. Using Opeth's fanbase for pushing this new direction is imo disrespectful to fans,

Yeah its seeping its way through a lot of bands which is unfortunate, those squeaky clean productions can suck the life out of the music.
Totally. Some of them sound like they could just compose the music in guitar pro, export a file, add vocals, and call it an album. It's getting weird.
