How to Build an Outdoor Planter Bench--[DIY Garden Bench Plans]

  • I'm so excited to share this fun outdoor planter bench project to kick off spring in our new home!
    This project was sponsored by my friends at The Home Depot & Vigoro. After the build was over, I turned to the innovative line of Vigoro products available exclusively at The Home Depot to help me add some color and some life to my new planters!
    #HomeDepotPartner #THDVigoro
    You can build only the planters if you're just needing something cute to put your favorite plants and greenery in this summer. Or, you can take it a step further and add the bench to give your planters double duty and give your garden, patio or porch a little extra seating.
    Grab the project details here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-w...
    And grab the printable plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...

    Congratulations on your very successful channel and I love this project that I plan to build. My very wise grandfather (and I am now 70 years old myself :), told me that if you meet someone that does not like dogs, "that is probably not someone you want to have as a friend" :). My shop dog Buddy is a 90 pound mutt rescue and he brings me joy and Lucy reminds me much of him. Thanks for the tips on the angles without math!

      The cedar 2x4s are about twice as much as a pine 2x4 and about 50% more than treated (in my area). So that part is a little bit of a splurge, But the fence pickets are about 1/8th the price of a 1x6. So really, it evens out pretty well 🙌🙌

    Great idea! I really appreciate how real you are in your videos. My challenge is the cedar planks, I have a hard time finding straight planks. I have to dig through the pile. Were you able to find those easily?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So glad you enjoyed the video 😊 I didn’t really have a hard time finding decent ones. At my Home Depot, they’re stacked outside and it was a pretty huge stack. I picked the majority right off the top. Some a few rows down were a little wet, but I took them home and let them sit in the sun a little bit and they were fine. Since these are cut into smaller pieces (for the most part), they didn’t have to be perfect.

    On the real though, I do have a genuine question for you this week Shara. You are a girl after my own heart with your frugalities 😉 I have noticed that you use Ryobi a lot, which makes a lot of economical sense, but I also noticed that it looks like you are using a Mirka sander (which is not exactly cheap). Have you found that the Mirka is worth the price, since I think you like sanding about as much as you like painting?! 😂

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, in full transparency, the Mirka was given to me. 100% honest, I wouldn’t have paid for that out of pocket. It’s great, but I don’t know that it’s 100 times better than other options for the 100 times price difference. I like that it has a vacuum attached, but I’m not sure it’s much different than attaching a shop vacuum to another orbital sander 🤷‍♀️ However, I have about four brands of drill/drivers in my shop and I use the Ryobi (the HP ryobis-trust me, they’re not the same as the older ryobis) because I like them best. I’m not getting paid to use them, I just grab them first when reaching for a drill because of all those in my shop, they’re my favorite-price aside.

    Great idea to use fencing planks. Did you apply any finish to protect it? I dont like painting, but i was told it is the most durable for outdoor furniture.

    Math nerd....2 seconds later "words are hard" I have never felt so identified in my life hahaha. I studied electronics which is basically math at the end of the day and today at a work meeting I said, words are heard when I tried to say something but missed like 3 or 4 word in just one sentence. Hahaha

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha...I feel like many times the two go hand in hand. Math people are usually not words people and words people are usually not math people. It takes all kinds to make the world go round :) But...just know you aren't alone--that sounds like something I would do haha

    Hey Shara, when you sand the fence pickets did you start with a particular grit? Perhaps 80, then 120? On the bench seat I might turn the boards to a 30 degree angle. That way, no gap.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just sanded everything here with 120. I usually go up to 220 but since this was just an outdoor project, I just did 120.

    Hi Shara, love the project. I’m not too experienced with types of wood but would this project be ok when exposed to the elements? Rain snow etc? Or should I add some type of protective finish to make it last for years?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cedar, and treated woods will last a good while outdoors with or without sealant. I didn’t use any finish here. Some woods are better for use outdoors than others and cedar is a good outdoor option that’s readily available in my area. Other good options are teak, and mahogany but I can’t get it around here.

    Share, what you think, that is the best way to attach legs to the farm table?

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on the design of the table with the apron and legs and top. Usually figure 8 tabs work well
