I think the Korean people could probably survive without K-pop.
But North Korea rule would probably bring the death millions since most South Koreans hate the North Korean government anyways and you know what they do to dissenters in North Korea.

actually the govt did step in and held a lot of meetings in terms of exempting bts from the military (ofc due to the money they’re bringing) even tho bts themselves didn’t asked for the exemption. It’s also the reason why the oldest member of bts couldn’t go for a long time.

Those saying it's making an example make no sense.
So many people get exemptions for doing less than what BTS have done. It wasn't fair, and it has never been about fairness. If BTS don't deserve an exemption, NOBODY does.

The South Korean government is probably trying to set an example through this. BTS might not be making propaganda but simply the act of them serving the same as any other male itself sends a strong message to South Korea's citizens.

Actually, BTS decided to go exactly to take the power of the decision away from the SK government. The gov had been debating their exemption since 2018/2019 and they always wanted to see more of BTS' impact, saying they were gonna decide after the boys had done enough for their country (even though they are the biggest artists South Korea has even seen coming from there). So they just got tired of being used as pawns and announced they were going without even giving a warning to the government beforehand. More so because they never said they wouldn't go, they never asked for exemption, the only thing they've always said about the topic was "we will go when called upon", so the whole discourse only got them hated for absolutely no reason.
But yes, I agree with you, they will be used as propaganda even if they don't want to and it does send a strong message to everyone, even though not a positive one for South Korea.

The government has spent this entire year arguing back and forth on whether the group should be exempt or not. BTS then took it upon themselves to announce at the end of their concert in Busan that they will all be enlisting starting with the oldest member Jin. The enlistment period is 18 months, they will reunite in 2025

@@arnowisp6244 no, this is basically done for PR. The government definitely was enlisting them, but BTS stating that they would be enlisting is done to increase their fanbase and respect for the individuals. Korean here.
    1. It's actually 1.5 years (18 months).
    2. Things did not go well for celebrities who evaded service (ex. Steven Yoo - got U.S. citizenship, banned from entering Korea for more than 20 years)
    3. All things are based on law. The government cannot exempt certain people from military service without any legal reason. There is currently no law to exempt KPOP stars from military service despite their popularity. On the otherhand, there are laws that provide exemption to sports stars who have won medals in international games. Current discussions are focused more on scrapping this law favoring sports stars, not the other way around.
    4. They would probably bring Korea more money than any other celebrities combined while they're all in the military.
    5. Unless they're sent to the border (which is highly unlikely), things are not bad inside the barracks, especially when they are BTS.
    6. Celebrities who completed service have maintained their fame, as will BTS for sure.

But because of the government are afraid to lose their income, the BTS and BigHit entertainment got hate from South Korean men because they thought the members tried to avoid doing their service.

    • @jennakimjeon8446
      @jennakimjeon8446 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

This is completely wrong and here's why. Hybe has actually tried to exempt their enlistment by submitting tons of documentation of their contributions to their country (Jin recently got his back since he was going anyway). BTS has always said they would do the military service and never they want to do it. No one in their right mind would want to put their very successful careers on hold to do unnecessary stuff. The current president of SK along with various Chaebol (rich families) sons have gotten exemption even without doing absolutely nothing for their country while BTS brings in Billions yearly, directly. I don't remember the name but this one footballer was exempted bc he was able to get a goal medal and if we follow the same reasoning BTS should be given the same exemption. The whole reason BTS are going now is bc Jin is going to be 30 and since the government isn't going to help they have nothing else to do. Cuz be serious if there's a war I'm pretty sure BTS won't be sent to the front lines immediately.

@@migukmystic3940 How is it a PR move to do something that is legally required? Jin already postponed his enlistment because of the Busan concert and went in during a worse season because of it. The others have enlisted at the relatively same time because it makes sense for them to have as small of a window of inactivity as possible. Just because most other idol groups don't value the group enough to enlist earlier than mandatory does not mean it's not the best strategy. It's just that in most groups they prioritise personal gain over the whole. I'm not saying it's wrong, just that BTS has always put the group first and they continue to do so. Also, this was a no-win situation for them. If they got exempted and didn't enlist they would not hear the end of it for the rest of their lives even though people at the top of their fields in other artistic and sports-related areas have exceptions made.

The possibility of an exemption has been under study for years at this point, which is why it's been delayed for so long (Jin, the oldest member, is way past the normal age for people to enroll). I'm fairly sure both their company and the South Korean government were pushing for an exemption, for obvious financial reasons. However the BTS members themselves stated again and again that they wanted to serve like anyone else and that it was important to them.

BigHit and BTS themselves did not ask for exemption. They got brought up and granted delay by the govt bc of their Cultural Merit award, but KOMCA and other companies used them as basis towards negotiating for exemption for their own idols. BigHit and BTS themselves were not part of these talks, and the govt essentially dragged this out so BigHit and BTS just went ahead and decided for themselves instead of just being used for this exemption debate that the sk govt had no intentions to actually enact.

The reason why they remove the "entertainer/service" is to make sure there is a sense of "equality" when it comes to who's serving, that all are subjected to serve without exemption. If they roll this back for BTS, then they would have to do the same for the other bands that got enlisted too. The backlashes would be too much.

It doesn't require much effort to plot a timeline of the past actions and reliably predict the future temper tantrums of the North. Only the uninformed are concerned. It's more of a nationalistic reason rather than economic. The "celebrity" division in military was also really controversial due to some scandals (i.e. getting a prostitute, skipping off the duty time, etc etc), which highlights the inequality of treatment within the military. The common people are already furious enough of chaebol families skipping the military duty through those loopholes. So, why would they think that entitled young entertainers like BTS must be exempted from the military?
Therefore, it would be a huge political crisis for the current gov't if they support the exemption for BTS. It already caused some PR troubles for some MPs a year ago for supporting the exemption for BTS. So, they must be really wary now.

Because there are other entertainers that have gotten exemptions before - people such as athletes and classical musicians - so it actually wouldn't have been a stretch at all for BTS to receive one as well, considering that contributed much more both economically and sociopolitically than those other people. But that's frankly irrelevant; BTS has always wanted to fulfill their duty regardless of what anyone else wanted from them

Anyone remember Heung min Son's close call with mandatory military service in Korea? He was a couple months away from his mandatory service, but thankfully due to a loophole in Korean law which allowed sports people who had won a major accolade would be awarded a "pass" on their military service due to their sporting achievements and for promoting Korean sports and culture. The guy was playing inthe champions league, the premier league, and had played football in Germany also, he's a super star in korea, and even with all of that he was still set to serve for the military....if it wasn't for the Asian games ..
