I had a black ‘89 GTA from 1992 to 1998 in the UK. It was imported brand new by a business owner and mostly garaged, was like new with 18,000 miles on it. It was the L98 350 motor, tan leather interior, t-tops, steering wheel controls but analogue dials. Absolutely fantastic car that I babied, only modification I made was putting a Flowmaster exhaust system on it. Was planning on doing a 383 stroker build but emigrated to the USA in January 1999.
I just sold my red 1989 GTA hardtop a few months ago. Looked just like this one except I had light tan interior and did not have the digital gauges. It was gorgeous and sold it to a friend of mine. I still have a 1992 GTA hardtop that was sent to SLP by the dealer for a full SLP mod done to it, an 89 GTA t-top roller project, and a rare 88 GTA notchback.
@@CarsShopsAndCollections yeah, I think there were just a little over 700 factory authorized GTA notchbacks produced in 1988 and less than ten early 1989 model GTAs got the notchback. I am not sure if I can save the one I got. It only has around 130k on it, but it sat up for over a decade with a locked up motor and rats ate a good bit of the engine wiring harness.
I have 88 GTA more than 16 years and I love that thing! Mine came with 5 speed manual transmission, T-tops and digital dash and currently I'm instaling new 350 TPI crate engine.
I had a red 88 GTA just like this one. Mine however used to overheat all the time if I was stuck in traffic . I would have to make sure that I was never bumper to bumper with the car in front of me. Even so, this is still my favorite car that I ever owned.
That's the Soul-Glo Trans Am(minus the T-Tops) from Coming to America! In 1988, that was an expensive car, guys with $ bought them. 1988 was the last year before Pontiac started fiddling with the nose on the Firebird, making it not as pretty IMO. Beautiful T/A!
Actually, the revision to the nose (and side, and tail lights, and spoiler) came in 1991. The GTA was basically visually the same from 1987-1990, aside from very rare Euro-style paddle mirrors in 1987. And the uber rare notchback hatch from 1987-1988.
My '88 was burnt cherry metallic, black interior, 5.0 / 5-speed. Wanted the 5.7, but couldn't get it with a manual, and if you get a "muscle" car, it's gotta have a manual! The t-tops were a disappointment. Hardly took 'em off after the first year, and started leaking. Wasn't crazy about the digital dash. Biggest problem I had was with that stupid anti-theft resistor on the key. Every time it rained, it would go into security mode and I'd have to wait 10-minutes to try re-starting it, and then another 10-minutes, and so on and so on.....😫 Dealership could never figure out that problem.
My first car was a 76 Trans Am in White back in 83. I still was a 79 for some odd reason I like the second bandit car better. I remember them new around my neighborhood then and I couldn’t have one making $3 an hour at an Italian bread bakery 🤣
I Had a Red and Silver 88 Firebird Formula, with the 5 speed in it. And I managed to drive seven passenger's in it, from Castro Valley, to Berkley CA once. Had 4 friends in the back seat, Two Young Lady's sitting the front, And my Other buddy that lost Paper, Rock, Scissors' Jammed in with all the tools and an empty paint can in the trunk. How I only managed to get 3 tickets in that thing was some kind of miracle.... Then one day, my Sister barrowed it, got 3 blocks from the house, and spun it into a pole. I miss that car.
Beautiful car I bought an 89 brand new in 11th grade same color but mine was 5 speed and had t tops. I got my first speeding ticket in this car 138MPH I lost my license in it for 6 months.
It is what it is about the square gauges digital layout and steering wheel control but the engine and outside looks ,interior of the car make up for that plasticy hasbro kids button game design debacle .

I have a white one. Mom bought brand new, it had 2,700 miles on it when i got it in 03. Its got i think 4,200 on it now. Changed oil twice and didn't look used. Had to put new tires on because they literally had ch lat spots. Never seen rain ever. Love my Pontiac. That red sure is pretty great video ❤
I had a 1988 Trans Am black with grey interior. It had a 350 with a automatic. I had the same gold honeycomb rims. I sure miss T-top cars. Those pop up headlights were so cool. I had the car for 3 years. And put 75,000 miles on it. One of the best cars that I ever owned.

They had the exact same hood as the GTA in this video those years & the Chicken fits perfectly between the 4 vents on the hood. Darn this video!!!!!!! I had a triple black 1989 GT with the 5.7. It was not the GTA, but the Trans Am GT special ordered with the 5.7. T-Tops and everything! All I did was installed headers on her and a "chip," tune which helped make the car stay in 4th gear while WOT. Wow - his dash looks odd! Mine had the huge 4 round gauges across the dash - looked like I was in a fighter jet. I NEVER should've sold her!!!!! 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
You think this one is nice. My neighbors dad has one I believe it’s an 86 or 87 he bought it brand new I believe it has under 20k miles probably has the original tires. The cleanest one I’ve ever seen. My neighbor was in high school when his parents bought it
Pretty sure he's wrong about the stolen radio shutting down the car. If you take the radio out or if it loses power, it will lock. This was supposed to deter theft. If it's in the car, the "mute" button on the steering wheel unlocks it. So if someone stole it that doesn't have the GTA steering wheel controls (or Pontiac 6000 and Bonneville), the radio stays locked. If Ron wants his original radio repaired, M&R Electronics of Saginaw, MI. I sent mine there. They'll do a good job for a good price and return it to you quickly. The original radio is the only head unit that will work with those steering wheel controls, which were actually a new thing back in the late 1980s.
When I start up a video by a small creator and they start into "like and subscribe" before 30 seconds have even passed, I downvote and leave. People can figure out how to do that; you don't have to tell them. Want an example? Matt's Off-Road Recovery.
Built Camaros and Firebirds at C-P-C Van Nuys. Worked on the trim line upstairs from late 86 to 89. Seeing your car Ron, and how much you enjoy it puts a big smile on my face. Cool no T-Tops. Durning those times the line was running about 3 Camaros, A firebird, then 3 more Camaros One year every 7th car usually a Camaro went to Japan. Without looking at the build sheet you could tell by the Dumbo size side mirrors. The GTA's were in my option the top product rolling out the door. Recaro seats were prebuilt, so the seat assembly people just had to unbox and stick on the conveyer. The year we built the white turbo V-6's was unique. They left our location and were fully tuned at the location that install the convertible topped cars. The black-on-black GTA's were just wicked. The L98 was the hot ticket back then. To those who knew it was the turbo V-6. but those were limited. After our area they went down to body marriage, that was really amazing to watch. True teamwork of 4 people. Back then new owners were allowed to watch their car being assembled. From body assembly all the way to final roll out to the PMT line for delivery. That wasn't a daily thing, but maybe once a month. Ron, I hope you have miles of smiles with your GTA. .
I don’t know about ahead of its time, my friend, every single car in that time period had all that. LOL i’ll tell you this if you had a GTA or Iroc Z back them days you were a king and hated by the mustang community that would smoke you in every race lol but the T/A’s were much nicer to drive

When you rotate the tires on this car, you literally have to rotate the tires & not the wheels. Off set wheels on the rear. GTA owners & the tire shop are quite familiar with this model

If only you could get it back!!!
this was my first car when i was 17 wish is was not taken by the police.
AH! What a great first car!!!!!
enki had those wheels! great.
IROC hands down. The GTA is to gimmicky looking especially the interior. The Camaro is so much cleaner with a race look.
Nice that Ron was a retired police officer enjoying his GTA! Thank you for your service Ron!
Super cool dude! I’m glad we got to do the episode!
Gorgeous car.
Outside of a Callaway Corvette and Recaro Trans Am this might be my favorite.
The radio didn't shut down the car. The mute button on the steering wheel controls Needs to work to be able to unlock the radio.
Ron, I hope you have miles of smiles with your GTA.
.
This is amazing!! You were part of automotive history!!! If you are ever in Las Vegas let me know… it would be fun to have you along for an episode!

Heck yeah! Manifest it! Ron is a great guys and it was a fun one to film!
I don’t know about ahead of its time, my friend, every single car in that time period had all that. LOL i’ll tell you this if you had a GTA or Iroc Z back them days you were a king and hated by the mustang community that would smoke you in every race lol but the T/A’s were much nicer to drive
Those were cool cars no doubt esp with the red and gold combo but for me and the 80s? A 1987 Buick GNX..... black paint and turbo
I was 17 in 88 my dream car at the time was a white gta with gold wheels they were the shit back then
The white was classic!!!

We did a ride along and it was awesome!
When you rotate the tires on this car, you literally have to rotate the tires & not the wheels. Off set wheels on the rear. GTA owners & the tire shop are quite familiar with this model
4 new paint jobs 1500 each and all dealer mqintaned up utill i got it for free 2012
The ‘89 TTA is cooler. Way cooler.
Maybe we need to do a comparison Episode!
