Blondie English Boys from The Hunter
Definitive upload HQ (the other clip on youtube is a compressed rip of my original upload) of rarely seen music video for shelved single from The Hunter. Shown once only on french tv in 1982. This is the best quality I can get from the source. (The other version is a compressed rip of my original upload, this is much clearer)

There were a few songs by Blondie that pushed even their own boundaries. I think this is one. They were so much more than 'just another rock band'. They completely shaped and molded a generation. Their ripple will be felt in the music world forever. Legend.

This song has a VERY SPECIAL place in my heart.... When I was 21, I drove my Daddy and my Mama, along with my oldest sister to Duke University in North Carolina. Daddy was going to have treatment for his cancer, and I was listening to "The Hunter". This was the song I listened to before going out the door and making that journey.... I still remember as if it was yesterday, instead of being 15 years ago.

I admire their professionalism. Everything was falling apart. And yet they managed an under-rated last album, and personal, troubling times. I will always be impressed and awed by their ability to "Blondiesize" different styles of music. Of course I'm in my 50's and now understand things I couldn't before. They were/are ahead of their time. This is just this old man's opinion. much love.

Technically, the last song on the last (original-era) album was a cover of "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game," but because this was the last one written by band members, I think of it as the Last Blondie Song. The short coda at the end may not be anything special, music-wise, but it feels very Blondie and a fitting ending for the band. It always makes me think of the beginning of "Sunday Girl" and the end of "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence Dear."

I discovered Blondie on 10/10/12 , it was on my dad's birthday. My dad had passed away some years. I think my dad gave me Blondie as a present. That was a
twist. I remember a couple of songs some years ago " The Tide Is High " and " Call
Me " but that was all. I think Blondie was an east coast thing. At that time there
were many great rock-groups and they just blotted out Blondie, rock-groups like the
Beatles - Rolling Stones - Sunny and Cher, I would always hear those rock-groups
on the radio. I remember when I first time I heard a Blondie song " The Tide Is High "
I thought the Blondie band was from Tijuana, Mexico. The music had that spanish
    flare to it.

I have a feeling this was inspired by John Lennon's death. This song was recorded the year after he died. And it has a feeling of regret. The sad thing is that they were going to meet John and Yoko sometime later in December 1980 because John was a huge Blondie fan and they had a mutual friend in photographer Bob Gruen who was going to arrange it.

When I was seventeen I saw a magazine.
It had those English boys who had long hair.
When I was on my own they moved into my town,
And I just called 'em up and they'd be there.
    In 1969 I had a lousy time.
I listened to the songs, read letters sent from Nam.
Now peace and love were gone, the tired soldiers home.
Ideal society gunned down the seventies.
Does it feel the same to you?
Why do you act the way you do?
Pack it up or pack it in.
    There's no excuse.
Could the hands of time reverse?
Would we wake or take the ride
And again speak with one voice?
We knew each other well although we never met.
Messages passed to tell equal respect.
    Coincidence recurred.
I had to laugh a lot.
One week hung up superb, said maybe not.

@RobotronZone Chris Stein was the one who really had it in for Frankie. Though of course I wasn't there, apparently Chris was very, very jealous ( due to insecurity?) of Frankie's hot guitar prowess and had issues over it (according to producer Mike Chapman, who had told Chris to get over it). Unlike Gary Valentine, who constantly vied for the spotlight and was fired because of it, Frankie was always content to be the guitarist on the side. Perhaps, there were personality conflicts as well.

@MrTraherne-Chris Stein got noticeably ill in late 1980 and by 82 everyone thought he had AIDS it had gotten so bad. He had to take oxygen during their final tour. It had a profound effect on Debbie. Even before the illness really emerged you would read articles where he was always in bed. It's probably why they stopped touring after early 1980. That caused a lot of friction. Koo Koo was a gold record, very arty. If she wanted a commercial album she would have worked with Moroder.

I wonder why they made a video for this and not War Child, which was released as a single. That aside, they were really unluclky with the singles from The Hunter because of the war in the Falklands. UK radio gave limited airplay to Island Of Lost Souls, and War Child received next to none. I heard on a podcast (Phonogenics 101, which cover all the Blondie albums) that they pulled this because it might also be associated with the war. I think it would have been a big hit. Danceway could also have been a single.

      @RedGreenBluePig 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @tideoftime
      @tideoftime 9 ปีที่แล้ว

RedGreenBluePig That's funny that you can hear the similar points between "Call Me" and Friday the 13th, but you can't hear the similarity between EB and WMUWSE. Granted, Friday has both a similar melody (at points) as well as having the same proportional tempo (if you slow the "speed-metal" factor, it's almost in-sync with CM), whereas the WM... only has the single point of similarity. Still, though, I'm surprised you can't hear the similarity, loose as it may be.

@HarryPotter87 Yeah, I would just put it down to MTV as well as the 80's really kicking in by 1982.

@JohnnyTheWolfLupino It would've been their farewell single. It's indeed a very touching song.

Yes things were over, but at one point Chrysalis were going to put out English Boys and use this tv performance as the "video"

Blondie wasn't even "Blondie" anymore when they released "The Hunter." By then, Berlin and Missing Persons overshadowed Blondie by taking over the airwaves.

Thanks for sharing, but I'm not sure this is much better quality than the first version.
It's not a "video" - it's from "Top Pop" (AVRO in The Netherlands)

I know by this point they were going to split up and the hunter has been always painted by the music press as an album half hearted lacking in direction and so on i find some aspects of it deserve much more merit not least this one great lyrics.

no Frank = a sham. How much better an album could "The Hunter" have been with some tracks from Infante? sheesh. (I like the album overall, but it's hardly up there with others from Blondie).

+HCIKFS1 Well, we don't know the whole story. There are others in this band who weren't exactly the best friends one can have.

As jas22 says, there are two sides to every story, and I wouldn't trust the remaining band members' side to be anything other than partisan.
I say this having seen a documentary on Blondie around the time of their reformation that essentially whitewashed Nigel Harrison and Frank Infante out of their history. As in, IIRC, they weren't even mentioned at all- not even in passing- the only clue to their existence being inevitable (and unacknowledged) brief appearances in the background of archive clips.
I remember this because it became increasingly jarring as I watched. I wasn't even aware of the bad blood between them at the time, and even then it was obvious they were attempting to rewrite things to suit themselves in an officially-sanctioned documentary and that there was only one explanation for a would-be Stalinist purge.
Regardless of who was in the right or wrong, I lost way more respect for Harry et al than I'd even have done if they'd mentioned them in disrespectful passing, a simple acknowledgement that they were former members they were (or had been) in dispute with.
FWIW, Debbie Harry doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would be particularly tolerant of anyone who got on the wrong side of her. Don't know whether that applies to the other band members as I don't know enough about them.

Pour moi tu es la plus jolie fille du monde, celle dont les cris effacent les ciels de grisaille, celle dont la voix sonne comme un violoncelle. Si tu savais qu'aucune fille au monde ne fait virevolter comme toi.
