Charles Nelson Reilly appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson over 100 times and gave that show some of it's best interviews. He was hilariously witty.

I read where CNR lived literally blocks from where the Tonight Show was staged, allowing him to be almost “on call” in case a scheduled guest had to bail.
And you are correct. He always delivered.

The one thing that is just as funny as Charles Nelson Reilly is watching Alec Baldwin play Charles Nelson Reilly.

Weird Al (when he was doing "CNR") said CNR was a little offended by this portrayal, but... it's spot on. The sketch isn't even about CNR. It's about how bombastic James Lipton was.

For anyone who doesn't know Charles Nelson Reilly I suggest tracking down his autobiographical one-man show (and "Weird Al" Yankovic's tribute song "CNR")

1:18-1:21 little did they know Alwc Baldwin would then voice Dennis from Spongebob Squarepants the Movie after portraying Charles Nelson Reilly. I only say this because Charles Nelson played as the Dirty Bubble in Spongebob also very good impression Alec Baldwin does as Charles Nelson Reilly.

In all seriousness: stop what youre doing right now and stream "Life of Reilly," which is Charles Nelson Reilly's autobiographical one-man stage show that he performed in 2004. It is absolutely, undeniably wonderful, perfectly written and delivered, fucking hilarious, and a devestating punch right to the gut of your humanity. I don't have enough words for how awesome and deeply moving it is. I had it on DVD, but last I checked you can stream it on Amazon Prime and TH-cam. It's so, so, so, so good.
