      I think it’s more the story of them being distributed at Military bases and the fact that they are hard to find that makes
      Them interesting to collect for some collectors.

    To mark them after you bag them in the long box take a colored sharpie and drag it across the top. Easy to see in hand and in box. Nice to see and imagine the sharing and travels they been thru.

      @@pop-comics The comments about you overpaying, overlook the fact that a collection of Mark jewelers walked into your shop. It might take someone years just to buy that many issues. You got them in one buy. I think you paid a fair price, you were happy and the seller was happy. You had a collector mindset that day. Even the books that weren't Mark Jewelers, you had some keys.

    Hey Pop Comics! Great video :D Transformers absolutely do have Mark Jeweler Inserts (MJI) - I collect them specifically. Interestingly, they were included all the way up to issue 79 (of 80) which was released in 1991. You mentioned they stopped around 1984 I think. They were also present in the 70s. Did you end up finding any Transformers issues with MJI in the end? I didn't have a chance to watch the second half of the video yet but I'd love to buy any that you have if they're on my list. Awesome collection!

      Transformers issues would be cool to collect with MJ inserts. I thought there was 1 in the collection, but it was the wrong comic inside the cover lol I think the person who bought these comics was in the military from 1980-84, so all the issues after that did not have the inserts because he was not on the base buying them there any more.

    To keep comics in good condition, would you recommend using a board with a slightly larger width than the comic, or a board with the same width as the comic? Thanks

    • @pop-comics
      @pop-comics  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A little larger is good, I tend to use Silver Age for both modern and silver age books. What I like about using that size, is if you use regular size and silver age size you might end up putting pressure ridges on your comics in a tight box if some comics end up with boards that press against a book .

      Yeah that was kinda my thinking, if I sell 500 of the non insert books for $2-$3 average that's $1000-$1500 Early 80s books even the bad ones do pretty well for me. So that lets me keep the Jeweler books for $2-$4 each which feels super cheap on them. And I know the key issue box has a bunch in the $30-$200 range.

    The Mark Jewelers insert was from my understanding exclusive to military bases oversees. Nice collection, i just bought a collection of uncanny x men a couple of weeks ago which were only like 30 books but half of them were mark jewelers, however, the whole thing smells of mold sadly enough so i do not know what to do with them.

    • @pop-comics
      @pop-comics  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. Is there signs of mold growth or is it just a strong musty odor without the stains? If its just a strong odor there are things you can do to mitigate it. I would research it but things like airing out the books some, (Blowing a fan on a book that is open etc) Placing paper towels between each page and letting it sit for a month can help absorb the smell. Sealing in a container with baking soda to help absorb the smell (Not directly on the pages though that is a mess). I have had some success with all those methods. In nicer weather a little sunshine on each page for an hour or two can help as well

      There is not but my point is a high grade Hulk 181 in a 9.8 is worth $90-100K a Mark Jewelers ASM 252 is $250K Its a rarer more valuable book. A low grade 181 still has value, so does low to mid grade grade MJ keys. As for the more oddball stuff, it looks like all of them are easily $10-$20 in a 6.0 or better, the lower grade ones maybe $5. But I am certain there will be something that is harder to find in this collection with a crazy price.

      I feel I paid a very fair price for what the collection was, probably about half the value for the insert issues and then the none insert issues were cheap or near free.

    I'm sorry, but I don't resonate with the Mark Jewelers hype. I know what they are, but unless the book is already a key, it's only an advertisement and not something I care much about. Based on the condition, one can only conclude that folks apparently have deeper pockets than others. I'm still a big Pop Comics fan, lol.

    • @pop-comics
      @pop-comics  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Rare versions of comics is not for everyone. Some people just want key issues, or top grade comics, or just a mid grade copy to read. Others enjoy the idea of rarer books that are hard to find. Definitely not for everyone, but I myself love comic history and collecting different versions of comics. I think MJ books are kinda neat! Also in my case it is not about having deeper pockets, but knowing and finding value that others might ignore and think trivial and using that knowledge to find things to sell that help you keep the ones you want for your PC for free.

    Sorry but I don't understand the Mark Jewelers hype. I know what they are but it's only an add people. Why pay more for it?? Don't get me wrong, you can buy what you want but it's not something I search out. I think you overpaid though. I hope you can get your money out of them.

    • @pop-comics
      @pop-comics  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      People pay high dollar for 9.8 copies of comics because its harder to get them in the higher grade. I personally don't get paying 3 times the value of a 9.6 because a comic has one less hairline mark on it that you need a magnifying glass to see. But there are collectors that will pay that premium. I don't need to understand the hype to know that the 9.8s sell for more. In most cases there are less Jewelers copies out there then there are 9.8 graded copies of the regular ones so they are rare. Regardless of opinion the select collectors who collect them pay a premium, in some cases a huge premium. Rare things are not for every collector, but I enjoy finding and collecting rare things because its a challenge and not easy to do. The challenge is fun for me.

      Also did you know the famous Honus Wagner Baseball Card people pay a fortune for, well there are several versions of the card and the only difference between them is an ad on the back of the card. Its just and ad difference and people pay millions for it because of the rarity.
