I play tennis, and I am very much impressed with how many relevant videos there are in the baseball world regarding watching the ball -- including this one, of course. The "window" idea, when applied to the racket, works very nicely to give an earlier jump on where the ball is going to come from (and how it is going to be hit as well). Looking away at something and, then, returning to the pitcher (server) to make sure both eyes are engaged is a great hint. The head position and balance/shift info is, of course, common to both sports as well. I don't know exactly what someone with great eyesight sees relative to seams on the ball as it is coming in, but I'll try a little harder to see what I can see when hitting later today.

This helped me alot, Im a 14 year old centerfielder that plays alright, I have really good hand eye coordination when on the field, and even up to bat with some of my friends. Something I can't get over, though. Is that whenever I do get hits, they are either fouls or bombs down center. I am very inconsistent when looking for the ball. I am going to try out for a travel team and this was really, really helpful. Not only am I more consistent, but I also got an infield homerun that hit the fence which was around 300 yards away! Even my position on the batting order also went up. Thank You!

I really like how you simple things to just seeing the ball and looking at the pitcher. I do tend to just focus on just the swing but not even looking at the pitcher with both eyes.

All of this advice is accurate for seeing the ball clearly. I played third base for my team, and due to injuries they needed someone to close the game. Coach called on me to pitch, and I had literally 0 experience as a pitcher. I was our 4 hitter and knew what I liked at the plate so I used reverse psychology. I threw sidearm, 3-quarters, and overhand and altered my timing on all my pitches to home plate. My goal was to make seeing the ball and timing it tough while throwing strikes. When you got a guy on his front foot or giving up on a swing before it ever reached home plate you ended up with a lot of strikeouts or weak ground balls. Went from no experience to a closer to a starting pitcher in 1 season. Started with only a 4 seam fastball and ended up having a 2 seam, curve, change up, and knuckle ball. (knuckle ball was mostly used during warm ups. Just the fact that they knew it could be a possible pitch kept them nervous and guessing at the plate)

Doug, With your psychometric profile and teaching ability, you would have made a fantastic orthodontist. It is interesting how so many professionals in the dental field have a passion and understanding of baseball. Especially, those working in orthodontia. My kid's orthodontist has your precise pattern and is the ortho to the Texas Rangers. Thanks for being part of that interesting observation.

GREAT STUFF DOUG. STANTON NEEDS TO WATCH THIS VIDEO... HE IS SO CLOSED UP..
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A POWER HITTER WITH A CLOSED STANCE LIKE HIS BEFORE ?? NO
HE PICKS UP THE BALL TO LATE.. HE HAS TO MOVE ALL THAT MASS FOR AN INSIDE CORNER FAST BALL AND CANNOT... POPS IT UP...
IF HE OPENED HIS STANCE TO EVEN PARALLEL HE WOULD HIT BETTER ...

Great stuff actually, my son has been having trouble last 2 seasons, in practice he crushes the ball but in games he slumps. Everybody kept saying he’s only 9/10 years old he’ll be fine but I was definitely seeing a difference in games, He would crush it when he made contact but very inconsistent. Working on 2 of your 5 right now(#1 n #5) so definitely going to give you a update, he’s got a 9am game Sunday 07/10/22 let’s see how he does. He’s got tons of power so it’s just his timing n seeing the ball, he hit the ball out at 9 so.

There is another part of the equation that no one addresses. Which one of one's eyes is dominant, left or right? Example; if a person bats right and his left eye dominate more than likely his timing of the bat swing and location of the ball is improved versus the same hitter that would be right eye dominate. The same vice versa if one bats left and is right dominate their location of the ball and timing of their bat swing is more naturally acute.

My daughter (11th grade, playing softball on an 18u A team, varsity starting catcher (actually THE catcher), great athlete. This past fall her travel team attended a big showcase and her hitting was so bad she cried on the way home for the first time in a very long time (new team and all i think added to her self-consciousness). So on the hour drive home i hit youtube looking for anything i can to help her. One thing of note here - she is a true lefty. She throws left and shoots guns with her left eye so she’s also left eye dominant. She emulated all the rightys in t-ball and it didn’t even occur to us - yes we knew she was left-handed by then - that she was batting on the wrong side. Still she was the only kid that never had to use to tee, the best hitter always until about 8th grade when the pitches started coming fast and we have no idea what happened - her hitting was horrible. She gets a good one off every now and then but she only has ever hit one out of the park home run and that was in 10th grade. She practices hitting lefty, her coaches tell her she has way less bad habits in her form when she hits left but she lacks the power in her swing compared to her righty swing that she’s been doing for 10 years now. But she’s still had some good hits lefty in games, its just she rarely does it bc she feels better hitting righty bc she’s been doing it her whole life. Ive been an advocate of ditching righty all together for years now but no one will listen to me. So she strikes out looking or just strikes out swinging half the time. Its a shame bc she’s so aggressive once she gets on base, slides head first most of the time so she can make sure her hand is on the base, esp if the defensive player is blocking the base. Her varsity coach calls her a menace out there 😂. So she’s crying and mad after day one of the showcase and i found this video in the car and when we got home i said watch this. She was so upset she protested and was mad at me - still crying - for forcing her to watch it. As soon as he said we all know that guy thats launching balls in practice but in games he couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat she goes “can you turn it more towards me so i can see it?” She watched the whole thing in silence. In fact, when i said something she made me back it up bc she was afraid she missed something. She is still using the head towards the 3rd base coach tactic, not so much watching the ball leave the pitchers hand. We talked about it today because the next day after watching this video her hitting was HUGELY improved! She was really surprised and so was I! She actually started getting some confidence back. She’s got a bownet and tees and a bucket of balls in the garage, a ball return, everything she needs (well i guess none of those help you see the ball coming at you better). She has always been a Yadi fan (we’re from St. Louis) and I asked her if she can identify a pitch without a call as its leaving the pitchers hand and she said “sometimes” - shouldn’t this be a key skill for a varsity catcher? Or is it a bit early for that? I told her practicing that skill when you are catching will help you to do the same thing when you are hitting. But I’m not a coach so she thinks i don’t know anything.
Thank you for this video. Thank you for not shoving the concept down the viewers’ throats, but instead saying “…at least for me…” often enough that it made her stop and think, hmm, me too? Thank you for starting out the video with a story about how you are human too, you struggled too, and you had an epiphany that changed the game for you. She needed to hear that. Thank you for not coming across as the only authority and my way is the only way and I’m better than everyone else so do like I say. For being a real relatable person. She needed that more than you know. She needs to stop falling back into habits - muscle memory - and realize if it doesn’t feel weird you’re not changing anything. She’s about to be a senior and i just hope she can fix things before long. But her hitting has improved by at least 50% just by making sure both eyes are on the pitcher. We need to work on the other tips still but she wanted to watch it again today and asked me to send it to her.

    • @kaarman1
      @kaarman1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

She just started focusing on that release window the last couple weeks and hit an out of the park home run the other night and another one bounced once then teetered on the top of the fence before falling back into the field but it was soo close. She’s having to watch this video and focus on each step separately - she’s gotta perfect one tip at a time. I missed her home run but her almost home run watch her her head look to the left then back to the pitcher. Shes been doing that for a month or so. Here shes just begun watching that window and she says it’s almost like it’s in slow motion. Amazing!

im frustrated with baseball, i have not felt comfortable at the plate for YEARS ive been hitting the ball off the end of the bat or on the handle mainly because my timing is all out in front. its watching the ball for the last 10 feet that im struggling with. normally i would be stroking a clean .400 but im finding myself earning .300 by legging it out. i feel like i let my team down last night because the coach put in this new kid in at my position who caused 4 unearned runs. im angry because that should never have happened, even with my batting issues. i can tell whats going wrong because i am not seeing the ball at the point of contact and everything i am hitting is out in front.

    Doug,
    Great video!
These steps will go perfectly with what we have developed...
a “Timing” Machine that an MLB team is wanting to put throughout its system.
When you say seeing the baseball is pushed to the back burner, so juvenile...well this team doesn’t think so.
Our timing machine combines vision training with batting practice and I believe this area of training based on this teams excitement will be the next big thing after the Sabermetrics revolutions. Contact me through .www.BreakoutHitting.com if interested.

All this tee training destroys hitters ability to hit pitches in game.
