I’ve been into audio for over 50 years and even with diminishing hearing (getting old) I’m I hearing incredibly realistic sound popping out of my speakers since buying my B200s. And I’ve owned lots of amplifiers, including tubed. I think they are pretty special.
Hi @Tharbamar, do you think that Dali speakers, particularly Oberon 5, are in bright category speakers? I would pairing them with two of these B200, using a Lyngdorf TDAI 1120 as preamp, but if you sais that we must to be attention to avoid the bright speakers I'm on a crossroads of decisions and don't know what to do. @@net_news When fosi V3 can, there is no reason this one's can't. The issue is however how well it sounds. My V3's sound good nearfield on easy to drive speakers with kind impedance behaviour. They go into distortions and clipping when the load is difficult and not even at especially high spl. Good measurements without good power handling means you should be careful with what speakers you put them on.

I have expensive power amps to use with the Maggies (Bryston, Pass, PrimaLuna,ecc) but I love to try cheap class d amps to find the holy grail and recommend it to people making the jump to the Maggies easier. I tried the LA90s, the Crown XLS and both can move them very well the only problem is you lose the soundstage depth that's why I want to try other cheap class d amps until I find the perfect one to help people and make Maggies more popular and affordable. ❤️

Compared vs quality stuff they lack depth, base, midfield and have an anemic sound. For the record I have both and the V3 crashes so badly on demanding speakers while A75 doesn't break a sweat. The car stereo watts game is back and they are pushed by ChiFi products
Thank you for this review. Do you have any recommendations on good, price appropriate new or used preamps or dacs/streamers with good volume control to match with the B200 MBs? It sounds like the B200 need something with body given your experience with the Schiit Freya +.
It all depends on how picky you are and what the rest of your system is composed of. If you have a revealing system and listen for details, the preamp is the more important piece to get right. I would focus on that first, then the amps. If you're not too picky and like bass and louder volumes, then focus on the amps. That said, comments and reviews can't replace demoing components in your own system. That's the only way to know for certain.

Seems like the only mistake is they priced it too low. I'm really interested in someone to investigate the internals. I've tried Class-D amplification but didn't fall in love with it; I have NCoreX NCx500 monoblocks that are...okay, they sound...pretty good, but there are aspects of soundstage width/depth, bass damping, and placement of images that seem flattened-out compared to my prior Class-AB amp from the mid-1990s, and this is supposedly from the cream of the crop of Class D amplifiers. I am interested to try these amps and maybe even investigate building an ultra high performance outboard power supply for them.
Ncore are just one of many implementations of Class D. Judging Class D based on those is like getting one random set of tube amps and judging all tube amps based on that one amp.
@@cineaudiophile4465 I have had many flavors of Class-D over the years - TI, Tripath, Icepower, Hypex, Nuforce. All of them are quite good, although some are better than others, as one would expect. I still have most of them and I don't feel like I need to throw them all away, but I am keeping my Class-AB amplifiers (Aragon, Hafler, Job, and some chip amps) around for what I perceive as improved soundstage width and height, and more three-dimensional imaging not only side to side, but front to back. I have to conclude that those characteristics might not be directly correlated with conventional audio measurements, or could be related to non-linear performance in those measured aspects, since Class-D can deliver exemplary measured performance - that is not in dispute - but I am hearing something else from Class-AB that is desirable.
Am I missing something or not ! Why can't I see a toroid transformer in each unit ? If there isn't then why ? Since you mentioned the power supply as a possible negative, would you be able to upgrade the existing unit, possibly with an external one ? Many thanks.
PSU is external. They're sat on the floor behind the unit. But, if protection circuitry is over zealous (which it sounds like it is), then upgrading the PSU is unlikely to significantly improve things.
Talking 4:27 about comparing class A/AB power and it not being totally quite due to class d industry wall wart PS. Nothing to do with watts but vs quality of power coming from toroidal transformers in a/ab. Same kind of power source a microwave oven uses. The con is they are heavy, hot, and cost much more in energy to run. Probably 150 watts vs 30 watts and over years costs much more to operate esp in air conditioning based climates. The tradeoffs never end in audio!
@@ropeburn6684 I'm not saying he is right or wrong because I don't know enough about the amp, but your question is valid. Volts x Amps=Watts. Assume for this example you have an amp rated at 100 watts into 8 ohms. 10 volts x 10 amps = 100 watts. 25 volts x 4 amps = 100 watts. 4 volts x 25 amps = 100 watts. I'm sure you see the pattern. The combinations of volts and amps to get 100 watts is practically limitless. All other things being equal, a power amps performance will change depending on the split between amps and volts. In general, the more amps, the more power to drive difficult loads, even if watts are the same. Also, keep in mind that manufacturers are not required to use the same method to rate power, so every company measures their products as they see fit. Take 5 100 watt amps from 5 different manufacturers, measure them all the same way, and every one will be different. How much difference depends on how honest the company is.
Great review! I have been interested in these. Quick take on vs V3 monos? I just got them, but I think they need a nice pre-amp in front of my SMSL 100 pro dac. So got a Topping A90D instead of a pre90 to have an headphone amp and pre amp in this system. So interested in Topping now 😊vs V3M
@@mattmiller4978 What speakers do you use them on? If it's on a light load lower end speaker the upgrade might be minimal. More air, depth and generally fuller sounding is the likely experience. The better the speaker the more obvious differences will be. Why don't you try them at home to compare? Best way to go. Before you decide I recommend testing more products in your price range whatever that is. For me no topping amplification to this date fits what I want. The path to musical blizz usually needs some testing 😉. Currently there are so many interesting amplifier products in the under 2k$ it should be very possible to find something that would make you happy 😃. Good luck 🤞
If you like these amps you should try the Audiolab 8300MB, probably even better, sell for £700 in the UK, they can drive B&W 801 without any strain or struggle. Would love to see a proper review with 8300MB.
I know your speakers very well. If you can't take the highs, just get rid of them. It will be your cheapest and easiest way to go. You can spend a fortune on electronics and still get bad results. If you really want to keep your 801's, I would give Cable Company a call. Any time they send out components and cables to demo, they keep detailed records on the customers opinions, and what they actually purchased, if anything. For example, if you need a pair of speaker cables, they have over 30 years of records and customer comments in their system, and can give a specific cable or brand recommendation based on what their customers were most happy with.
@@sammy10001 8 ohms - 200 watts. 4 ohms - 200 watts These specs are shown in the video. So, these amplifiers seem to be current limited. If so, then they'd likely only make 100 watts into 2 ohms.
Why do Chinese amplifiers use mini-XLR connectors for the DC power feed? This type of connector has small pins with a cross-sectional area that is insufficient for the load current demand of the circuit. The B200 amplifier as a power specification of 200W into 4 Ohms. Assuming this is an RMS Wattage then the speaker load will draw around 7 Amps (RMS). Some of the peak current demand will be delivered by the electrolytic capacitors on the amplifier’s supply rails. However, this energy must be replenished by the external switch-mode power supply. Typically, a good quality mini-XLR connect is limited to less than 5 Amps. This mini-connector is just a bottleneck in the power delivery.
@@crazyprayingmantis5596 The amplifier’s current demand will be determined by the required power output and the speaker impedance. The sensitivity of the speaker determines the sound pressure level in the room for a given drive power. So, if the amplifier design restricts the current drive, it is best matched with a high sensitivity speaker. The selected speakers should have a relatively flat impedance curve with no nasty dips. The B200 is specified at 240 Watts in an 8 Ohm load. In this mode the maximum current demand decreases to 5.5 Amps (RMS). That’s why it is always important to match amplifiers and speakers. The -6dB cut-off point of the speaker will determine the level of bass energy you hear.
They are actually called GX connectors and are used in the aircraft industry. Typically used is the GX16 3-pin which is a very good choice and able to deliver more than sufficient power.
@@fx-studio Thanks for identifying the connector as a GX16-3pin. I have looked at the specification sheets and the contacts are rated at 5 Amps maximum. So, it does not appear to be any better than a mini-XLR connector. The B200 need 7 Amps (rms) and the peak current is likely to be around x4 this level.
@@SteveD-m6z There are different pin configurations available on the GX16 series. So it could be swapped to say a 6 pin and then just double up on the power. Many different types of cable are available as well on Aliexpress. If you can use a soldering iron its an easy job.

Have had these for about 1 month now and the B200 has many good qualities in terms of sound but lacks some energy. Never get the feeling that I have the artists present when I turn up the volume (unlike my Marantz). These are more analytical. A shame as there are a lot of good things about them. I strongly doubt that these hold 200w in 8 ohms, it doesn't sound like that.
@@Tharbamar Hi, yes, I thought the same since it needs power when needed and when I'm up to the maximum volume limit, a lot drops out. Topping should test this out and come up with eg a 10amp power supply and perhaps some larger power capacitors would have helped. Have Swedish Rauna concrete floor-standing speakers in 8ohm and with a sensitivity of 91dB, so is reasonably easy to drive. Otherwise, thanks for your nice TH-cam channel

I wish reviewers would use more challenging music - like some EDM music with 70+ layers and very high recording standards, not these old songs run through x50 1970's NE5532 op amps in the studio.
@@fx-studio I'm in the opposite camp. EDM music hides bad recordings and gear. This is similar to how home theaters with 2+ speakers and playing diaglogue and explosions can hide behind mediocre gear. Instead, I prefer my gear with a lossless streaming source, and I can hear a difference with vocalists and jazz and broadway musicals.
@@mrpmj00 Some recent very well recorded EDM is complex, has a wide bandwidth and is challenging to a sound system. In comparison Jazz and light vocals is easy and can make even a mediocre system seem good. That's why audiophiles like that type of recording. Often those recordings have been made some time ago using studio equipment packed full of 1970's op amps like the NE5532 and TL074, so no way its going to sound great anyway.
Would love to see the power output with a multi-tone test, which is a way better approximation of music than a single frequency. Would be surprised if they put out much more than 5 watts before shutting down...
@@Tharbamar yes, but it's way closer to multi-tone than a 1khz sine wave. Music is dynamic multi-tone. Distortion traces from multi-tone can show significant audible distortion at single digit powers on 100 watt plus amps. It explains why some lower powered amps can play significantly louder than more (on paper) powerful ones. The Wiim amp suffers very badly with this, as do some of the Fossi amps. It also explains why amps that appear to have a flat response and lots of power sound flat, thin and harsh when driving speakers.

The sound demo sounded dry, thin and was fatiguing, they may be able to get 'loud' but to me ultimately they lacked "balls" imo. Am i off my head or am i on the money here?

Ever since you have started using the DMP-8 as your source all of your demos sound bright, unrefined and unmusical. I know you can hear it too so it is puzzling as to why you continue to use it as your DAC.

3 inputs but can only use one input at a time, I don’t think 1DB different in gain would make major difference.

At the Schiit website they say that the Vidar is 200 watts into 4 ohms. I guess one amp would be enough for the Knight 4 ohm 86 db speakers?

What are the other successful implementation of class d's. He gave an example of a top tier product. I don't like class d either. Class A all the way.

PSU is external. They're sat on the floor behind the unit. But, if protection circuitry is over zealous (which it sounds like it is), then upgrading the PSU is unlikely to significantly improve things.
It seems like small amps can bring the watts…but struggle to deliver current due to power supplies that are not as robust as full sized amps.

Talking 4:27 about comparing class A/AB power and it not being totally quite due to class d industry wall wart PS. Nothing to do with watts but vs quality of power coming from toroidal transformers in a/ab. Same kind of power source a microwave oven uses. The con is they are heavy, hot, and cost much more in energy to run. Probably 150 watts vs 30 watts and over years costs much more to operate esp in air conditioning based climates.
The tradeoffs never end in audio!

Assume for this example you have an amp rated at 100 watts into 8 ohms. 10 volts x 10 amps = 100 watts. 25 volts x 4 amps = 100 watts. 4 volts x 25 amps = 100 watts. I'm sure you see the pattern. The combinations of volts and amps to get 100 watts is practically limitless. All other things being equal, a power amps performance will change depending on the split between amps and volts. In general, the more amps, the more power to drive difficult loads, even if watts are the same. Also, keep in mind that manufacturers are not required to use the same method to rate power, so every company measures their products as they see fit. Take 5 100 watt amps from 5 different manufacturers, measure them all the same way, and every one will be different. How much difference depends on how honest the company is.
why did they use TRS balanced inputs ? Does a 3-pin balanced connector just plug in ?
For more flexibility, It’s Neutrik TRS/XLR combo jack, which has been using in pro audio for years.

Quick take on vs V3 monos? I just got them, but I think they need a nice pre-amp in front of my SMSL 100 pro dac. So got a Topping A90D instead of a pre90 to have an headphone amp and pre amp in this system. So interested in Topping now 😊vs V3M

@@mattmiller4978 What speakers do you use them on? If it's on a light load lower end speaker the upgrade might be minimal. More air, depth and generally fuller sounding is the likely experience. The better the speaker the more obvious differences will be. Why don't you try them at home to compare? Best way to go. Before you decide I recommend testing more products in your price range whatever that is. For me no topping amplification to this date fits what I want. The path to musical blizz usually needs some testing 😉. Currently there are so many interesting amplifier products in the under 2k$ it should be very possible to find something that would make you happy 😃. Good luck 🤞

If you like these amps you should try the Audiolab 8300MB, probably even better, sell for £700 in the UK, they can drive B&W 801 without any strain or struggle. Would love to see a proper review with 8300MB.

I know your speakers very well. If you can't take the highs, just get rid of them. It will be your cheapest and easiest way to go. You can spend a fortune on electronics and still get bad results.
If you really want to keep your 801's, I would give Cable Company a call. Any time they send out components and cables to demo, they keep detailed records on the customers opinions, and what they actually purchased, if anything. For example, if you need a pair of speaker cables, they have over 30 years of records and customer comments in their system, and can give a specific cable or brand recommendation based on what their customers were most happy with.

Why do Chinese amplifiers use mini-XLR connectors for the DC power feed? This type of connector has small pins with a cross-sectional area that is insufficient for the load current demand of the circuit. The B200 amplifier as a power specification of 200W into 4 Ohms. Assuming this is an RMS Wattage then the speaker load will draw around 7 Amps (RMS). Some of the peak current demand will be delivered by the electrolytic capacitors on the amplifier’s supply rails. However, this energy must be replenished by the external switch-mode power supply. Typically, a good quality mini-XLR connect is limited to less than 5 Amps. This mini-connector is just a bottleneck in the power delivery.
Very interesting as I thought the sound of the demo was very anaemic and they might have the power to get loud but they lack "balls" overall.

The sensitivity of the speaker determines the sound pressure level in the room for a given drive power. So, if the amplifier design restricts the current drive, it is best matched with a high sensitivity speaker. The selected speakers should have a relatively flat impedance curve with no nasty dips. The B200 is specified at 240 Watts in an 8 Ohm load. In this mode the maximum current demand decreases to 5.5 Amps (RMS). That’s why it is always important to match amplifiers and speakers. The -6dB cut-off point of the speaker will determine the level of bass energy you hear.
They are actually called GX connectors and are used in the aircraft industry.
Typically used is the GX16 3-pin which is a very good choice and able to deliver more than sufficient power.
@@fx-studio Thanks for identifying the connector as a GX16-3pin. I have looked at the specification sheets and the contacts are rated at 5 Amps maximum. So, it does not appear to be any better than a mini-XLR connector. The B200 need 7 Amps (rms) and the peak current is likely to be around x4 this level.
@@SteveD-m6z There are different pin configurations available on the GX16 series. So it could be swapped to say a 6 pin and then just double up on the power. Many different types of cable are available as well on Aliexpress. If you can use a soldering iron its an easy job.

Have had these for about 1 month now and the B200 has many good qualities in terms of sound but lacks some energy. Never get the feeling that I have the artists present when I turn up the volume (unlike my Marantz). These are more analytical. A shame as there are a lot of good things about them. I strongly doubt that these hold 200w in 8 ohms, it doesn't sound like that.

@@Tharbamar Hi, yes, I thought the same since it needs power when needed and when I'm up to the maximum volume limit, a lot drops out. Topping should test this out and come up with eg a 10amp power supply and perhaps some larger power capacitors would have helped. Have Swedish Rauna concrete floor-standing speakers in 8ohm and with a sensitivity of 91dB, so is reasonably easy to drive. Otherwise, thanks for your nice TH-cam channel

Topping says that the B200 output impedance is < 5 milliohms. Dampening factor = spk imp / amp output imped = 8 ohm / 5 mOhm ≥ 1600.

Don't spend on highend gear then limit the sound quality with compressed Spotify. Much better to use a lossless streaming source like Apple Music.
I wish reviewers would use more challenging music - like some EDM music with 70+ layers and very high recording standards, not these old songs run through x50 1970's NE5532 op amps in the studio.
@@fx-studio I'm in the opposite camp. EDM music hides bad recordings and gear. This is similar to how home theaters with 2+ speakers and playing diaglogue and explosions can hide behind mediocre gear.
Instead, I prefer my gear with a lossless streaming source, and I can hear a difference with vocalists and jazz and broadway musicals.
@@mrpmj00 Some recent very well recorded EDM is complex, has a wide bandwidth and is challenging to a sound system. In comparison Jazz and light vocals is easy and can make even a mediocre system seem good. That's why audiophiles like that type of recording.
Often those recordings have been made some time ago using studio equipment packed full of 1970's op amps like the NE5532 and TL074, so no way its going to sound great anyway.
Would love to see the power output with a multi-tone test, which is a way better approximation of music than a single frequency. Would be surprised if they put out much more than 5 watts before shutting down...

@@Tharbamar yes, but it's way closer to multi-tone than a 1khz sine wave. Music is dynamic multi-tone. Distortion traces from multi-tone can show significant audible distortion at single digit powers on 100 watt plus amps. It explains why some lower powered amps can play significantly louder than more (on paper) powerful ones. The Wiim amp suffers very badly with this, as do some of the Fossi amps. It also explains why amps that appear to have a flat response and lots of power sound flat, thin and harsh when driving speakers.

The sound demo sounded dry, thin and was fatiguing, they may be able to get 'loud' but to me ultimately they lacked "balls" imo.

Through my headphone rig, but it doesn't matter because compared to other demo's this sounds dry and lacks balls, I can even easily distinguish this with my soundcore q30 Bluetooth headphones

Sorry to hear that mate, it’s more to do with the paring component synergy and largely depends on personal preference but they do sound transparent not garbage, probably one of the Best Buy.
Ever since you have started using the DMP-8 as your source all of your demos sound bright, unrefined and unmusical. I know you can hear it too so it is puzzling as to why you continue to use it as your DAC.
