Actually, gar can live longer than that, its on average a 50 year life expectancy. Heck, the world's biggest alligator gar was estimated to be in its 90s before a fisherman killed it accidentally pulling it up in his net. Meaning the fish could've lived longer.

They don’t eat all the fish: the diet of alligator gar is composed mostly of stuff like big gizzard shad and bullheads, not bass or such. Also there are a lot less of them than there used to be.
Also, a 200+lb fish that puts up an impressive and often acrobatic fight on the line is definitely a worthy adversary for an angler.

When I was very young, I went fishing with my dad’s uncle (we just called him Uncle) in east Texas, and I can’t remember what we were fishing for, but I had hooked a gar on accident. I thought it looked really cool when I got it to shore, but Uncle told me that they were trash fish and acted like they were vermin. To this day I still find them to be the most fascinating fish, and still wish I could go back to that moment cause it’s actually the only time I’ve ever caught a gar; I mean it was tiny, but still
