I think the ending is perfect. Not to dismiss the end of a relationship at any age, she's 17 and to me the soft sad melancholy feel seems to suit the emotion more. This song is really a masterclass in doing the most with something that’s very minimalist! The bridge has a very Lorde vibe, and it sounds incredible!! I really wish the bridge had kept more of the subdivision alive through like a 16th note Moog line, or a few extra drum hits, or like a simple hi hat to help keep the momentum built in the prior chorus. This song is about her co-star Joshua Bassett. Rumored that they secretly dated while filming their show. He actually taught her how to drive for her to get her drivers license. The suspicion of their relationship ended started in early 2020. In summer 2020 Joshua was spotted with, singer/songwriter and actress, Sabrina Carpenter. Rumors say that Joshua dumped Olivia for Sabrina since Olivia was and still is underage. Olivia posted a snippet of the song on Instagram back in 2020 as she was still working on it. The original lyrics were “brunette girl” instead of “blonde girl” before she eventually changed it to fit the story. So that’s what the song is probably about.

This song is really a masterclass in doing the most with something that’s very minimalist! The bridge has a very Lorde vibe, and it sounds incredible!! I really wish the bridge had kept more of the subdivision alive through like a 16th note Moog line, or a few extra drum hits, or like a simple hi hat to help keep the momentum built in the prior chorus. It’s a small thing and it still sounds great, but I think that would set it off! 🙌🏽
