Many pianists desire heavy piano actions while others prefer lighter actions. The term "down-weight" refers to the weight it takes to depress a key and ignite the jack and is measured in grams. Watch this video to learn more.

My answer to your title "What makes a piano feel heavy" is:
The cast iron plate makes them heavy. 😅
I didnt know this was a video about touch weight on the keys.

I bought a grand piano many years ago and besides an unneven touch weight, the average down weight turned out to be 65-70 grams. Unfortunately I was influenced in my choice of piano by its glorious tone. This was a big mistake however. The action parts were stiff, lacking sufficient lubrication and the drop screws had been screwed down too much; don't ask me why. Anyhow, the piano had to go after being returned to the store (Manchester, England) in an unsuccessful attempt to fix it and replaced with another of the same make.

Michael, could you tell me how long the whole key (not just the visible part) of a grand piano is? (both white and black)

Hello, I would like to know how to change oxidized leads from the keys of a vertical kawai without damaging the key when removing the lead. Thanks and regards.

Will putting hammers closer to strings make subjective feeling that keys are sligthly easier? I am wondering if there is a shorter way to string, could pianist play fast passages with less power to produce sound? Sorry on bad english

Hey bro, Hope you are doing good. Today randomly I have checked your videos because I love this piano technician process. I am a piano player and I work for piano selling company as a product specialist. I am from India and stays in Mumbai city. Last few months I am thinking to learn about piano repair work, I did a carpentey and engineering work in past and that’s the reason why I may be able to do mastery in this work so now I am searching for good academy there I can join and learn whole process. I will also check your website. You are from which country? Thank you so much for making videos. 😊

Interesting! I am having a piano rebuilt with a Renner action. They will ask how I want the action to be...So, a “heavy action” is 55 grams? A “feather light “ would be 50 grams?

Good evening, I am buying a new Piano and I would like some suggestion: generally when I encounter, in my piano recitals, a Steinway, I found that its action is somehow “heavier” and “slower” than other brands like Fazioli or Bosendorfer. I found that also Boston pianos, (made by Kawai and designed by Steinway) are pretty similar in regulation to the Steinway. I want my new piano to be regulated in a way in which it doesn’t help me at all. My goal is to have my practice piano to let me do the hardest work possible in order to be prepared for any piano I will find in the next concert venue. Before move abroad I had my piano in Italy regulated like a Steinway, pretty heavy action, deep excursion of the keys, but at that time I didn’t know what my tuner did to made it practically identical to the “average” Steinway D model. Did he work on the counter weight? If you were my technician what would you do to satisfy my demands? Also is it ok to make this adjustment to a new piano or it “risky”? (could damage the mechanic?) Thanks a lot

Wanting a heavy practice piano is a bad approach to take imo. Remember that repetitive strain disorder and carpel tunnel syndrome are significant issues. Pianos should have a light action, especially if you're playing Chopin/Liszt etudes. Some Steinway's have light actions too. Every Steinway piano is different. There's no standard for them.

My vertical piano age 1954 as the C5 to F6 really heavy arround 80g. I check the pins the pivots and All ok smoth.. i Think I Will put leds on it. The problem is that when input the leads and remove the piano actions the keys Goes down.I'm using some temporary weigth fixed with tape.little better. Do you know more possível causes of this extreme weigth?

Why do the action forces change? I can see a gram or two as the wood absorbs moisture or dries out, but why such drastic changes. Mainstream quality piano companies must be weighing each note at the factory. Ok, maybe hammer voicing may change the weight, but then again its only a gram or two worst case.

i'am not shure that this is an academy if man put leads the way too close to eatch other, what makes its installation impossible

I wonder why this explanation forgets to mention that adding weight makes the whole mechanism slower according to Newton's law.
