      @@leemcdonald1901 I doubt it would work well for deep sky imaging. However, you can make use use of better eyepieces and a narrow band nebula filter. A good star atlas and a pair of 10x50mm binoculars will also be very helpful.

    • @gregorypecaut7164
      @gregorypecaut7164 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I assume your 127 is a Mak? Or is it a Newt? Quality eyepieces are a good starting point. It's very tempting to grab eyepieces better than what comes with the scope, but still not quality. Just remember, scope's will come and go, but great eyepieces last a lifetime. Televue, UO Orthos, Can be pricey, but they are worth it. And improve your views on everything from a sub $100 scope to scopes that cost thousands.
      The mount! Should cost about as much as your scope or more, except when talking Dobs. A Shakey mount can make observing horrible even with a high dollar fantastic scope. Move up a step at a time and you will have a collection of mounts and still will probably in the end, end up with something like an EQ6. So just save up and get the quality mount to begin with. In fact my favorite mount for my little 70mm is my EQ6R Pro. It's my favorite mount for every scope I have, except my Celestron 8"CPC. And if I didn't have the CPC, but instead had the Nexstar, I'm sure my 8" SCT would be on the RQ6 too.
      But the best investment for astronomy has to be an observatory! A roll off roof shed will add hours to your observing time. Make set up a snap, and shutting down a breeze. You will use your equipment more than twice as much. And not loose or forget something out side from picking up in the dark. Instead, when you call it a night, you just park the scope, and close the roof. And a cheap concrete pier is stronger, more vibration free, and much less costly than a good tripod.

    4:43 I was surprised that a lot of stars on my screen were not moving at all when you were zooming in. Then I started to appreciate how large our universe is. 2 seconds later, I found out that those "stars" are actually dust. Not stardust, just dust on my screen...

  • @roypatton1707
    @roypatton1707 3 ปีที่แล้ว +142

    The "best" telescope depends on what you want to do. Personally, I prefer Dobs because I can set it up and start viewing long before anyone else. They also allow you to learn the sky. Intelligent mounts are great, but they take away the fun of accidentally coming across a distant double star while hunting for a DSO.

    • @taraswertelecki9886
      @taraswertelecki9886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I usually opt for Dobs when visually observing, but I use digital setting circles because of milky skies and light pollution. I spend more time looking at things than hunting for them....which is very useful as few opportunities to observe deep sky objects come my way.

    In June 1992 I completed work on my 10" f/6 Dob with mirrors by the NASA optical wizard Paul McCoy. This served well until I got old and also was dealing with cancer for a couple of years (2010-13). The Dob is a world class scope, but really to heavy for me to drag out now except for really special occasions. So, in 2011 I downsized and got a Tele Vue NP101 which I'm sure is as good as any other 4" refractor in the world. This has been a lot of fun as a visual instrument: I don't feel the need to do astrophotography. In June 2020 I decided to spend my Trump Bucks on a Tele Vue 76 which is absolutely grab and go, unlike the NP101, which takes about 15 minutes to set up, versus three minutes for the TV 76. Since June 1992 I have logged 935 observing sessions and hope to reach 1000 before I croak.
    If you are young and strong, get the 10" like the young lady said. If you have $4000 (once you throw in the tripod and alt-az head) the Tele Vue Nagler-Petzval design cannot be beaten by anything. If you have $1800 and want a real grab and go, the TV 76 is fabulous. You can get a perfectly good three inch refractor for about a thousand dollars less, but if you do a lot of observing and develop the sensitivity to actually see the difference, I say, why not have the best?

    This was a very entertaining video. And it was also very informative. Anyone who has been around amateur astronomy for a while must agree with your findings. But the true blue axiom has always been aperture, aperture, aperture. The mirror size on the Hubble is 2.4 meters in diameter. That is not a lot of a photons catching size but when you consider the Hubble does not have an atmosphere to look through and it can sit perfectly still and watch a tiny spot in the cosmos for days at a time and it does, that 2.4 dia. meter mirror becomes be huge. So you get these wonderful pictures of not only the remains of exploded stars, but you can also get pictures of the oldest visual anomalies in our heavens. Your picks are spot on but you add a unique concept with the idea of small can also be great by showing photos taken from your little refractor scope. That was a great idea and shows not all is a loss if you can only afford a small refractor type scope. Good job.

    Hey! First I have to say, that the video is really cool and as many before me have already mentioned, the production value is phenomenal. It really elevates the content above what you would expect from a youtube channel.
    The only slight issue I have is with the sort of silly arguments made against newtonians. They have their downsides of course, and those should be pointed out. Big and Unwieldy? Sure. Collimation? Not really.
    "The slightest knock, knocks them out of collimation." It's a bit strange that a scope can sail on a ship all the way from China, and be perfectly usable for months or even years. Even if they get knocked out slightly...so what? You still get an overall focusing surface area that is bigger than refractor at the same price. And those are a real pain to collimate if you ever need to align them. When it comes to newtoninas, you're in luck since you can just buy a laser collimator.
    Laser collimators are not collimated? Almost never. Usually the problem due to the focuser changing alignment and looser tolerance on other components. If I'm wrong though. I'd love to be corrected.
    Anyway just wanted to put it out there. In no way thats a critique of the episode. In fact I loved it.

      @@arcolumnar9843 U definetly need a 2x Barlow If you wanna take a look at Jupiter ,Saturn and Mars (small note Mars dazzles a lot so kinda hard on getting a good view without a decent filter), other then that Its up to you. I bought a kit, It had a barlow, a 6mm and a 15mm lense (6mm seeems a lil bit to much with the 2x Barlow together quality went a lil bit down and last but not least 3 filters red blue and moonfilter but the blue and red filter didnt do to much for me. If you are planning on watching the moon to I would recommend a Moonfilter doesnt have to be any special a cheap one does the trick.

    I’ve just discovered this great channel, it’s brilliant. Agree about astrophotography, it’s a nightmare. Fiddling about at 2:00am trying to photograph Saturn and Jupiter, only to be rewarded with some out of focus blobs is not very rewarding. Will keep persevering though and hopefully get something decent in the end.
    Keep up the good work.

    Awesome to see a new vid. I was gonna pick up my first telescope over Christmas but a mate at work was giving away his old Celestron Astromaster 70 so I jumped on it and have had a ball looking at the moon, Jupiter and Saturn. I was going to buy the 8" Dob so I think this video further underscores that 6', 8' 10' Dobs are the way to go for dipping your toes into visual astronomy. Loving the new feral look too haha !

    Fantastic review. I’m in the market for my first telescope @ 50yrs old (late starter)
    Have been pondering the 8-10 inch dobsonians. Unsure on a flextube (collapses and won’t be used as a towel drier) or a standard tube scope. I think either would be fine for me. What would you recommend?
    Visual only for me. Once I get the idea of how to use, point, location of things in the sky, then I will certainly look at an Astro photo set up.

    This is a wonderful video - so inspiring for someone starting out. I love the picture of the globular cluster at 4.40. Can you say a bit more about what you mean by 'turn up the exposure and try to mimic somewhere dark'? Does this need a fairly long exposure with filters and driven mount, or is it simpler than that?

    • @Astronurd
      @Astronurd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was no filters used and he means that by increasing the length of the exposure it’s the same as a short exposure in a dark sky area as the contrast is so much better in the dark sky

    • @liamros3562
      @liamros3562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I have no Idea what type of camera Rory used, it would have been nice to know.
      A DSLR ? a dedicated CCD camera ? (ZWO, QHY etc..)
      But what I know is that if you shoot in RAW format (as opposed to JPEG) you can change the exposure in post, using Lightroom for example (or another similar software)
      It's just one slider to push.
      I think that's what he meant because the way the scope was mounted in this video wouldn't allow long shutter time,.
      You would need a tracking system (with a motor) to compensate the earth rotation for long shutter time.
      Therefore I think what he meant was to turn the exposure up in post processing.
      Unless he's being using another mount from the one seen in the video, but I don't think so.
