The Honda Transalp is too ¥¥EXPENSIVE¥¥ (pt.4)

  • Honda made the XL 750 Transalp and advertised it as a road bike, despite having long travel suspension, 21in tubed spoke front and 19 inch tubed spoked rear wheels. No tubeless option and not even a 19in front wheel option like on the Suzuki vstrom 800 re. Despite this seemingly off-road design, I decided to take Honda at their word and put this midsized Africa Twin to the test as a road bike.
This is the first installment of my 24 Hours with the 2024 Transalp 750 in which I treat it like a road bike and only a road bike. I want to fine out, “if you never took this bike off road, is it still a good bike”. And I don’t mean to play nice. I rented this bike with my own money so I own no curtesies to anyone. I have no car, only have the means for 1 motorcycle, and it’s my main form of transit.
We commuted in Tokyo city and did high speed highway touring, and then we got rid of our chicken strips in the mountain.
This time I prove that the Transalp might be the most expensive middle weight. It’s not a bargain of cost performance if you have to still buy suspension, tubeless wheels, cruise control, and maybe even reprogramming the computer aids. Not to mention this can all void your warranty.
And finally, I’ll need to decide, would I actually buy this as my one and only pavement prowler for everything I can imagine?

I think it all depends on what you want. In eastern Europe the transalp its 11.550 euros, more expensive that the 800de, 790, and similar to tuareg, but i still choosed the Transalp, because, its the best do'it'all bike from all the other option that i tested, for me, i daily it so its a big plus that its narrower and feels so light, the turning circle is great, the engine it's pretty fun, and the seat is comfortable and spacious enough for me and my gf, it takes regular fuel and except for the t7, it have the longest service intervals, the engine is unicam, so the things should be simple and cheaper up there, and the cylinders are coated with nikasil, so it should be pretty reliable and got a 4 year or 200k km warranty, with 2 years of international road assistance included. Of course i would like to have more for my money, at least tubeless wheels (or at least ambient air temp, i mean wtf honda), but the transalp have a big aftermarket support already, and i preferred to buy a presumably reliable platform and to build around it, in time. The most important thing is to be honest with yourself and to know what do you want, to do your research and to choose what fit you the most both personally and financially. I saw a lot of ktm 790, africa twins or 800de's for sale with pretty low mileage, sold for maintenance costs or for weight/rider ability reasons.

I I was going to customize 1, I think the transalp have the best fundamental base. I have a ktm (Husqvarna) test ride coming out Wednesday. And the one thing I come back to over and over, all the little things are better with the honda. And it's with be effortlessly cheap to own.
If you buy this bike for 2 years and it's just a hobby, I'd go ktm. If you buy it as your main transportation and a hobby that you wanna keep 10+years, I'm leaning towards the honda.

@@kairyurider I agree, KTM, Aprilia, Ducati, they make such fun machines, but so unreliable long therm, but you can't have it all. Probably if I didn't work hard for my money, I would've bought a multistrada for touring and a 890, a tuareg or even a DesertX for gravel roads, because I still wouldn't buy a 150+ kg bike for proper, hardcore, off road stuff, but I'm poor so I got to keep my cr250 for hardcore stuffs and the transalp for anything else. At the end of the day, the best bike in the world is that one that you have in garage, because it's yours, and everybody should buy what make them smile and doesn't bankrupt them.

@@Specteryo right. I get 1 bike, I don’t think hard core will describe my off road. So, since I still like the street, this 7-800 adv segment will take my money😅

I checked out the KTM the other day. It is now only ¥1,390,000 stock. They also had a 10% off sale recently (that Honda never does here) and are giving a discount if you bundle the whole “Tech Pack”. So actually much cheaper than Honda after all the mods.

The Transalp is heaps cheaper in Australia than the competition. The V-strom is 3k more, A KTM 790 is 10K more and the Toureg also about 10K more. I think Weblike Japan has the quick shifter, bash plate etc pretty cheap. The suspension, I guess the 3k diff would get you most of the way already.

I found YSS (which is designed by a former öhlins employee) has some great suspension for the transalp. An Australian distributor (kmotorsport.com) can get it for me in japan at just under $3k aud. So I'm sure cheaper for you.
I'll probably go for the honda reliability and the better fit and finish to then biuld it up my own.

I can add aftermarket barkbusters, heated grips, bashplate, shock revalve and respring, cruise (by the way, the Veridian comes with the integrated switch just like the McCruise) and still be thousands under the cost of an unreliable KTM/Aprilia. Plus it's half the price to maintain.

In Japan the price ends up close if I do the cheapest options for the Honda

Since I ride in different seasons now considering to take Transalp or Tracer 9 as my everything bike. 07 does it all but I want more weather protection for cold days and more comfort on bad roads and on long trips.
Will have to really think through and test ride again to check and compare.

in europe ,transalp is prety close in price with vstrom,tenere,790,tuareg.unfortunatelly,yes its a little expensive.i think honda targeted to older riders who had or knew well the transalp 650.

Yes, and they are relying on their reputation rather than taking a risk of making something amazing.
And it's no risk, nobody would be mad at quality parts or option

What you mean by disposal? Can you not sell the original suspension on ebay in Japan? I know here in Europe you could sell it. There are always crashed bikes looking for cheap used parts.

Yes I can, but the front forks for example, I’d be only doing internals. Not sure who would buy internals of a stock, not that good, front fork. If it was the whole fork, maybe.
But yes, I resold my stock rear shock on my mt07

Its nice in japan you get so many choice. Here we only got transalp n versys 😢
If only tracer 7 or 9 came here i would try them as i more like yamaha model, but i think transalp have better riding position

we don't get versys 650 or tracer 7 in japan.
We don't get lots of bikes, even Japanese bikes, here in japan

In nz its even worse. The v strom is $18500 new. The transalp is $19500. Just plain dumb. I rode one the other day and love it more then the v strom but i cant justify that sort of money. Honda NZ suck!! Mind u ive seen lots of second hand v strom already for as little as $15k. Maybe that says something...

There are already used transalps full of extras.
I'm tempted by the ktm. At the end of the 2 year warranty if the ktm was headache, a 3 year old transalp with expired warranty would be great

@@kairyurider i agree! Thats what im thinking i will do. Im actually keen to try a tracer 900 as well. Might do that and then get a used kitted out transalp in a couple of years. Im upgrading from a cbr500r and its a tough to justify the big $$ because the cbr is so dam reliable! Just a bit boring!

@rwdrallying I had a tracer, if you wanna look at my playlist for it.
If I was sure I'd ride 100% pavement, tracer and maybe ktm 890smt were the first and last stop on my list
