Great video, excellent production values and super good Finn sailing technique instruction. This really does a super job of capturing the essence of Finn sailing. I sailed Finns from 1979 to 1989 and did a lot of video production in college, San Francisco State. For my money, you nailed this one, mate!! Thanks.
Just when you thought it might be a good idea to have a dabble in a Finn this comes along and says you haven't got the skills, the strength, or the commitment. Well done Ben for putting this together. Well done Oli for psyching out half the opposition before you get to the race course. We wish you both well from SailDog.
Ben, you nailed it. Awesome clip showcasing our sport and Ollie's approach in spades. Love your work!!! Al and I are ready to do one on the Tasar any time you're free ;)
Excellent job Ben, great production and content. Very impressive, this deserves to get very wide circulation. You have done credit to everyone involved.
This is an exceptionally good film about sailing a one design class at a high level. You have captured so much of the sailing experience that appeals to me (even if I'm a hack) - the sublime aesthetic as well as the adrenaline, the effort and the alone-ness. Looking forward to the next films. This should be one in a series. Of many.
I seem to remember a much younger man called Scott Watson sailing around Port Philip Bay in the early-mid 1980s... I always love seeing the minnows & smaller craft whenever I find myself near a yacht club... seems a long time since McRae Yacht Club, though! ~M x
Love this video! I m at 6'1 and weigh 200 Lbs. I sail a Laser Standard. Unfortunately my club doesn't own a Finn. In light wind, I m a sitting duck on the water. Btw, very inspiring video!
This is an awesome video! Have been showing this to all people who think sailing is an 'easy' sport. I love how this hasn't even touched on tactics as well! A perfect video start to finish - just wish I could do the same with my Hero 3 ha!
Very cool video, you are one of my favourite sailing TH-cam channel and I inspire to be like you. Just wondering what cameras you use and if you use any stabilizers and what would they be. P.s you should do some behind the scene videos
dude100000000001 The current set of ISAF rules allow one pump per wave (just to get onto the wave and start surfing). Article at www.asiaatsea.com/racing-rules-of-sailing-2013-2016-pumping/ discusses it. According to that article, and the video with Ben Ainslie embedded in the page, the Finn class alone now allows unlimited pumping downwind (something they introduced for the 2012 olympics) ... so there you go ... I learned something too :)
Daniel Scott Only when the appropriate flag is raised, for example they aren't allowed to freepump in light winds, it's usually when the breeze is 8+ knots that the flag goes up.
sailingshack Ahh yes, I should have mentioned that (Ainslie says that in the video too: only in moderate to heavy breeze). Thanks for the extra info (I've learned a few things today!) :)
That you have to train untill you are build like a gorilla and continuously have to jump around in the boat, especially downwind, to be in the first half of the fleet is exactly the reason I sold my Finn a few years ago.
Hi Ben, That is such an inspiring video (Like all Sailing Shack Vids), I am only 12 years old and want to go all the way in sailing, I am a dedicated young female RQYS Optimist sailor and to see this video only makes me want to keep pushing myself. sailingshack Thats a crazy expensive camera :O
Scott Hansen Rented it for a day Scott! Want one so bad
I sorry, did you say something about sailboat racing being lame?
That's what I thought.
Hey there! Just wondering what camera you used to shoot this? Great work!
Go Pro Hero 3+ black edition for some bits but mainly on a Sony FS700.
Great Video! But I cant find the song "one shot",could you give me a link?

Удивительно ещё ФИН не умер!!!
it's a finn, so you can pump it,,if ur large you gotta more to pump, pump on dinners, pump bigger you big folk and you might take it
too bad this was just a one off, I could watch a lot more of this!
with feedback like that we might just have to produce another... ;)
Finn... its a keel with a sail
isn't pumping against the rules?
dude100000000001 The current set of ISAF rules allow one pump per wave (just to get onto the wave and start surfing). dude100000000001 unlimited pumping for moth Europe and Finn with the O flag but pumping up wind is still forbidden.
How can I get that accent???...haha
laser is a toy for babies compared to a Finn

When people say sailing isn't a sport:
mmmmm.... someone needs to tell this guy that working the tiller so much actually reduces his speed going up wind....
+Danny Michaeli Nah, you have to steer through the waves pretty aggressively in a Finn . I wish I was as slow as he is upwind.
Saying this to one of the best finn sailors???
