Trust me, the first three seasons were great, seasons 4-6 were for the most part god awful, and the rest slowly improved till today, when the last couple of seasons are mostly really good

I think the scariest SpongeBob episode is the one where he’s trying to catch the bus. It’s so eerie and it feels like he’s lost and trapped.
Ah, yes; Rock Bottom. That is a very scary one. Another one would be Shanghaied (the Flying Dutchman makes SpongeBob and Patrick his slaves).
@@matthewmuir8884 I agree, that was also a scary episode but it relied on visuals and sound. Rock bottom was quiet and dark it has such a mood to it. Especially, when we watch Spongebob get more and more desperate and terrified. I believe he could also not speak or read the language, so it felt otherworldly. Hahaha think I am looking to deeply now

I think Rock Bottom disturbed me a lot more than The Health Inspector as a kid.
Mainly just due to the sense of loneliness and helplessness of that episode. It just felt like the world was out to get him and there was nothing he could do about it.
That idea really bothered me, especially as a little kid.
“The dark deed you requested is done, sir.” Lol, I felt so bad for Spongebob in this episode, but it was hilarious at the same time.
This is a prime example of how you can do dark humour without being edgy. Adult animated shows often get these two mixed up. I'm impressed how they managed to do great dark comedy that's accessible to a young audience.
Even if you think the health inspector may have died by hitting his head on the table or choking on the fly the moan afterwards clarifies that he's still alive.
What makes the episode so morbid is how disturbingly casual Mr. Krabs is about hiding a body; keep in mind that he's canonically a war veteran.
This Spongebob Squarepants episode was pure black comedy, to say the least.
Yeah and I still wonder why the Krusty Krab has up and shut down by this or any other incident that came after.

I think I know why mr krabs is so calm about the "dead" body situation: He has been through that already, in an early episode it is said that Mr Krabs was a War Veteran, so he's seen his fair share of icthyoside.
Doesn't he also warn Spongebob about what happens with "The Hooks"?
Mr crabs has seen some shit in his life. In the krabs and plankton origin episode they accidentally kill some old guy they knew with the original krabby patty recipe as teenagers. He was also a sailor, apart of the navy, and a pirate.
Wasn't he a pirate in his younger years....

Oh yeah, that’s all over the show. He gets any chance to talk about his days in the Navy, and he will go for it. Remember that episode where he kills an army of skeletons with a swordfish nose? That one was great, and it pretty much confirms that he was a skilled fighter and most likely did his fair share of killing. And if he didn’t kill in the Navy, he did say he was a pirate before that, and that he did plenty of raiding.
Honestly, I always thought “Graveyard Shift” was the scarier episode.
Rock Bottom is a split second for me. Especially with the dark environment and how Spongebob has to find a way out while Patrick managed to successfully get on a bus back to Bikini Bottom

Hard to say.... That's more "comedic" than it is dark honestly since it really doesn't seem like it tries to go dark. It is just Squidward trying to scare Spongebob while getting annoyed. Kind of like any other episode of Spongebob set at the Krusty Krab. That and the aforementioned "Nasty Patty banned for being Too scary" while the other one was... ok. A nice little cartoon for the kiddos, but overall nothing that went as too off the deep end.
But if it pops up later, I wouldn't be against it. More kids should know who Nosferatu is.

I like the fact you know he’s alive, it’s a clever way to maintain the episode’s dark humour while also making it more kid friendly. The exploration of the characters still happens but there’s an added layer of comedic irony
When I was a kid, I wanted to show my mom Sponge-bob so she would understand why I like it so much. This was the episode that happened to air, and it took forever to convince her to give it a second chance after that

What I always liked was that the Health Inspector never even took a bite of the patty, that was the fly that did him in.
I like the horror cliches put in this episode, like having it take place on a dark & stormy night, and the single flickering letter, on the neon sign
Also in the color wheel, green's the opposite of red. So that color might symbolize this has an opposite feeling than a traditional SpongeBob episode.

One of the funniest episodes. When they show the actual “fake inspector” I always laugh my ass off

Okay, Spongebob episode, now me suggesting “One Course meal”, and “Are you happy yet?” makes more sense, I genuinely think you should cover an episode on Dark Toons where things get dark for the wrong reasons.
Are you happy now wasn't really dark it was just funny. One Corse Meal was just poorly written. They should have taken out the suicide joke, punched up the gags, and maybe had Spongebob help plankton then double-cross him.
There is also Planet of the Jellyfish, Graveyard Shift, and Curse of Bikini Bottom.

Spongebob is so kind and him accepting responsibility for his complacency is comendable. He really could have said no during the act and lost his job and recognized his part to play in the matter which makes him a great character.
Sadly if this were MODERN SpongeBob, he would've been completely clueless and thought it was all just a game.
You know Fun Fact: the island that's seen in the beginning and basically any shot like that was actually shot in Show composer Steve Belfest's pool.

Their budget was so tiny that they made a silent episode in the first season just because the sound recorder broke, so it wouldn't surprise me.
They did a lot of clever and creative things with such a small budget that it makes the show even more impressive looking back.
Spongebob is one of those shows where only about 50% of the episodes are good, yet it’s still a classic.
Classic because close to 100% of the Season 1-3 episodes are still very good. They hold up amazingly well
The pre-movie episodes were 90% good.
Not to mention that SpongeBob has been the #1 show on Nickelodeon ever since it 1st premiered back in 1999.
Generally when you’re talking about “The classics” its usually seasons 1-2, 3 is also really good. If you’re talking about “Good” spongebob, then it’s usually season 4-5 and maybe 6, anything after that is garbage.
To be fair, spongebob has been around a while. Thats still a LOT of episodes XD
Again, “Shanghaied” with its three alternate endings-ALL of them unsettling-is a good candidate.

The "Mood Whiplash" begins when we see those black silhouettes of the Mice. From that moment onward it turns into a home invasion survival movie with each scene more intense than the last.

This is a classic episode brimmed with dark humor that's even funnier when you grow up.
Spongebob has many other dark episodes like "Are You Happy Now?", "The Bully", "Graveyard Shift", etc.
The amount this supposed kid's cartoon has is outstanding.

Yes, I want "Little Rock of Horrors" to be reviewed. Thought it was disturbing when I first saw it, but the "Brains" song by Voltaire easily made it become one of my favorite episodes. That and it is rather morbidly hilarious.
I think it was the only creepy cartoon ever made with a catchy, bitchin' soundtrack.
Do a Dark Toons on "Runaway Brain", the dark Mickey Mouse short from the 90s that was kept in the vault for a decade due to how dark it was.
Mickey gets experimented on by a Frankenstein kind of mad scientist, and gets his brain swapped with a giant Pete monster.

When I first saw this episode as a kid, I thought it was more funny than dark (maybe due in part to the dramatic irony in knowing the health inspector was still alive, and watching Spongebob and Mr. Krabs freak out so much), but the most notable episode that DID scare me was the one where Spongebob was slowly turning into a snail. I'm sure y'all know the one.

I just saw that as a silly ghost story episode when I watched it. Also that nerdy guy at the end was adorable, and I wish they'd used him more. XD
Spongebob is the type of show that has a penchant for making EVERY character the butt monkey at at least some point, even if they don’t deserve it.

You should cover Krabby Patty Creature Feature. I consider that to be the most terrifying and dark episode of SpongeBob. PhantomStrider also thinks so.
Any SpongeBob content made after 2005 is not Canon, and should be treated like it doesn't exist.

Definitely a favorite episode of mine. Watching it as a kid it never frightened or disturbed. I think that may be because they showed us that the health inspector wasn't really dead. It was a clever way to keep the episode light enough so kids wouldn't be frightened.
This and The Hash Slinging Slasher episode are my two favorite SpongeBob episodes. I just love the gloomy atmosphere of both.
For dark toons I wanna suggest: a fairly odd parents episode where timmy wish for complete darkness and Cosmo and wanda turn into demon looking fairies trying to eat timmy .

There was an old D.A.R.E. cartoon we once had to watch in school called "The Land of Decisions and Choices" where for some reason the drug pusher was dressed as a bunny rabbit and his child lackey was dressed as a bumblebee, I think to look more kid friendly. I'm honestly not making this thing up.
D.AR.E. taught me that If you try weed just one time you WILL get addicted immediately and absolutely lead you to trying Heroine and Meth which is almost the exact same thing, and your life will be ruined forever and ever and you will go to jail! Your grandmother will break her legs and your mother will grieve over your little sister's zombified corpse and it'll all be because you tried weed. So stick to only good old doctor prescribed drugs. always safer.

In all fairness it dosen't take alot to graduate these days hell the education system is a joke these days
There are a lot of disturbing spongebob episodes, but most of them still can't pass for "dark". Like i would call "The Splinter" disturbing just because of the jacked up imagery, but i wouldn't call it dark because of the ending and how it is such a small thing. I would also call episodes like "Squid baby" disturbing because it most definitely is, but i still don't know if that counts as dark. I guess i would call "rock bottom" a dark episode, just because so much of it centers around darkness. Being afraid of the dark and how sometimes your imagination makes things worse than they actually are. Other than that i'd really only be able to point to certain dark scenes in episodes and not whole episodes themselves.

clericofchaos1 SpongeBob always had a way of hiding some really disturbing ideas behind really clever writing and good timing with its jokes. An episode where you can really see how dark SpongeBob gets is "I was a Teenage Gary". It's probably one of the most disturbing and dark episodes in the show for me because it takes away Spongebob's dialogue, taking away the humor element with it, and even ending on SpongeBob and Squidward resigning themselves to their fates. It's basically "Tusk", but with snails and less filler, and it's genuinely pretty fucked up.
"the dark deed you requested is done" is a line that I still remember so clearly even though I have not seen this episode in many years. I would not say that it scared me, more that it was a fun change of pace. Rock Bottom freaked me out more.

If you wanna see a show that REALLY violates ocean science, go watch Bubble Guppies. Every time my kids watched that, I'd spot at least half a dozen different things that made no damn sense in an underwater setting.
There was an episode of Rugrats that I recall scaring the piss out of me. The Monster Under the Bed episode. Had a kid getting pulled under the bed and everything...

My recommendation for an episode of dark toons would be the episode "who killed who?" From the grim adventures of Billy and Mandy. The series is dark on its own, but this one just feels... different in terms of its tone and atmosphere and because of that, it's one of my favorite episodes. The ending is one that has stuck in my mind for years and definitely deserves a watch.

there's plenty from Rocko's Modern Life that could qualify. The ones that come to mind are "To Heck and Back" and "Uniform Behavior"
You should review adventure times, “no one can hear you.” For dark toons. That episode was creepy. Or Betty boop, Minnie the moocher
