    We carry a 1m length of 6mm threaded rod to clean out what we call the flute tube in the head. We also did an acid flush last winter though since you have had the head off, that won't be needed for a few years. There is one other mod you might consider. The water intakes on the sail drive leg can block up and are difficult to clean out. By closing these off and fitting a conventional seacock along side the sail drive seal you eliminate this problem. However, that's a boat out job for the future.
    They are good engines so worth persevering.

      Thanks Pete, sorry only just seen your comment, good idea about the rod, a few people have mentioned about disconnecting the water intake from the sail drive and putting a in a sea cock. Its all ok at the moment, but maybe something to consider for the future. Happy New Year to you.

    Great video, guys! Really good explanations about the engine James - fascinating to have it explained how it works! Thanks for taking the time to keep us all up to date!

      Thanks Stevie G, glad you enjoyed it and we are so glad the engine is now sorted, it was a right nightmare! We thought about you as we sailed passed Redcar, we looked out for you on the beach but couldn’t see you. Hope you and Julie are both doing ok, we are in Seaham now and loving it here. Next stop will be Sunderland, then Newcastle!! X

      @Gavin & James Sailing we're both good thanks! Sounds like the engine work was worth it and she's running really smoothly now! Safe journey to Sunderland and Newcastle! x

      Glad it was helpful! We are hauling out in May and will be changing our sail drive diaphragm and rudder bearings.

    Hey guys congrats for moving on from beautiful Whitby. You certainly now know the ins and outs of that engine. We look forward to the record of the passage to Hartlepool.

    As a fellow 28i owner, same vintage, same engine, this was really interesting,. Looking forward to a boat tour - do you have solar panels fitted?

      Hi David, glad you enjoyed the video. We are planning on doing a boat tour video, so keep a look out. As for Solar we have got a portable 120w that we can plug straight into our 12 volt sockets rather than have to attach to the battery, we also have a victron smart charger for when we are in marinas.

    Your engine does not have heat exchanger? Sea water circulates instead of coolant?

    • @GavinAndJames_LifeAfloat
      @GavinAndJames_LifeAfloat  ปีที่แล้ว

      No it does not have a heat exchanger. Sea water circulates around the pipes and head to cool it. I think our VP 2002 is the last model to be just water cooled, from 2003 onwards they had a coolant system.
