Excellent Boone. However, I must comment about there being no right or wrong way to carve hills. My experience has taught me that cutting in a manner that leads to a trip to the emergency room is definitely the wrong way. 😂 BTW, full-on diggin’ the rumble strips. 😎🤙

Nice video! This was my favorite video in your series so far. A few questions for you: (1) What glue did you use to attach the styrene board to the styrene hill pieces? (2) Was the watered down acrylic paint or did you water-down a latex paint for your initial coat of brown? (3) Have you ever used a foam cutter while working with the styrene board? (4) if not a foam cutter, what type of blade did you use for your long cuts when you did your first cut on the original styrene sheet (before you used your knife for shaping)? (5) After the wood glue dries on the static grass, do you need to use a final spray (like Testor's Dull Coat) to keep everything in place or is that an unnecessary step? Thanks!
Thank you for your input, 1st the glue I used to attach the foam to the board is PVA, but you can also use hot glue if you want to speed up the process. I also use that to attach the different pieces of foam together. 2nd the ground color is watered down acrylic paint. 3rd I don’t use a foam cutter , would like one but just haven’t gone out and purchased. It would make things easier. Lol... 4th I use a retractable razor knife to cut the foam. 5th I have found that the grass stays in place very well with the wood glue, but any added insurance of sealing down the grass would be a plus. Kinda new at the video thing, I thank you for your comment , and i will definitely make sure to explain more in-depth in my future videos. Glad that you enjoyed it and thank you again.... Boone
Hey Boone just stumbled over your channel. Looks really nice. I love the casual way you go for it. Beautiful results! Any gallery of your track somewhere? You use scx/scalextric track? I was going to do a short video of my layout up to this point since I have had a few inquiries about it... so that’s in the works. I use Scalextric track and it’s about 106ft . Thanks Derek, the edging is 1/4 in MDF , it’s covered in a later video on the sight. Spray foam scenery and rocks.... I cover the edging and other things as well. Welcome to the world of slot cars and thank you for watching...

Ok, all kidding aside, mixing up the colors really does give it a more superb natural appearance. I love it. However, I got a big question.... Does the grass later work its way up into the interiors of the slot cars? I ask because I'm planning on doing scenery for my slot track but my scale is H.O.
Thanks David... the static grass stays put very well. I don’t have a issue with it coming loose, but that said , I do a good vacuum when it is completely dried. This way if there is some that is loose it gets vacuumed up.... but as far as looks go , you just can’t ask for more.

Hello Boones, I follow your videos and your explanations, I would like to be able to put your knowledge into practice soon. the videos are especially spectacular. I would like to know the type of filler you use to put on top of the Foam. 😊
Thank you very much, the filler I use is Drywall Joint Compound. It is very inexpensive and works great 👍. There are modeling fillers on the market. But this works just as well and you get quite a bit for your money.
Quick question on maintaining a shiny slot car. I have kids here that race and I think just from touching the cars they tend to dull out. What can I use to clean and polish but not degrade factory paint/decals.... Thanks for your time in advance. We love the videos!
Thank you Daryl , a good polish to use is a aerosol spray wax. There are quite a few on the market today. The aerosol wax will mist onto the surface and it just needs a light buff with a microfiber cloth and it shines right up.

I'm no expert. But there not right gauge wise .if that emwere areal track the rum ble strip e be 5 foot ..I think U need to look at Ur cars wheels to the blue an white strip? I'd go half that bug..The blue an white an how u paint is right on..they always look hand painted at most real tracks Cept in Europe now.They do a perfect line ..Thx for ur time..

Boone, quick question: what’s your opinion of screwing your track down onto the board to lock it down? Was thinking just the tracks that tend to get the most play, curves, etc. Also, thank you for taking time to answer everyone’s questions!
Thanks 😊, fastening a track with screws is a good way of securing it. Depending on the track you have, some actually have a track securing system available. But if you do decide to take the screws to it, 😂… here are a couple things to consider. Different manufacturers of track use different materials to make the track surface. I’ll point out the major Two… Carrera track is a much harder material than Scalextric. So take caution when tightening the track down as to try not to distort the racing surface, Scalextric will distort easily. Try to countersink your holes so the screw head is flush with the surface. Also try to place the screws to the outside edge of the track as to not interfere with the racing surface. If you are thinking of fastening down a corner, try to place your screw on the inside edge of the track. But yes 👍 , screwing down a track is a necessary evil sometimes 😂.

What is joint compound? Is it for plastering or for tiling or something else? I live in Latvia and they dont understand what i need unless I tell them what its originally for 🤷 Amazing track ans scenery Thank you for posting 👍...Harry
Thank you Harry, the joint compound is originally designed for interior drywall. It’s the compound that is spread over the gaps between the drywall sheets to fill in the gaps . It’s then sanded down to make a smooth surface so the wall can then be textured and painted afterwards. Wish I could link a picture for you but TH-cam doesn’t allow that in chat / comments….

I want to build a cityscape track next year. I'm thinking of using 1/43 Carrera Go track to get the most track onto a 4 x 12 layout and to re-use the low cost Lionel O-gauge model buildings, people etc. available at swap meets and on ebay. Are there enough cars to choose from in the 1/43 scale? I want mostly 1960s - 70s era cars.

@Boone, i have a question, im currently building my track, atm the wood table. after that im going to start with the scenery. how do you fix the landscape on the table? do you even fix? my table is quite huge, 4.55 / 2.6 meter. how would you recomend myself to build the landscape? i cant go around the table but i builded the table so he can hold myself. so i was thinking starting in one of the far corners and work to the other far corner. im planing to paint the tracks as well. would you recommend myself doing that at the very begining, befor doing landscaping?

Nice size layout you have planned… if you plan on making a permanent layout I recommend glueing the polystyrene board to your table top. Either with PVA or a good wood glue, you can use hot glue in those areas that have those special needs , but realize it will melt the polystyrene some…This will help in a few ways. One of which is that your scenery will be firmly anchored and will not move. Movement can be a very bad thing , tends to destroy the hours of work you put into building up everything. If you have an area that you want to have access to , you can make removable scenery panels. These are pretty cool , but use them with some engineering in mind . They are best used in an island area. Meaning an area that the panel can be removed without disturbing any other scenery. … fixing the track to your board had its pluses and minuses. The plus is that the track is secure and will not move , at least on the table. Plastic track will expand and contract due to heat and cold… if you have your layout in a non heated area this might not be a great idea. The down side of securing the track is it makes it that much more work to service the track . Stuff happens… sometimes you need to remove an area of track for repairs or replacement… digital comes to mind on this one.. 😂… sometimes they can act up and need some cleaning. I have seen guys tie the scenery into the track , meaning blend the edge of the track into the landscape so it looks really realistic. This is very cool effect, but keep in mind the downside as well. My track is not secured to my table , I use my scenery and corner edge aprons to lock it into place to minimize the movement. It works very well , and I can remove the track if needed…. Believe I have a video that I show this and explain.. but sometimes I have to go through the track to tighten up the connections… and last but not least your attack plan…. 😂… you can start at one side and move across the layout building as you go , this will work. I prefer to try to start inside and work my way out… but like painting a room , don’t paint yourself into a corner. You can do the same with your scenery.. best thing is to look at this ad a possibility and plan accordingly. Meaning… give yourself an option, if you build and then down the road you want to change something or add , try to give yourself a route that you can get back into that area . Weather it be a removable piece of your scenery or track that can be removable so you can access those hard to reach areas . I have such an area as well. I can remove my track and it gives me a way of getting into the area , but it’s a bit of a tricky situation… hope this helps… big topic… let me know if you need any more help… thanks for watching my videos and have fun with your new project ….

Mr. Boones, you only use acrylic paint or you can also use vinyl ??
For scenery I just use acrylic. There are other paints that can be used. But I have never needed anything more than just good old acrylic paints 😂. Now for figures or car bodies, ect… there are others paints that I will use. But the cool thing about acrylic is it’s not going to break your checkbook, and when it cures it’s pretty durable.

Very cool…. A good base for 1/32 scale is honestly the bigger the better. But if you are limited on space I would at least start with 4ft x 8ft , anything smaller than this is a bit too small. And you are going to find that there are two major brands of track on the market. Yes there are a few others but these two are the major players. Carrera and Scalextric , Carrera can run 1/32 and 1/24 but it comes with a bigger footprint since the track is larger do to the fact it can handle the large 1/24 scale cars. Scalextric is 1/32 scale track and happens to be the same brand I use for track. Many options on who had the better track
Sorry,,,, I wasn’t done yet…. Hit the send button when I was attempting to correct the end of that….lol… to make a long story short . It really comes down to your preference. Both brands have pluses and minuses. But if I was in your shoes and was limited on space I would go for Scalextric. It’s readily available and the company has been around since the beginning of this hobby…. Hope this helps
I dont know if I missed a comment t or not, but how long do you have with the glue after laying it down to apply the grass with the wood glue?
You have some time… as long as the glue doesn’t glaze over your okay. But I tend to do smaller areas and not the complete large area at once. It just helps me to keep my mess to a minimum. And I can concentrate on my application better..

I’m not sure… my only hesitation on doing this is the durability over time. By making the joint compound thick it might be brittle and crack or worse yet break loose…
The joint compound works great for covering the foam and polystyrene for scenery, and since it is covered with paint , grass ect..but if it was in an area next to the racing surface, I’m just not sure how much abuse it will be able to take

I would not commit to building all your rumble strips this way at first , just a section and see how it works out. One thing about slot cars is that many ideas with scenery are still in development stages … only way to find out if it works is to try it out…

Boone how do you draw the exact piece of styrofoam you have to cut? you draw it on vegetal paper or smth? How do you get it fitted for the track?
Best way is to make a template using paper or cardboard. Place the paper down so that the sides are under your track and then trace a line using the track as your guid . Cut out the template and the trace on your foam and cut to shape

If you want to save yourself some work ( and make rock edges look more realistic) take your drywall saw and scrape it along all the edges....because of the teeth being different sizes and angle it rips and tears at a much more realistic unstanderized way
Yes that works very well. This was a very early video that I made for carving rock. My technique has changed some since. But yes , a saw blade works great 👍. I also like to use a butcher knife and scrape the tip as well.
