      M E R Y L Her character on Teen Wolf is Japanese on her mother's side and Korean on her father's side. This was stated in the show. Mason (the black, gay dude) asks her if she speaks Japanese. She replies something along the lines of "No. I'm also half Korean and I don't speak that either. And I'm getting a C in English..."

    Yep. One of the most exhausting things about being Asian. The prevalence of these kinds of things happening is astounding. 😞
    I mean, genuine curiosity is one thing... but there's plenty of ways to find out that I'm Filipino without being rude or offensive.

    I could relate to this so much cause I am actually Indian! Last month I was at the nail salon and the lady asked where I was from cause I guess I had dark skin, I said here America and she said no were are you actually from I repeated again America. Then she was like where are your parents from and I said Canada then she was like where were they originated from and when I said my mom was born in India she automatically went ohhhh I see which really annoyed me. So when you posted this video I automatically clicked it because I've been dealing with racism my whole life and it was refreshing to see someone rant and talk about it so thank so much 😘😘

    I have the exact same thing. I was born in The Netherlands, so when people ask, i just say I'm Dutch. And then they ask, no what ARE you. People think I'm chinese And they'd keep making guesses, whereas if they just asked my ethnicity, i would've told them straight up, I'm vietnamese.

    Thank you so much for this video, Arden. I think it all boils down to ignorance and small-minded people. I remember correcting a classmate (who asked if I was Chinese) that I was Korean and she said that we're all the same anyway. What.... I live in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood so Asians were super rare and gave that classmate a pass. And I've had another instance where a middle-aged man was staring at me in Starbucks. I got so annoyed I walked up to him and asked if there was something on my face. Turned out he was figuring out what I was and why I was offended when he asked if I was Japanese. UGH.

I'm Italian, born and raised in Italy from Italian parents, my whole family is Italian BUT since I'm from the south I have a darker skin and northafrican traits. now I live in Germany, people constantly ask me where I'm from because there's a huge immigrants community where I live. So everyone assumes im Arabian or Latina somehow, I get asked why I'm not wearing a hijab and such things 😅 but I mean, even if I was Arabian why the heck would you care. leave me alone lol.

    sooooooo frustrating when things like this happen to me. i get SO angry inside, but because it all happens so quickly i don't have time to react. and then i move on/let it go because it feels like there's no point in harboring anger over it. and then it happens again.

    • @Choosetoone
      @Choosetoone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn't be angry if your hot then maybe its an obvious way to start a conversation and maybe its just talking sometime put the wrong way but it is definitely not racist or wrong to ask, if it happens a lot which it wont it happens everywhere in Asian to white and black people in Europe to others its just a part of being something different in that area take it light hearted.

    • @bykchoi
      @bykchoi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all about context. If it's a stranger in the street saying 'ni hao', a cashier making slanted eye motions at you, a person saying that you don't LOOK American, etc. then I think I have a right to feel angry. Sure, it doesn't mean I would need to or should act out on that anger in all cases, I'll give you that. It DOES happen a lot though, both in California where I'm from and in England where I live now, and just because it's a part of the experience of being 'something different' doesn't mean it should be that way and just be taken lightheartedly.

    • @Choosetoone
      @Choosetoone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 'ni hao' is weird to say to a stranger but not necessarily bad the slanted eyes you can be pissed over although i would just shrug it off if i were Asian that is. i'm English and don't see much of what you said but not said it doesn't happen. and as for it doesn't mean it should be that way, that's life people are curious about being different.

    Hey Arden! I love your videos so much and I love how you take time to reply to us all the time!:) I'd be extremely interested if you ever filmed a video all about acting. Because I want to become an actress to the point where I feel like I won't ever be happy if I don't achieve that?? But getting into the industry is extremely hard and you have to put your all into it which is really complicated when you also have to make sure that you make enough money to pay for your house and all that other stuff you just have to take care of. (English is also not my native language which brings me to the accent problem but honestly that's nothing that can't be solved). Anyways, I'd really love if you made a video about maybe your acting journey, how you got into it, advice and all that! :)

    Oh my gosh, I feel this so hard. I'm hapa and the weirdest race experience I had was a woman at the train station going on a tirade about how I couldn't possibly be Asian (what I'd told her when she asked) and then she insinuated that my mother had cheated with "the help". It really does get exhausting having to defend your existence as an Asian American.

    I'm so sorry you have gone through all of that. Nobody deserves that.
    When I was in elementary, there weren't many Lantinos in my town. I was the only Latina in my class for a good year or 2. The school also didn't have a bilingual class or teacher (instead they put me in Speecb from 3rd-5th grade). They told my parents (they were bilingual) to speak to me in English instead of Spanish (my first language). Due to this, my parents were so scared that I would be bullied for my accent and ethnicty, that they only spoke English to me. They grew up with that and didn't want me to go through the same. Now, I'm in college and I am no longer fluent in Spanish. There are some words where I can't pronounce them correctly. I wish I could go back and speak both languages instead of mainly being fluent in one.

    I completely understand bc I've been through the same thing. I'm just curious about your thing with dogs though. Because I do ask people what kind of dog they have since I like expanding my knowledge on what dogs look like. I want to adopt a dog in the future so it gives me a better idea. I'm just giving another viewpoint but yeah SHAME ON THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST BEING RUDE.

    LOL! Some people are so ignorant. I live in Texas now but born and raised in LA most of my life.. and I get this question alot too... ahhh so you're definitely not Japanese because Japanese people are so rare to come by.. so you must be Chinese or something.. I do that emoji too. Arden it's so hard being an Asian person living in the countryside of Texas of all places. I get racist looks at grocery stores almost everyday like I'm some kind of zoo animal.

    this is the most relatable thing i've ever watched. i'm filipina, and people don't even know that it's asian😂 i've grown up with everyone thinking i was like some alien because apparently the only asian ethnicities are chinese or japanese. but when people did figure out i was asian, they'd still bully me anyway. people would always say i'm not american because my parents aren't american or because i'm not white, but i was born in america, so therefore i am american! i hope times are changing for the good and asians are not stereotyped into one thing! loved this vid arden❤️
