Today I'm sharing this really cool way to use yarn to pay homage to the books you've read. And I don't know why I kept using the phrase "keeping tracks". What a goober. 😘
It was a great podcast! I am doing something similar . . .a vest with a granny square for each book I read. I don't have a vest and not sure if I will get that many books read as I am starting a new job. So excited!!
Oh my! - yess! These are such a fun idea and I love incorporating books and crochet together. - you should totally make a bookbag or maybe a cozy cardigan to wear while reading! ❤
Very clever idea. Depending on how many read in a year, you may have enough for a pillow cover and can make one each year feeling “reading” accomplished and having lovely decor.
Oh, this is a great fun idea. I crochet, but TLYarns has an amazing granny square tutorial on TH-cam. I can see making a blanket/throw ,maybe a pillow for your comfy place you read in, a Jethro Cardigan to cuddle up in to read, oh my the flood gates are open 😮
I like this idea. I usually draw a bookshelf with a bunch of cool objects on the shelves along with the books. I glue it into a notebook and write something about each book when I finish it and color in a book on my shelf drawing.
granny square ideas: add felt to back (for support) and then attach them together vertically as diamonds as a fun hanging piece on your bookshelf, or join together in a square and attach to a dowel and make a wall hanging, or join together and make a scarf!
So much more appealing than the stress of a temperature blanket. My adult son just wandered by as you were sharing this idea. His comment 'so cool'. Thanks for the inspiration ❤
I’m so glad you’re doing this! I also started one. I have two nieces that are sisters, and one reads voraciously and the other loves to crochet, so I shared with their mom and the crocheting sister is going to surprise the reading sister with a blanket made from the colors of all the books she read this year. ❤
This is such a fun idea and so in tune with you, Tayler. I'm not much into reading but the Earth Tone Girl with her socks knit along related to the books covers hooked me to the audiobooks.
I do like the idea of this. I am making a jacket from granny squares at the moment. I recently saw a a pattern for a top.ade out of diagonal granny squares ❤
I have also seen people who, rather than doing a temperature blanket, they will do a genres read this year blanket, where the squares they make are based on the genres of each of the books they have read. You can make your pallet as simple or complex as you want depending on how many genres you choose (could be as simple as 2 colors: fiction for 1 color; non-fiction for another color). If people who knit don’t want to learn how to crochet a granny square, they could find a mosaic/slip stitch knit pattern and incorporate the different colors into squares of that.
You could make so many fun things with these. If you're in a book group, make sets of coasters for your members. If you have enough, you can make a "book bag". You can make a pillow cover, something to snuggle with when you're reading.
Great idea 🎉 and not just from the cover but also inspired from the story, like when there are colors in the story, that describe a place or some garments or someone on a fantasy world...... That could be something 😊
@ I didn’t know there was a 2nd one! I really enjoyed the 1st and passed it on. I watch the Good Books podcast and love the interaction with you and Brandon. I have read quite a few if your suggestions- all the Bardugo books, JMMiro, currently on Bringer of Dust, already read Night Circus. Loved that one. The 2nd book was just ok for me. Keep up the great work on both podcasts, kudos!!
That is such a fun idea. It’s funny that you mentioned temperature blankets, because those are exactly what came to my mind. I also think it would be fun to design knit squares. I love your idea of mounting granny squares on the wall too.😊
I love this because as one small part of the publishing process, (I work in book production) we work SO hard to make the book as beautiful as possible. Why not celebrate the creative design and special effects and color that all work to sell the book? Thank you for the idea!!
Also, I've seen a granny square mini chicken that has my heart by Tess Loves Yarn. To put them all together and make a little banner or a shelf of all the things you've read that year as mini chickens? It'd be too cute.
As someone who does a lot of comfort rereads I think you might be able to do something really cool and temperature-y with this to see how much you hang out in a given book/world. I also wonder if you could do something like this with like a bee keepers quilt if you are like me and can crochet but really really don’t want to. FWIW you actually can also knit granny squares. Someone taught me and I promptly forgot how because not my jam.
I’d be interested to see how someone’s favorite book genre is translated into the color palate of their squares. Cover art does seem to vary based on the type of books being read.
I was going to say the exact same thing. I work in a bookshop and it's interesting to look at the colours publishers will often use for different genres of fiction. Red, Orange, black, grey, white, strong contrasting colours for thrillers and crime. Pinks, yellow, pastel green and purples for "Chick lit". Dark, rich jewel tones for historical fiction. Blues and silvers for Sci-Fi, Greens and earth tones for Fantasy etc. etc.
I’m pretty new to your knitting channel as I REALLY want to learn to knit. I just made my first hat which is not good (gaps/weird bulge? - not sure what the heck I did). Anyway, hoping to learn from you. Also watching your book channel as an avid reader. You guys are fun to watch and I think I will try Night Circus. Last but not least, I LOVE how you have decorated your “office.” Beautiful!
Fun idea! I actually don’t do anything to keep track of books I’ve read (and thus tend to forget what I’ve read and what I haven’t). But as knitters we love to play with colour so what a neat way to put together colour palettes and think about our books.
Ok I love this and am super tempted to give it a try! Also there are definitely a few patterns out there for granny square cardigans which omg book themed granny square reading cardi?! Amazing
This is such a good idea!! I would have to do it over a couple of years for a blanket lol because I'm not a fast reader and I'm lucky to get through 12 books a year, but I love this I'm going to do it :) Currently I use LikeWise to keep track of the books I have read or want to read
I LOVE this idea! What a great way to combine my love of fiber art with my reading. I journal my reads already, but this is a whole new dimension of fun! I wonder if the squares will show a pattern in the colors of the books I am attracted to? I'm very keen to find out. Thank you for sharing. 😊
There are lots of modular knitting patterns that could be used as well. Like the Questionable Blends Blanket by Craft Me Happy or the Pirouette Shawl by Purl Soho.
Hey there, I'm also working on a book blanket that ties in with my Goodreads goal for this year. Wasn't really interested in a temp blanket, sinceI live in MO so the temp blanket would be about the same color too many times. I'm using a Fisherman's Ring granny square. The plan right now is for a throw-size. I've got 15 more books to get through for the year, then have squares plotted for the months, seasons, and then background squares. I'm really excited about it! I do find myself looking at the dang book covers though before I decide what to read next, so I don't get too "like" squares nearby. So much for don't judge a book by its cover!
Great idea. Granny squares are so versatile - blankets of course, pillow covers, totes, scarves ...and there are many variations of granny squares plus triangles and hexagons.
I have been wanting to do something similar to this but a knit version rather than crochet. I am always looking for a way to combine my two favorite hobbies of reading and crafting.
I would use thread instead of yarn, to make it thinner and crochet the granny square before reading the book. Therefore, the square could be used as the bookmarker :)
Thanks for your book recommendations. I just finished Unusual Monsters and thoroughly enjoyed it! It appears we have similar taste in reading. I have read the Golem and the Jinni as well as The Hacienda. I will check out your husband's channel for my next read.
Your Granny square is cool. I read The Golem and the Jinni, so long ago and it was very good. I to am following your book channel to. I keep track of my books in Goodreads
I think this is a great idea, love it actually. You can extend it too patterns as well depending on the number of colors in the cover. Doesn't have to be complicated but it can be as detailed as the creator wants to make it. This is an awesome idea, thank you
I also saw that post, but I don't crochet. I thought you could do something similar using knitted mitered squares. I have not made one yet but have created a chart for The Night Circus.
What a fun idea! Actually I send you this idea too on December 29th via email, but I might have gotten the adress wrong, or it got caught in the spam or you just haven't had the time to read it, who knows 🤭
I think this is a terrific idea. But, i have a comment that i hope is not taken as criticism. I realize that we often associate a book by its cover, much like we do with album covers. i think, in most case, however, that the cover is the vision of a second creative mind. Sadly, these great graphic designers/artists of book covers often go unmentioned.
OMG Tayler, looking at all those ends to weave in gave me the heebee jeebees. You really need this tutorial. th-cam.com/video/toCk0jHlqt0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=j2sG0brYSWQc1Asi I made about 50 granny squares for my sister to make Xmas Trees and Xmas stockings and only had 1 tail to sew in per square. 😊❤
Today I'm sharing this really cool way to use yarn to pay homage to the books you've read. And I don't know why I kept using the phrase "keeping tracks". What a goober. 😘
lol!
I think granny squares are a fantastic idea! Quick and easy to make, and usefu!
I saw a knitter make a (crochet) vest out of granny squares. I’ve seen patterns for sweaters.
It was a great podcast! I am doing something similar . . .a vest with a granny square for each book I read. I don't have a vest and not sure if I will get that many books read as I am starting a new job. So excited!!
Granny square book bag!
@@janetcannonteacher omg stop. That’s genius.
That gives me another idea: use covers of favourite books to select colour schemes for knitted garments.
Yes!
I’m an elementary librarian and we just stated a crochet club at school this year. What a genius idea to combine two things I love! 🤯
This would make a great idea for a variation of the temperature blanket trend.
Right?! My thoughts exactly. ❤️
and more variation in color without having to keep track
Oh my! - yess! These are such a fun idea and I love incorporating books and crochet together. - you should totally make a bookbag or maybe a cozy cardigan to wear while reading! ❤

I love this idea but instead of a blanket I think i would want to make a cardigan, a cozy cardigan to read in is definitely my vibe.
What a great idea!! The squares could be used to make a tote bag for your books! Or for your current WIP and book together 😊

@@louisebaker340 totally agree! And super stoked that your son appreciates it as well. ☺️
Mind blown 🤯. Not only is this a fantastic idea, but now I need to binge watch your reading podcast 😅
Thank you Lori!! 😘

Great idea..I sent this to my niece who is a librarian for a fun project for her library!

Fun…..what an awesome idea! Maybe a table runner, a lined bag or granny square slippers (by Naztazia on Ravelry) or a sling bag.
So fun!! Love the idea!
That's a great idea!!!
Thanks for sharing Taylor. With a little sewing know how, how about a lined granny square project bag. 😉
I don't know how to crochet but I shared this link with my daughter who is a crocheter (?). Thanks for sharing!
