I think William Powell might have been the real star of this movie. He played the straight man, great contrast to Lemmon, Cagney, and Fonda. It was his last film--a great way for him to go out.
William Powell was 62 when Mister Roberts was filmed. He still had his good looks and strong voice and could have continued working. It could be that he was getting fewer starring roles and wanted to end his career with one that would be remembered.
I love this movie. It reminds me of Subic Bay and the USS New Orleans. The best part of the movie was Liberty Call. I remember the day my ship hit port and they sounded Liberty call. What a great time. “ Thanks for the Liberty Mr. Roberts “.
Well would you look at that William Powell in top form as always one of the best actors I think that I have ever had the pleasure to watch up on the screen bar none will Miss you William Powell unless unless I'm mistaken this is mr. Paul's last film unless I'm mistaken and you all know I very rarely am very rarely ,. ! 🤔
You left out the best part when Pulver after reading of Robert's death went to the Captains berth to hassle him over company punishment. The Doc was the first husband of Carole Lombard who had married Clark Gable and was killed in a plane crash at 33 which prompted Cable to join the Army Air Corps on dangerous missions.
Duty and integrity and courage before dishonor. But it looks like you don't have a clue about any of that. Go learn what the following means - "I'd rather have it than the Congressional Medal of honor."

Lemmon though won the Oscar that year for best supporting actor.

William Powell Was Terrific,
Man, I still remember the emotional 180 I had when I first saw this scene.
"Of course I know by this time they must be very happy because the Captain's overhead is filled with mar..bles..."
Ooooh...the rest of that scene...!!!!

Monteju Esquaida Was his last.
What if he read the other letter first

Ensign Pulver throws the Captain’s palm overboard and then goes to the Captain and tells him.
BTW, It is just the Medal of Honor (MOH).
There is no "Congressional Medal of Honor."
Well, there you go. The bilious green ribbon is better.
It's called "THE MEDAL OF HONOR"
@@butchyshoe Zactly!
_Frank Turlough Pulver_ (Jack Lemon)
So sad
Looks like Paulie Walnuts.
In other words, if he had done what the commander wanted, he would have still been alive.

Yeah and hundreds of people in WW2. They volunteered for dangerous assignments and some didnt make it alive. Many wanted to do their duty for victory
My uncle was on destroyer off Okinawa 80 years ago his ship hit my two kamikazes a lot of people killed
Iowa City shout out! (not the greatest brag though...)
Home of the University of Iowa BTW.
