I just got the Canon RF 50 1.2 a couple weeks ago and it was the first lens that actually knocked me on my a$s. The stills it produces are unbelievable. Still testing it for video but the lens makes a lot of noise focusing. The 50 1.4 you are reviewing might be better for video. But try the 50 1.2 for sure, you won't be disappointed.
Same here. I tried it for video and the focusing is definitely audible. It's a jittery sound that is constant but the stills are AMAZING!!! Keeping it for sure but this lens has my interest as well
You are welcome! I don't think you will be disappointed when you pull the trigger on it. This lens has impressed me so much that I'm tempted to try out the 24 1.4 vcm too.
Great review! Looking forward to receiving my copy this week. I already own the 24 and 35 VCMs, so I get to complete the trinity! I suspect an 85mm is coming soon!
@@JaredHoyman I am loving the 24mm! I mostly got it for my new C80 for doing video work and have yet to play around with it with my R5M2. I appreciate that it has consistent "character" and size as the 35mm, which makes changing lens on a gimbal a breeze!
Really interested in this lens as I only have an EF 50 1.8 - the 50 1.2 is enticing but much heavier and expensive so I’m thinking of getting this next year
The bokeh seems a tad busier than the RF 50 f1.2, even though its only a third of a stop, seems to render less creamy, but for half the weight, and smaller size, I'd be considering trading my f1.2 for this...
I am eagerly waiting for my order to arrive on the 20th. I had pre-ordered the 35mm f/1.4 VCM earlier but returned it due to many negative reviews on the internet at the time. However, I now think people may have exaggerated the issues. Those three lenses are still very good, and by Canon's standards, it isn’t a top-of-the-line lens, so some compromises are to be expected.
It’s easy for reviewers to nitpick because of how far tech has come but I think a lot of them missed the point of these lenses. They are sharp, excellent contrast, weather sealed and light. Not to mention designed for both photos a video in mind. You will be happy with it. I’ll jump on the 85 1.4 when it gets announced.
I have the 35/1.4 and it is good on the R5M2 but it is also good on the R7 where it is equivalent to 56mm. I’m still deciding between picking up the 24mm or the 50mm next. 🤔
I'm looking forward to getting the older EF 85mm L II right now. This 50mm, while sharp, feels a bit clinical in its rendering. By the way, I'm impressed by how well-controlled the focus breathing is. I suspect it's a result of both optical design and in-camera software corrections.
@@GinoFoto I believe the focus breathing is more controlled on the lens than in the body. I didn’t enable focus breathing compensation in the r5 II but I’ll keep you posted while I get more miles out of it. I’m tempted to get the 85 1.2 II EF version as well. I keep seeing it around $1k refurbished, which is an excellent deal. A bit heavy, but for what it’s intended for would be excellent.
You’re welcome! I was so close to buying the 1.2 multiple times but once I saw the 1.4 was coming out and was going to be much smaller I knew I would be happier with that.
Good video but as the 35mm was the first to come out I ended up buying but still continue with small RF 50mm 1,8 and liked to see a comparison with this new RF 50mm 1,4 if possible, thank you. ❤
I believe aperture only changes in photo mode on the newest cameras like the R5II and R1 every other camera it only changes in video. I will probably keep my 50 1.2 though even though it’s chunkier. This looks nice though.
Great review. I own the cheap 1.8 version, which I think does a decent job. In regard to the aperture ring, which supposedly is geared towards video, what is the point of it? Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most videographers lock in their aperture and not really change it much? I don’t really recall a time where I’ve seen a video where the aperture changed while filming. Additionally, one can just change the aperture with the dial on the camera.
Thank you! That’s an excellent question and I tend to agree with you. The only scenario I can see where it would be helpful is when it’s on a gimbal or handheld and you are moving from outdoors to inside or visa versa. The iris appears to move smoother without hard stops compared to other lenses that control the iris with the control ring. It has a a very smooth transition compared to the control ring. Otherwise i had it set to “A” in fear of changing the aperture by mistake.
If you're doing "pro" style filming (e.g. documentary with static shots, filming on sets with controlled lighting environments, etc.) then yes. If you're doing vacation style video (which I do all the time) lighting conditions can change rapidly. I took my 35 1.4 VCM to a museum with a wonderful gardens and used my aperture ring a lot, especially in panning shots outdoors where some areas were in shade and others had bright sun. Since it's a museum I could only take in my camera/lens and would not have been allowed to take my more pro rig with a shotgun mic, so I'm glad the focusing and aperture was dead silent, which the R5ii's mic could not pick up (unlike all of my other RF lenses which the mic picks up).
@ excellent point. Your case scenario is a reason why im considering the 24 1.4 vcm. I was in a museum a month ago with my 24-70 2.8 and it was not fast enough and the aperture ring would have been nice.
Mannnnn, I need to stop watching your channel 😅. I own the Sigma EF 1.4 adapted. I love the look of it for both photo and video but it's inconvenient and clunky for video. It's front heavy on a gimbal. Been thinking about this lens and the 35 and here you are tempting me 😂😂😂. Great video!!!
Thank you and yes…..I’m probably a bad influence for GAS. I’ve heard the sigma 50 1.4 Art is a great lens but also heavy. When the Canon 85 1.4 VCM comes out I’ll probably add that as well. The 24mm is very tempting but I almost would want to rent that first. 50mm is such a useful focal length.
I have heard that the Sigma 50mm 1.4 has some focusing problems that requires a dock to fix. Will I have to worry about that when adapting it to mirrorless?
also picked up this lens, I wasn't a huge fan of the 50 1.2 and this solves most of the issue I had with that lens. I'll keep an eye out for more of your thoughts.
@@mattgericke4537 I’m glad I held out for the 1.4. The 50 1.2 sounds good on paper but the weight and fact 1.4 is good enough for me makes it a better buy.
