Located in the northeast of the Atlantic Ocean, about 2 hours from Europe and 5 hours from North America, the Azores are formed by nine islands, which are divided into three groups: the Eastern (islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria), the Central (islands of Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial) and the West (islands of Flores and Corvo).
With a total area of 2,333 km², the islands were formed by volcanic activity more than eight million years ago. Mild temperatures all year round (ranging on average between 14°C and 22°C).
The archipelago of the Azores has more than 246 thousand inhabitants, distributed in 19 cities. The largest of these is Ponta Delgada, located on the island of São Miguel, which is also the economic capital of the archipelago. The other capitals are Angra do Heroísmo and Horta. Among the main cities of the Azores in Portugal are:
• Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel and is the capital of the Azores;
•Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island;
•Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel;
•Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island;
•Horta, on Faial Island.

Gastronomy and Handicrafts:
Smoked butter, yeast bread, beet pickles and steamed pork ear are some of the dishes worth trying at us.
The stews of Furnas are the most famous dish of the archipelago. In it, beef, pork, vegetables and potatoes are cooked together for hours in a pot placed in a hole under the earth, with only the steam that comes from the depths of the planet.
In addition to the stew, are also highlights in the regional cuisine the rump steak, octopus cooked with wine, cheeses, in addition to wines and liqueurs.
Among the handicrafts produced by the population are requested wicker baskets and furniture, embroidery and lace, blankets and quilts, as well as artificial flowers made with fish scales and blue and white ceramics.
Islands:
St. Michael's Island
São Miguel is the main island of the Azores and the largest with 15.8km wide. From the top of the largest mountains it is possible to see the immensity of the ocean on both sides. In length, it is 62.1km.
Santa Maria Island
About 80 kilometers from São Miguel is the Island of Santa Maria, which has a little more than 5,500 inhabitants. With 97 km², its highest point is 587 meters of altitude: it is the Pico Alto. Many of the beauties of the place can be seen from many viewpoints.
Terceira Island
The second most inhabited island of the archipelago, with approximately 55,000 inhabitants, Terceira is 30.1 kilometers long and 17.6 kilometers wide (401.9 km²).
Faial Island
With 19.8 kilometers long and 14 wide (173.1 km²), Faial Island has as its highest point the Cabeço Gordo, with 1043 meters of altitude.
Pico Island
With 444.9 km² of area, the island of Pico is home to the highest point in Portugal: the Pico Mountain, with 2351 meters of altitude. The point is home to the volcano of the same name.
The island is surrounded by the sea - where dolphins and whales swim quietly in the blue waters.
St. George's Island
At 54 kilometers long and 6.9 kilometers wide (243.9 km²), São Jorge Island has a long and high volcanic mountain range. Its highest point, with 1053 meters of altitude, is the Pico da Esperança. With great pastures, it has one of the tastiest cheeses in Portugal.
Graciosa Island
With about 4,500 inhabitants, Graciosa Island is 12.6 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide (60.9 km²). There, the highlight goes to the production of meat and dairy products.
Flores Island
Europe's westernmost point, Flores Island is 16.6 kilometres long and 12.2 kilometres wide (141.4 km²). It has hydrangea fields. The population is more than 4 thousand inhabitants.
Crow Island
At 6.24 kilometres long and 3.99 kilometres wide (17.1 km²), this is the smallest island and has around 500 inhabitants who live off cattle ranching.
