Well done you two. Most people would have just employed a company to do all this but you two need a pat on the back for the outstanding work you did in transforming this pool and turned this whole area into a beautiful entertaining spot. Its a credit to you both. Well done again well done
Projects like that are not only satisfying in terms of accomplishing a difficult task. But also in terms of gaining knowledge and accumulating knowledge that wouldn't of otherwise be gained.
This video brings back memories. I used to take care of pools in a hotel. That was... interesting. From kids throwing up in them, to the heater going kaput during a busy weekend, to my personal favorite, the sand filter failing and spraying water all over the pump room until I shut off the pump at the breaker. Good times. 😆
We had to replace our liner this year. When they took out the old liner, my heart. Sank at the condition of the walls. I asked one of the guys how much did he think it would be to replace the walls. He asked why I thought they would need replacing. I t9ld him how horrible I thought they looked. He said, these walls are in better shape than most. What a relief. The liner and installation was $5400. Three years ago it would have been $ 2800.
That weekend project. Got to love them. My wife has gotten us into a few over the past 25 years lol It's what probably has kept us together. Hello from Siesta Key Florida
seriously amazing you guys didnt stop once you saw what it looked like...i got tired just looking at it haha really awesome you can be proud of yourselves
Hi, thanks for making this video! My husband and I are in the exact same position and can’t get a company to come out so I’ve thought to do it myself. I’d love to know if you guys had and cracks or holes in the bottom of the pool not just around the sides? If so can you tell me what product you used to patch those holes? Our pool has several cracks and even a couple of holes from being abandoned for so long and I’m unsure of what to use to fix it, the bottom of ours appears to be concrete with vinyl sides rather than metal like yours. Thanks in advance for your response!
Hi Heather! It will depend what to use because there are different types of concrete that have traditionally been used for the base of pools. Ours was a vermiculite based concrete so Andrew had to mix vermiculite, sand and Portland cement. You can usually tell if it's vermiculite if you can push your nail in and it leaves a dent with almost gold/shiny flakes in it. Hope that helps!!
I used to live in Mississauga, Ontario. I had to backfill the pool, because my kids were too young at that time (for safety reason). The only challenge that I had (reasoning to not to keep) was weather constraints. I don’t see, why we keep pool for for 2-3 months. Seven months we had to keep close (Winterize) and 2 months keep cleaning the leafs (fall) Now I moved to Dallas,Texas. I do see 100% logical reason for keeping the pool. (FYI although I had the pool gas heater as well but in harsh weather it’s not practical)
Beautiful pool reno. I only question the "tamping" of the soil prior to pouring the concrete. That's the one thing that can come back to haunt you down the line..hopefully not though but next time rent a Tamper so you know the soil is compacted properly.
Nice job! I purchased my first and last house with a pool. It was great for the first couple of years and then the novelty wore off. Now it is a money pit that maybe gets used 2-3 times per summer. Never again.
You must have had a lot of mosquito and knats, water flies, etc with all that stagnant water under your porch. What a beautiful transformation to go from that to a beautiful salt water pool to enjoy!!
turned out nice ! Next time use a Right Angle Grinder with a wire brush and or a Warrior paint removal pad to remove the rust ! Use a 5 gallon pail with a paint screen instead of a roller paint tray = so much easier and FASTER

I cant understand why people go for a in-ground liner pool?? If you want a pool so badly, save a bit more and get a concrete pool that will out last anything else. Hell, get a glass fibre pool, they also cheaper and fairly durable.

Fantastic job! I have never seen a metal sided pool with a tarpaulin lining before, is that common in the US? What does the liner cost and are they custom? also how long will that last as surely the sun and chlorine weakens and bleaches it?
I don’t think pool liners are often at all in the US. Maybe in areas where it gets super cold and the water freezes a lot, it can probably weaken a concrete pool overtime and lead to fractures.
Great work! I could have missed this in the comments or the video, but what are your pool walls made of? I am just curious because they seem in great shape after all those years of Canadian winters.
Wow...think of the increase in the value of your property the second your pool was ready to use? Love the liner color (colour)...makes the water look great. ☮
Just found your amazing channel great work my friends, we have 6 dogs and they are clumsy as hell, just wondering if you have a way for th dogs to get out if they fall in, when you not there, it might never happen, but if i had this amazing pool, my dogs would just treat it as their own...
Thanks so much David! The dogs are never outside unsupervised but that absolutely is a concern of mine! I’m hoping this year to get some plastic stairs for them in case it ever does happen ❤️

just bought a house with a pool and yeah it hasnt been maintained so im about to undertake a similar journey although i know nobody with a pool so this will be a lot of research and work
Not running a #8 bare copper (or maybe #6 in Canada) to bond the equipment, rebar, pool shell, ladders, handles is asking for trouble when the pump or heater GFI fails, energizes the water and kills you when you try to leave the pool.
Did you consider using a chemical rust remover before resorting to grinding it away? That was a huge amount of grinding. Good job, BTW, it is always very satisfying to see someone do a job themselves. The effort you put in was stupendous. FYI, Modesto is a city here in California. It is famous for being the birthplace of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars.
Can't believe someone built a deck over what is a septic tank.did you buy the house that way. Crazy.an epoxy paint over the rusty walls would really help

All I can say is WOW!!! What a workout and your body was probably aching for months!!!
This is very inspirational I have a inground pool that has not seen any fun in 20 years just bought this home and plan on restoring it ❤
POST YOU RESTORING IT BRO
Yes!! You'll enjoy that pool even more after your own sweat goes into the project.
So how is it going?
I'm just so glad you guys did this. I cant imagine the amount of mosquitoes you guys saw with that down there

You guys crushed it. Looks awesome.
We don’t use liners in Australia for permanent pools. They are all tiled or pebblecreted. Liners are used for above ground temporary pools only. .
this is so good , you guys did such a wonderful job with this pool like time invested so well while staying back in home during peak covid.
Outstanding guys good team effort and job well done, very educational 👍

Do you have a link to the pool coping pieces? We have nearly the same pool that was abandoned for years. Trying to revive it and need some inspiration
Does your pool have a main drain or were you able to reuse the old one
Wow...think of the increase in the value of your property the second your pool was ready to use?

Amazing job 👏,what is the estate cost you guys had total you thinking spent?
Thank you so much! Total price came out to around $21,000 CAD!
Did you have to get permits to repair your pool? In case you might hit a power line or something
Hey guys, well done!
What kind of paint did you use on the wall before lining it?

In Australia the council rules demand that we have a separate child proof fence around every pool not just a fence between neighbors.
