What is a Dummy Lyric? How and Why to Use this Collaboration Tool

  • This week, I'm talking about a collaboration tool I'm using as a composer to communicate melodic intent to the lyricist. Dummy lyrics are a way for a composer to communicate how many syllables are in the melody and which syllables are strong and weak stresses. Dummy lyrics are easier for a lyricist to work to, since they know that any new lyric that shares the stress pattern with the dummy lyrics will work in the melody.
